The Village Idiot
Великобритания
Добавлен 19 дек 2015
Hello.
My name is Andy. I am armed with a car, a GoPro and an unhealthy amount of time on my hands. My ambition is to visit every civil parish in England.
There are about 11,000 of them, give or take a few hundred. The number keeps changing.as parishes are created or abolished.
I live in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, so many of my early videos will be local, but eventually I aim to go much much further afield, so please subscribe if you're new here!
I occasionally upload something that's unrelated. For example, check out my Musical Idiot playlists for all my music related content!
I have a me a Facebook page too!

HARROGATE PARISH #50: BOROUGHBRIDGE
Boroughbridge - “Fort Bridge”
Next up in the Harrogate series we have Boroughbridge - the small town that we’ve been talking so much about over the past few episodes. Take everything you already know about the town from those videos and keep it handy in your mind, because at various points throughout this video we will be referencing some bits.
Borougbridge was an important staging post on the Great North Road. Although it’s the main settlement with the parish of the same name, Boroughbridge’s historical importance is second to the village just East of the town. That would be Aldborough - a principal settlement during the Roman period, once known as Isuri...

HARROGATE PARISH #49 OF 139: ELLENTHORPE Ellenthorpe - “Atheling’s Farm” Ok everyone, here’s one that’s going to be a challenge. This is Ellenthorpe, which is located on the Northern bank of the River Ure. It’s a challenge because there’s really nothing to film out here. The parish has just one public road - and this is it. Even then, it’s a dead end, because it runs into two farm tracks which ...

RUSHCLIFFE PARISH #40: CROPWELL BISHOP Cropwell Bishop - “Archbishop’s land near a Rounded Hill” This week in Rushcliffe we’re taking a look at the other of the two Cropwell villages. Last week it was all about churches, chapels, schools and former allotments - this week, we’ve got a whole lot more. Now as we known from previous adventures in the East Midlands, Stilton Cheese can only be produc...

BOSTON PARISH #5: BUTTERWICK Butterwick - “Butter Farm” Alright folks, the last of this current run out here in Boston sees us take on the village of Butterwick, the first so far we’ve covered that’s not on the A52. Well, at least not directly. Butterwick sits just to the south of that major road, part way between Benington to the Northeast and Frieston to the Southwest. With a layout that’s mu...

NORTH KESTEVEN PARISH #44: HECKINGTON Heckington - “Heca’s Farm” In North Kesteven so far, it’s fair to say we’ve already come across some fabulous bits of industrial heritage, but this week in the district, we come to one that’s world famous. This is the village in which the only fully working 8 sailed windmill in the world can be found. This is Heckington. The windmill, which originally had f...

EAST LINDSEY PARISH #43: STICKNEY Stickney - “Stick Island” We continue North deeper into East Lindsey this week, and up the A16 towards Spilsby. On it route, it passes through the linear village of Stickney, and like Sibsey, its neighbour to the South, its name refers to an ancient island. Several centuries ago, this area was a great big marsh, but there were patches of higher ground that prot...

BOSTON PARISH #4: BENINGTON Benington - “Beonna’s Farm” Hello again Boston! This week we continue to come down the A52 into the town, and in doing so we pass through the lovely little village of Benington. Located on a bend in the A52, this village takes its name from an 8th century East Anglian king - “Benna” or “Beonna”. He wass notable for being the first East Anglian king whose coinage incl...

EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #170 of 171: WOODMANSEY Woodmansey - “Woodmans’ Lake” With just two to go in the East Riding, the finish line for the county is in sight. In this episode we’re taking on the penultimate piece of land I’ve yet to set foot into, and it’s a very complicated one. This is Woodmansey, and as the name suggests, there is a village of the same name here. Really though thi...

HARROGATE PARISH #48 OF 139: MILBY Milby - “Mildi’s Farm” Hello again Harrogatonians, here’s another village in your part of Yorkshire. This week we’re back in the vicinity of Boroughbridge - in fact this place borders that town. A few months ago now, we had a look at Langthorpe, and you may recall in that one we met a weir on the River Ure, close to a pub called The Grantham Arms. Langthorpe c...

RUSHCLIFFE PARISH #39: CROPWELL BUTLER Cropwell Butler - “Butler’s Land near a Rounded Hill” Hello again folks, and welcome to the first of a pair of twins. We’re used to the idea by now of two villages sharing the same name. There’s usually a theme that links them together - and here in the Cropwell’s that’s certainly the case. Cropwell means rounded hill - and between the two Cropwell village...

