- It's time for the perfect winter project! We're going to be building up this tired old YZ250 to be used in off-road and Enduro racing for the upcoming season. It needs a ton of work to get race ready, so today we're taking a close look at the bike to see what all we need to do to get this MX bike trail ready.

Really like the platform of content you are creating. Between the house, bike, garden, MTB and other stuff you have me hooked
Fingers crossed its not too broad! Haha
More van build bro!
I agree! love this platform of content. feels very similar to my lifestyle and what I plan to have someday! love the self sustainable lifestyle.
That's actually such a great name and wild story behind it. So crazy; so perfect.
I felt so bad for the guy! At least his spirits were high though haha
I don't ride motorcycles, I would like to, but I am an obsessive tinker, this should be a fun series to watch.
Finally a motorized bicycle on the channel. I know its not a Polygon Mt. Bromo, but it'll do for now 😀
Love the misery refreshed in her name. Looking forward to seeing the build progress.
You are 100% right it's not the bike, it's the rider...
but MAN, those 300XCs are made of rainbows and unicorns. They are just magically good.
Yeah one of those bikes are on my list eventually, I just have to be in the right place to pull the trigger on one!
The right way to build an enduro is just like this.. excited to see your future content and make progress on the bike!
Here's hoping these are successful enough that you can justify a Timbersled kit at some point. The best winter content :D
Oh man I know! YZ on a sled...might make me actually enjoy winter!
You gotta do something crazy with the livery.
Good for you nice change !
03 was a good year! owned one for years! great trail/race bike with front suspension upgrade, pro circuit platinum 2 main pipe for bottom end, taller first and 3rd gears. Those cylinders are nickle plated and must be replaced to add cc's or re-ring good idea to re n re the power valve and direct injection would be a nifty upgrade! always ran maxima ester based synthetic racing pre mix for added snortiness.Stoked to see this project build!
Not that you asked for advice , but , if I were doing this , I'd be fitting a flywheel weight to smooth out the power hit and make it much more rideable in the trees . Great to see a bit of a spin off from the MTB content .
Been waiting for this one for a while!!!
This is going to be so sick!
All in on this one!
So hyped for this build!
needed a video this morning so stoked !
Glad to see you working on the dirt bikes again. Hopefully I’ll see you up at Canfield some day!
Hoping to do a lot more exploring out there this season on this thing!
Love the varied content.
I need to dust the inch of dust off my 2003 CR250. looking forward to the next videos.
I feel like a Surron with a Fox 40 would fit you well!
Love this series!
With maintenance and longevity, I still hand it to Honda and Yamaha for making great bikes year after year. Can’t wait to see you rip on this bad boy.
Been waiting to see more dirt bike content here! Hope you get out on some nice trail rides once the build is finished!
Mtb + Moto = Best youtube channel
If you want a FULL WR transmission, look into using the transmission from the WR426 or WR250Z. You'll have an ultra-low 1st gear. Or you run 14/45 and have a regular 1st gear but an ultra-high 5th gear.
I may or may not have some extra parts like under my bench already 🤘
As someone that use to ride a lot of enduro I am stoked to see how this project turns out and this really makes me want to buy an old Yamaha to fixer up. It’s cool your into both sports as years ago I got into mountain biking as a way to build up endurance for the dirt bike.
Dope channel dude, currently eying an Astro / Safari for a moto setup. Love the vibes and information
Stoked for this series! The last dirt bike I owned was a yz250 and I had a BLAST on it....can't wait to see the build!
Love that Mustache!! And Stocked for the series!!
YEAH! Excited for you and to see the progress you make with it.
Excited to watch this series! Ended up getting a Brand new husky 300, but was always interested in yz250 builds. There’s definitely potential for them to be good trail bikes!
A great addition to the mtb video as well.
A Husky 300 is my dream bike! Hopefully I can wiggle my way into one one day.
Hell yea stoked to see this build!!!
Love that we are getting to enjoy some dirt bike videos from you! I’ve always enjoyed your editing style. I’ve had an 03 YZ250 with a 300 kit in it for about 4 years now and absolutely love it. Of course I agree the new ktms are superior but the old blue bikes carry you down the trail just the same. A little advice, skip the rear tube and go for a tubliss or a mousse, it’ll be worth it in the long run. Front doesn’t matter as much but if you’re going to be riding enduro, rear tubliss or mousse is the move
What 300 kit do you have and how do you like it? I was thinking in another phase down the road getting the Eric Gorr 300 kit put on this tuned for tractoring.
@@TheShredist mines got the Eric Gorr 300 kit and has had it in it since I got it. I’ve ridden my friends 250s and there’s definitely an advantage to the 300 kit for enduro application. Especially when you pair it with an fmf gnarly pipe it really gives it that grunt right off the bottom. Super useful for zapping up rock ledges and logs. I’ve actually got a video out showing my motor with 150hrs on it so if you’re worried about reliability it’s not an issue on these kits. Eric makes awesome stuff but he’s super busy (I think he runs his entire business solo) and can be a little difficult to get a hold of sometimes. However I’ve heard more positive reviews for his kits than Athena and the other big bore kit manufacturers. He actually custom ports each cylinder to match the riders preferences. Can’t recommend him enough!
