Hi GP! Ah! A good day of outside work! Like you said, the nice thing about living in the country is you can still work with your friends at a distance and still get things done. That kinetic splitter is a very nice device indeed! It even impressed Guy, so that’s saying something. Thanks for sharing! Cheers!
Good mornin GP....that splitter makes fast work of those rounds! Was hoping you'd keep that cold air up your way but instead it's coming down here for the weekend...lol...low of 28 tonight, good thing the boiler is still running! 😆👍🍻
The more I see these in operation GP, the more I am impressed. I think the trick to these splitting those that Guy (and myself) have been concerned about is the thinness of the wedge. That minimal size allows knifing through like a razor blade. But I gotta tell you ....I am putting an eyeball on a set of 250 pound flywheels on an old antique stationary (hay) baler in the woods.... another home built splitter just may be in the works. LOL.
Hey good evening T! Now that is a set of videos I would enjoy seeing. Yup, I like this a lot - in large part not just because it is a much stronger and heavier build, but because it forces the need to put your two hands where they belong. You know me - very risk averse. LOL. Cheers and hope you are well!
That log tripod you used to cut is awesome, and I am sure I am showing my own naivety, but I don’t care. I always have trouble cutting longs with my chain getting caught, etc. And that splitter is ten times more efficient than others you’ve shown, or I’ve worked with. You could cut firewood for a living with those two items and save yourself hours. Fascinating and outstanding safety feature with the two hand operation. I may need to get both of those. Thanks for this one GP!
Good morning John! Thanks for the comments this morning. The LogOX has been a tremendous help to me. No more bending and lifting from the ground anymore and no more sending my chain into the ground or pinching it between rounds. Wish I had it a long time ago. I am enjoying the splitter - still want to use it some more to get a little more used to it, but it is fast, no question. Have a great weekend out there!
Great job you guys ! That splitter sure is cranking out the wood easily. Glad you all can get together safely and enjoy your working in the woods together. They are loosening up some down here but still have to be cautious. Some folks are having problems with the guidelines and always will till they have a problem or loose a loved one. Keep up the good work and videos and thanks for sharing with us. Fred.

I really like the height of your work table too. I'm 6'3" tall and this would suit me just fine. Most splitters i have to work stooped over and as you know that takes it's toll on the back. Thats really a nice splitter GP. Glad you didn't get rained out.👍👍👊

Man, that tractor, grapple, Big Tool Rack and splitter makes for a nice little combo for a productive day of splitting. I noticed a lot of smaller limbs in your log stack. Do you still work to cut those up for firewood? I've found as the more I automate our processes, the less likely I am to fiddle around with the little stuff like that for multiple reasons. I hate to waste the small stuff but sometimes feel it is a waste of energy to cut it all too. Just an observation is all. Thanks again for sharing and I appreciate your production level that goes into your videos.
Good morning Neil! Yes I still cut it up but you are right - it is a bit more work than vat's it worth it seems, sometimes. Thanks for watching and for the support. Have a great weekend Neil!
What comes to mind is the tortoise and the hair. Fast on the plunge but you lose time by not being able to control the round. I would say the your dual direction unit was faster as a result of better control of the rounds.

Hi GP, great video as always. Looks like you got a good sharpen on that Stihl, really throwing some good chips. Like others have said, too bad that knife wasn't and inch or two taller. See you on the next one!
Good morning Shane. Thanks for the good feedback. I will ask them if they considered a taller knife. Thanks for the feedback and yes , I always sharpen it before every use now. So much nicer to cut with a sharp chain. Thanks for tuning and for the great feedback. Cheers!
I’ve been studying the action of that kinetic splitter and there are some interesting physics happening. Another comment below from Gordy noted that the kinetic splitter might benefit from a taller wedge. I was initially thinking the same but I’m not sure that’s the issue. The wedge looks about the same height as on my Champion splitter. However, what’s different is that my splitter wedge - and most other convention splitters I’ve seen, has a slight undercut angle on the leading edge of the wedge that helps prevent the wood from climbing up off the wedge as it progresses through the block. That kinetic unit seems to have a vertical leading edge on the wedge, and you can see the block riding up on it as the ram pushes it through. Also, the kinetic has a much narrower wedge than most hydraulic splitters, so between it being narrow and the block riding up, you occasionally have to flip the block and hit it again to separate the halves. A conventional hydraulic one-way splitter travels slower but often splits the wood apart quicker, often with only a partial stroke, due to the wider wedge. A wide wedge on a kinetic splitter would likely cause frequent jams due to the higher force required to push it through. I’m suspect there would be conditions (wood size, type, dryness) where each type of splitter has its advantages. Either way, it’s always good to see demos of other equipment options and see you outdoors having a great day with Guy! Cheers!
