Finally! The Acer X27 has been released! I waited about 2 years for this moment and now it finally arrived. 4K 144Hz G-Sync HDR (High Dynamic Range) Gaming without any compromises, right? At least the specifications on the Acer Predator X27 are really promising. The X27 is also equipped with a local dimming (direct LED) technology with 384 individual dimming zones behind the panel to offer a superior contrast, black level and a maximum brightness of 600 cd/m2 in HDR mode with a peak of 1000 cd/m2 (nits). On SDR the Acer has a brightness peak around 300 cd/m2. In addition, in the panel build in is a Quantum Dot IPS panel which means that it will offer superior colors compared to "older" 1440p 165Hz IPS panels on the market. So the Acer has a color gamut coverage of 100% in sRGB and 99.6% Adobe RGB as well as a color gamut volume of 171.2% in sRGB and 118% in Adobe RGB. The Predator X27 is using a panel from the panel manufacturer AU-Optronics (known for many other gaming monitors) which has a color depth of 8-Bit + FRC. G-Sync has a range of 30-144Hz.

Any reviews coming soon? You are the best monitor reviewer on youtube hands down, i'm still waiting for a good 1440p 144hz ips monitor without panel lottery and good look (from the current ones the only one i like is the pg279q but since it has the worst qc out of these type of panels i'm not gonna risk it, i'm not gonna replace it like 4 times untill i get a good one).

*Update*: A few people mentioned that there is an adapter integrated to increase the space between the VESA bracket plate and the cooler the monitor - Will check it later when I'm home back from work. (No adapter included but Acer already has solved this issue with a new adapter)
Please note: Before you are asking why I did not record the fan - The problem is that it would not reproduce the real volume (your volume settings, my microphone volume setting)
Please note: Yes 2000$ / 2500€ is too much for a good price-performance ratio on the Acer X34 (as mentioned in the review)
Please note: I get a bigger apartment (+60 square meters only for a home cinema, youtube, and gaming) So it will cost some time to organize everything. Are you interested in a documentation for those rooms?

Wtf ? Asus and Acer are Taiwanese companies why do their monitors cost a lot less in the US than in the EU ?

This is my very first monitor. I have been gaming on tv for decades. I think it's pretty big considering how close I am to the screen. The only problem I have with this monitor is that when I change the resolution in games, it bugs out. When it does work, its blurry. 1440p looks like 1080p. It really sucks because in some games I prefer high frame rates. Some games I like 4k. But I cant change resolution sometimes.

It's a sad fact that even in the year 2018, the 4K 144Hz market is still a pathetic duopoly of ACER and ASUS.
We are living in an era where native 4k 120Hz HDR TVs are available at prices way lower than this monitor, yet we're still price gouged for a device that's obviously rushed out of the factory in an unfinished and unrefined state. Crazy cheap and loud fan for a monitor that costs as much as a high end quality gaming laptop? This screams rush job. At this price point they should have either incorporated a highly efficient passive cooling solution as a heat sink that doubles as a work of art or just stick in laptop style heat pipe and fans and since it'll never get anywhere near as hot as a CPU and GPU combined, run multiple fans at rpms used for idling laptops.
At 27 inches and over 2000USD, it's WAY too small. Now, if someone like LG gets serious about creating a 4k high FPS ultimate monitor and uses one of their 55 inch native 4k 120Hz TV panels as the basis and modify the electronics for minimizing latency, USB C and DisplayPort support, then plug in a G-Sync module and price it similarly to the ASUS and ACER rush jobs...

There are no 4k 120hz tv's. HDMI doesn't support the bandwith. 99% of tv's are 60hz. almost all of the TV's with "higher" refresh rates are software overclocked which = artifacting and crap from hell.

before you pay 2.5k for this piece of plastic shit please check out a high end tv model like the "LG C8". TV's have come a long way and they offer much much better picture quality over these shitty "gaming" monitors. input lag is almost none existent on them these days, and they offer true blacks, non butchered hdr (12bit 4.4.4 chroma), and soon freesync 2.0 (samsung already added that, lg surely will follow shortly). they can perform at over 120hz (not just interpolated) if you create a custom resolution in windows with a lower resolution then 4k and also have flicker filters like "lightboost" to reduce motion blur.
not to mention they are several times larger then a tiny monitor made with cheap china plastic. so if you're looking to spend 2.5k bucks, check out one of these tvs first.

