Im a life long Celtic supporter and have nothing but complete respect for Walter Smith. My heart goes out to his family and the wider Rangers family at this time because he is a massive loss to Scotland and Scottish football. I remember when he got the Scotland Job and i remember feeling excited because i felt Scotland had finally secured a top class manager for the National team. Then Paul le Guen left Rangers and he went back to Ibrox which says a lot about him as a man and how much he loved Rangers and i equally new it was game on again for the Title which it turned out to be. Both Celtic and Rangers had decent teams back then. May he find the peace he truly deserves as he was a giant of a man.
You can hear the real rawness of emotion and grief in Allys voice talking about his manager, friend and father figure Walter....it is heartbreaking yet heartwarming at the same time. So sad to hear. Managed to get the best out of Gazza, both at Rangers and Everton. Souness may have laid the foundations for Walter in Glasgow, but like Paisley taking over from Shanks, he went on and produced a dynasty. Well done, Ally for keeping it together. I could see how devastated he was talking about the great man.
@Sean Yep. Gazza was severely heading off the rails after his stint at Boro, and Walter kind of reinvented him as a holding midfielder at Everton, spraying the ball about in front of the back four. Always wonder how good he could have been without those terrible injuries..?

RIP Walter. True football Legend. From all the Glasgow Rangers family.
Celtic fan and im gutted i have nothing but respect and admiration for Walter the manager but more for the man carrying TB coffin helping launch the Billy McNeil charity. We have lost another legend.
Also was a supporter of John hartsons charity too.
RIP Walter Smith.
Huge part of the heyday of Scottish Football.
That was so brave of you to talk about Walter so soon....I was privileged to work beside him and you and it really was like a family...heartbroken ..Have so many special memories of him..such a special man...he will be so sadly missed by everyone.
As a Celtic fan Walter Smith is a man who is rightly lauded as one of Scottish football's best. Condolences to the Smith family and all extended Rangers fan family.
A manger, a fan, a coach, a friend, a father. A true gentleman. They say a good teacher u can see in there pupils. Ali is the Pupil what does that say about teacher. I’m just so lucky I got to the Gers play the Walter way live. Thanks Walter
He garners respect across the Glasgow divide......as a Celtic fan I've nothing but respect for the man and his achievements. RIP
Made every gers supporter feel like we knew him personally, a man that loved our club & fact that celtic supporters appreciated him shows he didn't buy into the bitterness side of it at all. Early 90s with him in charge, we were best in Britain & then on 2nd coming got us to eufa final..love respect & forever thankful to a true legend🇬🇧👏
Such a shock, celtic fan here, broke my heart many a times growing up watching football he was a great manager and I pass on my condolences to all his family and his football family RIP Walter Smith 💙💚
Celtic fan here R.I.P walter ynwa what a legend
As a celtic fan, Walter was and will be remembered as a true gent, a great manager. Well done Ally, life is more important than football. R.I.P Walter.
Thanks for the memories and the rivalry
It's been said the true worth of a person's legacy isn't based on achievements alone, but how people speak of their character and personality. The reverence Walter is spoken about here by Ally is a true testament to the man. Rest in peace Walter Smith.
RIP Walter Smith . From a Celtic fan I hated how he managed Rangers in the 90s. But respect you were a great manager and you carried Tommy Burns coffin. Nothing but absolute respect RIP.
*plus THAT interview with Chick Young legendary
Respect to Ally, this was clearly extremely difficult to do so soon after the news but he stayed strong and gave a wonderful account of Walter. RIP Walter, proper gentleman 💙
Celtic fan here, I am happy he was able to see rangers win 1 more title.
Shed a tear listening to Ally. As a Rangers supporter I've so many great memories watching teams managed by Walter, a top class man. You were simply the best.
Rip gaffer
Not even a rangers fan and man a had some tears listening to Ally what a legend
Things like this are above rivalry and its so nice to Celtic and Rangers fans putting it aside and celebrating and honouring him , What a guy , What a Manager 👏 RIP ❤
BS untill the next derby then they be kicking the shite out of each other
In all my time following Rangers, my Celtic supporting friends trashed every player and every manager we ever had, they never said a bad word about Walter, ever, trust me, if you are from Glasgow that speeks volumes.
R.I.P Gaffer.
For me, having Scottish heritage, Walter was the reason I grew up feeling so passionate about that side of my family. He made me realise what passion and understanding was. How to be empowering. One hell of a man, one hell of an original. Will be missed by all. Rip
Classy and emotional tribute from a great striker to a great manager.....I remember when the brilliant Tommy burns passed away and these two men showed us all what class was by being there to honour not only their fellow coach but a dear friend.....we all love our rivalry with celtic, as I'm sure celtic fans love it too......some things are just much much bigger when a man like Mr Smith passes away.....what a sad sad day ....
