This abomination having 83% critic score is the exact reason why people don't even bother reading critic reviews anymore
A result of those previous acts! RT used to do this with captain marvel and several shitty star wars movies
The shills of critic rankings are unreal - and now it's based on politics, not just hyping a movie just to hype it.

@@lukewarmape603 you mean the ones puting this show as 10. i agree
@@frosty848 Sure. All disingenuous reviews should be banned. I have a feeling that would raise the score though, not lower it.

Good one!😂
If they remove audience scores from Rotten Tomatoes, there'd be no reason to check the website anymore.
There is no reason to check it now either. All I need to know is on youtube.
I don't think people see movies anymore. They see woke stuff in all of them. It just caused people to watch old movies in thier collection rather tham watch new stuff.

There are 10 more examples. Disney always has shady shit happening with their reviews when it's a bad product.

Now? This been going on for like a decade. People still flauk to the site for validation one way or the other... weird IMHO
"the critics exist to serve the audience"
"the audience is the reason the critics exist, the critics are not the reason the audience exists"
There's a major flaw in this line of reasoning in the context of review bombing situations. The problem with review bombing is that you aren't getting legitimate opinions of people who have watched the show. A lot of review bombing situations involve people who haven't watched the show or played the game but heard about one specific issue. Those people then go to the review part of the website and immediately give it a 0 based solely on that issue without consuming the product or considering everything else. This obviously skews the "audience score" drastically and doesn't reflect the opinions of audience members who actually consumed the product and gave their honest opinion on the product as a whole.
@@PKPAPN What about the love bombing of certain media? Like what happened with Rings of Power. Does that give a good indication of what people think about something? The fact of the matter is that anything that gets review bombed does so with good reason. There isn't a single positive thing to take from the Acolyte so the terrible audience score is justified.
@@PKPAPN but on the flip side, when you purchase a franchise you inherit the fan base. When you turn on those fans they don't have to like the show or even watch it to have a legitimate opinion about it.
@@PKPAPN There was no way to know they watched the show before this was considered a "thing." In fact there is no way to know that positive reviews watched the show or are real and those should be way more suspect because they stand to make money from them.
Not only that when did we collectively decide that someone who watched a show for 5 minutes and quit doesn't have a valid opinion? If I ate two bites of food then got sick wouldn't you want to see my review for a restaurant?
@@PKPAPN Do we have good reason to believe that the critics themselves watched the entire season and are expressing their honest opinion, and not an opinion paid for by a corporation?
"They're not going to make corporate decisions based of RUclips videos"
Dislike bar is gone, discovery algorithm favors big corporate channels over smaller ones.
Multiple RUclips channels talking about how YT is changed things and is hiding their videos from being discovered.
Not to mention the HUGE and very popular issue that is RUclips unsubscribing people from channels. Look it up, even. It's been happening to me and channels that I know I've been subbed to for years, who I watch regularly, have been removed from my subscriber list. And when I try to resubscribe, it gives me an error. But all the very popular RUclipsrs who have millions of subscribers are still in my subscriptions.
There's no real fix or plan to fix this either. Apparently it's just RUclips randomly deciding to put a cap on accounts' subscription counts and limiting them to only 2,000 subscriptions. It makes no sense.
There is always a chance that critics are paid which makes their critic worthless
This has been going on since movies were in black and white with no sound, in every industry. Look up "Gamespot Kane and Lynch" if you're too young to remember that
yeah I think it's the same for all art forms, lots of money laundering going on, pay so called experts to explain that everyone who doesn't appreciate it is stupid. Instead of putting effort into the art itself, they change the meaning of art. But Disney is more insidious, cause they have a whole agenda with their stupid bs (which goes before the art in their case), and LOADS of explaining how terrible the audience is for using their eyes and ears.
RT has been caught in 4k manipulating scores since they went all in to protect Captain Marvel, possibly earlier.
Yup, its very obvious they work with the movie studios in order to protect the film and show investments. Wonder how much Disney pays them for that
Guys it's publicly owned by WB and Universal. OF COURSE THEY'RE LYING!
I think they want people to see the legitimate opinions of people who watched the movie and gave their honest opinion on the product as a whole. How many of the reviews of Captain Marvel were people who never even watched the movie but went to the site to give it a 0 based solely on the whole interview situation where the actor made controversial comments? That's not a legitimate review of the product, it's just someone expressing their anger at something said outside of the movie. So when the audience score becomes completely unrelated to a reflection of legitimate reviews of the movie, why would that be displayed?
@@danlorett2184 And as everyone knows, WB wants nothing more than for their own movies to flop and Disneys to succeed.
@@PKPAPN Because literally any reason is a valid reason to not like a movie. I know the sort of reviews your talking about and they always read as angry protest and not an actual review of the movie, but some part of the audience felt that about the product and so the review should remain. If other people read that review and value it more than one from someone that has seen the movie, so be it. People are capable of being discerning, the platform doesn't have to baby readers, it isn't to the users benefit.
There's also the fact that if hiding the review is effective in protecting the reputation of the movie then the outcome has been manipulated, which is just plain wrong in principle and should be avoided wherever possible.
I’ve never seen a show that wasn’t trash get “review bombed”. Weird how that works
It's almost like trash shows get rated like trash. When you are disney and have $180,000,000 invested in this show they will do what they must to protect their profits.
Ive seen plenty my dude, shows can be trash and people can be too
@@EM-bz1rn why don't you name those plenty shows? why even comment if you are not gonna bring anything of substance.
I've seen some and it's amounted to nothing. I've seen it attempted on a couple of games, usually being shot down instantly when the people who like the game figure it offended those people who are trying to review bomb. It would depend on the size of the existing audience though. It doesn't really happen to a large franchise if the media is good and pleases the majority of their target audience.

