Wardlow - “Watch Hill”
Now one thing which we've become accustomed to by now in the Derbyshire Dales would be the number of awesome folklore tales connected with it. Here in Wardlow, a small village just to the East of Litton, there are at least three to speak of. One of them centres around a cat, but it's not the sort you might be thinking of that's for sure. Wardlow was historically, a place associated with death, and the horrific practice of gibbeting - the public display of a body after an execution.
Peter's Rock, which we covered last time out in Litton, was where Wardlow's criminals were gibbeted for all to see. Unfortunate souls to suffer the fate there include the notorious highwayman Black Harry, and Anthony Lingard, who was convicted of murdering a tollkeeper. Pretty grim stuff all in all. That said, Wardlow, on the face of it, doesn’t look like the kind of village that would have such a murky, dark past. Far from it actually.
Farming is the main economic activity out here. You will see plenty of tractors up and down the main street, tending to the fields in this relatively flat part of the Dales. Tourism also plays a part here. With easy access to the Monsal Trail, camping is a popular activity in Wardlow, and if you find yourself passing through via the A623, you can even sample the wonderful Yondermann Café, like I did.
