- With regards to the holiday of Hanukkah, while most everyone knows about the Maccabees’ victory over the mighty Seleucid Greek Empire and the subsequent miracle of the menorah oil lasting for 8 days, less known are the parts of the story that involve Jewish power struggles, religious oppression, civil war, and a political alliance with Rome. Even though the “good guys” aren’t all good, Hanukkah remains a celebration of resilience, beating the odds, and standing up for one’s beliefs.

I am not Jewish a bit, however, every video on that channel is a treasure of culture ! Thanks a lot and so, Happy Hanukkah.
Not Jewish, but I wish a happy hannukah to those who are, wherever they may be
Thank you!
Thank you
Hanukkah is the only Jewish Holiday I celebrate, in fact my non-jewish mother made my Secular Jewish Father celebrate Hanukkah so I stay grounded in my Jewish Heritage ✡️ but after my parents slipt, my dad stop celebrating Hanukkah and wasn't until adulthood that I started celebrating it, now every year Hanukkah keeps me connected, for 8 days I feel as though I am 100% Jewish, completely Jewish! Hanukkah was the only thing I had as a kid to keep me connected to my Jewish roots. Now, Hanukkah is the only thing that reminds me that I am Jewish, I spend so much time pretending that I am not. Hanukkah isn't just a holiday it is the only thing I had for my entire life that kept close to the Jewish People, my people!
happy hanukkah from israel
@el00021 Thanks, and you as well
I can 100% relate to you on this. I am 1/4 Jewish. My (mothers mother) Ashkenazi Jewish grandmother immigrated to the US from Israel in 1945 and ended up marrying and having kids with a white American guy (my grandfather).. and so Hanukkah was the one Jewish tradition that we celebrated every year that kept us all reminded that we were Jewish. So Im Right there with you on that ✡️✡️
@@adamdudley8736if your mother's mother is Jewish, your not ¼ Jewish, you are 100% Jewish
@RafaelRabinovich nope, I am Jewish on my dad's side, my father's mother converted so technically I am half Jewish, however, I don't see it that way!
Chag Sameach my resilient people!!! 💖
Chag Hannukkah Sameach!!
As a Jew it is only when I grew up I heard the real story on Hannukah and I fell in love with it.
Lovely video man ❤ I loved how you connected the maccabees to today
I was already familiar with the historical details, but this is by far the most enjoyable version of the story I've ever heard. Kudos for explaining this complicated saga in an accurate yet entertaining manner.
I wish my aunt and her family happy haukka every year. Now I can understand it's importance to them.
Happy Haukka everyone from Mobile Alabama USA
Chanukah Sameach from the UK. ❤
Achi, this is incredible. thank you.
Glad you like it!
SUGGESTION: As the war against Hamas is going on, you could do a show on the story of Samson, which takes place in Gaza and the fight was against the Philistines....(a group Hamas wants to take credit for). Most people only know the movie.
Wait, Samson fought in Gaza😅?
@@blaizesibande6634 He was held captive and died in Gaza.
As a Catholic, I truly admire the bravery of the Maccabees. We even venerate them as saints and include their Books in our Bible. They made Judaism and Christianity alive and well today through their sacrifices.
Hanukkah was the first Jewish holiday my wife and celebrated years ago. It's a minor holiday, sure, but it's also a lot of fun. We play board games and watch movies, and just enjoy each other's company. It's no different than a normal day, really, except we have a Menorah in the window.
Shalom aleichem and Happy Chanukah 🥳🕎 ❤
I really enjoyed this, definitely will be sharing this amazing moment of history. Thank you!
Happy Hannukah everyone from North Texas!
This is a very good over view with great film clips. It's a story, really, about the fight against assimilation. In the Book of the Maccabees (not part of the orthodox canon) it tells how some Jews were so desperate to fit into Hellenized society that they attempted to have their circumcisions reversed. Now that sounds painful and I doubt it really works.
Spoiler: it didn't
@@chasers23 and you know that, how?
Note that circumcision has changed since then because of those people. We now perform "priah" (פריעה) to make that impossible.
