- Sir Alex Ferguson and Ally McCoist were among those paying tribute to former Rangers, Scotland and Everton manager Walter Smith at a public memorial service in Glasgow.
Smith was on Ferguson’s coaching teams for a spell at both Manchester United and Scotland while McCoist spent years playing under his mentor before assisting him for both Scotland and Rangers.
A private family funeral was held earlier this month following Smith’s death at the age of 73, but the service at Glasgow Cathedral allowed many football figures to remember their former colleague and opponent.

Total Respect, to a true Gentleman who devoted his life to football , RIP SIR Walter Smith, Gone but never forgotten, Always in our Hearts.
It is rude to type in capitals.
@@riboid sorry mate apologises, l will take it down and re wite it 👍
@@riboid how's that ?
This is just my Dad, Walter i love you like my dad. God Bless & Respect. Xx
RIP WALTER AS A CELTIC FAN TOTALLY UNDERSTAND THAT YOU WERE GREAT FOR SPFL.. AND MORE.. THANKS FOR YOUR PART
MAKING OLD GAMES ICONIC REAL RESPECT FROM STIX xXx
Ooh, look at me, I am Sandra Dee.
Good for you, for having the decency to come out and say something like that.
It means all the more that even the Celtic fans are able to acknowledge what an outstanding person he was.
Far too many people who call themselves football fans would never ever be able to do that.
Respect.🤝👍
Fitting to see so many legends going to pay tribute to another legend, R.I.P Walter smith. 🔴⚪🔵
Nicely put mate word perfect 👏👏👏👏👍
so many legends yet craig levien was there why
Really nice to see a
Memorial service for
Walter Smith ,
We don't get many services today in these dreadful crazy last few years in a upside down world of confusion,,
🙏🙏🙏🙏 Rest in peace
Walter,,🙏🙏🙏🙏
The amount of legends in the one place is off the charts. Just shows you what a fantastic man sir Walter is. I say is because he will live on forever.💚💙
Just like Freddie Mercury, he's only really gone if you forget him.
However he left so many outstanding memories that I don't really see that happening, not anytime soon.
Great turn out for a great man, and manager. From a Celtic fan.
RIP Walter from a Villa fan, a true football man but above all a gent, a husband, a father, a grandfather and a legend.
Thanks Adam 👍
A who's who of Scottish football. Sadly it takes such a sad occasion to bring them all together. RIP a true gentleman & legend of our game.
Condolences to the family, Utmost respect for this man, formidable on the field of play and a true gentleman of off it, old fashioned morales, values a true legend.
Feeling my age watching my hero's pay their respects.
Rest easy sir.
what a well respected and loved man......rip..
That was a proper who's who of Scottish football.
Apart from Strachan, Ferguson and his wife who were the rest ?
@@dicksmall7976 Richard Gough, Craig Levein & Duncan Ferguson.
@@dicksmall7976 John Greig, Archie Knox, Craig Brown, Richard Gough, Ally McCoist, Darren Fletcher
Unless my eyes decieved me, i was very disapointed not to see Graeme souness in attendance.
Neil Lennonn showed up despite the so called hatred between rangers n celtic supporters. That's respect Neil showing up
Neil Lennon is a good guy mate. Mc Coist has always said that, and that's good enough for me.
@@YARROWS9 well said mate 👍 Rangers, Celtic = Respect.
Love Aly mccoist what a guy what a player he was for rangers . He's just a good guy a guy u would love to have a pint with . That's coming from me an irish man celtic wld be our team to support in Scotland the Republic of Ireland we more Catholic so to speak thsts just the way it is obviously its different Northern ireland . @@martinkelleher5662 Well said Martin. Rangers, Celtic and Manchester United. Imo the 3 biggest institutions in world football. RIP Sir Walter.
The gentleman of Glasgow rangers never forgotten should be sir Walter

RIP Walter. Everton F.C.
So sad to lose such a great man. I think Archie Knox's face said it all.
GBNF you Walter. 🙏⚽💙
What you'd give to hear even half these lads stories.

