Now this machine is the bomb! Great mechanism requires both hands to release the ram. Also simple placement of the rounds is effective. Not as violent as the Gripo yet far more smooth in operation! Great review GP. Always fun and instructional vid's. Cheer's. And the funky music was the charm!
Thank you for you very much for your review. I really like this machine. I have the DR Rapid Split which is very similar in function but I like the setup on this Oregon machine better. I like the placement of the safety lever. I will make a suggestion that will speed up the process quite a bit for you. When you split a half round, just leave it on the table rather than picking each piece up and throwing it into the bin. The next half you split will push it in the bin without you touching it. It will save you a lot of time on larger jobs. I think i mentioned this before

Impressive! Appreciate the different views also! We removed a cluster of Silver Maples near my compost pile that have seen their day. The largest had a trunk diameter of 110"!

Ash is always easy to split, I don't think it would be so easy splitting oak thanks for the video.

I had an Old Montgomery Wards splitter from the early 1970's about ten years ago that worked just like this.

GP Outdoors we have been in the bubble so far this year when the storms have hit here . They have split and went around us. THANK YOU LORD ! I sat here this morning watching RUclips on my iPad and had the iPhone on the weather channel and watched the storm go West and East of here with a little rain and noise ! @m9 ovich That's interesting know thanks, I've only ever worked with hydraulic splitters. It'd be cool to have a clear plastic backside on the engine cover to be able to watch the rack and pinion do its thing, like the window on a nice automatic watch.

Looks like you're really enjoying a great spring day!
The Oregon splitter seems like the perfect splitter for smaller logs in the 8"-10" range.
But I have to say that the Brave 20 Ton splitter is the way to go. It seems faster, especially as it will split in both directions, and the fact that the splitting knife is so tall. I watch you using the Kinetic splitter and it seems that about every third piece needs to be pulled apart by hand.
Also enjoying coffee in my GP Outdoors mugs! LOL

Hey Gord it handled 24 in. logs great. I see that machine would be the perfect splitter if it had a heavy log hydraulic lift assist, but does the job as is.

So what is the verdict, the Oregon or the Brave duel split? I like the fact that the Oregon processes the wood in one direction so that it can be shoved into the trailer. The Brave seems to have more power for a similar speed because of the two direction split.
To me I have noticed the true time saver on splitting is to touch the piece of wood as few times as possible from bucking it all the way to the woodshed, I have not yet sorted out how to be more efficient at that.
Good morning TGC! Me too. Still trying different methods of getting the most efficient process. The jury's still out on that question. I love the BRAVE hands down, but this one is starting to grow on me as well. I'm looking forward to trying it out on some much bigger stuff soon when I can find some. I'm impressed with that splitter. I would like to try some of the oak rounds we have here. 24x24 is a regular size here in VA. Have you noticed any maintenance issues with the splitter. Good to see you G.P. Thanks for the update great video.
Morning Ronald. It is working out very well so far. We have very little oak in the area for some reason - barely any, actually but I will ty to find some big maple or ash wood soon to try it out. No maintenance issues so far but I need to look into it and see what the regular or long term maintenance looks like. Be well and have a great weekend!
Love the set-up, GP. Fine job that splitter does. So has your wife said, "what are you gonna do with all that tractor stuff?" "There's no place to store it". If she did, I sure would like to hear your response, GP....ha 😊. When a package is delivered here by UPS, FedEx or USPS....I hear what's that and what's that for. That Oregon kinetic splitter is doing a great job at splitting everything that you've thrown at it. Even your 'favourite' nasty stringy elm it handled. This is a good value splitter , in my humble opinon, for those that have a decent amount of firewood to split and want to do it reasonably fast. It's hard to beat the simplicity of a fly wheel and a rack and pinion gear system. No hydraulics to deal with.

Good Morning GP....and hey I'm an early viewer for a change !! LOL. I had to chuckle at the first ad, here you are splitting heating wood and the first commercial was for Propane for your home. Again, I remain impressed with the kinetic splitter. I would though like some input from the aspect of the long term effect on the wear points of the latching mechanism. I wonder just how much maintenance may be required or at least what they suggest the cycle life is on the parts that hold the ram back ready for the next strike. Another great lead-in looking over the beautiful lake sir. We are shooting for 80 F (26C) today after 45 (7C)for the last week. No snow though !! You win !!

I have one of these. My only complaint is the wedge needs to be about 4 inches taller. Also I highly recommend turning the fuel off a letting it run out of gas. Mine I left the fuel on and drained the entire gas tank into the crankcase

Good day Don. It works. My back feels a lot better. If the rounds are too heavy for my little biceps to lift (like that 2 foot maple -LOL), then I use the tractor. But hands down, it is so much easier on the back. And like any tool, the more I use it, the more used to it I am. hope that helps. Have a great week!
GP, do you have any problem with wood ticks when you split early in the season? If so how do you control them? The Oregon does a nice job. Keep up the informative and enlightening videos. Thanks for all the work! Wayne

Good day John. That's a great question. I often split different ways and sizes so folks can see how the splitter works in different ways or scenarios, but primarily based on weight. For example if the firewood is for my father in law, I cur them really small so they are much lighter. Thanks for the great question. Have a good weekend!

Morning Tony. Surprisingly we have almost no oak here at all. Very rare - in fact I had a sapling and built a frame around it and chicken wire on the bottom to protect it. Primarily Ash, Maple, Elm and Bass here.
Hey Gord! Great channel - great video work. Is the travel length on the ram adjustable? Seems if the ram could go a bit further you would not to have to 'tear' the log apart. Also, could you open the sides of the splitter so that we can how the kinetic mechanism works? I like the kinetic idea, but too bad it does not have the hydraulic ability to lift the heavy logs onto the table. Cheers from Mike in SW Ohio.

