As a New Yorker let me explain the reason for this. Basically the reason that this is happening is because back in 2020 NYC Mayor Bill De Blasio pushed and passed Bail Reform. Basically when you get arrested you would sit in a local jail, usually a police precinct until you can see a judge or NY District Attorney who will then advise NYPD what to do with the prisoner. This process could take time depending on the charges and the case details. Most people would sit in the local jail unless they paid for bail which would allow them to pay money to get released early skipping the waiting process. The bail money that you paid would be held hostage as a way to coerce you to go to your court date.
Bail Reform skips that waiting period entirely and it is instead catch and release.
While bail reform in itself is not a terrible idea the NY implementation is terrible.
In NY, Bail Reform applies to both Misdemeanor (Small Crimes) and Felonies (Major Crimes). This means that you can Murder someone in NYC, get released the same day and then murder all the witnesses. There was an instance where a man did SA on someone, was released and did it to another person, was arrested and then released again. Only to do it a third time, get arrested and finally bail was denied.
Bail Reform needs to apply to Misdemeanor Crimes Only. It should also not apply to repeat offenders, and bail reform should only be granted to individuals with a job.
Homeless and Illegal Immigrants can commit crimes 24/7 and they never see a day in court because when they skip court and a warrant is placed on them, they cannot be found.
In Addition, Mayor De Blasio granted legal immunity to all minors. As long as you are attending a NYC Department of Education School, even if you are 18-20 as long as you continue to go to school, you have legal immunity. So you have gangs who recruit teenagers to commit crimes as they cannot be prosecuted.
Shoplifting is considered a Misdemeanor as long as you steal under $1000. Once it hits $1000 it turns into a Felony.
Previously when Republicans were in office it was considered a Felony if you stole over $100, Democrats changed it to $1000. In addition Democrats have also passed laws restricting people from stopping shoplifters. When Republicans were in Office Stores had a right to defend their property and stop theft and could use force. So a store owner/security could legally whip your ass if you tried to steal as long as you had video evidence. Democrats made Store Owners and Police Powerless and empowered criminals.
The Democrats have destroyed NYC with a series of terrible laws.

I can see stores going back to the old "order and we'll get your items" approach, but with all products and workers behind bars. Jamaica has container shops like this - you tell them what you want and they go fetch it, rather than letting you walk around pocketing stuff.
Yes the old general stores of 1830's, but the customer watches the clerk from the outside using the store cameras and talking to them on their phone. A zero contact until payment is made type store. I'm a business owner in the state of Florida and my business is near the hood and of 30+ years of business I have only been shop lifted of a grand total of $100. It isn't the environment, it's the people.

Is the same people who hold others accountable. and if it ever went to Robing and looting, they would protect your store and they would not let nothing happen to your store or you. I've said this before and I believe this. Soon what will happen is you won't be allowed to go into stores anymore. You will have to either order online or order through a kiask in a little entrance area of the store and the employees will just bring your stuff out to you. No longer will you be able to walk around and browse, because the only way to reduce rampant crime like this is if the public has minimal access to the products before they buy.
The other extream is also possible too. Entrance to the store requires upfront payment for potential damages of $100-300 and a crazy number of cameras everywhere tracking your movements throughout the store. And the computer keeps track of what you're purchasing or damaging.
Think Costco but with more secure air lock type security to get inside, and the store locks down completely for the safety of restockers. Damage products, manage to trick the automated system and steal, then your premium to enter the store is forfeited. Walk out with more goods than your premium credit then it will be raised for you to access the store in the future.
The people will put up with your method of service by request or this ultra security monitoring if prices are able to stay low. But both methods if successful are only going to encourage thieves to target the buyer post sale.

So if you ever just up and dip with something, they can just charge your card after the fact, and if it declines, well your bank has all your info so it won’t be hard for the police to find you.