@@BlainEnoch its STILL impossible . You cant grow a foreskin.
You can get "pumps" that stretch the skin back to "reverse" a circumcision and it's actually used by more folk than would expect so it can work but it's not easy and centuries ago I suspect it wasn't that simple
I wish I could’ve learned Jewish history like this way back in Hebrew school. I would’ve paid more attention.
Hanukkah is my favourite holiday and right now it has a special significance both in terms of overcoming vicious peoples and putting a focus on the light i.e. tzedekah. Am Israel Chai and Chag Sameach!
Hope in GOD, when Israel seeks and honors GOD, they are often abundantly blessed, & those who bless Israel are thus blessed! Shabbat Shalom❤ Happy Hanukkah
Had a ccd teacher as a child as a Catholic. She was the 1st person to introduce me to Hanukkah & gave me my 1st WORD of GOD❤ Didn't realize then but a great deal of what she taught & practiced was Jewish ❤ Left the catholic church at 13, thankfully my Mom did too! And have been seeking a personal relationship with ELOHIM & YESHUA HAMACHIACH & that has adopted me into being a jew!❤ Met Corrie Ten Boom in First grade when she came to our classroom, & the holocaust was a subject my Mom always studied & taught us about! Spent my life absolutely loving the stories of when GOD really shows up & delivers HIS people! I love the story of Daniel, & it is my grandson's favorite book, as well as name. Tee hee! I also love the story of Jeremiah & others who faced all opposition by seeking GOD first & not following man, but speaking up when GOD called him to!❤ This story/history of Hanukkah is much deeper than most realize & reminds us to repent & turn from all fleshly evil ways! GOD bless & keep you & yours❤ And GOD BLESS ISRAEL 🇮🇱 ❤ HAPPY HANUKKAH ❤🎉🇮🇱❤️. Praying for VICTORY in this present day war & attack on GOD'S CHOSEN ❤
Happy Hanukkah all.... May the spirit of the maccabees prevail In the task at hand! I pray for all those brave and fearless protectors of Israel in this time! Baruch Hashem 🇮🇱 ✡️ 🇮🇱
Guys im sorry when I was younger I had a bad experience with 2 Jewish kids in my school and held a grudge yesterday a rabbi invited me to the menorah lighting and was treated great I broke down crying because I felt bad because I held a grudge for so long and they also invited me to the Sabbath dinner they gave me a menorah from Israel... the first day of the lighting it was at a library and we had those powder doughnuts and this fried this I seen it in the start of the video they put apple sauce on it eberyone there were so nice again I'm sorry

I am a Catholic and The Macabbees story has always been my favorite.... I remember during the Helenization time an Elder was told instead of eating pork to pretend to eat pork and he downright refused... I see that as a strength we lack in our lives most times... we are victims to sin of scandal
Stay in the light .
I had recently read that Ant.IV got mad and feeling betrayed started the persecution as revenge. But the part of a political alliance with Rome was an interesting revelation. What is next is that disputes went on amongst jews as Cohanim were not supposed to rule. And there was corruption 😢
Great last thought! Thank you.
Amen!
Have a great Hanukkah
Well done ❤
Amazing video. Thank you so much it made me laugh ❤❤ happy Hanukkah babes
Thank you! Happy Hanukkah!

The commercialization really bothers me
Well done!
as an israeli, this was pretty accurate! thank you!
Happy Hanukkah !!!🍩🍩🍩🕍🏺🕎🔯
Great vid
Thanks for adding actual captions for the Deaf.
You had me at the Jelly donuts.
Happy Hanukkah 🕎 ❤
Happy Hanukkah!!!
If one wanted to be uncharitable, the story might be classified as a case of religious terrorism. but a more detailed history probably has a lot of nuances. Celebrating a foreign religion is one thing, but taking over somebody else;s temple is a step too far.
I noticed Chanukah had coloured candles but shabbat has white I may be wrong but its what I have seen can you explain why that is
HAPPY HANUKKAH 🕎🕎🕎
What's the best recipe for latkes I heard there's two different kinds?
