I have been sewing for many many years! Stayed away from stretch knits because I couldn't find information! This is extraordinary! Thank you so much,Joy!!!!
I love this video! It's well done, and it is going to help me a lot. I have been sewing for over 50 years, only on woven fabrics. I am confident that I can figure out knits now, even though my sewing machine is a very basic one. Thank you for this!
Thank you for helpful tips on sewing knits - stitch, needle and thread types. Also find using ballpoint needle, walking foot, tissue paper (or knit stabilising tape) helps too.
I had no idea that it would be necessary to use a zigzag stitch! Thank you SO much! I've always had trouble with the seams ripping and never knew how to fix it. Great tutorial!
Now that we are at home more due to COVID-19, I would love to see more Simplicity videos and sew-a-longs. Maybe videos about common mistakes and issues that novice and or experienced sewist run into. Choosing the correct fabric for Simplicity patterns would be great too! I really hope sewing makes a huge comeback in 2020!
Great instructor. Explaining sewing language used, so we learn. Speaking slowly & with well chosen words. I also enjoy the demonstrating what was just said - making this easier to digest. Keep up the great instruction videos.
Thank you for the information given on this video. I do use the right kind of thread but did not know that my needle needs to be blunt like using the needles that you use for jersey material. I also appreciated the fact that today I have learnt to use a zig zag stictch instead of a straight stitch after adjusting it like you have said on your video.
+Thea van der Westhuizen Hi Thea, Thanks for your feedback! We're glad that you've learned from our video. Feel free to subscribe to our channel at ruclips.net/user/simplicityvideo
I would love to see someone make a capsule collection for work or for a season. Then you see things like fabric selection and various sewing skills too.
This video gave some of the most helpful information on sewing with knits. I have had problems with knits, and now I can see why. I was using the wrong type of thread and needle. No wonder my seams pulled and broke! Thank you so much for such a concise, informative lesson. Cathy
+Thrifted Living Hi, We're glad to know that you've found this helpful! Thanks for watching and we hope that you'll also subscribe to our channel for more video: ruclips.net/user/simplicityvideo
+Candice Ayala Thanks, Candice! Don't forget to subscribe to our channel for more videos: ruclips.net/user/simplicityvideo and let us know what other videos you'd like to see on our channel. :)
Great video! Clear and concise. I would also love to see some instruction on cutting out pattern pieces with knits and joining those pieces. Joining sleeves would be a good one.
I'm very new to sewing and sometimes have difficulty with the instructions. I gave up on 1195 for this NYE because the lace attached to the bodice on view D confused me. I like the walk through videos with the different patterns. Would love to have the option of buying a video with a pattern. As a new sewer, I would pay a lot to have the ability to watch someone sew the particular pattern I'm working on.
+Janice Hadfield Hi Janice! Thanks for the feedback and we're glad to be part of your sewing journey! Feel free to contact us if you need help with any of our pattern: E-mail: info@simplicity.com or by phone at 1-888-588-2700 (Monday-Friday, 8:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. EST). Wonderful tutorial!!! Very clear and simple, with a great hostess, who went right to the point; very professional. I'm a costume designer, and my 2 favorite fabrics on stage r velvet and chiffon, but I find them almost impossible to work with. Will u have some tutorial on these??????? Please!!!!! Thank u.
Great video. I would like to see a video on sewing for small dolls i.e. Barbie, 8", etc. I am an experienced sewer, but have trouble when it comes to such small sizes. Thank you.
+S Lee Thank you! We're glad to know that you've learned a lot. We will forward your comment to Joy. Don't forget to subscribe to our channel for more sewing videos: ruclips.net/user/simplicityvideo
Thank you! I'm just learning to sew (started about 3 months ago with masks because of Covid). I realized I really enjoyed the process, so I've done a few crafty projects, and I've been moving into clothes. I've heard that knits are very difficult to work with, so I'm trying to learn as much as possible before attempting a shirt I'd like to make (again, but with a drapier fabric). lol I'll definitely look for more of your videos. :-)
Very good information you gave, I always have problems with stretch fabrics. Specially the cotton you suggested. I didn’t think that the polyester cotton will be best for stretch fabrics. Will remember that and try the zig zag stitch....very happy to have seen your video...🌹❤️🌹❤️
Great video. Nice sewing machine as well. Is it for consumer purchase? A video like this for woven fabric, heavy fabric (wool, denim, leather, upholstery), and specialty fabric like sequin. Knowing the right needles, stitch width and length, techniques, etc
+Jaimarie Cherie Thank you! Let us know if you have any specific sewing topic/technique that you'd like us to feature in our next video. Also, don't forget to subscribe to our channel: ruclips.net/user/simplicityvideo
Very helpful. I’m learning how to sew clothes now that I’ve done some quilting and masks. My machine keeps grabbing the knit fabric into the feed dogs which is frustrating me a lot because I have to take the whole bottom plate off to release the bobbin thread down there. I ended up sewing the seams with my serger but I can’t use the serger for the waistband and hem. I’m sure it’s something in my settings… need to bust out the owners manual.
Great presentation! Very informative, and very concise. I would have liked to watch the actual sewing a bit more, and then a close up on the finished seam, held still for the camera. But other than that, really great.
+Mz.Choize H. Hi, That was a Brother Simplicity machine. Product code: 885-U24. Thanks and feel free to subscribe to our channel for more sewing videos: ruclips.net/user/simplicityvideo