You ever wonder why little italy and greektown doesn't get hit in Chicago? Because the mafia is still active there and will bury your ass for trying to mess up their businesses (they own quite a few of the businesses in that area of Chicago. Yet those little shops stay open no matter what, even through COVID. I lived in those neighborhood for a long time going to school and even afterwards for a bit. They're actually pretty nice guys so long as you're respectful (i normally and the type to say "yes sir no sir" so we got along). I was drinking coffee once and they came up and asked to buy my car for like 2k. It was a pretty shitty car but i needed it for school and told them that. They just said "oh sorry, good luck" and walked away. My view on mafia-types had changed since then, at least they have the balls and respect to keep regular people out of their dirty business, and when they do involve you you're always compensated...
edit: i would like to note that living in these (mob controlled) areas you should expect increased rent, you should carry cash with you to the store because they don't like credit or debit (never carry more than 50 bucks at a time), and just always remember to be polite to the older folks (you never know if they're part of the family or know someone who is)

I got a small shop in Poland. Some dudes stole 4 beers 2 days ago. I showed the camera recording to my good old customers that know everyone and everything about neighborhood. 2 days later, the thiefs came back to shop, to apologize, pay and told that it wont happen again. Im scared while watching these videos from USA or western EU.

I have a buddy who stopped at a gas station one time and some homeless guy asked him for money because "he was hungry". My friend declined, but he bought the guy two bags worth of food and drinks inside the gas station. When he gave it to the guy, he proceeded to throw those bags of food and drinks in the dumpster next to the gas station. Turns out he must've been full.

@@rahn45 that is exactly what NYC does, bodega worker who had a guy attack him with a knife, he was arrested and jailed. Or the subway guy who stopped a crazy person who was acting very erratic and actively threatening to kill passengers, the guy who stopped him is sitting in prison.
Protection laws should be put in place so grocery stores can protect themselves like with doormen like clubs without the threat of lawsuits.

I've heard a shocking number of anecdotes of people who are middle/upper class shoplifting stuff not because they need it, but just because they wanted the thrill and/or didn't want to pay for something even though they could afford it.
This "because I'm poor" excuse doesn't fly for me, because it clearly doesn't apply to many of these criminals.

I worked at a Ralph's grocery store about 20 years ago and they closed the location down because over 35% of the stuff leaving the store was stolen or unaccounted for, saw people stealing constantly and back then it still seemed relatively uncommon for that type of thing to happen.
These days I can't even begin to imagine how much profit some stores lose due to theft. It's as much of a problem as opiate addiction in terms of how deep it's spread, at this point it's going to take some radical changes to get things going back to the right direction.
"Cops don't care" because they are forced to ignore it. The laws in those states are absolutely allowing shoplifting. The lawmakers have been bribed to allow this in order to bring down real estate values for certain billionaires who want to take control of these cities by buying everything at a low price. Once they are satisfied, the laws will be amended and cities restored under a new leadership.

The cops care a lot. The problem is the DA, the laws, and the voters. If the law said citizens, store owners, and cops could do anything they wanted to stop theft, you know exactly what would happen.

The fact that a lot of these people are stealing from stores local to their communities, hence screwing over those communities when the stores close. Something needs to be done about it.
It's all bad, not just small local stores. Did you know big chains often use funds from locations in wealthy areas to supplement the ones in poor issues so they can stay open despite high cost of doing business and low profits? Also the loss of jobs in the community is a huge problem, and the bigger chains employ more people than the small local businesses usually. The thieves and vandals are CAUSING poverty.
I remember the "they have insurance", "they are rich so they can take it" and the "stealing under $1000 of stuff is so that people that need to eat wont get prosecuted" arguments a few years ago. Also, how come there are people who are poor that won't steal things? Some have been raised to know right from wrong
That’s the main issue, that $1000 min. They need to make it to where anything over $40, it’s an automatic felony like the law Florida just passed.

