  • Legendary movie director Steven Spielberg has never been shy about exploring Jewish themes in his movies, like “An American Tail”, “Schindler’s List”, “Munich”, and “The Fablemans”. However, it is little known that even his movies that are not explicitly about Jews, like “Jaws”, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”, and “ET”, also touch on themes of Jewish identity.

Your comment on debate in Judaism is so important. The Talmud includes the arguments of the most unpopular ideas as well as those highly respected, and that is wonderful. It might not change anyone's opinion, but the debate is so important. 'Don't keep quiet' seems to be one of our greatest attributes.

His first movie, "Duel" is less well known, (but very good). The theme could be summarised as "the implacable, anonymous pursuer". An innocent motorist is threatened by a semi-trailer, which keeps manoeuvring with the obvious intention of killing him. We only ever see the semi driver's boots, and the intention seems more inherent in the truck. A spot of academic word-spinning could generate several narratives from that.

What a great video! My master thesis in history was about jewish identity in American films. Spielberg was not part of the research (too obvious), but a lot of what you say is very much true for other jewish American directors too. Coming to terms with generational trauma and your own identity is all part of making art.

The movies symbolize the things the American Jew went through and the sense of a perceived need to assimilate or melt with the gentile world for survival. They also remind us that in reality, there is more power and respect in embracing our individuality, and standing for ourselves with love for our own and pride in our Jewishness.

      There's nothing wrong being Jewish..
      I was born in a country where i belonged to a sub-minority.
I know how it feels, i know what we have to overcome.
And we can do it with grace, talking endlessly with the other side, searching for our azimute..
But it's all wrong, when you support this Israel Savagery..
That´s not human, not carefull, not wise..
Israel, right now, can be compared to a 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' or Saramago's book 'Blindness'...
How a civilized country, full of intelligent people, falls into darkness...
and nobody seems capable to avoid it...

@violoncelo1000 Taking a pacifist approach towards adversaries that desire our demise is not only not a Jewish concept, it is begging for an end. The world deeply has sympathy for us when we are dying but we lose the approval of the non-Jew when we immediately respect ourselves by not taking the abuse and refusing to lay down. It is better to have self-respect and live than to be a doormat to the gentile and be a loved little obedient lemming to the gentile.

I think Spielberg now needs to do a movie that can have undertones of teaching kids of this generation that hate of Jews and hate of anyone is horrible and how we need to live in peace and harmony in this world. My mother, b 1921 Strasbourg barely escaped France, walking on foot across the Pyrenees Mt into Spain with a guide to run from the Nazis. My youngest son in high school experienced antisemitism with bodily injury in hate crime. We must teach

As a Christian myself, I have never understood antisemitic libel that Jews invented Communism or Jews are Communists. Communism is an atheistic ideology, & Jews are a religious group (an ethnographic-religious group, yes; but a religious group, all the same). Therefore, creating an atheistic political ideology would be a self-defeating purpose.

I very honestly had a slightly similar experience as a child(1:20). I was perhaps 8 years old, and my school had a "field trip" to a nearby nursing home and we just chilled with them a bit, sang some music and talked to them. I think atleast one or 2 of them thought I was their grandkid lol.
I saw a few of those tattoos on some of the peoples' arms. I did not fully understand what that meant at the time. Same idea: "they were just some chill af old people with numbers on their arms".

You think Jews actually care about religion, maybe go pick up a bible and read how the Israelites disobeyed God habitually from the very beginning with them worshipping a golden calf mere minutes after God split the Red Sea for them. Karl Marx was a Jew, Lenin and Trotsky and the Bolsheviks were Jews - they invented Communism it’s a fact not some conspiracy theory