I think you've hit the nail right on the head here, oh and one more little thing,..to hold the log a little more stable at the wedge, if they had a slight 'trough ' there to rest the log into as the spltter's ram comes forward.
Reg - good point! Most older conventional splitters have only the width of the beam to set the block on, but typically said beam has raised edges to keep the block stable. I obviously take that for granted but without it the blocks would fall off my Champion splitter without being held in place by hand (which I tend to do anyway with the slower ram). I have to admit that for the thousand bucks I paid TSC for my 20 ton Champion 6 years ago, it has worked perfectly and exceeded my expectations since day 1. As long as you run transmission fluid (rather than standard hydraulic oil) in them for easier winter operation, they work well in any Ontario weather conditions .... except blackfly season. It won’t start in blackfly season... cuz no one is there to pull the starter rope!!!
@@regsparkes6507 Prof Dave brought up a point that I forgot to point out on my junk yard dog. The top of my 14'' wedge leads the bottom by more than a half inch for the very reason the Professor put into words.
GP, while I'm no Mechanical engineer. But to me it looks that the splitting bar is a little short, 8" or more would help. And on the back side of the wedge could be wider, like an 1.5". Me & my cousin we're lucky to buy an 4 year old Eastonmade 9-16. It puts the old Champion 42 ton to shame. I'm not putting Kinetic splitters down, they have plenty of power in its thrust. It just needs a bar to match. Hope to soon see your solution to your storage building with your local zoning Commission.
Well now I’m really scratching my head.... My wife gave me a choice yesterday.... oil pump for the $200.00 truck, or wood splitter, tough choices... we will be needing both come winter time? I think the oil pump, this way I can drag home the log splitter later, and have a means of collecting more wood!
Always need to look at priorities, and after yesterday’s Mother’s Day yard clean up I think she understands now!, she’s just hesitant because it is a 25 year old truck, and it’s also a dodge!
Glad to see you’re finding a myriad many different ways stay busy. Perhaps it’s me, but it feels the chain on your saw could use a bit of sharpening. Be well. 😀
Good evening Sonnic! I am indeed and got to hang out with Guy for a bit. No, the chain was sharp but the operator wasn't. LOL. I was trying to push it through that dry maple too hard and fast and probably was bending the bar a bit sideways pushing it. All me this time. I have to learn to stop doing that. :)) Have a great weekend and talk again soon!
You know a funny thing about 'habits' is that other's notice them when the person who has it, ( habit) doesn't,.. I refer to his slapping his gloved hands together almost each and every time before he touches those splitter controls,..just watch! ( I'd say he go that from watch Mike Morgan too much LOL! ) That bit of teasing aside ( sorry Gord ) that is a nicely working splitter for sure.
LOL! I never noticed Reg. But I will have a watch. Maybe I'll start a new "thing" - everyone will be doing it. Thanks for tuning in. Keep warm this weekend!
Good day Don. No I don't think so, but will talk with them this week. Had some really heavy ones this past weekend and used the grapple to lift them up and place them on the table. Hope all is well - enjoy the weekend!
Good afternoon from New Hampshire! What type of grapple are you using? Loved your last video on the Oregon. Looks like it made quick work of most of the wood you fed it.
I'd like to see interchangeable wedges with the single being taller. And have an optional 4-way so you don't have to run the split logs thru again like with the single. Other than that, it's a great rig. Fast too... Cheers!
Good morning Tim! Great to hear from you. Not sure I mentioned to you but my daughter finally came home a while ago. Happy to have her home. Of course, she had to quarantine for 2 weeks but all good to have them all here. Hope you are doing well out there and keeping busy!
@@GPOutdoors That's great Gord, nice to have the family all together. I'll be glad when all this virus stuff is over with. It was 96.5F here yesterday and we could have some minor rain in the next day or so. More up in Marin county than the East Bay, but it is what it is. Was helping the County with weed abatement on the town trail last Thurs. Used my L2501 and Land Pride RCR1860 brush hog and they had their JD 6420 with an extendable arm with a large Woods flail mower attached. Was perfect for mowing the berms which are too steep for side-hill mowing. Nice rig... Hope you are having a nice, safe weekend and I'll chat with you next week. Cheers!