I heard this story from a friend that works in a hardware store. We are in Canada btw so might differ from the US, but the gist of it is that apparently every thursday there is a dude that comes into the store with one of those big gym bags, he stuffs as many power tools as he can in it and just book it. He runs out of the store and employees are told they should not try to stop him and just call the cops. Every week then they call the cops, they arrive obviously after the guy left and nothing is done about it. Even tho they know he will be back the exact same day next week. Apparently he was doing this for months and I would never know if he still does since my friend got moved to another store closer to his home.
Now everyone knows why the suburbs exist.
I remember during some of the "Peaceful protests" a few years back that an IRL streamer stopped and talked to a police officer and asked why don't they arrest these people for destruction of property and assaulting people, the officer looked at him and said "Because it's pointless. we arrest them, take them in and they get released almost instantly because of the district attorney and politicians demanding it, it's basically like a revolving door" It's basically like trying to instill consequences to a child only for someone to come along and cut down the punishment. the kid gets it in their head that they can do whatever they want because someone with more sway says no,you can't punish them.

In Texas, shoplifting anything under $2,500 is a misdemeanor. Had Austin PD refuse to come out to the store once after we told them the suspect shop lifted $1,500 worth the stuff and we were able to citizen arrest them. They told us to let our store insurance handle it and they'll send in the police report to them.
Does this apply in NYC is my question? Because I know that applied in that place where they petitioned to "defund the police", which is the stupidest thing I ever heard since I was born.

Also, there should be a clause in the law (which I think should be applied in every part of the world) that when someone gets jailed for the same or related cases, at the 5th time, d3ath penalty should be applied.

Also, there's a policy that the cashier or staff of that store "might" pay for all that was lost. It is unfair, I agree, but at the same time, it's the store's employees jobs to make sure that the store is running properly.
This is one of those situations where people go "think of the poor, we should not be too hard on them, the big businesses can afford it" when it only negatively impacts the small business, and in the long term, big businesses benefit. No Mom&Pop resturant will ever be able to open when the minimum requirement is to have all your employee's behind a bulletproof window. The cost of entry will simply be too high. So what happens? Small business's collapse, and now you can only use larger retailers. Congratulations, you played yourself.

If a business isn't profitable then why keep it open. Or you can look at it this way if a job lowered wages to the point of $0 then would you continue to work? The same people who "need" those products will go without it anyway eventually.
On top of all this, the government made law to not prosecute causing theft which raises prices in order to keep the store open. This is compounded with inflation and higher minimum wages. Now add the fact that the government now wants to open a new department of law enforcement which combat's this specific issue due to their own law they made. This new department has a budget and that money is coming from tax payers. This now you have a government seeking higher taxes due to government spending which also increases inflation.
You have to bite the bullet some day. Allowing petty theft because someone is struggling and you feel bad for them isn't going to solve the issue but only spiral it out of control as we can see.

A pack of smokes were on average just $3-5 for most brands, even known ones like Marlboro and Camel (coming from a former smoker that remembers paying $3.50 for a pack of Camel Crushes and Marlboro Light 100s in my rural area back in the early 2010s). Even cheaper years prior.
Wasn’t until the last few years that smokes have went up over $7 on average for one pack across the board (outside of the cheap brands that taste like ass, but even then, some of them are still pretty cheap under $4 a pack).
I think you mean a carton of cigarettes as they were about $30-40 for 12 packs for most brands. 1 pack was still rather cheap a decade ago.

I've lived in NY since 1993, live in Queens and work in Manhattan and Brooklyn and take the subway everyday. Anyone telling you it's "not bad" or "media is hyping it up" nah - it's bad. People are afraid of taking the trains, more homeless dudes than ever just sleeping in the trains or pacing up and down the aisle of the train car muttering to themselves while everyone else tries to ignore it. Entire blocks with closed or for rent signs on stores and restaurants. Tables of stolen goods being sold in front of major train stations. NYC is still easily the safest place in America I've ever commuted or walked around in by a mile, even with this. There is a difference between one or two items getting lifted and what appears to be happening now. I can't speak for New York, but I have relatives in Cali and they say that large groups will roll in and empty entire shelves. It may not happen to every store every day, but even if it happens only once in a couple of months to any particular store its going to be a huge problem. A mom and pop store that gets hit twice may no longer have the funds to order the next truck load. A large corporate chain can distribute the losses and keep operating, but they're going to raise prices to compensate. At some point the losses are high enough that there's no longer any way to recoup the losses, so they shut the stores in problem areas down.

