Using StaffPad on MS Surface, Workflow for Writing Music Notation

- Quick demo of StaffPad on the Surface Pro 3 (software as of June 2015) and how I use it. It's a super quick process to get notation into the computer and print it, unlike the programs of old. Many of the notation features and symbols are beyond my needs. For me, it's useful for transcribing instrument parts and creating lead sheets to play live.
Best thing is how the app provides different functions for finger, as for the pen. For instance, pen-click into a measure, and you're entering notes. Or, finger-tap and you access a context menu.
Copy and paste measures also, that's something I finally figured out. Also, I show how to print to pdfs, for viewing on the Surface. - Видеоклипы
Thanks I didnt know how to add bars until this video.
Grazie Brian! 🙏
4:36 yes, I believe you can back them up to another drive. You dont wanna lose any project.
Vahagn, I show the print options at about 2:58. You can either print directly from StaffPad, or create a PDF to print separately. Swipe in from the right, and tap "Devices," then you get a Print option. From there you can choose the XPS option to create a pdf. Or, if you have a printer online, it will appear in the list as well. My only wish would be to control the scale of printing. Notation seems a bit small for my eyes.
Thanks a lot Brian . As a matter of fact i found a very annoying fact , that the Trill's are not playable for the horn section. It is playable only for strings. And also you can't print any horn parts that have the trill's mark above a not. You can print the full score , but can't print the horns that have trill sign. That drive's me crazy last night. Imagine i have this big score with the Big Band + strings just finished and can't print the horns. No trumpets, sax, trombones. So i start erasing some marks like dynamics and things like that. So finally got it!!!! I hope they can fix that.but Over All its Magic , dream come trough. Thanks to Creators. Developers and everyone that make's Staffpad.
And thanks you Brian for shearing your experience. Actually it does Crash a lot recently. (((
Hey, Vahagn, I have a Canon laser printer. Black and white only, but I think a laser would give a cleaner edge especially for sheet music, compared to inkjet printers.
I can not write "FLAM DRUMS" on the Staffpad. Could you help me?
Hey Brian ! What kind of printer will you recomend?
Thanks
Thanks a lot Brian. I just got a Cannon as well. Its Great. But how can you print PDF? Does Staffpad prints PDF?
Thanks . I really enjoy your video. And the MAGIC STAFFPAD.
By The way i like the idea with the glows. Very hrlpfull.
How do you add or delete a measure? Oh, it's double tap with your finger and the option shows up.
Hi Brian, do you know if Staffpad can create your own template? Thanks
there is the score for the Drum?
How many languages can Staffpad write lyrics?
Does this notation stuff iPad also exist for 'drums'?
+Danny Manzo Hey, Danny, yes I looked today. StaffPad has built-in percussion instruments. Full drum kit and lots of individual instruments. This is for Windows Surface. I have no idea about iPad apps.
Works in ipad? :O
Does Staffpad have midi input as well?
No. It's designed exclusively for the pen input. It apparently supports MIDI/MusicXML import/export, so you could jump between Staffpad and another program that supports midi import. blog.staffpad.net/looking-through-windows/
Could you please explain the step HOW to make a PDF file? I see your StaffPad offers the same export options as mine (.spf, .xml., .wav etc.) but no PDF and suddenly you are showing existing PDF files. Please, I have finished music I want to print but I do not know what should I do now. Thanks a lot for help
+Veronika Tvrdá Hey Veronika. What you use to create the printable sheet music is the Microsoft XPS Document Writer. So swipe in from the right, select Devices, then Print. Then you have that option for MS XPS Document Writer. Hit Save, and it should save to the Documents folder.I realize now it's technically an OXPS file, not a PDF. But you can print it from the Windows machine just the same. The files will open in Reader app. I'm sure there is a way to convert OXPS into a PDF if you needed to send to another computer. As Apple computers likely do not support OXPS files.
+Brian Wagner Thank you so much for such a quick answer! - edit - I got it! Right panel, "Devices" and "Print", that's it! Thank you!
Wow, it seems really slow going. Is it worth the trouble?
Hey Jim. It moves much faster when you get used to it. Depends on your style and needs. I've seen apps using midi keyboard entry that are great. But never worked for me!
It's possible use another capacitive pen on this app?
+Thiago Joseph Hey, Thiago, I haven't seen anyone use a different pen with the SP3. My understanding was that it's pretty specific to the device. This is NTrig, not Wacom like the first Surface Pro. Do you have a different kind of pen that you like using with other devices?
Brian Wagner I would use a Stilus, capacitive without any button function
I'm not familiar with that device. But you definitely need a button. Hold the button and draw to erase notes. *****
Brian Wagner Aaah ok got it! I though there was a icon to an alternative way to erase. Thank you :)
+Thiago Joseph You can always display that erase icon if you don't wish to use a button. You will find it in App Settings
Does it work on iPad?
Windows 10 only
