A Cry in the Wild is a 1990 coming of age-survival drama film based on the book Hatchet, written by Gary Paulsen. 13-year-old Brian is the sole survivor of an unreported plane crash. Alone in the Yukon wilderness, Brian must learn to survive by his wits, find food and shelter, and brave wild, hungry animals until or if he is found.
Its been over 20 years since I last read Hatchet. It was one of my favorite books as a kid and now today, at the age of 32, I just find out that they made a movie based on it!
I feel the same way!!! I LOVED Hatchet and all the Brian books growing up and now that I teach middle school English I have used Hatchet several times in class and my kids always ask if there is a movie? To which I always responded I wish. For it being made in 1990, I cannot believe I had never heard of it until today when I did a search for some other Paulson books I find out that not only is there a movie but it's free on RUclips!!! I was so sad when Paulson died last year, I had always wanted to do an author zoom or cal with him and my sixth-grade class. **IF you haven't already I strongly recommend his autobiographical book GUTS!!!!
@@ittybitty73 I'll definitely check it out. I was also unaware there were several sequels to Hatchet written as well so I'm definitely reading them this summer! I'm glad that you were able to find out about this movie too and I'm sure your class is gonna be thrilled to watch it!
@@ittybitty73 So Cool!
It was actually an Assignment too read the book and watch the movie after 💗👍😜
Those were the day's!
Lol I’m 32 and this was my favorite book from forever ago. I heard about the movie maybe last year. Cant find it on Netflix or prime video.
Today was that day for me too friend. Could only imagine seeing this when I wanted to.
First time I saw this movie was in the mid-90s on PBS of all places. I didn't know it was a book. A coming-of-age classic for sure.
Facts 💯
the book was part of the canadian reading curriculum for many years :)
PBS is great
same with me! PBS on OETA channel 11 (but that's early 90s oklahoma). this movie was rent free in my head for decades. only a few years ago on a forum did someone identify it for me based on my movie plot description. It's just a perfect movie for a moody kid to relate to. overcome and adapt and leave your spaz behind.
I was in elementary school reading the book and I'll never forget it. It got me into survival
Same here
Same, i never forgot it because not long after we finished the book in 5th grade, 9/11 happened... We thought it was an accident like in the book...
I am in 4th grade elementary and we are currently on chapter 15 and we will read more after winter break/vacation and we are currently in that going back on January 3,2023
I'm in 5th grade and I'm watching it
And red the book
Legend has it that Brian's mother never apologized or accepted any accountability for her actions that set this whole thing into motion. Brian still has a mullet and a fondness for hand weaponry.
And Brian married his child hood boyfriend Edward John Robertson! ❤

What in the WORLD are you talking about?
I love seeing everyone come together in the comments with shared love for this story ❤
As a kid, I've always wanted to go somewhere secluded and live a life as pure as this
I still do.... more than Ever now
.
the way the insane billionaires are pushing us and taking more and more freedoms away makes me want to ditch this society who vote for psychopathic pedos to rule their lives over and over again
.
And live a 'real' life closer to nature
@Evan Hodge Idk about all that chief.
@LONE WOLF CREEK I'm happy to hear that.
Looks like someone forgot to switch accounts 😅
I see how old your comment is but I assure you this takes away from anything else.
This movie aged pretty well! I remember getting a kick out of it as a kid. It also hits a different chord now, knowing that Gary Paulson and Ned Beatty are gone... both passed away in 2021 (RIP)
I had no idea Gary Paulsen died man that hurts 😢
She died on Wednesday September 15th due to a heart attack at age 82
Well I guess this is as fitting place as any to hear that news. RIP
RIP to both of them indeed. I hope the opening and ending theme played at their funerals.

