  • Today, I try something new that many subscribers suggested I try. I attach the BECO clamp on pallet forks to the bucket on my kubota B2601 compact tractor and take to the log pile, to block with my STIHL MS251 chainsaw and split firewood with the BRAVE dual split log splitter. Let's give it a try. Here at the cottage in the outdoors. Cheers!

    Great video Gord . Many good camera angles . Your one of the few guys that have shown a Mingo Marker and actually use it . You have a nice log splitter there . No need to rush and see have fast you can split the would . What's with some of these guys timing themselves . You're outside and enjoying the outdoors . Isn't that what life is all about ? You don't burn any wood in your cottage but you are always helping out your neighbor . Your a good man Gord . Wish more people were like you .

    Hi Gord,
    Nice work with the pallet forks. I use them all the time on the Bobcat tractor at work on the wood shop side for moving logs around the yard and slabs from the sawmill into the kiln and then into storage once they are dry. I also use them on the Distillery side for moving product and materials around the warehouse. They are very handy!

    GP, I'm sure you are already keenly aware, but please use caution when cutting with multiple logs laying in parallel in close proximity. When the tip of the bar extends past the log you are cutting and it touches the log behind, depending on the angle of contact the tip can catch and kick back. The saw can come back and up with some pretty good velocity. Forks look like a great way to go.

    • @GPOutdoors

      Good morning and really good advice Terry. I am always keenly are of the kickback. But always good to get a reminder to keep it top of mind. A young friend of mine got himself killed when a log rolled over the top of his bucket and down the arms. I know that people will say he shouldn't have lifted the FEL so high with a load of logs, but he wasn't a stupid kid... just a hard worker who had done it a million times before, but this one time bit him hard. I don't want to sound like a nanny, but I sure like the added safety of your grapple.

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  4 года назад

      Good morning Robert, and you don't sound that way at all. I am happy you cared to mention it. Sorry to hear about your friend. The grapple definitely has a lot of control to it. A good tale to keep us mindful of being safe and careful. Even the smallest logs I was lifting weigh a lot and can do a lot of damage easily. Thanks for sharing the story - always helpful to keep me focused. Be well and thanks again!

    Love my clamp on forks.Paid $180 on Amazon .I use super heavy duty Ratchet straps in the holes of the uprights that curl around the back of the bucket and clamp on the blade that way the blade of the bucket does not get bent. The best are still skid steer forks but my tractor did not come with quick attach bucket. Take my advice and buy a plastic pallet . It goes right over the forks and makes an awesome platform for firewood. Wooden ones just break apart. Plastic they are durable. As described I roll the big knuckles on to the pallet and keep them waist high as I load on the splitter. The less work I do with my back the better. When you split that wood after cutting just roll the pieces in your bucket. You would have saved a lot of steps and wear and tear on your back. Hope this helps.

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  4 года назад

      Good morning Jim! Those are some innovative suggestions. It would have saved them from falling on the ground and having to bend over and lift etc. Very creative. I will have to keep in mind. I am not sure where I'd get any plastic ones but will try to pick up more wooden ones in the future and try that out. I like the idea of being able to lift and hold the platform right beside the splitter and just roll the blocks onto it. Thanks! Have a great week Jim!

    I've been planning to do the same sorta thing with my clamp-on pallet forks: lift/separate/trim/carry several small felled trees to use as a hugelkultur base in newly-built raised beds. Figured it was the only way for me to do it quickly/easily, since I don't have a grapple.

    Love the videos! A recommendation that I do all the time. In the video at 5:25 where your trying to pickup the frozen logs, next time you try that put the loader in float then curl the bucket down. This dose two things, first it puts the lifting force on one log not a 3 or 4, second your using the curling function to break the log free, as you know that has more force that the lifting cylinders. Keep up the good work!

    Good job GP. We've been hauling back to our shops in log form for decades anytime it can be accomplished and I see you've found the benefits of doing it that way. One thing I'd do in your situation, being as how I'm quite a bit older and a LOT lazier than you...I'd use my foot to roll a bunch of those perfect rounds in the general direction of the Dual Split to conserve the energy walking back and forth. They won't get any more impacted with the snow than they are laying there on the ground by the loader. Even if you can only kick 6 or 8 at a time think of the steps you'll save. LOL. The forks are a boon to anyone's blocking practices. Minimize the bending over, minimize potential to hit the dirt...oops, can't say that about steel though.... Again, good job sir.

    Hi GP, that is a great idea with the pallet forks. Have you noticed any flexing in the bucket when you use the pallet forks with heavy items? I bet if you get into the log pile with a very long pry bar or very long 2x4 you could loosen up your pile before hand. Cheers!!

It saves wear and tear of bucket. I put one one each fork, but maybe just one in the center makes better sense. Ash Bore has killed off my trees here in UpState NY. Disappointing, as my property has a lot of Ash, and I had considered it a life’s supply of firewood, as well as some chainsaw mill supply.

    Hello from New Hampshire. I enjoy your channel. I bought a B2650 back last August. I’ve learned a lot from you. Just curious why you went with clamp on VS quick attach forks. I’ve used my forks as much as the grapple and those two more than the bucket. Snow is on its way though.