Hi G.P. is there anything you would like to see addressed on that kinetic splitter? And have you been able to give up using your pain relief meds since you have been using the log ox? Great video with all the new tools
Hey good morning Ronald. Great questions. Re: the LogOX - its now my new best friend (next to Guy- LOL). I have felt great every time now - I never have to bend and lift off the ground anymore and the more I use it, the easier it gets. No more limping off to the tractor at the end of the day - honest. I wish I had this OX long ago. And cutting off the ground is great. Hands down - very, very happy with it. Re: the splitter. I want to use it a few more times and try it out on some much bigger rounds, but so far, the only thing I wonder about is why the wedge is only 6" tall. I am going to ask my contact at Oregon because I think if the knife was a little taller, it would split more of those 10-12" rounds right through the first time without having to flip it over and re split. It's not bad having to flip them sometimes, but I think if the knife was taller, it would be more efficient. Also if the channel was slightly curved to allow the round to stay put, that would be good. But then again, most splitters I have used so far except one, didn't have a curved channel either. Other than that - I like the table height, love the safety feature, like the big receiving table. But I still want to try it on some big stuff to see how it does. Hope that helps! Thanks for the good questions today - enjoy the weekend!
Gord you're gonna wear through your gloves wiping your hands clean a hundred times a day. I know someone who lost four fingers wiping off a chopping block. Resist the urge to clean all the time and you will get done faster. Clean up once or twice a day then go at it. Good vid I like the slow piston of that kinetic splitter.
Morning LM! I can see they are very similar looking - but not sure they are identical. Also not sure if you are aware but this particular model was discontinued earlier this year - not sure if it was only a temporary stop in manufacturing due to the pandemic or permanently discontinued - something to consider if you were not aware. Cheers and good luck!
@@GPOutdoors my understanding is that the Oregon is a Speeco with the Oregon name plate. That’s good to know about the Oregon. I will be calling their HQ to find out. I’m not sure I want to buy a machine of which parts will no longer be available. Thanks for the heads up and reply.
@@GPOutdoors just spoke with a tech guy at corporate and he said the splitter was discontinued last month, November and when their distributors run out that’s it. Parts will be available for 5-7 years.
LOL. Good afternoon HR. I am actually loading it onto a trailer this afternoon to take to my brother's place. I would change my mind but I am pretty sure I wouldn't get invited to Thanksgiving dinner this year, if I did. LOL. Cheers and have a great weekend HR!
Thanks Ted! It was more user error this time - me. It was sharp but the wood was very dry and I was pushing it too hard through. I do that often, but I need to keep practicing to learn to allow the saw to go through on its own. The other habit I am trying to stop is that I often push with my left arm which bends the bar during the cut and stops the saw on me. Not sure why I keep doing it, but I try to focus on not doing it. Thanks for tuning in! Have a great weekend.
I would expect the power required all at once to get through the full height of something as tall as the wedge would be significantly more than what's required to do one side, flip it over, and do the other. Thus a taller wedge may make easy logs easier, but taller/tougher meat maybe impossible without increasing the power or swapping out for a smaller wedge.
Hey GP , how is the gas usage on this unit ? AND , could you cut some MAX length logs to split to show how well / or not it works. Oh and It really is time for a bigger saw. Cheers my Friend. Bee Safe !!!
LOL. Good morning Bubba. You bet. I am going to keep an eye out for a bigger diameter piece and will cut some 24" lengths too. We don't have a lot of big stuff but I will source some out. Had some huge stuff in that big log pile but it was bass wood and that stuff splits super easy. I would like to find some maple or ash ideally. Thanks - hope you are doing well!
Morning HW! It is called a Mingo Marker. It is made in Montana. We have ben using one for years - great, simple tool for marking accurate lengths. They have a website of the same name and can be ordered directly from them - if you live in Canada, I sell them on my website ( gp outdoors dot ca). Cheers and thanks for watching.
Morning Sherpa - thanks for the heads up. I just several of them this week and just checked and it is there, in the online store. It is not an amazon link - I sell them directly. But thanks again - all good on the site this morning. Cheers!
GP, is this splitter a rebranded version of another kinetic splitter? It looks to be nearly identical. I had to laugh at the background, no work lot is complete without a section of drainage pipe, a tattered tarp and an empty boat trailer, they are ubiquitous.
LOL TGC! Hey, I promised Carol I would clean it up...I just haven't got to it yet. :)) NO I don;t think so. Oregon is been around since 1947, as you probably know so I am sure the design would have been theirs. But I have seen a couple of similar looking units too. Hope you are keeping busy out there Justin. Take care my friend!
Good morning Jim. I have 3 of them already but they are my daughter's dogs. I don't think I could take another one. LOL. Yes i do - every morning before I use the saw. I use a 2 in 1 STIHL sharpener. Best thing since sliced bread. I will try to include it in a video soon - I have shown a few shots of it in past videos but have not shown the full sharpen. Cheers!

