I used to watch HHIS from 9.30pm in the earlier days of the show on at night. I lived in the Newcastle suburb of Stockton and had the antenna to pick up Sydney stations, so I was able to watch the show through *Station TCN-Sydney* John Blackman was already doing the voice of Dickie Knee at the time, even before Red Symonds and Ian Meldrum came on the scene. Gavin Wood was the music critic for the show back then and the band's drummer was nicknamed "Animal". By the early 1990s, *Station NBN-Newcastle* had picked up the show when its timeslot was brought forward to 6.30pm(Station NBN-Newcastle's weekend news bulletin was still 30 minutes back then while the weekday bulletin was 1 hour, indeed, Station NBN-Newcastle *pioneered* the 1-hour bulletin in 1972, long before any metropolitan station had even thought of doing 1-hour bulletins) By the time HHIS appeared on Station NBN-Newcastle, Gavin Wood was gone, Ian Meldrum was in place and the "Red Faces" segment was more formalised. Chook-lotto was gone, replaced by Plucka-Duck, and the "Great Aussie Joke" with Shane Bourne and the late Maurie Fields was a regular segment. Saturday evening TV was great *BACK THEN!* but today it's *shithouse!*
Yes I remember watching it at the 9:30 pm till midnight time slot. It was a lot more risqué and used to get away with a lot more. I remember that being around 1985, I couldn’t believe what they got away with !
Iconic man . Quick witted & always waiting for his comments or one liners on Hey Hey it’s Saturday which always had me laughing . Another legend gone but will never be forgotten . RIP John & give ‘em hell in heaven .
I remember John Blackman on the Paul Hogan Show watching as a child . You don’t forget such a talented person and fun . We need more people like him in this world. Hey Hey it’s Saturday was the best .. I miss Melbournes channel 9 live entertainment. Very sad loss of John Blackman 😢
WW you are too modest you were all part of the Hey Hey team, enjoy the memories of the good. times, you were all definitely part of many Saturday Evening shifts during. the 80s - thanks and fond farewell to the very quick witted JB.
Really sad to hear that John blackman has passed away. ❤️ the angel was me fav I 🤔 Ernst Carroll passed away too not long ago - voice of ossie. Both gave me me sense of humour. Good bye ossie ostrich- what a silly bird, a silly silly bird....we ❤️ ossie ostrich ostrich..
Sorry...but I for one could do without Hinch's nauseating hypocrisy. He was utterly and quite unnecessarily abusive towards John during the "radio wars" of the '86/87 period.
Was listening to him on Sam Newman’s podcast just a few weeks ago. Will give Keep Smilin’ with Daryl & Ossie another spin and be grateful. RIP John. Condolences to his family.
Such a quick, witty mind.

@@Tex_Symbol69 What *utterly ruined* HHIS was that *UTTER MORON,* Russell Gilbert. I wish the *NEVER* brought him onto the show.

A GREAT LOSSJOHN WAS ONE
FUNNY MAN. HE HAS BEEN
A LOSS TO AUSTRALIAN TV
CHEERS
Woke would have cancelled him today in 5 seconds. Humour is banned in Australia.
You have to die to be on TV
