Came up on a blow down across the driveway. It happens regularly throughout the winter months. Time to pull the STIHL MS251 chainsaw out of hibernation and mount my Carry All on the kubota B2601 compact tractor and trailer the Split-Fire 3255 log splitter on the back. Let's block and split the logs and get a little more firewood into the shed. Come along for a few minutes with me, out here in the outdoors, at the cottage. Cheers!

When the scene changed tot he shed near the boiler and the wood was being unloaded, I thought that you looked a lot younger in the woods. Then I realized there were two different men. Looks like a nice day in the woods. The good thing about trees near the driveway is that you don't have to go far to get them.

I have 2 miles of trails on 80 acres of timber in northern Mn. So I am continually playing catch up to storm damage. But I haven't cut a green tree in years. I salvage the hardwoods and a little Aspen. Good problems to have! Thanks for the video!

I like the fact that I saw your bar flipped. I watch another channel and he uses his chainsaw all the time and yet I have never seen that bar flipped. Every time I take a file to my chain I flip my bar.

We use the same set up with our compact tractor. Using a carryall with a hitch to pull the splitter works really slick. We added a flip-up wheel jack to our splitter so we can detach and adjust the level while we are splitting and then load the carryall and loader with the splits for travel back to the wood rack. I think that a carryall is about the slickest thing I've seen for a compact tractor for carrying all your stuff - we use ours all the time. Good video.
Good morning Fritz! Thanks for sharing your setup. That is a smart idea putting the wheel jack on it. It must make levelling it much easier than trying to move it around to find a level spot - especially in the forest. Having a carry all is handy for sure. I realized quickly that tractors don't have trunk space. Thanks again - have a great week!
@@GPOutdoors We found that a boat trailer round circle wheel chock with an indent for the wheel makes a perfect chock for the splitter. It holds the splitter in place and we can adjust the level with the crank. The wheel jack also makes it easier to maneuver around in the pole barn. Cheers!
Handling wood in the cold, covered with snow is very slippery on painted metal. I've seen suggestions in other comments that make sense. Rubber mat would do the job I think. Anyways, it worked well! So having trees falling on your driveway requires you to carry a chainsaw or a good flashlight! Thanks!

I have a similar splitter. I see they have made some changes or options to the newer models. It would be nice to have the log lift and the taller blade. Nice video!!

I keep my mini van fully equipped for that reason, cut blow down on way home, and toss into van ... then on the weekend have a swinging good time with the axe!

You need some of that 60 grit anti slip safety tape on your log lift table to keep the logs from wanting to vibrate off!

Not too far north - just outside Haliburton.
Over the river and through the wood to grandmothers house we go, the kubota knows the way to carry the splitter through the white and fluffy snow!...Was I the only one singing this in my head during the first few minutes of this video?
GP, it looks like the carry all works great for your setup to load and unload. One additional feature I added to my carry all is a hydraulic top link. It allows me to just dump off the wood if I’m in a hurry to get another load. Not sure how it will work on your carry all being it has a longer bottom than mine. I installed one on my dads tractor that is equipped with a 3 point quick hitch and it is nice to have the ability to adjust the angle of the three point attachment like pallet forks, bale spear, landscape rake, snowblower, etc.

Filled my b2301 with wood like that on my carryall. The front end got very light and the tires lost steering ability once in a while with a full 1/3 cord loaded.
Good morning - thanks Mike. Some good info for folks know. On the B, I have filled the back right up with cherrywood without any issues. A good point though for folks, to get a good feeling for how much they can put on the lower lift arms relative to the weight of the tractor. Cheers!

Neat little trick you learned there with splitting. May I suggest putting some heavy rubber mats on the log lift and lining along side the ram with the same for traction so the logs don't move around so much? Heavy duty glue should be able to secure it. GP, general purpose. 🤔🤔🤔

@@GPOutdoors I don't know if you can get it up there, but 3M makes a product called body adhesive that sticks to anything. Needs to be applied in warmer weather. Or screw it down. 🤔🤔🤔
See if you can hook or tie rubber bungee cords to the lift table for the rounds to sit on, this should solve the problem, just don’t have them too tight or loose, just enough to give some resistance to the wood on metal with a snow/ice layer

Good morning Michael! Yes, it was frosty for sure today. Correct. I had the Mingo Marker but I brought the 14" wheel and Guy likes his wood at 16". The length from the tip of the bar to the housing is exactly 16" so I use it to estimate when I don't have the Mingo. Enjoy the weekend and all the best!
GP, do you know if the Split-Fire have an available 4 - way splitter head you can replace the current head with?
I see you split once, then stack the 2 pieces back to split again. a 4 way would just take one shot per log. Ive seen it on other splitters, and wondered if its an option for the Split fire. Great Video by the way!

Good job on stacking the splits on the splitter, to save time. That may have reduced your split time on that wood 20-30%. The tractor with the snow blower, carry all, and wood splitter sure is long. I have a strobe light like yours, that I use on the ROPS of the BX some. Do you have an email I can contact you at? I have an idea I want to run by you.

Have you considered getting a small battery powered chainsaw? While I have a bunch of Stihl saws, which are awesome, I recently bought a DeWalt 18V chainsaw. I already have the batteries from other DeWalt tools, so the choice was easy. But it's a great saw for a quick few minutes work. It could be kept inside your truck for late night driveway roadblocks. Its best feature being ready to go at a moments notice.

That is a great idea - I have not looked into the battery operated ones but I often forget to throw the saw in the back of the truck so when I drive in, to find a tree down, I am usually without a saw and end up having to walk in the rest of the way. Good morning Mike! I was fortunate - my neighbour Guy knows how to weld so he welded it up for me from some old material he had in his shop (C channel). But I know you can get a frame from Farmer Equipment Sales if you live in Canada or if in the US, I believe King Kutter makes one as well. Hope that helps. Cheers!
GP, guessin, you carry a chainsaw in the back of your pickup now! Had the same scenario on my drive to the cabin with a blow down. Really sucks to park and walk in. Also wondering if you got any pull offs/ turn around spots on that long drive, that saves from backing up the whole way?

Yes, there are three spots along the driveway where we cleared out a small area so that if two vehicles meet, one can go back and pull off the driveway to allow passage. Quite often , I forget to take the saw when I leave, so often, I end up finding the blowdowns when I don't have the saw in the back. LOL. Murphy's law, I guess. Thanks for the great questions. @@GPOutdoors I carry a battery powered chainsaw 14" bar wifh me at all times. Lost count of how many times it has come in handy and the best part, no petrol smells in the car.

GP, do you wish you had a cab on that tractor?
Ahhhh. the cab question. Well, this time of year for sure, Scott, but in the other 3 seasons I spend a lot of time in the forest so it is best I don't have expensive glass panels surrounding me. I have thought about possibly getting one of those cab units you can put on and remove but haven't spent too much time on it. I figure that maybe in the future, after I get more experience operating the tractor, I might consider an upgrade. By then, I will probably be more experienced to manage a cab through the forest. Good morning and thanks for the feedback. I understand. I am pretty fortunate to have companies loan me equipment to try out from time to time on the channel and I try to balance references to the company with the actual content. Perhaps I can do a better job at times, but I feel it is the least I can do in return for using the equipment. I certainly don't sell it, or tell anyone to buy specific equipment, in the videos, nor do I get any financial compensation for using it.