My favorite book as a 5th grader!! And now at 29 years, I went looking for the movie and saw this. Totally connects me with my childhood
at my school 6th graders read it
My class read this in 5th grade, I arrived to late(moved from Kansas to NC) to read it but watched the movie in class
My teacher doesn’t let us watch the movie 🍿
I’m in fifth grade currently and I just watched cause it seemed interesting
I’m from New Zealand. My English class read this book in junior high school, will never forget it!
as someone from america who also read it in school i think its amazing how--even across the world--people enjoy this book
I read this novel to my class every year. The students absolutely love it! When I met Gary Paulsen, he said that he felt the movie did not do his book justice. He said it was so poorly done, that he would never allow one of his books to be made into a movie again. I was surprised. I have not shown the movie to my students since his comments. Thanks, Gary, for all your amazing books!
Seems a lot of people enjoy the movie.
I didn't find the movie that bad
😱 I'm jealous you met the man. His words truly made wonders of a picture in my mind, and this movie was garbage in comparison. Reading painted such an amazing image in my head and this was nothing like it.
My teacher rad it to me a couple of months ago
I could agree with that
This book and My Side of the Mountain were two of my favorite books as a child. Now as a middle aged man I'm still entertained by this story. Thanks for sharing.
I’m so glad my 4th grade teacher read these to us
@@rileyjk-yt1006 my fourth grade teacher also read it to us, how can you watch my side of the mountain I know it had a movie version?
@@CarungGaming I’ve never seen the movie for it. The only places you can watch it (according to google) are RUclips, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and Fandango.
Same! Both my favorites as well. There were more books in My Side of the Mountain, and a sequel to Hatchet
You should read Tucker’s Travels. Gary Paulson wrote this western toward the beginning of his career, and it’s just as good Hatchet.
My grandfather owns a ranch about 150 MI outside of Albuquerque, as I was growing up he homeschooled me, I remember doing a Hands-On experiment in the middle of winter cutting wood for the fire enough to last until next winter, amongst other things like spending the weekend in a cave and building a homemade fence with just a hatchet.
We did other Hands-On experiments based off of other classic movies and books such as molding a cave out of a hill and properly burying rations to preserve and prepare without tainting the supplies inside, and taking long hikes in mountainous terrain as seen in dances with wolves.
Hands-On learning wasn't always easy but now that I'm older I understand the necessity of survival.
Wow..I bet you are wiser than most. Bless.
Im 11 and just finished reading this book in class
Same
Why do I have a feeling I know where you are from.
This is a better Hatchet movie than the horror Movie. For context, there is another movie called Hatchet and it's a horror movie and it sucks.
Same a few weeks ago like a month ago
My class wanted to watch the movie but we only saw a clip and my teacher said this was bad
I’ve been looking for this for 10 years, gave up a few years back and just randomly checked..thank you! Watched this with my older brother in the early 90s and have hated planes since lol
Same !!! I never really liked to read when i was younger but i did enjoy this book
I am 75 years old and never read the book but I loved watching this movie.
Read the book. It is even better. Read it several times.

BTW, I'm 78 !
I never read this book - and I'm not even 75!
I read the book and I’m 9 in fourth grade

@Moonthetherian-ee9qb omg same
Oh wow, so that's the name of the movie! I loved reading this book in school, and then watching the movie in class after. Funny story, a few years back I looked for this movie thinking it was just called "Hatchet" and what I found instead was a series of pretty brutal (but fun) slasher flicks haha. But this is the one I really wanted to watch, so thank you!
In 6th or 7th grade our class read this book and after we finished the book we got to watch the movie. I've been looking for this movie for a few years now. I can't believe I finally found it thank you for uploading.
Rest in peace Gary Paulsen... You brought a lot of joy and brought us out of boredom and took us to a whole New world and got us into a lot of things that we never would have been if it wouldn't have been for reading your books dude you touch the whole world so many kids are out and about in the woods today because of the fact they read your book I'm one of them I'm 33 may God keep your soul
I only just read about his death. That's so sad.
The Car was another great book of his….
Touch the heart.
Hatchet series, cook camp, lawn boy, Harris an me were a staple of my bookshelf growing up. Thank you for letting me know to send a prayer to this great man... Rest in peace sir.
Thank You very much from the bottom of my heart. I'm 42 and still remember reading this classic gem 💎 in middle school. We watch the movie 🎬 as well, such good memories thank you again for sharing this and letting a whole new generation of kids experience it. Mad respect. ❤
42 here as well. That book and this movie bring back memories from my childhood.
Back in 98/99 when I was about 7 years old, they showed this movie a few times in star movies. I always got to see a few parts but never the entire thing but this film got stuck in my mind. It's 2022. I'm 30 years old, married. My wife is deep asleep and as I stay awake I google 'kid survives plane crash and bear attack movie'. Here I am. Thank you internet 🥰

Remembered this film in elementary school. I'm glad I am revisiting this years later!
Like many others Hatchet was a middle school book assignment. I was never one for reading but Hatchet was the first novel I truly loved. I read the other novels in the series in my own time. I also remember this film was shown in class after the assignment was over. I finally found it, it can’t be streamed anywhere.
Maniac Magee also and holes lmao 🤣
I was looking for this EVERYWHERE for like a year on ALL streaming platforms and it had just occurred to me to check RUclips. Guess what I found.
I remember watching this movie as a kid. My son just read the book hatchet in school and was telling me about it and how there was a movie too. I knew instantly what movie he meant. I came and found it on RUclips. It's still a good movie!
Watching him use the sharp end of that hatchet for literally everything, especially on that rock... it hurts. 😂
It's Valerian Dragon Steel , NEVER Gets blunt.
I figured it was Beskar
One of my favorite book series as a child. I knew there was a movie, but couldn't find it until now... suddenly it just showed up in my feed! It is surprisingly faithful to the book. Thanks so much for uploading!
The other two kind of sucked sorry

A young kid suddenly lost somewhere in Yukon has to come to grips with his parents splitting up and has to learn to survive. Some key points triggered flashbacks. In the end, he figured out how to make it on his own and had a better understanding of nature and the animals that live in the wild. Never thought traumatic experiences would tie into his ordeal.
I’d much rather be ship wrecked on a deserted island with a 15 year old Brooke Shields!