Morning Gord- thought I’d weigh in on the chainsaw topic that Don brought up below, which as you know I’ve done before LOL! For the amount of cutting you do, and while I know they’re not cheap, I’d highly recommend the “forestry” (pro) series Stihl. I have the MS250 (virtually the same as the MS251) and it’s a great all around saw, but I also own the MS261C AND the MS362C. Not long ago I was cutting with the MS261 and nicked the blade on one of our plentiful Ontario rocks, so I grabbed the MS250 and kept cutting. Yes, I noticed the somewhat lesser power (although the 250 is still very decent in that regard), but what I immediately felt was the increase in vibration on the hands. Again, the 250/251 has good vibration damping, but the MS261 is simply amazing - almost no “buzz” on the hands. That, along with the extra power and professional level components, make the MS261 worth every penny. Your hands will thank you later in life! And the extra power with the same weight will get you to the end of your day over a beverage with Guy and Bob sooner!
Oh, and as for the MS362C - it’s a fantastic saw, but I don’t use it much for the very reason you mentioned in your video. The average tree in our neck of the woods just isn’t big enough to justify the larger saw (although when you need it, the 362 is awesome). My recommendation is a MS 261C-M with an 18” bar. You’ll never need another saw!
Hello Dave , I'm in eastern Ontario! I bought a Ms 261 In the winter, The power to weight ratio is amazing, but I find mine a little thirsty on fuel. Not sure ,still have to talk to dealer.I waited to they went on sale ,saved abit. I own mostly Stihl All my life, I'm old school and love the old saws better, so I really had to think about buying this new saw, After doing some research on this saw ,they said a 20% saving on fuel( Not so sure about That) Take care
Hi John - that’s an unusual characteristic for the 261C. How may tanks of gas have you put through it? It seems to take 5-10 tanks for the Stihls to break in and come up to full power, and they may use a bit more fuel when they’re new. I bought mine slightly used, less than a year old, and it had had about 5 tanks of use (which I believe because it looked brand new and he gave me 5 of the 6 little oil bottles that he bought with the saw). It worked great from the moment I fired it up. Ive been really impressed with the low fuel consumption with mine. I just did a search and couldn’t find anything on line about that issue. You could try the recalibration procedure and see if that helps (it’s simple and the instructions are in the manual). Failing that, i agree you should take it to your dealer while it’s under warranty.
What general area of eastern Ontario do you live in? I’m about half an hour north of Kingston but also have 100 acres north of Perth.

But grew up between Godfrey and the town of Westport,near Wolfe Lake, The dealer where I bought it didn't go over anything with me,including the calibration. Being a man ,I didn't look in the manual to later.That's when i discovered the calibration among other things. Asked about this ,dealer didn't know.I did do it once (found it a little confusing)not sure if I did it right, saw runs fine and I likely put a least 15 tanks in it. My old 036 is better on gas!. I don't know why the owner is left to do this and why the dealers are not taking care of this. All he told me was to make sure I warm up the saw before I use it. The dealer knows I've cut wood my whole life, and likely figured I know how to use a saw,right? There are some other people on RUclips that are saying the same thing, one guy has 2 MS 261's ....one is great on gas and the other one is hard..????. Take care
Sorry to hear your dealer wasn’t helpful. I think the warranty is valid at any dealership, so it might be worth asking another dealer to check it out. Ward’s Marine in Kingston has some very good techs - maybe just a call might determine if they have some idea as to what’s causing the higher fuel consumption. It’s strange because you would think if it’s burning more fuel, it would be running rich and you’d notice it in the cutting performance. In any case I hope it gets sorted out.
I know the area around Wolfe Lake very well - great place to grow up! And my two older kids live in your neck of the woods - one in Perth and one near Tichbourne.

Thanks for the video, it was what I needed to make my decision. Yes this video fully convinced me not to buy this machine or one similar. The total failure to address the #1 questions on everyone’s mind is enough to detour me. Add in some ridiculous reviews, that’s the preverbal icing on the cake.
This splitter will not split anything more than kindling. Prove me wrong!

Just a note for you - I don't get paid or sponsored to show you different products - but I show you everything when using it - the good and the bad and let you good folks see how it performs and make your own decisions. I have been fortunate to use 9 different splitters on the channel so far and to answer your question - yes it splits wood - not kindling. I personally don't like kinetic splitters but it does split and it splits well. There are several other videos on the channel homepage where I split various species of hardwoods on this splitter. Sorry Gord not a fan of the Kinetic splitter. Mind you I've never used one just an opinion from watching your videos. See the benefit of the table to catch the rounds after being split. As I have mentioned before I have used a Wallenstein 30 ton splitter for the last 12 years. Never had an issue. Starts on the first or second pull every time. Added benefit of a regular splitter is being able to split your kindling with it. Yeah lazy man's way but a lot easier on my ageing back. Cheers from eastern Ontario.

We would cut ours in 26" pieces and the 13 " thick rounds we would quarter the pieces they wasn't to little of pieces they would burn longer

I don't like the 2 hand control to operate the spliter. I know it's probably for safety but not for me. I'm 70yr old with all my fingers and have been working with wood machines all my life.
My head engages then my hands. I've just finished splitting 60 inch yes 5foot diameter stringy Blue Gum hard wood. Had to lift them on to my splitter with the digger.
LoggerJohn01 - Mine, on warm days, began stalling at warm idle and then being hard to restart. Sort of like it was flooded or vapor lock. Also began having difficulty with it coming up off idle when warm. The dealer reprogrammed the computer and appears to be running better than ever. I was only on my 4 or 5th tank of fuel when issues started. Haven't ran it much since the dealer did their thing.
