    Fun fact….in the beginning when Netty is saying why….i saw in an interview the reason the scene hit so deep is because wen mister was trying to separate them he was really hitting the actresses hands on the tree and it was painful….the director told Danny Glover to just separate them however he can and the actress who played Netty was crying why because of that

    In the book, Mister simply said that Nettie had to go cause she wouldn’t give it up. There was no drama at all. She packed her bags and left. The attempted sexual assault didn’t occur until after she moved out in route to school in the woods if I recall.

    Love Halle, but honestly her "Nothing but death can keep me from it" had no emotion behind it at all. It sounded too scripted. Even though we know the movie is scripted, the audience is supposed to feel like the characters are real and existing naturally. I don't mean any harm, but that line was delivered in a high school theatre club fashion.

    Both scenes do something to the heart and soul but I think the newer version of this scene was much more intense. It being a rainy night, him having a gun, it just added more to the intensity and drama of that scene. And the fact that what triggered this was that she didn’t want to have sex with him is even more upsetting. This was how life was like for so many young black girls in the south during that time. Imagine being a literal 14 year old child, and you have no other choice but to live with a man old enough to be your daddy, and one night he tries to rape you? He threatens your life, you run away and have literally nowhere to go. Smh so sad
    The part where Nettie ran away and he points the gun at Celie, my heart dropped. That shit was so scary

      I agree! I actually liked Halle's acting in this scene as well. It was so intense, all of it. I get the comparisons to the old film, however I definitely believed they did it justice as their own adaptation. I do agree with the content creators that the scene felt quick, but honestly it was so intense, I wouldn't have wanted it to be longer.

    I hate to say this but the 1985 version benefitted by having a white male director. Spielberg being a white male has less reservations about how he wanted to direct the portrayal of black men on screen. I can imagine it being tougher for a black man to direct this same intense portrayal. I hope this doesn’t get read wrong but I believe the 2023 version was done too nice. I personally know that not all Black men are Mister, some are Harpo and some are Buster and some are Grady right. There were so many black male charters with a bunch of different personalities. Mister is highlighted because Celie is highlighted. Just as there’s many male personalities there’s many women personalities in this film. And we get to see them all. It just so happen that this story is written from the perspective of Celie and her experiences and Mister is one. I’m grateful to have lived in a time to witness both films and read the book to better understand what all the artist involved were offering. Grateful to Alice Walker for writing such an outstanding and amazing book. All that said I wish for a time that all Black directors and writers of all genders are open to freely writing and directing Black characters that are multi dimensional.

    get off mah land !! 😅😅😅 .. I thought this scene out and I think if Nettie had gave Mister some good loving , that would have brought her time. the separation of Nettie/Celie reminds me of the trans Atlantic slave trade, sisters ( Africans ) being sold off, put on slave ships and brought to a new world . the irony is Nettie took the slave trade in reverse and ended up in Africa , and at the hands of a black man dressed as an overseer ... that's a whole discussion right there

    Full circle moment for Mister, as Nettie uses her two fingers to declare that nothing but death and keep me from writing. Then when Celie leaves Mister she uses those same two fingers to bring him into submission that everything that he had done was going to be done to him. The truth came full circle when she discovered all those letters!
    The 2023 took an easier route in drama by making it dark and rainy and by giving Mister a gun. It was something to see something so horrific happen in the daylight in the 1985 version

  • @Ms_Erica
    @Ms_Erica 6 месяцев назад +1

    The first one to me was more of a shock. We already know what is coming. The director is also not the only one that chooses which takes will go in the film. The studio plays a huge part in that too. It's hard to compare the musical which follows the book more than the original film. As far as these two scenes I like that it was done at night which flows with the scenes after it. The 1985 version separation was more emotional than this one. The 2023 version was trying to shed more light on the story from the book and not be as negative. Alice Walker herself was on set and loved the direction of the 2023 version. There are sooo many untold stories from the book that neither film mentions. I like that the 2023 version touches on some of these untold stories. There's room for both versions as well as future versions. The real winner is Alice Walker for writing a great book!