@kingkarlito dude why was it only for disney plus shows.
Disney is committed to fucking around and finding out
If you recall there was a scandal with Captain Marvel not too long ago where reviews were posted onto the site before the movie was released. Rotten Tomatoes called this a "Glitch" and as a result people were under the impression that they were fluffing the movie and timed it wrong.
For months, Acolyte haters were predicting Rotten Tomatoes would alter Acolyte audience scores as a form of damage control for the show. Thats why they jumped on this "glitch" so fast.
I would guess they probably really tried to change something.
As a person working in the IT sector I can tell, Every change, especially rushed changes can create bugs.
Not changing anything doesn'T create bugs. So there is a saying "Never change a running system".
So I would say it is very probable that they created a glitch while trying to tinker with the configurations and presentation and so on.
@@blablup1214 oh its a glitch only happening on high budget controversial disney shows? hmmm. your IT job didnt provide you with any critical thinking skills i guess. nice degree buddy. disney shows with 80% critic scores on RT but low audience score specifically "glitch".. wonder why IMDB never has any issues with review bombing or low scores.

They bought out tickets for that movie.
Don't worry guys, it was just a "bug"
That kind of reminds me of the Instagram iPhone incident, when the new iOS Beta revealed that Instagram was occasionally accessing the camera without reason. In a later press conference they also labeled it a "bug".
Disney gave them a call
There is more evidence for that than a technical glitch.
@@nickf2657 Just in time eh?
Even “glitches” can get people talking about it.
I don't really think disney gave them a call, to be honest. I'm not really sure how RT benefits from fudging the numbers for Disney. Maybe I'm wrong, but it feels like a dumb business decision considering most of their money probably comes from advertising, so potentially losing viewers to appease Disney doesn't sound like a solid move.
The big thing here though, imo, is that this shows how much folks distrust media sites at this point -- and for good reason.
Access
This isnt the first time they ''fixed'' reviews
They are likely now going to be mass deleting reviews below 2 stars for "review bombing" that seems to be the reason why it's going up bit by bit. In a few months it will he 50%+
They do this all the time
EXACTLY, I fucking hate this half-normie side of the internet.
I find it funny remembering older DVDs of movies where they'd proudly proclaim "3 stars!" on the box based on reviews from critics, when that would be considered a "low" rating by today's standards.
Now, you have movies and shows that try to proclaim "8/10! 9/10!" while there's plenty of audience backlash for one reason or another to show the opposite. The point being that critic reviews are generally much less trustworthy and reliable nowadays.
Because let's be real, you're lying to yourself if you believe that modern critic reviews are still just as honest and unbiased about media. Especially media that happens to be backed by multi-billion dollar studios with a shareholder incentive to profit off their "investments" rather than make a genuine piece of cinematic art.
its honestly just rotten tomatoes. its a 3.5 on IMDB. generally IMDB is solid, even the critic reviews. a 6-7 on IMDB i know exactly what im getting myself into. a mediocre but potentially entertaining movie. 8+ are the heavy hitters. 7+ are above average. anything below a 5 is generally pure trash. its quite literally only certain critic reviews not the entire industry. RT has been known for a while to be completely unreliable and full of shills. honestly the only reason people even talk about it still. IMDB has been consistent for YEARS. a 3.5/10 for this show is 100% acceptable score.
Glitch removes only bad press lol
Why do people even use RT? It’s clear that the reviews from the critics are bought and paid for
I tell my bf this... He is like "oh it has really good reviews!" And I'm thinking ... Does it though..? 😅
I trust critic reviews less than I trust Amazon reviews.
What's a better alternative for audience reviews, no one cares about the critic reviews
@Sanguinarius9999 I find IMBd to have pretty good user scores
The acolyte currently have 3,5 out of 10
People in the know don't use RT.