Is a stretch stitch the same as an "elastic stitch" on my BrotherLX3817A? I have been asked to take in the side seams of about six boys' basketball jerseys and I'm a fairly new sewer, please help! I love this video, thank you !
Hi, i enjoyed your video very much. I have a question as to how to get the knit fabrics placed out properly when i cant get it to lay down with out wrinkles, I know the selvages have to be together but then the fold isn’t smooth enough to be able to put the pattern on it and pin it.. help!
Could you possibly always use a light fabric color and a dark thread color that way we can always always follow exactly what you're talkin about very light fabric preferably white and dark thread preferably black
This was very informative! But I noticed that you didn't mention anithing about sewing a zipper onto knit. I've done it a couple of times and had to get help. >_< Is there a trick when sewing a zipper onto knit?
+Brigitte Hardwick Hi Brigitte, Thanks for the feedback! Zippers are definitely tricky in a knit. Since lighter weight knits will not do very well with a zipper since the fabric moves around quite a bit and can be challenging, try using a thicker ponte type fabric. Also, an invisible zipper goes in the easiest with an invisible zipper foot on the sewing machine. Hope this helps. I was always taught to test for the stretch ratio by stretching the sample at least 8-10” away from the selvage, for accuracy. Is this still true today? Or do different rules apply now?
My problem with knit, is , that it curls on the sides, then when I lay pattern on it, cut out my pattern piece, its curly, looks terrible. What can be done?
Could you please show in detail how to test for stretch against the back of the packet. I'm not so clear on the EXACT amount of stretch we are looking at. How much farther past the actual packet are we stretching? Please help as I need help here.
Any advice on interfacing for knit fabrics? Been sewing for over 10 years and I still don't know much about whether or not stretch interfacing exists or is even possible.
+Katie George Hi! Yes, there are knit stretch interfacings available and those are best to use with stretch knits. Always test on a scrap piece of fabric to make sure the interfacing and fabric work the way you expect. If you get your desired results, then that is the interfacing for your project. Hope this helps! Don't forget to subscribe to our channel for more videos and let us know if there's a video that you'd like to see on our channel.
Not everyone uses the newst, and greatest machine. So info on what setting a,zig zag stich should be would be helpful. How about a closer look at the stretch stich so we can find something close on our machines.
Hi thanks for yiur helpful video. I have a question. Im a new beginner and I am trying to sew with a knit fabric but my fabric keeps getting sucked into the feed dogs. Can you explain what i may be doing wrong. Thanks in advance for your help. Much appreciated

Great video. I’ve learned a lot. Thank you
Thank for a very informative video! I would like to know which model of brother sewing machine you used in this video?
This was all very helpful! I've been dropping half of my zigzag stitches and i wonder if it's because I'm using cotton thread 🤔
Nice to know because I start my sewing project start tomorrow with knit. Thanks.

Great video, really helpful.
What if you only have a straight stitch machine? Would a larger stitch length work?
the speed of the video was good and the information was well presented...I do wish you had used white thread so that I could see the stitch better.
Thank you! I needed this!👍🏻
Would like to see a sewing with sequins! Thamha
thefabfive89 you have to remove the sequins from your seam allowance to sew it, it looks like a huge pain in the butt lol
Why not use a high contrast thread? I can't see your seams.
+Gina Bisaillon, excellent idea!!!
absolutely!

When you burn polyester it makes a hard bubble whereas cotton does not as it is natural.
