Writing more music with StaffPad

- Using StaffPad to write a few bars of Billy Joel's "Vienna", including two-voice music, triplets, slurs, grace notes, duplicating music, using the eraser, and the expression layer.
The device used in the video is a Surface Pro 3 with an Intel Core i5 Processor, 128 GB of storage and 4GB of RAM. It was provided by Microsoft. All opinions and content are solely those of the author.
This is genius I love it! I've recorded midi but I always depended on the editing tools. This is so much easier, imagine if Beethoven had this!!
I'm a composer and I bought this app for my SP3. The concept is brilliant, but unfortunately my music handwriting, although very fast, tends to be too messy for StaffPad, resulting in a very high rate of errors. If I have to slow down and draw as the program wants me to, then I might as well use the Sibelius step entry and input notes at about the same speed. I'm 100% sure most professional composers have the same problem (except for Hans Zimmer and those 5-6 who make gazillions of $$$ and have an army of slaves who work for them... ;) )
I'm hoping future versions will be more capable of dealing with the "fast & messy" way we composers handwrite. For now, this is nothing more than a toy and I can't really use it for work.
Paolo Pizzi Make sure you give your feedback directly to the developers.
+Paolo Pizzi "except for Hans Zimmer and those 5-6 who make gazillions of $$$ and have an army of slaves who work for them" LoL
enlarge the page and i think all will be right
Hey Guys I highly recommend SURFACE PRO 3 with I 5 proc. For Staffpad.
Many thanks, Philip, for sharing this. Much appreciated!
Does anyone know the function of 1 2 3 4 in the upper left corner? Thank you
Just found it's for voices or stacked notes, like in hymn books with two clefs and 4 voices. 1 is the topmost note, usually soprano, 2 alto, etc.
I was editing a musicXML import of The Last Mile of the Way, and couldn't find how to grab the 2nd voice till now :)
Hi there! thank you so much for the video. i wanted to ask if it is possible to do Cross-staff notation? Like when writing for piano, bringing the left hand notes into the upper stave?
Would I have to change my writing style for it to ever recognize my writing for what it is? E.g., to write a half note I make the circle then the stem all in one stroke. Similarly, when making a quarter note I start with my pencil tip at the center of the note head then spiral out, which effectively fills in the head, then I continue the same motion to make the stem. In both ways I make the head and stem all in one stroke. To beam four eighth notes I make four quarter notes then when I make the last stem I continue in one motion to beam the preceding notes. This makes for some curvy lines, like Bach’s handwriting, which I copied when I was young. Or would StaffPad eventually learn what this means?
Great showing.
This was very helpful, thank you!
Thank you for this.
Hi, thank you for the time you spent on this video, that's great. I have a question: i've purchased a Surface 4 pro, I'm trying to get started with staffpad. How Can i change the tempo (bmp setting... moderato, allegreo etc..) in the palyback?
I just purchased the app on my Ipad and bought a new Apple Pencil. How can write notation like string slap with Thumb (T), pop (P), Hammer (H), pull-off(PO), slide string (S) and also slide off (S with an unattached tie) for Electric Bass scoring?
Hi! Please can you tell me parameters of your iPad? My budget is not that great and I'm in a decision whether to buy 12.9" with 8 Gb memory or just 11" with 16 Gb
it's really hard to write for two or three voices at the same time, I'm a guitar player and a composer. I've been trying to change stem's directions but it's really hard.
hi guys, I see a lot of musicians here so I’m thinking this might be a good place to ask, does anybody know a good app for IOS that can import and play scores like sibelius does? I am a beginner violinist and sometimes is hard to get used to a new score and for me it helps a lot to hear it before I play it. I know it’s probably not ideal to read scores like that , but still! thanks!
Hi everyone !!! who knows , if i can e mail separate parts to the musicians and the full score to the conductor? those it supports PDF File
thank you so much:) Peace
I would love to see an IOS version of this!
Symphony Pro, or Notion 6
How much space do the libraries typically take up on iPad? Just ordered a 64Gb iPad Pro but trying to figure out if I should size up.