Think about all the normies who believe everything they see on TV or on whatever videos this site is pushing to the top. Those are the people that use that site.
Modern journalism is dead. Sad that you have to go to random communities on big names like Twitter, Reddit, RUclips, any site that is not the journalist site itself, for any honest review and discussion
Those places have shills still tho. But at least someone could find real opinions on there that aren't entirely censored
What does rottentomatoes have to do with jounalism ? It is an aggregate site that gives an average scores from all professional movie critics including yotube. Rottentomatoes does not do any reviews themselves but just an average score ie fresh or rotten basically.
@@logirex Rotten tomato is owned by Warner Bros and NBCUniversal and it purpose is to hide reviews from the audience and change them to arbiraty aggretated percentage, which may or may not correspond with the reviews, as it just tell if majority of reviews have given above or below average review. Access journalism. Critics need to kiss ass for access to movies or games. They believe it is necessary as not being able to publish before the general audience has access would be missing out on people searching for info about it.
Basically if they don't play softball with these large corporations, they can't publish their time-sensitive reviews when they'd be most profitable.

@@RoddHarding Personally I do too, but unfortunately the normies don't really pay much attention about who is trustworthy. They hear about an upcoming show, so they go and search for info about it. The sites that have articles get traffic to sell ads on.
Honest reviewers are facing an uphill battle, and I can only hope they will end up becoming more influential.
@@RoddHardingJournalists make money off of how many eyeballs see their stuff, and people (normies) aren’t going to read your article about something two weeks after they’ve read everyone else’s, so to compete, at least early on, you have to play that same game or fall behind and lose your job. Any journalist with integrity would be outcompeted by journalists who get the scoop first, at least early on before people grew skeptical.
It’s the same thing with manufacturing in china. Businesses in America that wanted to keep selling products that were only made in America would be outcompeted by businesses that bought stuff from china because china could provide it for “cheaper” (ie no safety standards, no pollution standards, paying the workers the equivalent of pennies a day).
Markets can unfortunately push even good businesses to have to either compromise on their principles or go out of business.

Something to keep in mind, RT has been caught in manipulative behavior and controversies several times over the last three to five years (probably as much as ten years, if memory serves). They removed 80% of the negative reviews of either the second or third Star Wars sequel movies, calling them "botted" reviews and "negative review bombing." Nothing new, they've been caught multiple times.
its fair to point out that they cared enough about a "minor hickup" that they claim was "fake controversy" that they made articles about it and found a youtube video to post about it. which means, yes they do keep up with youtube trending videos and found rotten tomatoes being bashed for it and yes they felt they had to combat something that they claim was a "minor hickup" with the sight. if they didn't care about either and also didn't understand their reputation was already in the gutter, they wouldn't have ignored this and moved on and it would have disappeared in a day. running counter articles on the criticism basically confirms that they at least know they are already notorious.
When it comes to Disney and Rotten Tomatoes there has been many "glitches"

There are 2 important things to mention here:
- You shouldn't trust any singular review because people can have bad incentives or just be completely off-base. However, there is something to be said for taking the aggregate view of a LOT of people. If anyone can rate things and a LOT of people do so, then the result is usually closer to the truth than any other methods.
- Official critics have unfortunately been mostly bought out (aka they've become access media) by studios and other corporations. Take Rottentomatoes for instance, it is owned by Warner Brothers, which is a media conglomerate that produces a ton of movies and TV shows. So how can their critics be objective when they're ultimately serving a master who makes all the stuff?