Aldborough used to be lovely. On the edge of the village green, it had a post office in one half of a Georgian house. Run by Mrs Mudd, her family made butter, in the past, and won awards for their butter flowers. See the Nidderdale museum for photos.
Aldborough still IS lovely isn't it?
Hi Andy, i would've met up too. i finally got to Malton last month , was not disappointed!
Watching.
Great to see my old home town. Interesting to see the apparent correct name for the passage ways. The one from Lairgate to Town being Briggs’ passage, due to ( now gone) Briggs and Powell TV and electricals shop and the passage down the side of what was Woolworths as Woolies passage. Yes it was a sad time once Tescos got the go ahead, Beverley changed radically from that point, losing our cattle market, although changed started with the building of model farm. Great series of Videos, always enjoy pointing out “ I ve been there !” .
And this one!
Interesting video well put together 👍
Interesting video. Worth a mention is the Friary which is now a youth hostel...an important historical building in Beverley en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beverley_Friary
I was brought up in a village (one you have covered of course! 🙂) near Beverley and was told that the name came from "Beaver" and "Lake": "Beaverlack".
Not according to the University of Nottingham's Key to English Placenames. Thats what I use for all episodes. Ley is an odd suffix though. Generally means clearing but stream and lake can also appear from time to time
Well done fantastic
I must revisit Beverley 🤩 I don’t remember any of the town from my trip there about 40 years ago 🥹 Thanks for opening my eyes Andy and showing me what to look for! 😃
This is amazing!! I looked to see if you'd done one on Beverley yesterday. Wow!! Excited to watch it. You said the word ' tenfoot'. I think that word is just local to Hull. It's an alley way which runs behind houses, which often provide garages for the residents. Thank you.😊
Nah, it's more widespread than just Hull. Barnsley folk use it too for definite
hi you should come back to aldbrough on saturday 7th of december aldbrough are have a xmas street fair out side of St Bartholomew Church 4:30pm-7pm
Brilliant, well done!. first discovered these videos after the inlaws saw you filming your Etton episode, watched ever since!
A fantastic achievement to visit all 171 parishes in the county that i live in. Have still got quite a lot of the early ones to watch as i didn't start watching the series until the Kirkburn episode. Beverley is a great place to visit with its shopping, markets, two great churches (St Mary's & Minster) and the Westwood with its racecourse, golf course & Black Mill.
One of my favourite places. Thanks for a very interesting and comprehensive look around. Sad to see the last of East Yorkshire , but many more fascinating places to visit.
Wow another County accounted for! Well done mate.
I'm the same, I love cheese, but Stilton's a step too far! 😄
East Yorkshires poshest town Beverley hope they made you both welcome Andy.
I'm just curious regarding you day job, if I'm not asking too personally a question?
No it's not too personal. Evri courier, but the sooner I get out of it, the better!
@@TheVillageIdiot Bless you. I've kept one of you employed during the last few weeks from my spending spree on Ebay. Have you thought of trying to combine your skills of presenting, historical/local knowledge and filming skills and contacting local radio stations or BBC local news or ITV or Notts TV and seeing if you could maybe get some exposure there? I think that you'd soon get some experience, maybe having to do a bit of volunteering, buy you're still reasonably young and you never know what might come of it. Best of luck chuck and you have to start somewhere. Like George Benson sang about 'Never Give Up On A Good Thing, Remember What Makes You Happy!
Enjoyed this one Andy. Many thanks.
Well done keep going
Another very interesting history you researched. Well done. Many thanks.
Hi Andy, I have family who live in Ollerton. I moved away during the pit strike back in 1984. We still visit but not as offtern as I would like. My Parent's got married at the church in the circle in December 1963 but sadly no longer with us now. I went to the Whinney lane infants school and then onto Dukeried Comprehensive. Which had a farm and tennis courts and a athletics track and about 4 football pitches and the indoorswimming pool . Back then I didn't relied how lucky we we're to have these faculties. My Grand parents lived on Oak Avenue which was 2 minute walk from the high street.
Always feel great watching your videos. I like it the way it explains the area and the importance of the place. Thanks
It's truly amazing what you find out about this village. Very interesting. Many thanks.
In watching.
What a horrendous day to be travelling. Hope you got to your destination safe.
I did
Great video, we used to live in Sibsey so familiar with all the places in your video. I know you can't include all locations in a village but there's a lane called 'Goosemuck Lane' (off Littlemoors) which once had some press coverage for being one of the worst street names in England. It was where geese were herded/held before going to the Nottingham Goose Fair. Thanks for the tour, it brought back some fond memories.
Watching.
In Preston you didn't give a mention of one of the main roads especially Addison and watkinson close you only mentioned manor park
You live on one of them I assume. Dead ends. Not helpful route wise.
Walled garden? No coverage of this?
Private property? Heard of that?
Subscribed. Thanks for the video around butterwick. Ashame the weather didnt play ball as it doesnt look bland normally! Proud to have lived here for the past 5 years even tho ive been coming here for the last 28 years. Lovely little community, voluntry litter pickers on a sunday, really nice pub food at the 5 bells, new chippy owner and the shop has almost everything 😊
I am not an ethical vegan but people need to know & acknowledge their responsibility for this way of eating/food production.
bloody hell that's awful i enjoyed the other parts after that though
My Father's grandparents came to Canada from Wrawby and Brigg. Wonderful to see it! Thanks!
Really upsetting... Cant believe those standards are acceptable. Disgusting
Totally agree the hatchery is awful. Cruel 😢
You scratched that graveyard itch for me. Dig stories like that of Cholera graves. Thanks
Such great weather for you on this section.
Bit a bland place that for you. Well done for keeping going in the rain Andy.
At this point, the rain is my best friend
Horrible .
Hopefully the rest was OK!
@@TheVillageIdiot yes enjoyed the rest ,but the chicks was pu setting.
Late again but watching
You weren't wrong about that part being upsetting....awful.
It's another great walk along the cliff at Whitton.