RIP Walter Smith 😔 massive respect to Ally for his words
Ally showed class speaking of walter he was true gers man
Times like this is when we all come together. Thanks to all the supporters from across the country. To all the Celtic fans commenting..... touch of class.
Celtic fan here, Walters legacy will live on forever. Sore loss for Scottish football. Always felt his approach to his management and knowledge was top tier. Broke my heart so many times as a Celtic supporter🤣, he had rangers playing some great stuff! Rest easy 🙏🏻
Rest easy. Sir Walter Smith. You changed so much and did so much in levels of success for Rangers FC and Scottish football. God bless wee Ally for being up there.
Respect from a Celtic supporter. Walter was a great.RIP
Rest in peace Walter Smith. An incredible manager, person and ambassador for our beautiful game. He gave many fans their best days. Caused many fans of opposing teams like me (to struggle with results) but what a manager he was. Rest easy x
RIP Walter Smith absolute legend of a man who optimised everything great about Rangers Football Club. Well done super Ally a fitting tribute to the special man he would have been so proud of how you conducted that interview. RESPECT. 🔴⚪🔵
That was a tough watch, Im Celtic but Walter transcended the divide, great manger and footballing man, Scotland's lost a great one RIP!
Walter Smith Rangers manager and legend. Great, great man, very sad news. He leaves a void in Scottish football.❤️🍀🇮🇪🏴
FROM Barbados my condolences to the Family of Walter Smith, saw him in the dug out many times on tv and you could tell he had a great passion for this great game,R.i.p..
As a lifelong Celtic fan I just have to say that Walter Smith was an absolute gentleman and a decent human being.
He brought great success to RFC and was always very humble in his success. Best wishes to his grieving family and all his friends who will surely miss him.
What a lovely tribute from the guys here 💙
Well said Darren 👏
Proud of your comment
It must be some kind of comfort for his family to hear these kind of comments
Ally was the first person I thought of when I heard the news, they were very special together. Huge kudos to Ally for coming on and telling us all about this great man. RIP Walter Smith.
I’m English avid football obsession, Walter was one of my tutors on the uefa A license at Largs 21 years ago, what an experience a real gentleman and top coach, RIP Walter 💙🇬🇧
Thanks to Ally and Jim for sharing their grief for Walter with us all at this difficult time. Their honest love and respect and echoing of universal admiration for a Scottish great speaks volumes about the man himself.
Hi from.south africa ...I have always thought what a great man ..he cleary loved the gers ..he was a legend ..RIP hail hail
Loved him as a player and assistant to Jim McLean at Dundee Utd and never stopped liking him for the man he was wherever he was in the years after. RIP Wattie.
Well Done Ally Mcoist fantastic tribute one thing i always remember to be light hearted for a minute Walter not known for his goal scoring ability but he scored a goal for Dundee Utd and kissed his boot one time caught on i think it was Sportscene top bloke RIP
Celtic fan,met the man on a few occasions, nothing but a gentleman
As an Aberdeen and Manchester United fan was gutted to hear that news the day rip Walter legend in Scotland and afar for sure rest easy big man
Sunderland supporter here. A great football man and a gentleman. RIP Walter Smith ♥️
Such sad news to awake to today. Loved watching his Rangers team in the 90's and then during the late 2000's. He will be sadly missed by all. A true gentle and legend. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. 🙏🙏😢😢
Morton fan. Really gutted to hear the news. Absolute gentleman. RIP Walter and condolences to his family.
Hearts fan here. RIP to Walter Smith, a true gentleman of the game and a great ambassador for Scotland. Best regards to the Smith family and Ally McCoist, such a brave guy doing this ❤️
Everton fan here. Fond memories of Walter and his everton teams. RIP
Incredible strength by Ally to do that, but thankful to him because that was a wonderful tribute to a legend.
From Dublin, Ireland, not a Rangers fan have a soft spot for Celtic but i always liked Walter Smith when iheard him speak. Came across as a gentleman, softly spoken, calm and measured. The type of man you just know you would have enjoyed working for. I was little shocked by the news as 73 is young enough these days. But none of us know when our short journeys in this world are going to end. R.I.P Walter. Rest well big man.
This reminds me of when the Great Tommy Burns passed. This leaves a huge void in not just Scottish football but football as a whole. As a Rangers supporter this man bled blue. Devastating news RIP Walter Smith the Gaffer and more importantly the gentleman that he was. Will be sorely missed.
The greatest memory of Walter was that penalty shootout against Fiorentina with Nacho Novo scoring to take Rangers to Manchester in UEFA Cup Final 2008, a first class tactician and footballing legend. R.I.P.
Thank you to all the celtic fans who have paid their respects to Walter Smith.
Thank you.
Such a loving feeling heart-felt tribute from Ally.
R.I.P. WALTER SMITH
