Now get over here and do me!" Celie says, "Alright." You know she's done. She was gonna kill that man. The shots between the shave scene and the ceremony in Africa are breathtaking. Dont get me wrong, the 2023 version looks STUNNING and the actors did AMAZING, but to me it feels a bit too cinematic to a point where it feels like a story if that makes sense. She'll cut Mister, go to jail and be hung.
And that's ok but Nettie and the kids are ok.

      @yesitislikethat 7 месяцев назад +7

@@SanFranDentist94301 Yes, obviously she would have been held accountable by the law if she had taken his life. That’s a given. I mean, seriously, look at what happened to Sofia for simply defending herself after being slapped.
The point is that, *in that moment* (when shaving Albert) Celie was *not* thinking or caring about the consequences of her actions. In _that moment_ she was *done* and wanted to ‘hurt’ the one who had hurt her & drove her sister away. Fortunately, Shug prevented her from doing so.
*Anyone* in a toxic, abusive ‘relationship’ has a “long way to go” in order to heal and address the trauma. As I stated in my previous comment- Celie now had a support system and the knowledge that she wasn’t alone anymore. She now knew for a fact that 1) Nettie had never forgotten her or given up trying to contact her & (2) Her children were alive!
She had a future to look forward to. This helped to give her the strength to leave Albert. She didn’t have to accept her life as it was. 💜💜💜

Her transformation in the first movie was so moving. This was one of my favorite scenes. It also set up the future and helped explain why Mister let her go without too much of a fight. No wonder it is failing at the box office.

  • @MadTeaMarie
    @MadTeaMarie 6 месяцев назад +3

EXCELLENT video. In the original, we saw Celie get farther before she even left. She had rage, and THEN she got galvanized into self-determination. She wasn't REACTING when she stood up for herself at that dinner table. She'd reacted so many times before that, up to and including that shave. But at that dinner table, she wasn't reacting. She was taking the reins of her entire life into her own hands and telling MISTER how it was going to be.
That's the energy that got passed on to Sofia, and that's the energy she cursed him with HER power to decide how things were going to be, that she'd just put her hands on. She didn't have to go somewhere else to find it, Shug didn't give it to her by taking her somewhere else for some off-camera montage of experiences.
It wasn't that she wasn't hurt the way 2023 Celie was hurt. It was that the script and Whoopi Goldberg let us see Celie feel it and get farther along in it. I think the 2023 version doesn't stay as true to Alice Walker's characters or message in the book, and even changes it, which I don't like. Yes, the 1985 version downplayed the depth and intimacy of Shug and Celie's relationship, but the 2023 one DELETED the complexities.

I love the 1970s version of Roots. I didn't think it needed to be remade in 2015 and refused to watch it because I didn't want my idea of the original tainted. Curiosity got the best of me and I was prepared to hate and criticize the new version.
To my surprise I really liked the new version of Roots. It's natural to compare and I refuse to say it's better than the old version out of respect to the old version, but it was a great and updated version. The actors held their own and I liked the added elements. Now both versions are meaningful to me and stand on their own in their own right.