  • @bradhorowitz2765

I think from a. More cynical viewpoint, Spielberg is very good at creating wholesome entertainment family movies that don’t exactly have a “controversial” ring to it or that deviate too far from mainstream movies. They are safe and nostalgic with more or less the same themes he’s. Even doing for his whole career. Men mostly tske up the screen time, something about fathers, a lack of political critique, a love for nostalgia, and standard Hollywood biographies. . Like I don’t see him making a Tarantino movie anymore. I don’t see him doing a Francis ford Coppola experiment movies.
Ready player one is indicative of where Spielberg is at this point; never deviating away from his expected storytelling ideas-nostalgia, begin g to rely on special effects over actual effects, a male hero. . I know someone will say “Schindler’s list” as a controversial film (and it is to an extent) but many critics point out some of the issues with that film. It’s not even the best Holocaust film (god it feels weird saying that). I mean have you not seen COME AND SEE?
A good video that goes over the evolution of Indiana jones (one of the great adventure stories ever), talked on how the series progressed it became “cleaner,” there was less of that edge from the first two. That’s because temple of doom scarred Spielberg so much to not go all out on gore, something a more ambitious director would never do.
So the success comes down to making films that are great and entertaining for the masses. But you can argue that they are jsut that. Easy money making products that give you your moneys worth and that’s that.

Sure, Jesus of Nazareth was a Jew, but he is the outsider, is persecuted, dies & ressurrects before saying good-byr to his friends & ascends to heaven in a spaceship. Dear Host, To you, "An American Tail" is about assimilation and denying one's Jewishness, but that is not how "An American Tail" was for me! In fact, I'd agrue "An American Tail" was about in fact the opposite of assimilation and denying one's Jewishness! Cause for me, "An American Tail" which is Don Bluth film, was about finding family, community and being proud of one's Jewishness! In a world of mostly Jewish stories being about The Holocaust, "An American Tail" is one of those Jewish stories that focuses on the telling of The Cossacks which is what my family survived and "An American Tail" gives those of us who aren't Holocaust Descentants representation in the Jewish Story! For me, "An American Tail" was so much more than a childhood movie. For me Fievel was so much more than just a Jewish Mouse 🐁 It was a movie that was a telling of my family, of their struggles, and their preserverance, and Fievel, well, he was my friend, and a part of me saw myself in Fievel, but mostly Fievel was someone that I felt could understand me both as a Jew living in the U.S and as a kid feeling alone and isolated, Fievel was everything that I wanted, that I'd hope to be! Not only that, he had a cat as his best friend and my only friend as a young child was a cat! Even to this day, I cling onto my Fievel Plush when I feel sad alone, or even scared, because Fievel was me as a kid and he is the only one that calm my inner child! So, again, dear Host, I'd argue that "An American Tail" was about assimilation and shamefulness cause that is not how it was for me!!
I don't think I could really ever explain to you here in the comment section what "An American Tail" means to me or the feeling that I have for the movie, all I can say is that "An American Tail" is my favorite Childhood Movie and Fievel is my best friend!

I'm so glad that when I saw Jaws, at age 9 or so in a big theater, I associated the shark with ---as a metaphor--a SHARK! That movie made me too scared to get out of bed in the middle of the night because of anything lurking in the dark (no other move has ever done that). I still think of that movie as being representative of--great White Sharks who do eat people (i.e. in Australia). If I want to see a movie representing Nazis or white supremacists, I will watch ANIMAL FARM and observe the pigs. I would take the horse that got betrayed as being the Jews (the smart, reasonable animals trying to have a decent grounded society but who got sold to a glue factory by the pigs who gobbled as much as they could, thusly turning into the pig monster human beings who then turned into Nazis. Actually, Nazis attribute Sharks to one of their predator symbols, in addition to Lions. Poor, misrepresented animals. THey are just pigs after all. Maybe Spielberg will one day make a movie about Nazis as the symbolic representation that they truly are: pigs.

Ashkenazi screenwriters do like to self-insert themselves as aliens, especially technologically advanced aliens, either to lead or destroy humans. Same for Slasher films. The Ashkenazi screenwriters get a little powertrip over depicting blonde women getting brutally killed by the outsider monster/killer. They have contempt for the white American culture they live in and you can see it in most films.
Many iconic films are celebrating triumphs over the American populations, themes creatively depicted.
