See if the cockatoos go for the almond or the treat when offered side-by-side. Then, we present a plate filled with both treats and let the cockatoos choose freely.

Pellets are generally recommended for (captive) parrots by vets, specialists etc, but not by parrots :-) Parrots prefer fatty foods and do not know much about nutritional value, so if given a choice they'll choose nuts & seeds every time. We also have & feed wild sulfurs in our backyard (have the whole same combination of birds in my backyard as you have in yours :-) although not as many). I also give them nuts & seeds, but I take care to limit the amount. Max 3-4 almonds per bird per day, and always in shell so they get more activity time out of them. I also give them walnuts in shell, other nuts, seeds, & seed mix. Their preferred seeds are sunflower, they are like candy for parrots. I give them as treats (also pepita seeds), but take care with the amount - somewhere around 5 - 10 per bird per day generally. Sunflower seeds lack the calcium they need, so if they eat too many VS other foodstuffs, they can get calcium deficiency, which can damage their bones

We’ve also noticed that sunflower seeds are like candy to them, so we are now giving them in the seed mix only. That is a great test. The cockatoos are smart and know that unprocessed food is better for them than processed food. I wish I had the IQ of a cockatoo.
If anyone had the IQ of a cockatoo they too would prefer plain unprocessed food rather than processed food.

Thank you! Glad you found it interesting. In the wild, cockatoos eat grass roots, seeds, nuts, fruits, berries etc. Often, we see them bringing liquidambar seed pods and fruits they pick up somewhere.