Seems like they just switched parts around and kinda made them a little different so they didn't seem the same. Like in the main movie they showed the 14 year old Cellie and she was shaving Mister. She was afraid when he said.. " And you better not cut me" and she accidently scraped his neck as he jumped up to go get the mail. They sort of compined that part into the part of Fantasha shaving him later and he was expecting Shug. Only the younger version in the first movie she was thinking about getting a letter from Nettie. It was like both of those scenes were like the same purpose because they didn't show a younger Cellie shaving him in the new one. I was also upset because they made a point of the color Purple and they expressed it very well in the first one and they had Shug and Cellie walking through the field of special colored purple flowers 🟪🟪🟪🟣🟣🟣🟣🟣🟣🟣🟣 and Shug explained How much God wanted us to notice. the color purple when you pass by it. Now they had in the new one, Shug explains it the same way, and yes I even heard they painted the flowers more purple in the first one. We saw the two girls run through the very beautiful scene of the flowers togther and how they loved doing the hand games and saying My Kee Da Da"" song .. That was special and so many other things About how close they were as girls and women how that color brought them together. As they showed them from afar how everyone was staring and your heart was beating all of the beautiful colored flowers between the scene like they had in the beginning and Cellie on her last leg of hope looking out at the field and nobody knew it was Nettie but probably Mr. And Cellie with her light purple dress on and she looks out among the flowers and see her sister's dress flowing in the wind and it was a beautiful purple she noticed . She yells with all of her might. As Nettie softly reaches OUT to her saying her name... YOU KNOW it was like she came to see us!! Then she runs through the field with all she had left and everybody else stood in shock. She made it to her family with the most " I missed the heck outta you greetings ever. Purple played a big part. It also was meant for the sad buises too. The new movie you hardly saw a drop of purple especially at the end and the meeting at the end was like it was only a year since they seen each orher. It didn't seem as loving. It waa more like " Oh people from Africa" and the kids reacted like " Who is this?" As she hugged them. Nettie was too light where they should have been able to tell she wasn't from Africa like she said in tge first one. Plus we missed hoq Shug actualky sang the songs she did in the club and the church. Power scenes with her father, Ms. Cellie and Her own sister. It was more believable in the fiest one and a bit too copied , like if we didn't see some of the parts in the firsr one tgen we wouldn't understand most of the scenes in the new one. Believe it or not, with it being musical it wasn't the part that ruined the movie, it was how they ran throufh the parts and we had to fit the scenes from the first movie in to believe the new movie especially the parts that were supposed to be the most dramatic. Even when she met Albert's children. The dad's issues.. Tge fights and they didn't show how Harpo actually grew up from a boy to a man. Like " Did you saddle my horse!?""" When he was young he waa getting to it.. And he had that same question as a young man. " I's gettin to it!"" Cellie and Nettie were more like two sisters in the firsr one. The new movie they looked more like cousins. Even Shug and Cellie seemed closer doing things together in the first one. Sophia was stronger and had way morw expression, how she expressed herself to everybody. The scene in the first one nobody could do the scenes Oprah did. With meeting the dad, how she faced him beating Harpo's behind and didn't take nothing from him and of course how she confronted Ms. Cellie in the corn field with that one line and the hitting everybody like she did and how she snapped back at the dinner table. That will always be way morw classic. It was like to make the new movie, it would be like putting Michael Jackson on stage to sing and then letting Eddie Murphy close it. If we saw the new one firsr we would have enjoyed the original movie more. All of that purple introduction and we hardly saw any in the new movie that's why it sucked to me. 😊😊😊😊 Thanks for the clip. 🟪🟪🟣🟣🟣🟣🟣 2024 ( read the book) ❤

In my opinion, Steven Spielberg's mind was so intricate and detailed and he did his rearch or however directors do. He truly stands out in his line of work. Not discrediting anyone in his field at all. But he did make us feel a part of this whole journey, and it doesnt feel staged, if rhat makes sense. The new version just seems from this reaction to be trying too hrd to one up. Elders used to say it best, ifit broke dont fix it.

Everyone had "I won a Grammy" veneers which I was not keen on and seemed incongruous within the time period. The Fantasia version was closer to the book and as a Liberian I appreciate people not showing up in full Kente (Ghana) but in Ankara... better but tie dye is more our thing. Also Fantasia is clearly a conventionally beautiful woman. Whoppy G. is more what my great gran would call "gronnah" and her small dry frame fits the story. Y'all know that the ceremony in the Spielberg film is feminine genital mutilation, right 😅 that is what Olivia is walking towards. Also face scarification is more Nigeria to me. Also, also, no Jenifer Hudson 😢

I LOVE Tasia, but Whoopi OWNED the Ceilie character.
    Telling Harpo to beat Sophia
When Mister was trying to cook for Shug, and he brought in the Kerosene the way that damn rocking chain showed that she got out of there quickly.
And when she was about to take Mister out by sliting his neck and Shug saved his life.
We walk with Celie and her struggle to be with Mister, the struggle of missing her sister, when they found those letters in the floor we were elated and we all wanted Mister to die. Nobody will ever match Whoopi as Celie!!💯💯

    Both scenes are INTENSE
But the original scene is unmatched !! When I was in the theater I kept thinking how it didn’t give me what I was expecting, and it was solely because of the 1985 film. I read the book when I was young and that scene aligned with the what I envisioned through Alice Walker’s pages.
The Cinematography Composition Was Superb !
I was a young girl in 85, and like many others I Hated Danny G for a long time ! It wasn’t until about the second installment of
“Lethal Weapon” that I began to “care for him.” And it does speak to how WELL he played that character.
It’s interesting how this in depth juxtaposition breathes revelation of Ceily’s internal conflict in 2023 vs. Ceily’s Reassurance of “one’s self” in 1985.
I Thoroughly Enjoyed The Remake 🥰 There Were Some Hidden Gems That Filled In Some Imaginative Gaps For Me 😍