Work at a store at a nice town in Minnesota. We have just started putting up cabinets with plexiglass for higher brand soaps. We already have fake nails, eye lashes, and a few other things on locked J hooks. Even more expensive tooth brushes are locked behind cases. Its not the middle class people or lower class people coming in to steal. Its a certain group of people that always come in and steal every time. Its the District Attorneys that don't care. Police can arrest a criminal individual multiple times but if the DA doesn't want to charge them the police can't do anything about the decision the DA made. There have been many cases where the criminal is just released. They have also made theft of any amount less than $1,000 just a misdemeanor charge. Even if they were a repeat offender. Also any worker in those stores that tries to intervene gets in trouble when they attempt to stop the theft. There was a case where a female worker was fired for attempting to stop a theft. I believe she worked at a clothing store. Can't remember if it was a fancy one or not.

There is a very simple solution: an airlock with scales, everyone who comes in is weighed and what they buy is also weighed. The lock to the outside only opens when both match. Toilets are located outside the store so that there are no problems with charging.

Most people don't understand the concept of insurance because they have never had to deal with it beyond simple things like car liability insurance or hear their parents talking about it. They think of insurance as this magical thing that just gives you all your money back when something bad happens which is hardly the case. You won't get 100% of the loss returned to you, not to mention the increase in premiums you mentioned.
And even worse than that insurance companies don't have to insure anyone they don't want to. If you are racking up so many claims that it is no longer worth the companies time they can and will drop you. Once you are at that point good luck getting insurance again (Unless you go to some really bad companies where the rates are sky high).

we will charge them higher fees because of "security", but insurance companies dont cover companies losses if they are lost for stupid reasons.
These large shoplifting sprees are in a sense "stopable" with extra security, but the amount of security they have isnt large enough so its probably a case of "could have increased your security to prevent this, therefore we wont cover the losses here"
Companies are extra liable to prevent losses because most companies have a way bigger budget than a privat person does, so there are numerous "loopholes" the insurance company can get away with.
Privat insurance is way more in the customers favor than dealing with B2B. This is also why there are numerous insurance companies for business rather than private.
Worked in retail for 20 years. Once I caught a guy shoving a $10 computer mouse down his shirt. When I confronted him, I asked him if he would like to pay for it and if he wanted me to take it to the counter for him, he told me he had nothing under his shirt. I asked him if he wanted to go to jail and have a criminal conviction over $10. He still denied it. He walked out with the mouse. I called the police, and they caught him later that day. My point being, if there are consequences, people will learn. At the very least he should have learned to steal high priced items. I am in Australia.

cameras are often not checked unless they actually think someone is suspicious. so most times they just don't know something has ben stolen until they do a inventory check and by then they would have to look through so much footage that it ain't worth it.

The security guards don’t help. I watched two security guards stand by the door as multiple people grabbed racks of clothing and walked out. The guards said they aren’t really allowed to physically detain or tackle anyone, they can only make the request. As soon as people realized the guards are just there to maintain the illusion of security, they became completely useless to stop thieves. The security guards are worried about being sued or charged themselves for assault.