Today the critic scores are a lot higher, but the audience score never changed because it was always high. I havent trusted the "critics" of RT since 2000.
Meanwhile Tarantino while watching Snatch, probably: this shit is great man.

Who is they? Snatch came out in 2001. Most people didn't even have internet back then, and rotten tomatoes didn't have audience scores.
Also snatch is pretty terrible.
Snatch is a classic. I loved it from day one. Also, Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels.
almost every mainstream website is doing it: disabled comments, disabled dislikes, disabled ratings...they don't like that "normal" people have a voice.
As a programmer, if something is messed up in one place, it suggests that something is being done differently with that thing than with the rest of the code. They were probably trying to throttle the number of negative reviews that a show can receive without realizing why that's problematic
Wasn't Rotten Tomatoes also literally proven or leaked that they manipulate the audience score on certain shows or movies, to be higher or lower than it actually is for 5 years like 1 year ago?

Audience Score = People who give honest review

Rotten Tomatoes has been disabling audience scores for the opening weeks of shows and movies for years.
Normally I would say Asmon is right, but this isn’t the first time in the past 8-10 years that Rotten Tomatoes has done this. This is not the only dot on the graph.
For this instance ok, but as a whole Rotten Tomatoes tinkers with its scores all the time and gets caught.
We no longer trust review sites, we trust regular people talking about it

Acolyte didn't even deserve a rating
Or even be on the site wasting server space because its just as forgettable
Oh I disagree, people have to know it's trash or they would have to suffer watching it to find out themselves which just encourages the creators and boosts their views
Considering they have been previously caught taking bribes for reviews, manipulating the scores, and their weird fascination for cuties. They're toast, it's easier to believe they did it on purpose because they have lost their integrity
As a software engineer this sounds like a caching issue. A lot of websites hide panels/sections if there was an error returning data to prevent showing a broken piece of a web page
But why d plus only
Movie critics are so insufferable, they are on par with vegan cyclists and journos. Their score means nothing.
It would be like a vegan rating hamburger without eating it, critics normally have no taste in the things they are reviewing which is dumb.
The 2 old men would say an action movie is objectively a poorly made movie that scores X/10, but they could also say that it is fun and entertaining.
I remember way back in the early 2010's filtering video game reviews by user score because even back then it was common knowledge that critic scores are worthless.
@@XgoodbyeX
Actually very accurate. All you need is a diverse cast and just an attempt to be "deep" and ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.
Actual execution doesn't matter, you know the actual show/movie itself. They can't give less of a s#!t for accuracy too.
I disagree... People just use critics wrong. First of all RT has always been a bad site mainly because of the scuffed rating system. Metacritic is the way better movie critic score and imdb the better audience score to go by. Secondly as a viewer you should find the critic or reviewer who has a similar taste as you do and you often agreed with in the past on ratings to determine whether you might like newly released shows and movies or not. Tastes are different, thats just a fact and a pure compilation of critical ratings is meaningless to the ordinary viewer. Thirdly some critics take aspects into consideration the normal viewers dont. When you have watched thousands upon thousands of hours of cinema because that is your job there are hardly things that catch you by surprise which is why often more experimental projects are higher rated by critics than by the audience, simply because those films dare something new and are not made to cater towards big audiences. Robert Eggers "The Witch" in particular comes to my mind, which was praised by critics but hated by audiences when it got released.
Now especially with franchises like Star Wars fan culture plays a big role. Viewers are emotionally invested, know the lore etc. and easily get disappointed or easily hyped whereas critics usually dont have a horse in the race. In case of "The Acolyte" the vast majority of critics who published a rating did this on the basis of the first four episodes of the show, because that is what everybody got as early review material. And the show is still running so this rating might still change over time. With that being said the critics that i particularly follow disliked the show.
Its like when youtube remived the thumbsdown.
You dont want your hammer telling you which nail you can and cant hit
Did Asmon really just agree with the guy the entire video and then say he's jumping to conclusions without evidence?
People hate this reimagined DEI Star Wars. Disney knows it, because they brag about it, then they get mad that people won't just like it.
Disney can actually afford the failure. Blackrock, vanguard, all provide ESG Tax Insentives. Its basically overdraft protection for movies.