      Good morning Joel! That's great - I hope you are enjoying it - the 2650 is a good tractor, I think. That's a good question. The reason is I actually didn't think I had any use for a seton forks. But then, Kevin at Farmer Equipment Sales told me I'd be surprised at how handy they would be and loaned me this set to try out. I am finding that they are really helpful and I have started to see that I have several good uses for a set. So I may look into getting a full QC set of them. They are also pretty handy because Guy can use them on his L series as well (he does not have a quick connect loader). We often share attachments between us. Thanks again - have a great week!

    I have the L3901 and i feel its lifting power is really weak when i chain a log to the bucket it just doesnt want to lift ,I would love to buy a grapple but worried i would just be wasting my money...I see what your lifting and just amazed ,, when I take it in I guess I will see if my pump is weak.

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  4 года назад

      Good morning Mike. That is really surprising. Many folks have the 3901 and have said they really like them. If I may offer a suggestion, if you look in your Loader manual (not the tractor manual) you received with the tractor, on page 4 you will find a chart that shows the amount of weight the loader can lift (or should be able to lift) at different points (ie at the pins, or 'x' millimeters forward from the pins etc). It says that you should be able to lift 1,182 lbs , up to 5 feet off the ground (at the front of the bucket). On the next page there will be a graph that shows the weight it can lift at certain heights from the ground (just FYI). I would go find a log or a rock out on the property that weighs around 1,000 lbs. You will find numerous calculators online that give you the weight of a given log if you enter the length of the log, the average trunk diameter and type of wood. There are also calculators online for giving you the estimated weight of a rock if you enter the type of rock, and the three dimensions of it. Then, see if the loader lifts it easily (with the throttle at full RPM's). If it does, then the hydraulics are probably ok, I would think. If it doesn't, then I think that would indicate maybe something needs to be fixed. Hope that helps a bit and best of luck Mike!

      Hi Steven. I think for sure you need the binder and chains. I tried it without at first and the bottom of the bucket will start smiling pretty quick. You might be surprised at how small the pricing gap may be. :)

      Good morning Joshua. It was a good idea I saw on Martin's channel - DIYMyWay. The clamp on forks are attached to the bottom of the bucket and when lifting weight, it can cause the bucket to "smile"(bend) - all the weight is on the bottom so the binder and chain allows me to support the bottom of the bucket with the top of the bucket. So far it works great - the bottom doesn't bend anymore when I lift something. Hope that helps. Cheers!

      Good morning. I agree with you Merton. Yes, I think the logs were large and frozen and the B did not have enough power to break them up that far forward of the pins. The grapple probably had a better chance since the action is much closer to the pins and the grapple jaw also could have helped to break them up. I should have put it on just to see - I think that would have been a good comparison to watch. All the best!

    So Gord, what’s the verdict? Grapple or pallet forks? I think it’s clear that the pallet forks are better for raising the logs for cutting since there are only two steel extensions. I have used my grapple to lift the logs for bucking into blocks but about a half hour in when I was going a little too fast, I “sharpened” the chain on the steel grapple cross-member! However, the grapple is more secure in picking, transporting,and holding the logs securely, so I’m really curious as to your thoughts.

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  4 года назад

      LOL! We have been pretty close to 'sharpening' a few times as well with the grapple. My thoughts Dave: grapple is best for picking up logs in the forest, or anywhere, and placing or piling them. We also have been known to cut all the blocks right through while being held in the grapple too - far more control and more expedient I think. But I'd have to say for log piles, it was much more efficient and enjoyable to run the forks in, grab two or three at a time, take them over to the splitter, hold them at a nice, comfortable cutting height and block them all without having to drop and cut anything on the ground, except the few quick small cuts - I think this works much better. Both demonstrate their strengths in these different areas. Really happy I tried it out. Have a great week and enjoy the heat of the cab!

    • @profdave2861
      @profdave2861 4 года назад +1

      Thanks for the reply on that, Gord. Sounds like sage advice. With my bush lot an hour and a half from home, it’s been a challenge to figure out whether to block and split the wood there or to consider bringing it home in logs on my float (which requires side racks on the float that I have the hardware for but haven’t built yet!). To date I’ve been blocking it at the bush lot and splitting at home, but it’s a lot of handling. The pallet forks would be handy up there for blocking but I use them quite a bit at home to move other equipment around. With winter seemingly upon us I’ll have a few months to contemplate my plans since it’s now too snowy and slippery for tractor work in my hilly bush property.
      Hmmmm.... maybe a second set of forks? My wife would probably think I have fully lost my mind at that point LOL!

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  4 года назад

      Good afternoon and thanks very kindly for the comments Paul. I am happy you are enjoying it. They are BECO forks - the folks at Farmer Equipment Sales loaned them to me. They are good if you only have an occasional use for forks but if you have a regular need, I would consider getting a full Quick Attach set. Once you begin to drop the bucket down, you can no longer see the forks, but again, great if you don't have a regular need for forks - you can save a few $$. I have not tried it, but I don't think it will work well with the tooth bar. Most likely the space between the "lips" of the forks will not be wide enough to slide over the tooth bar, and if it did, the flat edge of the fork, which normally presses up against the flat edge of the bucket (which helps to hold the forks from sliding sideways) would be pressed up against the teeth of the toothbar, which is jagged and not flat. So my thoughts are probably not a good idea. Hope that helps a bit. Have a great week and thanks again!