    In my opinion, the 2023 Netty is out of Era. 2023 Netty feels like a modern 2023 woman. This is how a woman walking in NY in the modern day would flirt with a man . I was waiting for her to say " boy bye" the whole time. Also, her wardrobe and makeup don't help. They made Netty appear older , cleaner , prettier, and above Celie in every way. They do not come off as being sisters to me.

    I liked both versions, the 1985 version definitely takes the cake tho, I remember when I younger I was honestly afraid to fully watch the movie, I had seen some scenes here and there, like the separation scene and I just never wanted to see the movie cuz it looked depressing, which it is, but also very beautiful as well, but I finally watched it a few years ago once I was an adult and it’s such a heart wrenching film, one of my favorite Whoopi Goldberg films, everyone was amazing and I was balling the whole time, I watched the 2023 version recently while staying at a hotel, I didn’t hate it, I liked everyone’s performance, I was like 30 min maybe when I put it on so I didn’t see much of Halle, but I honestly didn’t hate it, I’m a musical lover so I don’t love all the songs or remember them but I had a few I really enjoyed, a highlight performance for me was Oprah’s character, I thought she was wonderful, my main complaint is I felt because they had to have time for songs the regular scenes that were so iconic in the original felt rushed, like how do we get to this scene so we can put a song here mentality, but I honestly liked it still

    It is my opinion that the significance of Oliver Twist was that Nettie may now live what she has been reading as entertainment. It is now her reality, being an orphan having to fend for herself like Oliver Twist. The book signifies the injustice and exploitation by Mister at a different level. Dragging this child out of her safe space with Celie to be on her own with nowhere to go - and she is still a child.

    Fact checking Heit… Yes, the original Nettie and John Singleton (RIP) were married and they have an adult daughter. Fun fact: The actress who played Nettie is a real life African Princess.
    Hands down the original was better than the 2023 version. The whole 1985 version had knots in my throat because it was a drama, but because the 2023 version was a music, I think that it took away from the dramatic vibe and made it more uplifting and jovial through song and dance. Film Is 'Show more than Tell' & reading between the lines of what's not said & shown.. which is deflee why the 1985 one is a Better Film, specifically from the Directors point.. & i certainly don't like Haileys delivery of 'Nothing But Death Could Keep Me From It' 😂😭

  • @lasirenas1
    @lasirenas1 6 месяцев назад

    Netty is reading and education will not only help her get out her situation but we are inspired by the stories we read in books. Oliver Twist book dropping to the ground was a poetic way of foreshadowing the road that both sisters would have to overcome. Being orphaned in a cruel world that they can hopefully rise above. Oliver Twist is relatable to Netty and hopefully that story fuels her fight. To be honest, I read Carole Kings book, and I saw the 1985 movie which did a great job with the seriousness of the subject matter. A musical just didn’t make sense to me and I could be wrong but it doesn’t interest me. There was no reason to re do it in my opinion.

  • @liza4bz

    In my opinion the 1985 version built the relationship between Celie and Nettie MUCH better. The idea of separation "forever "is important because subliminally, you know Nettie has nowhere to go but she can't stay there.

    Nettie and Mister. In the book Nettie is mildly interested in Mister______. Hes distinguished, older, and rich. Thats why Mister asked Alphonso to marry her, they had been making eyes at each other.
    One of the problems with Mister was that his wife wasn't long dead and she had been murdered by HER lover coming home from church.
    Also of note Mister loves dark skin women with long hair. Celie had the skin but not the hair. Nettie had both. And so did his furst wife and Shug.

    Oliver Twist. We tend not to think of Nettie and Celie as orphans. But, indeed they are. And the injustices of Charles Dickens to be overwrought and exaggerated. Dickensian means exaggerated suffering. But it's not exaggerated. Suffering like Oliver or Nicolas or Pip experienced are right next door. Or in our family trees.