The evidence is that RT has done this multiple times already, when you delete 10s of thousands of reviews often enough people won't believe your excuses anymore.
I've done some app developing and I think the only way to have this as a "technical glitch" is to work on that specific code that affect the score for that specific movie. So I think they were working on that code for whatever reason , they were tampering with it. I think that's proof enough that something malicious was happening.
I'm checking RT out now and I see they have a "most popular tv" list. Guess what's at the top with 83%...The Acolyte. I was leaning towards this just being a site glitch or something but now I'm with those that say RT changed their system again to protect Disney.
Absolutely, just like they did for Captain marvel.
How? They have the Boys at 93%, The Bear at 96%, House of the Dragon at 90%?
@meciocio ya I agree. For some reason Acolyte was at the top yet the shows below it had scores in the 90s
The critics score is like your boss' score, the audience score is his company's customers' score.
14:20 Perfect example of this is Godzilla Films and Kong Films from Legendary. Critics are talking about story users raving about how great visually monsters look and how much fun it was to watch. Critics dont like to have fun XD
Weird how technical issues always are in a SJW direction. That’s 3 of these I can think of in the last couple weeks

1:14 I refuse to give Disney the data that I watched that show after the third episode. Also been avoiding videos about because i just don't care about the show, it's bad, i don't need to know how bad. I'm watching this because the idea of pulling audience reviews especially for a show like The Acolyte is wild.
It lines up with a data glitch where they were implementing something to only show critic reviews on the home page, and when that was tested it killed the score on other pages since the data wasn't being sent anymore to those requests for a little while. Server caching etc covers it not happening everywhere all at once. Then they revert that change which is why you see audience scores on the homepage in the video but not when asmon checked it later.

as a web dev i can guarantee you that a component like the audience score either disappears for ALL elements or none. these components on a web page are not copy pasted, they are created once, imported, reused and fed with different data for every element. for the audience score to go missing on specifically just one of those, there must have been manual tinkering with the data involved. technical glitch is completely out of the question
If audience score disappears, Tomatoes is dead in the water. Probably rightfully so
Rotten Tomatoes specifically deserves very little benefit of the doubt in this regard. In terms of specific TV vs all TV shows, it wasn't all TV shows. House of the Dragon, Arcane, etc... just random TV shows were not affected but every Disney Star Wars was (including ones that aren't poorly received like The Mandolorian S1 and Andor)
Rotten Tomatoes has the current system they have because they were doing damage control for Captain Marvel back in the day, and they commonly change the rules of their site and methodology to shield Disney specifically.
So 'other points on the line' in this case are the years of history the site has had trying to damage control for major companies, mostly Disney.
Now, does that confirm what they were doing here? Not really, but again, they deserve very little benefit of the doubt and their lack of transparency on what they're changing and why diminishes their use as a review website. In fact currently they primarily exist just to act as a talking point for the media/RUclipsrs taking shots at each other and nobody actually cares what the scores are or what the reviews say.
Does Zach not realize that Disney puts out an article like once a week stating how RUclips review bombers are killing their shows?
He has indeed talked about this before.
A "technical glitch",
boy, they sure tried it
As a web dev, I can tell you that is very unlikely that the website loads slower because they're making changes. Much less a UI feature removal.
I can also tell you that while it is possible that the audience score thing was a technical problem, it is very unlikely. Specially since it supposedly happened only to Star Wars stuff.
The critic is just 1 audience members. Why is their opinion regarded higher than the audience
Because they actually watch movies and not just the Super Mario Bros movie and Sonic the whole year.
@@meciociouhuh sure they do. Have you been living under a rock or something?
the rotten tomatoes critic score is a amalgamation of usually 100s of critic scores.
Critics aren't critics anymore; they're shills. The word is the same, the purpose is not.
@@meciocio You do realize the only qualification to be a "critic" is you get paid for it right? It's not like you go to school for this we literally value people as a critic based solely on the fact that they get a check for it.
Or in other words something that would be a disqualifying metric in any other context.
if both scores would have been removed it could have been a technical glitch. But since only the audience score was removed, then sorry, I dont buy the technical glitch excuse. Either way, I dont case because even 14% is way too high for this show
The fact it happened to this specific show and it removed the terrible audience score means it was intentional.
Thats not how glitches work though. Just becuase one went down, doesnt mean the other will. And vice versa.