Check out our article about latkes here! jewishunpacked.com/wine-salty-cheese-and-a-beheading-the-brief-history-of-the-latke/
@@UNPACKED thank you I was invited to the lighting of the menorah and had them and I could of ate all of them
another thing is that miracle of the oil isn't about keeping up with Jewish law as when the Maccabees retook the temple it was already desecrated for 2 years but the miracle is a sign from god that the war is just and so is the struggle.
i know this involves a different religion, but there are more than a few similarities and corruptions that involve chanukkah.
antiochus iv was called epiphanes, or the revealed. a play on that name in hebrew is epimines, or the madman.
epiphany is the christian celebration of what they believe is the revelation of jesus as the messiah to the magii on the 12th day of christmas, 6 jan (i'm not making the proclamation, only stating their belief)
some celebrate epiphany with a dip in an ice bath.
the polar bear plunge is closely timed with epiphany.
for that matter, christmastide itself is timed closely with a collection of celebrations centered around winter solstice, even though jesus was more likely born during sukkot.
chanukkah is about combating outside influences on judaism. SO WHAT IS THIS HANUKAH BUSH NONSENSE? what next? will we anchor the date to the gregorian calendar so that it rarely begins on the 25th of kislev?
as topol said (as the character tevye), one little time i pulled on a thread, and where did it lead? where has it lead? to this?
stay strong. stay true.
Sorry for lumping all Jewish ppl together out of an action of few who treated me with disrespect as kid it wasn't right of me have a rabbi invite me to a menorah lighting had great time and I feel so bad for judging all of you for the actions of a few I was also gifted a menorah from Israel it brought a tear to me changed my whole out look
Actually, Judaism was Hellenized and romanized. Ever heard of Christianity? It is literally a Greco Roman version of Judaism.
This is the most accurate statement. I always say this.
Christianity has almost nothing in common with Judaism. Even the Jewish view of God Christianity rejects. It is more accurate that Christianity is the Greco Roman version of Monotheism.
The romans also named the Israel region Palestine, that's why people call it that, what I don't get is why people worldwide are calling it that still
Didn't the Maccabes also take over the Kingship? And they were not from Yehudah, so it was inappropriate, or am I mixnig them up with someone else?
No, you’re right. They’re heroes. But they’re not perfect saints.
hanukkah is competing against chrismas?
there are not enough of us to make that a commercial success.
Xmas is mainly consumer cosplay, only a holy day for a small subset of self-identified Christians. But yes, it's very popular and commemorated globally.
Read the book Blood of the Maccabees!
I could tell right away you weren't gonna talk about that the temple was where they sacrificed people to their god.
The Jews won with a very small Army, not because of their Army but because Elohim, their G-d gave them victory.
One Law for All.
4:56 wait was I the only one who learned about it in school?
they told me about mathius killing someone.
Drop the e. It’s bc and ad
Happy Hanukkah from 🇨🇦
Dreidels were also weapons!
8:10 The story which is documented only once with those telling it having a clear agenda to downplay the Maccabean's role in the story!?
Yeah, everyone heard about that MYTH, worth debunking, however...
There is more.
The history of our people is amazing but video formats in which clips depicting our history are overlayed with images of pop culture is extremely frustrating and cheapens the experience. 10/10 narration 2/10 visuals.
Hmm, most of us light the hanukia at Hanukkah. Menorah is something else...😔
I would argue that history repeats! BUT GOD ❤🇮🇱❤️ HE who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps! 2 Chronicles 7:14 Pray, seek HIS FACE & turn from our wicked ways! ❤
Everything was great, but the myth of the oil and the eight nights has to due with the original Sukot holiday... 🐏
i wish mel gibson would've completed his mission to finish his movie about the maccabees. the passion didn't stoke antisemitism...at least not for muslims...it took us into a world we kind of already knew where objectivity was possible. he would've done the same for the maccabees. he's a big fan of "good jews". it would have changed how we see groups of that time vs the progress we've made today. i think a maccabee who was brought into the present in a time machine (with a memory update) would be pleased that these two learned to live side and side and gave each other full rights to worship as needed. today, you can say i don't eat pork and though some bug you or worst case snicker....few push a plate in front of you and say "EAT!" respect my friend, has won the people's ways.
