I am alive today because of you. I never had the opportunity to personally thank you, but am so grateful that you were my heart surgeon. Thank you so much for taking good care of me Dr. London.
Having spent nearly 40 years in the cardiac device industry with most if my time spent working with cardiac surgeons and electrophysiologists its refreshing to hear you say “ look at the patient”….👏👏👏
Best advice is to attend one of the programs that train you in cardiac devices like ATI in Greenville SC or PreMD in Boston…they have close to 100% placement post completion with one of the major cardiac device companies…Medtronic, Abbott, Boston Scientific, or Biotronik…I worked with graduates of both programs and its a virtual guarantee to a job in this exciting ancillary field of healthcare
As someone who worked in the medical field for many years and as a patient myself, it’s wonderful to see how you prepare for each day in order to get into your desired mindset. Also how you talk to and listen to your patients and the nurses caring for them. Speaking as a patient myself, that means so much. Thanks for what you do. 😊
Dr London- Thank you for your wisdom and humanity. I grew up in a medical family; my father was a surgeon- an “old school MD” who always still had his black bag by the door, ready to make a house call if needed. My comments, to reiterate you points, in response to this great video: - “knowledge” can be almost worthless without the “wisdom” to know how and when to apply it - the “art of medicine” is as critical to success as the “science of medicine” - nothing can replace “examining your patient” - their body, mind & spirit Keep up the great videos. And thanks for taking the time to create this content!
I had the luck of having my life saved by an incredible surgeon in Nova Scotia, Canada. Dr. Krista de Boer is my Rockstar... Her expertise, dedication and her compassion is second to none in my book. It Amazed me how sweet and upbeat she was and NEVER once did I feel rushed when taking up her valuable time with my questions and conversation. For three weeks she checked on me every single day in the early morning. She even came in to double check on me late one evening before she was going away for a weekend. I quite literally owe her my life.
I know this isn't the same thing you do, but growing up on a cattle farm, I saw my father save the life of dozens of baby calfs, by interventions that weren't double blind studied. We didn't often have time to go to the library and find a book on what to do when you see situation A in the barn, we just reacted and tried everything we could to nurse them to health. We all have to be open to trying different techniques when what we're doing isn't working. I appreciate your insight and informative video.
My partner had one of the best, in my opinion, cardiac surgeons in Nova Scotia Canada. He looked at Patrick, listen to his words and often included me with the visit as well. He saved Patrick’s life twice unfortunately he succumbed two Christmases ago to COVID related ARDS. Dr Keir Stewart was remarkable always with Patrick. Dr Stewart took the time not only to help him but also to get to know him as a person and a patient.
I have been a nurse for 30 years. Regardless of what anyone says when you enter a patient room just look at them. That at most times is what you need to know. I could walk in any room and my gut told me exactly which direction the patient was going.
Dr. London, great channel. I am a vascular surgeon only a few states away from you serving a very similar patient population. One of my favorite aspects about your channel is when you include your family. Did you ever think to do a video discussing how you manage your personal family life with a busy practice, managing call, etc. all while being a good father? I appreciate the medical aspect of your videos for obvious reasons but would you care to expand on the personal side? I think this is something a lot of surgeons, especially in our line of work, struggle with. Thank you and again, great channel.
I appreciate you taking the time to watch my content and I love this comment. Initially I focused on the health and wellness topics because everyone can relate, but I would be happy to share more of my life. Show some more day in the life content with friends and family. The short answer is it isn't easy to balance work and personal life. There aren't enough hours in the day and sacrifices are made but I focus on what is most important to me and do my best to make time for it. Again, thank you for your comment and question.
My wife is a veterinary surgeon, small animal. Thing with the roughly 1800 veterinary surgeons in the US is they have to do all surgeries. Unfortunately this means when they are on call / ER they can, and do, get everything. It's always fascinating for me to see how surgeons of all types go about their mornings. She has a similar routine of setting herself up for the day. She starts very similar to you. She starts with hydration and delays coffee a bit, then sits down and journals and does a mindful guided meditation, then coffee, just one cup. We spend a few moments together and then she leaves for the day. She recently moved into another practice and we moved away from Atlanta. She did a lot of trauma / ER in Atlanta. Since we're getting a little older she wanted to get away from the on call lifestyle and more into a scheduled referral only type of practice. You never know when a dog will show up because a neighbor tried, and failed, to chop its head off with an axe... yeah, it's sometimes crazy. That dog lived by the way. Anyway, thanks for what you do and sharing your routine. Very interesting to see.

Hospital medicine is rife with bureaucracy, overextended nurses, and greed. The intensivist might have made better decisions if he had time. The hospitalists at my facility are so overworked it’s ridiculous. 20 patients a day to see, manage, chart, communicate with families and nurses…not very practical. I’ve been an RN for 12 years and I’m just unhappy with so many things in the field. I’m glad you’ve accepted the game.