    POETICAL!!! This movie was not!😂😂psych, JK!! I liked it for the musical it is but won’t watch it again. In my opinion they tried so hard to not duplicate the original they ended up taking out the heart of the story…
    1. You show is ugly
    2. Fixin to give Mista a shave
    3. Nothing but death can keep me from it
    4. God is tryna tell you something, night now right now right now
    5. I may be black, I maybe ugly BUT I’M HERE……
    The only part they did get right was Sophia and I’m sure Harpo, OOPS Oprah made sure of that!!!!

    I appreciate the comparison but it is very hard to watch your videos because of the repetitiveness of the scenes. 43 minutes of the same scene over and over kills the joy and the initial interest.

    The hand games would be considered "Pat - A - Cake"', or "Patty - Cake" hand clapping games that little black girls play.. Google "Pat - A - Cake" it will tell you the etymology and origins of the song and hand clapping games..

    • @HeitCheri
      @HeitCheri  6 месяцев назад

      So you're saying that the Black community officially calls these games by the name of a single song? That's really what Heit was asking.
      For instance, we used to play a hand game called Slide and we used to say, "Let's play Slide." So we called the game by the name of the song we sang. But we are looking for the name of this category of games...

    • @covertLLC
      @covertLLC 6 месяцев назад

      @@HeitCheri i used to play slide, Ms. Mary Mat, and a few others, and yes they are all pat - a -cake / patty cake hand games because you're patting your hands together. Who's stopping to remember the name of every hand clapping game when they all are clearly based on patting hands??
      Children that play those games remember the names of specific games in order to play with their friends. Adults that no longer play them call them pat - a - cake / patty - cake because that's the category of game they are.. We call Clue, and monopoly board games, and we call games played on a Nintendo or X Box video games, because that's tne specific category of games they are. Adults that no longer play those games aren't going to specifically name the individual game being played, they will most likely just name the category of games they see children playing..

    • @covertLLC
      @covertLLC 6 месяцев назад

      Also patty cake isn't usually played by older children once they learn to play "hand clapping / patting" games. Mothers usually play patty cake with their babies during the late infancy, early toddler stage, so it's usually the first game of that type kids learn to play. When you played "Slide , or "A Sailor Went To Sea" with your friends, was "Patty Cake" ever one of the songs you sang when playing with friends your same age?? If patty cake was one of your go to games plz excuse my ignorance.
      It's my understanding that "Patty Cake" is a game that most people would understand the premise of, so if you say the girls are playing a "Patty Cake" game most people will immediately understanding what kind of game is being played. If you were to say the girls are playing "Slide", if the person you're talking to isn't familiar with the game "Slide" they wouldn't necessarily know what you're talking about. . "Patty Cake" is the "Kleenex" or the "Crock Pot" of the hand clapping / patting games..
      People that have never played "Slide" wouldn't know that it's more about counting hand claps and not making a mistake in the game than it is sliding. The game got it's name from the first action of sliding your hands with the person you're playing the game with. To my mind it only makes sense that the first game of that type that kids learn to play would be used to categorize that entire genre of games. I hope that made sense.
      There are many hand clapping games that I've never heard of and wouldn't know by name specifically, but if you were to tell me it's a "Patty Cake" game I would know exactly what you meant. People that never saw the 1st Color Purple movie wouldn't know that "Maki DaDa" was a patty cake game at all. I had never heard the name of that one until I saw Celie and Nettie playing it in the movie. I'm not trying to be a know it all, I'm just trying to get the point across as logically and descriptive as I possibly can.. So "Patty Cake" would be the generic descriptor for all games of the like.. All bandages aren't band aids, but all band aids are bandages.

    As a kid my miscommunication and understanding of The color purple was Mr just wanted a wife. It wasn't that he wanted a wife he wanted what his father presented to him as someone who would take care of him no matter what he does he want to complete control over her. I really don't comprehend a logic but when I was with my first baby daddy he treated me the same way and at the end of the day he was still messing around with multiple women and I wasn't what he wanted I was just trophy enough for him I think this will be made me realize it's not about looks it's really about personality and Seeley was beautiful in every way shape or form she just had a piece of s*** husband
