At the time of his visit to Messingham he was already 69. Incredible energy! Rector is a historical term, and today vicar and rector are basically the same thing as you stated.
He was certainly dedicated that's for sure! I thought rector and vicar were pretty much the same. That makes sense in another way too - generally when I find old rectories they tend to be older buildings than vicarages. Stands to reason now
