The first thing to know about the BMI is that it was created by a Belgian mathematician - not a doctor or health practitioner. In the 1830s, Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet set out not to devise a test to quickly diagnose obesity (which was still years away from being widely perceived as a problem), but to find the "l'homme moyen" or the "average man". His thinking went that you could take thousands of measurements, compare them, and find the ideal weight. Through calculating these samples he found that weight typically increases in relation to the square height of a person. But there were big limitations to Quetelet's experiment. For one, all the participants were western European men. The experiment also had nothing to do with measuring individual health. It wasn't until the 1970s when American physiologist and dietician Ancel Keys and a group of his colleagues promoted Quetelet's Index as the best available way to quickly screen for obesity that it became what we know today as the BMI. But like Quetelet, the Keys study didn't account for all body types. It only measured 7,426 "healthy" men from 12 sample groups. They included American students and professionals, Italian railway workers, men from east and west Finland, Japanese farmers and fishermen, and Bantu men from South Africa (which the study itself says "could not be suggested to be a representative sample ... of Bantu men in general".)

You’re so close to nailing this on the head doc. Drop that word “lean” before the meat and you’ll have it. Animal fat is a health food. Unhealthy fats are the hyper processed seed oils.

Just discovered your channel this week and I must say I'm impressed with the breadth and depth of what you share. For what it's worth I strongly believe that environment is often overlooked. You can guide patients down the right path but if they stay in the same environment the change rarely last. Great channel!

I have been a single mother since 2011. My oldest two “ kids” are raised and on their own. My youngest two daughters are a junior & senior in high school . Groceries are SO expensive right now , it’s tough to buy healthy, organic items . What are the top 2 items that you would recommend I should splurge on that would most benefit my teen daughters and myself ?

100% but whole foods take more time and effort to prepare and especially make taste good. On top of that the effort of planning and making a list isn't negligible compared to buying more processed ready to go meals. I've been using an app that lets me pick meals and then builds a list that integrates quickly into a pick up order. Costs $3 a month but saves a lot of time. I still can't hit it every week and sometimes end up eating like crap when things get extra busy.

Dr. Philip Ovadia, Stay Off My Operating Table (RUclips channel), is a board-certified cardiac surgeon and the founder of Ovadia Heart Health. He is known for his mission to help people improve their metabolic health and avoid heart disease. I’ve learned much from him and a much better starting point for heart health is a CAC, not cholesterol levels.

Notice he says alcohol is, "in question", C'mon man, either it is, or it isn't. He's quick to banish mouthwash with alcohol but not beer, or a cocktails with alcohol that not only enters your mouth but goes to the stomach. I know more people swallow beer and cocktails more than they do, mouthwash.

I have seen in my 60 years of life that people who drink heavily all eventually have to quit or they will die. Better to not start drinking at all in case it becomes excessive.