I will start by saying that I haven’t seen the original film, and I was introduced to The Color Purple through the 2023 film. When I had watched this scene, I didn’t take it as it just being a shave scene as described in the video. I took it as Celie going through her inner monologue, conflicted on if she can go as far as killing another person, and THAT is why she was so worried. And while Shug being married may be a part of Mister’s fear, it’s also that he just felt a knife push much harder into his throat than it should. I think the scene says the same thing in both, just in a MUCH more subtle way. I respect you guys’ perspectives and I hear you, but I think the scene portrayed what needed to be portrayed, especially from someone who had not known the story before this

Since it was a musical, I feel they could’ve done a scene showing the African ritual as a more assured and angry Celie prepares to “shave mister”

It's not even necessary that all the movies are good, but it is nice to have black analysis that is quality. It is nice to have a true break down of various things as a spectator, and a creator.
The reaction men had during the release of the 80s film was very similar to the current one, that is interesting to see. I didn't watch any of the musicals because both the book and the original film had music placed where it should be; extra music took away from the drama. I absolutely prefer the original, mostly because the author of the book was incorporated in the making of it. Alice Walker chose Whoopie for the role of Celie. I think the shade of the actresses mattered as well as portrayal of ages. I like all the actresses and actors in both films, I just think in the current movie, those actresses and actors would do better with other scripted roles. It would be interesting to get honest feelings of the actresses/actors who were old enough to remember when the original came out.
Love your commentary, I don't always agree but a lot of the times I do. I know look at boyz in the hood as a different aspect of higher learning; I look at certain writers differently because of things you say. I love the deep analysis and watched Tyler Perry's movies because you broke them down....😅 You are very healthy criticism where even the artist creating the film could learn something.

The 1st movie, there was a reason for him backhanding her. He said he had been calling her for over an hour. Mr. wasn't that type of person who waited for his wife to finish what she was doing. Celie needed to be available for all his bidding. Her not being immediately available was his reasoning.

The only reason Whoopi did not get the Oscar was because The Academy gave the award to Geraldine Page for the lackluster, Trip To Bountiful. The Academy is notorious for giving awards to older actors or for their body of work. Page had been nominated before and this was probably her last film. I just noticed a mistake in the original film, Celie is holding the knife in her right hand when Whoopi is left-handed. There are several scenes where Celie is using her left hand. Sadly, this was the great Louis Gossett Jr's last movie.

the 1985 version of Fixin to Shave Mr was better than the 2023 version of Fixin to Shave Mr
bcuz the Celie on the 1985 version was cold & calculated and fed up
while the Celie on the 2023 version was afraid and hesitant
besides the 2023 version of Fixin to Shave Mr was the scene from the 1985 version of the Color Purple
when Celie was shaving Mr the first time and when the Mailman saved Celie from getting back handed by Mr after she had cut by accident when the Mailman closed the Mailbox
that's where the 2023 version of Fixin to Shave Mr came from

37:00 I feel like it’s fair for some people to not want to watch those type of movies anymore.
I’m a younger person, but I grew up watching the Color Purple (1985), Django, 12 Years a Slave, all of that stuff. But over time, it can get really exhausting. Even my older family members get tired of seeing those types of movies, not necessarily because of the fact that we’re ashamed of our history. We KNOW who, where, and what we came from, but because of that fact that we know, it can be almost painful to be constantly reminded. My grandmother, who was there to witness the civil rights movement, said herself that she feels that all of these movies almost only portrays us in that light, and instead of portraying us in the now.
That’s why films like black panther (which came out recently, and talks about slavery and African diaspora) was well received by a LOT of people, because it acknowledges and addresses the painful history of African Americans, but establishes positive changes to the now ( e.g. Tchalla and Shuri coming to American and building the bridge between Wakanda and African American Communities)

    Hey, I'll say this.
The reason why they panned through the rite of passage and Celie about to "shave" Mister was because, in her own way, she was finally going through her own rite of passage. After getting slapped by the man who went to lengths to hide her sister's letter for maybe 30 years and the decades of physical, emotional and spiritual abuse, she finally snapped and found that her value was no longer in the hands of Mister. Her attempt to kill him was her first attempt at retribution. When Suge saved him, she knew then that it wasn't her path to take. The worst pain to deal was a reality check and loneliness... And that's exactly what she gave in place of ridding this world of the evil Mister.