I had a bypass just about two years ago. The assessment by a transplant cardiologist for possible stenting (part of kidney transplant workup)revealed that it was not an option. He did not fool around - once he made the assessment they started taking down the room and before I was really coherent, I had an appointment with the surgeon. Scared the hell out of me, but at every step the care team was excellent. Not just the white coats (ARNPs, PAs, doctors) but the nurses. Was it fun? No. Did it suck as much as I feared? Not even close. I recovered well and was back at work in two months, and living a relatively normal life. I lost a lot of fitness and the beta blockers keep me from working out the way I would like, but I can do darned near anything else I want. This is a short summary of my experience, of course - but every bit of the care was excellent.
Not gonna lie, it's great to see stuff like this, you would be stunned how I approach my days compared to you. You're very organized and understand a lot of tricks to keeping your day flowing in a way that's healthy for your mind and body. I approach my days like a drunk cowboy.
I hear ya on the "on call", I am not a physician, but used to work as a paramedic and we did 24-36 hour shifts and waking up intermittently during the night was tough, more because you have to go from being asleep to being wide awake and on your A game in seconds! Hey Doc do you have a spiritual life? Curious to know what your beliefs are and how they impact you in your daily life. If you feel comfortable sharing of course
On September 18/24 I had double bypass surgery and when people ask me how it went, I say, it went very well, but I will never have another one done again because I don’t want go through having it done. Even if it means, all I have is eat ice for the rest of my life. But it has open my eyes to eating better. It doesn’t help that I’ve been a type 1 diabetic for 53 years. 😮😮😮
Doc, just got back CT scan results and they said my calcium score is 148. I’m 43 carry lot of muscle mass use to be bodybuilder used a lot of steroids but only TRT now. I try to eat healthy, very active and work outside year round. Should I be worried? Also just quit drinking alcohol. Thank you!
Jeremy, i was addicted to Adderall and meth for 3 years in my 20s. Im now 35 months clean and don't drink or smoke. Im in great shape and eat healthy. Will my heart be fine? I can run 7 miles in one hour without feeling winded.
I like to get up at 2:30 am and go to bed around 7:30 ish lol.. I learned it is better for the brain if we can. Can be more like 8:30 pm to 3:30 am etc of course. The brain cleans itself with a vacuum of its own.. When we sleep before midnight. Again, the deeper the sleep, the better here too. 🎉
Yes, I was actually tearing up listening to you talk about listening to the patient and not protocol. I am a cardiac patient(putting it mildly, lol) and ICU has almost unalived me twice because they weren’t listening to me. Low blood pressure, sodium and H&H in the tank. They did exactly what they’re supposed. Stopped heart meds(diuretics included) and started pumping me full of fluids. I told him my body is not going to like this. Did I mention one of my heart issues is CHF? Give you one guess what happened within 3 days. He gave me the whole we treat numbers in the icu and there’s protocol. My cardiologist had to come in and kick some butt(figuratively, lol). I was livid.

Even if it means, all I have is eat ice for the rest of my life. But it has open my eyes to eating better. It doesn’t help that I’ve been a type 1 diabetic for 53 years. 😮😮😮
God bless u
Sorry you have to put up with bad attitudes.. It isn't surprising. Take care. I love your wisdom. And how you made a life of helping others. ❤
Cold exposure therapy. Lots of great resources here on RUclips. Look into it and I will do a future video on it!
Thank you!
Welcome to my schedule. Most productive starting early.
The early hours of the day are irreplaceable
Thank you Dr.
Thank you for watching!
I had triple bypass two months ago at 55. Not an easy recovery.
Now you know why Doctors are paid well.....good video.
I appreciate the kind words
Do you do both abdominal and thoracic dissections?
Hello Dr. London! Enjoyed you video. I'll say what my dad said
( Who was at one time was the Chairman of the Board at a Hospital not a doc) If all else fails punt)
Hey doc I know you can’t give medical advise over the phone but couple months ago had what they called panic attack high HR high BP numbness left side they did all the blood work and mri said everything was fine my question is are there anymore test that can be done I’m a 40 year old male have never dealt with anxiety/panic attacks before now
Can you recommend a blood pressure monitor machine?
Hi Dr London! Great video! Question: Can a severe Vitamin B-12 deficiency cause issues with the heart? Thanks! God Bless you!
what kind of expresso machine do u have? do u like it?
Its a Jura and I love it. Definitely an investment but it brought the taste of a coffee shop into my house.
Tons of props and thumbs up for you Dr! I just have a couple things I may disagree with you on. Have you ever heard of Dr. Ovadia?
I worked as a nurse for 20 years in a variety of settings. Resident physicians are often the most difficult to work with because they know it all. Lots of knowledge and very little experience or wisdom.
Defınıtely bed sıde manners are important to understand patıents' concerns and the symptoms of the illness they could not express. God bless you.
Amen
It sounds like you practice medicine with great wisdom.
Lvl 1 data is a starting point, but not everything. This is where having a wise doctor really pays dividends.
Would someone mind sharing the name of that sleep app? Couldn’t quite catch the name - thank you! 😊
The app is called Eight Sleep. I love mine. Here is my partner link if you want to check it out www.eightsleep.com/london/