Excellent, can't wait for the next "installment" of this series 🤘
Hell yeah! I bought my long time dream bike, the legendary XR650R and while I freaking love it, it's also not the dream bike I thought it was. Next plan has been a YZ250, though haven't been able to decide between steel frame or aluminum frame. Excited to see what you do with this thing, maybe help motivate me to part ways with the 650R and get back to the better smelling two stroke!
Steel frame has more flex to it for a softer ride, which is the reason why I went with it. 06 and up AL frames will come with better suspension though. A little bit of give and take!
Looking forward to an Awesome series. I have a four year old 450x that is still fresh. But, I miss the 2 stroke hit. So, looking to get a 250 2t in the near future. 😁
Love the vids
I had this very model and it was really grunty even though mine was setup for track, I could take it on single track and it worked surprisingly well. What I love about the 03+ YZ 250 is the parts are so exchangeable. The motor is essentially the same. It's the best value/performance dirt bike hands down.
BTW YZ 250 builds are also great YT content. VERY popular pursuit, but you knew that. :)
Its definitely a solid platform! I'm excited to finally ride this thing again.
Awesome dude! Another moto mtb guy. Hopefully your moto videos get more traction than mine. Mine TANK! looking forward to the build, I did my 2006 yz250 a few years back. Also if you rent already have one(looks like you might), 10oz flywheel weight 👌
I'm low key expecting them to under-perform at first, hoping they'll eventually pull in a new demographic that enjoys watching them. Here's to experimenting!
wow, another project? dude finish the van!!!
I only have 2 projects going lol
@@TheShredist finish the van!!!!
@@ChuyR. definitely working on it. I've been waiting on funding for it. Just sold my wrx to finish both the van and this bike. I'm just as anxious to finish the van as you guys are to see it!
A flywheel weight could be a top mod
Just yesterday I paid attention to my 2011 YZ 250 after it was sitting in a storage shed untouched for 3 1/2 years. It ran great before but I'm worried at least I drained the gas, but I noticed the coolant was low hope it's not in the case 😂 Working slow so that's as far as I got yesterday. Looking forward to seeing your build and how it comes out and some moto footage. 🤙
Braaap!
I was just looking at my tired 96 yz250 that has had a body swap and other stuff done to it but it leaks from everywhere. This might be the motivation I need to start ordering parts for it and stop neglecting the bike. I have other bikes but its my only 2 stroke anymore. looking forward to seeing your progress.
I'm more comfortable riding 4 strokes on the track, but there's something that makes a 2 stroke 10 times more fun! They're worth keeping around!
@@TheShredist I turned my reliable 426 into my supermoto for street use and will be using the YZ for practice days at the track and woods riding mostly. Just need to make them a priority again and a little less serious adulting lol.
Stupid adulting...always peeks its nasty head into all the fun...
I think this video was about a dirt bike, but not really sure... that sexy mustache, it had me distracted.
What is the status of the Astro van? Been looking for your next installment. In the meantime.......I'll enjoy this series.
Was waiting on funding. Just sold my wrx so the van will be coming back soon!
Get a 05+ front brake line. It willbe almosta foot shorter. Do you feel you really need a wide ratio trans? It's my opinion a stock pipe would work better for what you ride. And it's a heavier guage metal. To me a 3.2 gallon translucent tank doesn't look bad. Although the black painted frame does
I definitely need the wide ratio. I have it geared so far down via sprockets for the steep trails around here with that it currently has a top speed of about 30mph. I want to go back to near stock sprockets with a wide spread through the gears.
@@TheShredist consider getting the 22mm triples. It makes the YZ the bike it is meant to be
Braaapppp
I love the fact that your both an MTB guy and a dirt bike guy. I’ve riden dirt bikes my whole and I’m just now at 49 developing a passion for mountain bikes and for some reason, where I live cyclist in general don’t seem to like dirt bike guys AT ALL. I don’t get it… 🤷♂️ love your channel though 👍
Honestly that's a reason why I've been hesitant about doing more dirtbike content. It's like some kind of bike turf war between MX and MTB lol
Shoulda named her Tanya Harding 😂
😂
you should link up with Cameron. ruclips.net/user/CameronNiemela He lives in the area and is awesome at restoring bikes!
But hows Scruffy?
I don't have ten grand to dump on an expensive bike so I'd rather buy a cheap one and dump twenty grand into it.
Seems accurate
Wisecos are junk. The Niks Pro-X piston is identical to the OEM Yamaha piston on these. When I worked at the Yamaha dealer in this era we pulled a factory piston from the box and compared it to a Niks Pro-X, they were identical casting marks and all except where Yamaha etched out a spot where the Niks logo was, they were clearly the supplier to Yamaha for the OEM piston and being a Japanese company I have no qualms running their rod kits as well and hhave had great luck with them. Avoid Hot Rods brand at all costs, Chinese junk with out of the box specs worse than totally clapped hundreds of hours parts.
Definitely good info, I just ordered a hot rods crank, but thinking I call to get it returned and swapped for oem. Didn't realize they had such a bad wrap 😕
I’ll sell you my KTM 300 for half that price 😜
Don't tempt me lol
@@TheShredist I’ll even deliver it to Idaho, go riding there, and make a video about it 😜
4 strokes suck ass! 2 stroke life lol