Harrison Ford. Why would any person who isn't prejudiced support Mel Gibson?
What fo uiu mean by "good jews [sic]"?
it sounds bad but like all people, actions are judged by others not just by god. there's a phenomenon called such and is considered racist sometimes. happy hanukkah@@drdonna4915
NOT quite, while the victory was improbable and significant, violence became more normative and unproductive, modifying the story with a minor supernatural miracle was a wise move to establish behaviors more conducive to long-term survival when a minority.
What we call universal Hellenism was actually started in the land of Israel! The Israelites started worshipping Stautes of their beauty in the land. Read Ezekiel Chapter 16.
This is how I always learned it. Hanukkah is about not assimilating as Jews. That’s the point.
Too much silly Hollywood, not enough Israel. Distracting.
Am Yisrael Chai
Watching in 2023, reminds me of Hamas and terrorists now, they want to completely get rid of Jews.
The twelve virgins story of oil those who were ready for the marriage had oil and kept watch because they didn't know when He would come.
So guy's what do we do ? As a gentile repent be grafted denounce secularism stop eating pork and start obeying the commands of our creator love His ways ! Stop All religious man made rules become Israel become apart of an ambassador of Yehovah Yeshua Yoshia ! ❤
Non-Jew who celebrates Hannukah [John 10:22]
Years ago I read both books of the Maccabees, the first book was written shortly after the revolt. There is no mention of an oil miracle in either book. They celebrated the rededication of the Temple for 8 days. Why? Because a few months earlier was the holiday of Sukkot but they couldn't observe it because of the war. So to honor Sukkot along with Shemini Atzeret they celebrated the rededication of the Temple for 8 days. So why the meshugas about the oil miracle? That fable was created by the Talmudic rabbis which was about 500 years after the event. The speculation is that the rabbis didn't want to honor a holiday celebrating a war or the Hasmonean dynasty, whom were not viewed very favorably. Another thing the Hasmonean dynasty did was combine the priestly family in the Temple to the King, that is, one and the same whereas in the past they were separate entities. No separation of church and state!
My culture is literary only, Greek only, no religion.
My understanding is that the Maccabees were great warriors, but lousy administrators. A bit too theocratic for the public at large. Like you say, Hanukkah is...complicated.... Enjoy the latkes!
Am Israel Chai 🇮🇱🇮🇱🇮🇱🇮🇱
Another video gone wrong you mistold the history again.
Then don't watch.
Why does this narrator look like a Puerto Rican? lol
Messiah came the first time (Isaiah 53, Daniel 9:25-26, Psalm 22:16, Zechariah 9:9, Micah 5:2) and will soon return the second time (Zechariah 14:1-4).Yeshua Mashiach, King David’s Adonai whom YHWH speaks to in Psalm 110:1.
I'm a gay Jewish stoner for Jesus! I love Hanukkah. I celebrate from Hanukkah to Christmas. I call it Christmukkah! Now I have another 24 nights! Zechariah 14 is coming soon! Watch and pray, watch and pray! Stop playing games and watching tv all day! That's idolatry, btw.
Judah Maccabees was a man who submitted to the will of Allah, A MUSLIM who fought through Jihad for worship of one God
No he was not a Muslim
If your gonna play with names you should Remember that his name was YEHUDa not Mohammad
Won't help your cause to make everyone Muslim
allah was born around 1000 years after my friend.
@aviadshalom66 Allah(swt) is the Arabic name for Elohim, ask the Arab Jews
the clockwork orange scene, ok!!
Everything is correct except for the part about the olive oil miracle… That part was only added much later by the religious Jewish sages (Hazal) in order to add a religious aspect to this historical event with a tiny sprinkle of miracle from God. That’s the only reason why we now eat unhealthy yet super yummy deep fried oily food on Hanukkah… Thanks Hazal!!! 😂😂😂😂
my favorite hanuka song was the maccabi song where they pretty said there was no miracle here we just kicked ass. Anyone remember what is was called?