This is covered more in detail in the review: www.scoringnotes.com/reviews/staffpad-for-ipad/
Hi there :) Can this be used as a platform for conducting score ? Cause I find turning pages while conducting is a pain. A digital sheet for conductors would be so nice ! :)
It's a pity they didn't developed a version for Android tablets
I wish I was advanced enough to use this. I definitely could have fun with it but that price tag is meant for people who can use the program to its fullest.
Does it works well in surface 3 ? (2GB model) I'm really wonder if 2GB ram is enough for this program.
Yeah I’m getting this
Great!!
Odjazd! Ciekawe czy tak się łatwo obsługuje jak w demo ??!!!
You have an excellent video. Two things: one you didn’t show how to put the lyrics in Which I was able to find somewhere else…and second I’m not sure if you have Observed that many many reviews speak about this app crashing. Many people are losing their data.
I just bought a 2 in 1(laptop-tablet) so it has a touch screen... can I use staffpad on it or does it really have to be a surface pro??
+Diego A. Ynga (Dajyf) Seriously, return your new computer and get a Surface. You will not regret it.
how well does this work for drumline and field show battery
Quick question, how does it handle drum set scores? Thanks.
Which surface pro 3 are you using? Is it I5 model?
Is this free in apple appstore? or do I have to pay for the staffpad app? :)
What is it like for left handers? Does this interfere with the touch screen (you might rest your hand on the screen a bit more)
+Tom Armstrong If you use a Surface tablet with Surface pen you won't have an issue. The pen communicates directly with the computer (unlike a stylus which relies on touch) and so it rejects (ignores) your palm completely.
+Shayna Pulley Really useful, thanks.
Tom Armstrong yup! Go to Best Buy and try one out- you'll likely hand over your credit card after the first 5 minutes :)
Can one import in a print score by snapping a photo of it?
donde consigo el programa de escritura
Recently I bought this software, downloaded in acer galaxie laptop, please let me know , how transfer it to my tablet galaxie s2.
Thanks.
Is it possible to erase the pauses before the very first 3 notes?
Can’t drag notes up or down?
it is amazing how people confuse composing with engraving. Most of the apps are good for engraving, and terrible for composition
Why?
Does staffpad break copyright law?
Hi this staffpad can write pop drums parts?
This video just cost me $60 bucks.
How do I insert a compass?
Any comments on the new Avid Sibelius Annotate?
Ronny Philip I would like to know that too.
Ronny Philip It's not officially released yet so too early to say how it actually works. Once it's available I'll surely post about it on the blog!
En Français c'est possible
Can I use staffpad on a Surface Pro 2 ???
+Dragosch Rex Yes.
"Doesn't support voices"
Tap and hold" ... (nothing happens)
(A time signature appears and you can't create time signatures)
"Doesn't support pick up bar"
"Doesn't support parenthetical notes"
How can they sell something like this? :/
This was the demo version. Both voices and pickup bars are now supported.
Does StaffPad support Apple tablets?
Kathy Collins, you need Surface pro 3 (windows tablet)
Gilberto de Queiroz Or any other Windows slate (or laptop) with an active digitizer (stylus.) I think this app also requires some computing muscle, so I'm not sure anything less than an i3 would be able to give you acceptable results.
Is that the surface 3 or surface pro 3?
Eben Fernando Heldreth It's the Surface Pro 3.
surface pro4
+Wilfred Mziray Not in this video. This video is too old for the Surface Pro 4.
+pbilk1 He probably got an early prototype to test staffpad.
Michael Buck No way, this video is posted way too early, the thing would still be in production and NYC Music Services says it's a Surface Pro 3 themselves.
is it free to use??
Mignonne Jona No you have to buy it. Its $70.
8:37 no u
Ties in staff pad suck
much faster with keyboard, way faster.. would never ever by this
but this is cheaper and less space consuming :)
i agree. I have such apps, but still use logic pro for everything. There is no point in being limited nowadays
@@emanuel_soundtrack im sorry but things have changed and i now use it, for special things this is very good, but for tweaking film music and ballads i mostly use logic
Dorico is getting more "daw" like. And Symphony Pro is what most envolved so far i know, they updating all the time, and some features are ahead of the competitors. Anyway at the moment i can trust only Logic for serious work, and the pain of their score editor is still worthwhile!
sorry, but this program is still a pain. the concept is good but not worth it for android.
that's not on android.