The amount of players that played for our two great clubs. Not just the Archibald Leitch criss/Cross on our stands. RIP Walter - gentleman to the end.
God bless him x
Nice to see Peter Lawell and the Celtic contingent being there paying their respects
You could make a hell of a over 40s team out of that lot with Sir Alex managing
Nice to see the heirrach of Scottish football turn out for a legend In sir Walter R I P big man thanks for our success x W A T P
Gem of a turnout for a gem of a guy.
Jimmy bell and Walter form is temporary class is permanent.
A true great of Scottish football, RIP Walter (northern spurs)
Lots of great footballers past and present there and fergie also there and big dunc RIP sir Walter
Sad to see how some of the ex-players have aged so much. Hardly recognized some of them. Time flies by...
What I wanted to know was, where were Paul Gascoigne, Graeme Souness and David Murray?
You obviously had Knox, McCoist, Sir Alex, Neil Doncaster, Strachan, Lennon, Charlie Miller, Kenny Miller, Darren Fletcher, Gough, Goram, Trevor Steven, Lawwell, Hateley, Tavernier, Donald Park and Stewart Robertson, McInnes, Duncan Ferguson and several others but I would have thought those 3 I have mentioned would have made an effort to try and be there.
Noticed a few ex players there. Not sure if I recognised all of them. Nice to see Jelavic and Papac. Both great servants with Walter at Rangers
I know Doncaster was there to show respect, but I'd rather he stayed as far away from anything Rangers related as possible. God bless you Walter and thanks for all the memories.
Stuart McColl has had the same haircut since birth.
Happy birthday sir Alex once a ger always a ger.
Fitting to see so many legends turn up for the legend Walter. Was Gazza there? Just wondering since his name was mentioned in so many funny anecdotes.
They are just made up stories by Ally McCoist to impress upon everybody that he and Gascoigne were best mates.
@@dicksmall7976 It wasn't just Ally mentioning Gazza at the memorial, several people did, including Walter's son.
@@estherrussell4283 My point was that Ally hung on to the coat tails of Paul to boost his media career. Everyone loved the vulnerable mind set of Gazza while acknowledging his talent. McCoist was a reprehensible leech.
@@dicksmall7976 Show some respect. What on earth has that got to do with the passing of a very decent man?
Friends
Was David Murray not there?
Class turn out but if steven wasnt there i find that so disrespectful from him and im a celtic fan walter was good guy god bless but if he didnt go shows you kind man he really was a fake
Am rangers man I agree with you he done us the dirty like Rodgers did to you but it feels more personal at a time like this
100% agree 👍
Did Stevie G go?
Pick them out eh. Big up Dick Campbell. Pars man. Loads of great faces. 👍
you couldnt pay me to video or take pictures at someone's funeral, you ever heard of respect?
The mainstream media is a swamp of sewage. If they can fly a helicopter over Cliff Richard's house and make up paedo stories, hack into murdered girl's phone voice mails etc, they can take pictures at a funeral / memorial of people who kicked a ball around for a job.
Myself being from Glasgow, I can gladly say that Walter Smith was a Glasgow godfather of Scottish football, who always improved the Scottish game. RIP🪦
Rip gaffer
Richard gough has kept his figure very well considering most are very obese now
Did Gerrard turn up, sad if he didn’t!!!
Wasn't about him
What a weird place to have paparazzi
I remember watching Hibs v Rangers game at Easter Road when Ally and Colin West spent the whole game spitting in the face of Hibs defender Mark Fulton came over to take a throw in he ran his hand over his face which was dripping in spit the most disgusting things I've ever seen.
Astard Celtic players wearing Celtic colour ties FFS
Don't agree, they could be wearing Celtic scarves and bunnets. They turned up to respect the great man that he was, whatever the divide. Fair play to the legend that he was.
@@roycebarron1 they couldn't stop for one day .
Just wear a black tie . Forget about rangers and celtic and show up for the great man
@@roycebarron1 did Walter Smith or ally moist show up to Tommy burns wearing rangers ties ?
I really don’t think it was a statement or anyone else actually noticed apart from you. I cannot speak for anyone else but my personal opinion as a Rangers fan, and one very respectful of the man Walter Smith was, I am just glad they took the time to respect the man. Let’s just leave it at that and not tarnish the man’s mourning by talking about the colour or pattern of peoples ties.
@@roycebarron1 aaaaaaahhh I seeeeeeee your one of those peoples. Right ok man what ever am bored with you now , idiot. Good luck with your life choices .
