CityStream: Restoring the Kelp Forests of Puget Sound

  • Many people think of kelp as an irritating weed. But it plays an essential role in marine ecosystems by providing food and habitat for fish and other wildlife. Kelp forests also absorb carbon from the atmosphere, which helps mitigate ocean acidification. Unfortunately, kelp forests have drastically declined in the Sound. The Puget Sound Restoration Fund, working with local partners, is spearheading innovative ways to conserve and restore this valuable resource. Producer Pete Cassam takes a look.
