Good insights. Note entry can be tempramental in StaffPad.

helpful. didn't realize that erasing is done by rubbing and not stabbing. thanks

I have a tip for the readers. Don't write 'p' because it's very hard for staffpad to recognize it. Write "mf" instead then drag it downward to make it 'p' or any other dynamic symbol. "mf" or "f" are the easiest symbol staffpad can recognize. I hope this will make your production even more productive.

You can also put the eraser in the tool bar and set it up to double tap on your pencil (iPad & Apple Pencil users) to erase. Not a fan of the pressure erase.

Thanks for this - I picked up some hints that I'll apply in what is now my second attempt to make peace with StaffPad. My handwriting is terrible and my ability to draw is nonexistent, so that's not helping for sure. Sometimes I can't read my own handwritten paper scores, so I have a lot of sympathy for StaffPad! (Yes, I get the irony ha.)
One change I wish they would consider would be a more forgiving "preliminary guess" mode in which the engine gives its best guess when faced with ambiguity but at least produces *something* rather than staring back at you blankly. For instance, it's faster to adjust one note that got rendered at the wrong pitch than to be forced to delete everything in the measure and start over. As in, if it can't tell whether the note head is supposed to be on a line or in a space, at least put something there so I can quickly slide the note up and down. Maybe render it in a special color that indicates a threshold of uncertainty. Similarly, if there's something that is vaguely close to a vertical line with a blob above it or below it, there's a 99% chance that it's supposed to be a stemmed note. Just give me a note and let me adjust if needed.
Or maybe a "learning" mode where it highlights which part of an input string it can't process so I get some idea of how to improve my technique. Is it beaming, note head size, angles, etc.? What am I doing wrong?
That said, I'm sure the recognition process is a lot more complicated than I appreciate, so maybe it's near peak proficiency already.
I like the app and the concept a lot (the audio playback even with the stock sounds is shockingly good), but I hope either the app gets more forgiving or my clumsy hand gets more accurate. I'll keep at it...
    Cheers -

Geez handwriting those dynamics like the small p took you 10 attempts and you are an experienced Staffpad user! Though I am liking handwriting recognition for the fun factor, as a newbie I am finding the 2 hand, left hand on computer keyboard and write hand on mouse-trackpad, to be the fastest 2 hand method to get the job done for notation input.

    • @scoringbits
      @scoringbits  2 года назад

I agree with you Downpat, dynamics are the most unrecognizable for StaffPad. I usually write a p then hold and swipe up or down for the dynamic I need.
I have to say I’ve increasingly improved with my writing or the other way around StaffPad has improved. And it’s much better than before. I do love the program more with each use, it’s exceptionally good.

    • @billpeet1976

Staffpad recognizes an "f" forte symbol the most easily. So whatever dynamic I want, I always write an 'f' and then you can change the dynamic by swiping up or down. Yes it's a workaround, but I've gotten very quick in doing it.

Thank you. The dot was annoying me but I find keeping the pencil steady on the glass is awkward so enlarging helps. 3 finger trick?? One issue I have not found an answer to is I missed a note in bar 3 and did not notice until a page or 2 later - how on earth do you insert a note because it means every bar from then on has to be shunted. Inserting a measure if easy a single note not so

@@scoringbits Hi I am delighted to say the StaffPad responded promptly and included a video of my exact issue that they had reproduced confirming that it was not obvious. I was writing up an exercise by Pianote ruclips.net/video/aD47CHWgdh8/видео.html It is a left hand arpeggio with a broken chord right hand corresponding to the arpeggio notes so D arpeggio D F# A progressing to Bm arpeggio B D F# etc. in bar3 I had skipped from D/A to Bm missing out the D/F# thus everything to the end required a one note shift to the next bar. It is a complex Lasso of a large set of bars.

@@petermcmurray2807 I’ve not tried inserting one note in the middle of a section sounds complicated hopefully there was a simple work around. Perhaps move all the bars after and then work on the one or two bars in question

For repeats touch the bar line then switch it to a repeat. I don’t think StaffPad performs repeats but I might be wrong.

Hello, thanks for the video! This looks so bad. Almost everything you write needs at least 3 to 5 tries to get the correct notation. And also many corrections after the fact. This is far from usable, at least not for serious work. It would drive me insane! LOL They need to add more input methods like MIDI ASAP.

    • @scoringbits

Thank you Clarence fair point. Symphony Pro is much better in that area. I’m about to launch an updated tips video. I’ve come up with tips that have improved my relationship with the app recognizing my handwriting. I agree it is an issue but you can learn your way into StaffPads mind

It helps if the tablet/iPad is stable and not rocking around like in this example - I also use a Pencil Tip (Pen Tip) which helps with grip. Where it comes in to its own is the ability to erase easily and move notes quickly.

    • @billpeet1976

Yeah, this video really does a disservice to Staffpad. Frankly, the user here is EXTREMELY sloppy. You do have to learn what the app is looking for, but once you do, it becomes very quick and reliable to enter things in. I now rarely have a problem with recognition.

Really? I use it for serious work all the time, writing wind symphony and orchestra scores - as well as jazz lead sheets (I teach bass at a arts college in Asia, I'm also a conductor for wind symphony and compose my own works on occasion). That being said , you should check out the latest update (Sept. 2023) - it's free (as are all updates), StaffPad now has MIDI capture (plug in a MIDI keyboard via USB or Bluetooth), as well as live piano capture using the internal mic. I use MIDI capture along with pen entry these days, it's the best of both worlds!