Cheers!
I think you've hit the nail right on the head here, oh and one more little thing,..to hold the log a little more stable at the wedge, if they had a slight 'trough ' there to rest the log
into as the spltter's ram comes forward.
Morning Guys. Some great observations and suggestions. I will pass on your thoughts to Oregon. Thanks guys!
@@profdave2861 Oh gawd,..now I feel those little buggers and I'll have to hibernate,...again! LOL
Good morning Howard. Thanks for the views this morning. Eastonmade make good splitters for sure. Some good suggestions I think. Thanks again!
LOL! That makes good sense. Cheers Pat!
I refer to his slapping his gloved hands together almost each and
every time before he touches those splitter controls,..just watch! ( I'd say he go that from watch Mike Morgan too much LOL! )
That bit of teasing aside ( sorry Gord ) that is a nicely working splitter for sure.
LOL! I never noticed Reg. But I will have a watch. Maybe I'll start a new "thing" - everyone will be doing it. Thanks for tuning in. Keep warm this weekend!
@@GPOutdoors Yes, I did think that maybe you are a 'trend setter' on RUclips!! You may be on to something here too.
Do they have a taller cutting anvil for that splitter? If the logs were large dia. and heavy, no hydraulic assist for lifting. It s nice.
Good day Don. No I don't think so, but will talk with them this week. Had some really heavy ones this past weekend and used the grapple to lift them up and place them on the table. Hope all is well - enjoy the weekend!
Great video
Good afternoon from New Hampshire! What type of grapple are you using? Loved your last video on the Oregon. Looks like it made quick work of most of the wood you fed it.
I understand the safety feature of the two hands on the controls but I would disable the bottom button.
Thanks Mike! Have a good one!
Who makes your galvanized utility trailer in the video? What are the dimensions of the trailer?
Morning Craig. It belonged to a neighbour down the road. I didn't see the name on it but i think it was 5 by 10, I believe. Sorry about that. Cheers!
Cheers!
Gord for someone who doesn’t heat with wood you sure do cut a lot. I may need you to come to my place for a while I’ll buy the gas. Take care brother
Well, thank you do kindly for the invite Ben! If only you didn't live so far away. :)) Hope you are keeping well. Cheers!
Hi G.P. is there anything you would like to see addressed on that kinetic splitter?
LOL. Good point Mike. I don't really think about it, I just tend to do it but true - there is no need to do it so often. Thanks and have a great week!
I’m buying one this coming week. It’s my understanding, the Speeco is an identical machine?
@@GPOutdoors have decided against buying the Oregon and going with a Super Split J model.
Gord, I want your tired old two-way wood splitter. How much to ship it to New Hampshire?
LOL. Good afternoon HR. I am actually loading it onto a trailer this afternoon to take to my brother's place. I would change my mind but I am pretty sure I wouldn't get invited to Thanksgiving dinner this year, if I did. LOL. Cheers and have a great weekend HR!
Your saw seems to need sharpening , the chips are small and the saw is laboring more than it should
Good Morning Gord, what are you going to test next... a screw splitter?
LOL. No sir. You will see it in about 10 minutes...:)
GP Outdoors well that might be the case, but I’m off to work! Going to roll around in poison Ivy for a bit!
LOL!
GP Outdoors got to keep it off the school grounds as much as possible!
Need a taller iron spliter on the end.
Thanks Gordy! I think that would be a benefit. Cheers!
@@PhilHilton That sounds like a good reason .
Interesting - thanks Phil!
What is the tool that you are using to measure the length of logs you want to cut?
GP Outdoors You may want to check your web site store and amazon links, does not appear there.
Morning Sherpa - thanks for the heads up. I just several of them this week and just checked and it is there, in the online store. It is not an amazon link - I sell them directly. But thanks again - all good on the site this morning. Cheers!
@@GPOutdoors See it from my Chrome browser on the notebook but not Safari on my iPad. Thanks.
GP, still need to get a dog. However I was wondering if you sharpen your own chainsaw chains? If so, it would be nice to see video on How To.
Cheers!
Did you hit an iceberg on the way home?
LOL! Just about - I made it part way down the driveway before it started falling. We are in for some snow tomorrow so I will be pulling the winter coat back out of the closet. Cheers and stay warm!
@@GPOutdoors So the S.O.S. flash was justified.
...👍
Cheers BB!
I don't think i could ever come to like that safety thing you have to mash every time you pull the split lever. I don't think i would ever buy that splitter. Too many others that suit me better on the market.
Good morning Bob. Thanks for the comment - definitely takes some getting used to. Thanks for tuning in and sharing your thoughts on it. Have a great weekend!