I grew up the third of four kids to a single mom. We didn't always have money for food. One time, desperate for chocolate cause we didn't often have it, I stole a candy bar at the register while my mom was checking out. She made me put it back and apologize. Being poor doesn't mean you have no moral obligations or dignity. She taught me that early.
As a poor family, we received food, furniture, clothing, school supplies, and Christmas gifts from our local church, government assistance programs, and my mom's workplace. All of those things still exist. If you are truly desperate and in need, people will help for free. People who use the excuse of income to justify stealing either have no dignity themselves, or are upper income who view the poor as little more than animals who simply can't control their base impulses. It's all a farce.
When I was younger, our house caught on fire. Within a week, there was a church foundation that reached out to us and gave us free clothes and school supplies because my mom's friend was a church-goer there. We don't even go to church. Luckily, the insurance helped with the rest. They even sent people every day for the first month and gave us their home-cooked dinner. This story isn't related, and I know nobody asked... but I figured I'd share. Churches can be really neat.

The rest of it comes in processed through the backdooor off box trucks. You are stealing directly from them. Walmart loses nothing when vendor product is stolen. They are 1-sided... they only profit when the item is sold.

Calling this theft is definitely a misrepresentation of what’s actually happening. This is more of a mass raid on the store where they clear entire shelves of stuff.

Literally they grab truck loads of crap then go sell it on the street for 5 or 10 bucks per item meanwhile the ones that get arrested get out the same or next day with pocket change for a bailout there's probably millions of people involved in this in all the big cities where this is happening. No wonder the stores are pulling out and for what reason are they letting this happen? It's all so they can implement marshal law.

5:42 I worked at walmart and all the managers were told that they had to escort "expensive items" that are locked up to the register with the customer to make sure they don't steal, it was a rule most of management didn't do because lots of customers would get reasonably and quite often unreasonably mad over. I was especially not done with really cheap items, for instance beauty products are the number one department for item thefts so even things as cheap as $4 fake eye lashes would be locked behind a glass container so unless a stickler for the rules manager was around the cheaper items were often just given to the customers, if you could find a manager who had a key for the locked case that is.
as a note, the glass window shown at about 28:50 isn't unusual or chain linkage; certain doors have glass designed to either weaken or break during a fire, which can potentially lower the toxicity of a room's air for a while. it's p standard across the united states afaik.
This level of social erosion is pretty damning. Visit a sane country and you’ll see that nothing is chained, there aren’t hundreds of guards or staff watching everything. People aren’t shit because they don’t have to be and don’t want to be.

I went to the ER for my husband a couple of nights ago, it was also set up like a bank. And there was still a crackhead in the room we were in stealing a bunch of ace wraps and packaged items. Touching all over everything and left when they wouldnt give her food. Also sneezed right on me 😒
self checkouts are the easiest way to steal. Just scan the cheap stuff and skip other items. Walmart just blankly looks at your receipt and fakes like they’re reading it lol.

Honestly yeah, as someone who soberly played the "believe the best in people, and be the change you want to believe in". I can firmly say. One size doesn't fit all. Some people do change on that, but the type that don't, rarely ever will.

See this type of logic is flawed. It's not me who is risking their life it's them. The question should be is it worth gambling your life for someone else's stuff? Because not everyone is willing to let you walk away. Now when it comes to shop lifting their I personally don't see a reason to take somones life. It's more when you break in to a home as we have no idea why you are hear and I'll be damed if your touching my child. Yeah it gets complicated.

The problem is that those 3 meals a day and a place to stay comes with the stipulation that no respectable place will ever want to hire you again. People hit rough patches and they should be punished for it but the punishment should fit the crime. Nobody should be punished for a minor crime for their whole life.

So my dad is the manager for a supermarket chain (comparable to Walmart) and supervises about 1/4 of the stores of that chain in Berlin.
Every week he tells me that he had to fire someone because they stole something and regularly it’s multiple people at once because they helped each other.

I was a store manager for a discount type retailer, and people come in with shopping trolleys and use their arm to completely scoop entire shelves worth of stock into their trolly. it got so bad we had undercover cops pretend to be customers and catch them, but all they did was take their details and let them go. it was so bad they even knew their names. Why can't they go to jail?
