I saw her concert at the now-defunct Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont, about 8-10 years ago and met her briefly. It was a great show. Yea, her music is original and a musical book of dreams, actually.
First time I watch this video in years, I haven't watched it since the spring of 1990 when it first came out on MTV when MTV was worth watching. Nostalgia is a wonderful thing.
What I'm about to write here is probably nothing new, but I would say that Suaznne Vega is on the same level as Chuck Berry, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Neil Young, Lou Reed, John Lennon, Joni Mitchell, and others of the sort in terms of artistic merit. Great song and music video Suzanne. Carry on!
i have been a suzanne vega fan for over 20 years, and i still consider DAYS OF OPEN HAND her masterpeice. it says so much to me and i love it to death!!!
This is one of my most favorite of her songs. I consider this song up there with all the other hits. I remember in Spring 90 in college hearing this and was the first song from this album following up to Solitude Standing. I knew right away it was a great song.
Bought this album and a sony walkman in the PX during basic training at Fort Jackson Aug.1990.Kept them hidden the whole time EVERY night i listened to this album.Love Her.
^_^ I'm so glad I found this song again!! This was one of my absolute favorite sings as a child and I started smiling widely when the song started!! I still love this song!
I really love Suzannes 'Bob' style haircut - Think she looks great - That woman has style ! - Even back in the day as a young lady she looked so cool - She played at St.Georges hall in the 1990's - A very intimate venue in Bradford - Where the acoustics are amazing ! - I Was looking forwards to seeing her play ! And my back went and I was laid up - So I missed her show - But I saw a photo of her on stage in the local T&A newspaper (great write up) and instead of her cool style we are all used to! - Suzanne was wearing a mans boiler suit -Strange? - Making a statement I suppose !
The late 1970s, 80s, and early 90s were a great period for women performers: in my random stream of consciousness, Diana Ross, Donna Summers, Debbie Harry, Chrissie Hynde, Kate Bush, the Go-Gos, the Bangles, ... oh yeah, and that Madonna character :)
I always thought Suzanne Vega's sweetness was beautiful, very talented, very stylish, the sweetest beauty and talent in the whole world, I want to be able to meet her in person one day ❤
I'm love by the music of Suzanne Vega. And I wish I could be born in the same age of her, I'd be his husband. I love her... She´s the most beautiful woman that I've seen in the world. Sweet voice and angelical eyes
I really only appreciated your beautiful clear voice recently like a few other singers didn’t appreciate at the time. It’s one great thing about growing up you appreciate good things more xx
I'm going to go out on a limb and say she's truly a Queen of Cuteness. And that her cuteness hid for me a tenacity, focus, and discipline I'm afraid I noticed only much later.
Nope, sadly his career in making music videos stopped somewhere in the mid-90s before I was born in '98. He's got a cool job now though, working for Disney and Pixar trailers.
SteveRunciman I'm only 17 so I don't have a career yet, however I don't think I'll follow in his footsteps -- respectively of course. I'm more interested in political science than film! Still very proud of my Dad's work in the music industry in the 80s and 90s :)

I'm obsessed with this song and video.
it's about a book by the name 'A book of dreams'... give it a look
Love this song. Vega is a music genius.
Suzanne Vega is just fascinating ! I am 50 years old and 30 years of fascination for her !!! ❤️❤️❤️ from 🇫🇷
I went to see and hear Suzanne in a live performance once. She is indeed a most fascinating artist. 💜💜💜

It’s truly timeless ❤💯
An absolutely phenomenal album - a real vision of beauty! ❤️😎
Very different than her first two albums. I did buy the CD and put it on a cassette for my Sony Walkman.
I was so screwed up in the 80's I had been abused but my Art & Music saved me! I love you!
Awesome voice, awesome video!!
Never understood why this wasn't as big a hit as "Luka" or "Tom's Diner", it's such a great song and the entire album is an underrated masterpiece.
Omg I agree whole heartedly, infact 31 yrs later (yikes) I still consider this album Suzanne Vegas masterpiece and I love it to death ❤️❤️
This is one of my most favorite of her songs. I consider this song up there with all the other hits. I remember in Spring 90 in college hearing this and was the first song from this album following up to Solitude Standing. I knew right away it was a great song.
Those two songs are very unique and quirky. This one is somewhat generic-sounding in comparison, I would say.
The "Days of Open Hand" album by Suzanne Vega is my favorite of hers. And, definitely one of my all-time faves amongst my whole cd collection as well.
Those Whole Girls (Run in Grace) and Institution Green - amazing, haunting songs.
Thank you Suzanne for helping me with my insomnia through endless nights.
At least for me, Days of open hand by Suzanne Vega is the most underrated album of the history, she made a incredibly beautiful Folk-pop album
Truley.👍👍👍👍
This song helped me so much in my time of need.
Love her lyrics. And her voice.
Me too. Shes awesome
I haven't listened to it since I was 8.
2024, anyone?
I adore the way that that Vega does her songs, they are always so varied and distinct from each other!
The middle 8 where she says "number every page in silver" is what makes this extraordinary
My favorite Vega song. Always puts a smile on my face and that middle 8 kicks ass. This video married images to the song so well

A sweet memories of a teenage life while hearing this song again, it was prior my life a student! Thanks a lot Suzanne Vega for this!
Linda música, lindo clip. Uma das minhas favoritas da Suzanne.
Su voz me fascinaba .Amor platónico de los 80
i love creativity involved in this song and video -angelic voice
She said she was listening to XTC's "Oranges and Lemons" when making this album and this song really sounds like it influenced its recording.
xnonsuchx I love xtc and I’ll be giving ms Vega a closer listen
Definitely hear the XTC influence in this - the baseline is reminiscent of ‘Mayor of Simpleton’
^_^ I'm so glad I found this song again!! This was one of my absolute favorite sings as a child and I started smiling widely when the song started!! I still love this song!
So excellent. It ever was and is excellent.
Wow! Man Ray
Talent, simple beauty. No auto tune . Bring those days back.
As far as I know she still doesn't or never has used Auto Tune. Doesn't need to since she sings great.
Artists like that still exist. I recommand listening to Laura Marling or Jade Bird :)
Check out Feist.
could have done with it here ; she keeps on missing one particular note by a quarter tone
No tattoos, piercings or other "modern" fakery

Yeah his job's cool cus sometimes I get to see sneak peeks of movies years before they're released to the public.

Jim, according to the song credits it’s Michael Visceglia on five-string bass 🎸

Book of Dreams
Suzanne Vega
Produced by Anton Sanko & Suzanne Vega
Album Days of Open Hand
[Chorus:]
In my book of dreams
[Verse 1:]
I took your urgent whisper
Stole the arc of a white wing
Rode like foam on the river of pity
Turned its tide to strength
Healed the hole that ripped in living
[Verse 2:]
The spine is bound to last a life
Tough enough to take the pounding
Pages made of days of open hand
[Verse 3:]
Number every page in silver
Underline in magic marker
Take the name of every prisoner
Yours is there my word of honor
[Verse 4:]
I took your urgent whisper
Stole the arc of a white wing
Rode like foam on the river of pity
Healed the hole that ripped in living