It was rather obvious that Acer won't be able to implement good local dimming algorithm. The best and most experienced TV manufacturers are struggling bad with this. This is probably where the difference between Acer and Asus is going to be the most noticeable, Asus is far from serious display manufacturer too but I think they will be able to do better job. You cannot really do much with this because local dimming and FALD is much less effective in desktop viewing environement than on the TV that is watched from much further distance and viewing angles are much less of an issue, while here it is all about viewing angles. But still paying $2000+ for the display from third grade manufacturer isn't really a good idea. Right now with all the complicated backlight techniques needed for HDR the manufacturer proficiency and experience with display technologies is going to matter much more than before, when you basically just slap the panel into the case and thats all you do, no quality requirements. But now it matters. LG and Samsung will have much better idea how to implement FALD. But they will take their time too, as always. Anyway, don't waste your money for overpriced third grade products.

• @LimsCave
@LimsCave  6 лет назад +3

I mean, 2000$ or 2500€ is definitely too high, as mentioned and I think Acer/Asus are not the only problems here (AU-Optronics). Regarding the much further and distance you are totally(!) right and this is the point where VA monitors strongly differ from VA TVs, simply because of the distance (VA monitors will show much more viewing angle issues aka VA Glow and color + gamma shift). I really would wish more TV manufacturers would enter the monitor market (Sony, Panasonic...) would be awesome :O Hopefully we will see more direct led solutions this year, except of the AU-Optronics panels :)

• @Henningberlin94
@Henningberlin94 6 лет назад +1

yeah I think with Gsync and AU Optronics we will see better stuff 2019. That´s the only bad Thing About Gsync, that they are limited to AU Optronics, but otherwise Freesync would be worse because Nvidia at least take sure that there will be at least any guaranteed Quality, while it is much more difficult to find the wanted Quality with AMD Card related monitors. I just say 30-max Gsync refresh rate, while at freesync that is difficult to find, also 384 local dimming zones you wont find with Freesync. I think the best monitor Quality will be there in the future and mabye without Gsync and that will suck.

• @LimsCave
@LimsCave  6 лет назад +2

Personally, I could live with a WHQD 144Hz monitors, direct LEDs, backlight strobing and without scanlines/sharpness issues. Maybe Samsung will do so someday. I am just wondering: On the monitor market still is enough "space" to enter and compete with quality control issues from AU-Optronics - But it probably cost too much for the manufacturer since there are enough people out there (probably 98%) without seeing any issues on a monitor. My hope will never die :P

• @Henningberlin94
@Henningberlin94 6 лет назад +1

yeah correctly, also I think the most customers who buy every 2 years a new monitor are Gamers with nvidia Cards and the manufacturers would have to work with nvidia or don´t get my Money until I have enough Money for multiple Monitors.
I now registred with my PG279Q that Things like Colour banding are there at 8 bit Monitors and TVs get that away with Chips and Software which probably gives more latency or how you call that...
yeah tv Picture Quality, monitor Response times and Gsync would be a Dream....
But I like the HDR, so 1440p with perfect HDR would be perfect for current graphic Cards.
But in the Long time I would prefer 2160p HDR.
I am also waiting until Football games at Sky are more getting 4k and what the next gen Sony ZD9 can do and then I will decide if it is time for a 4k HDR TV. Also the ZD9 successor should better still be able to Show 3D movies. A bit Off Topic but that is all what my brain related to 4K HDR.

Well, I saw this monitor in person, it was on Display, and when I looked at it I just thought "Wow". The game on display was fortnite, which wasn't the best game, but the colors... man, the density of 4k at 27inch... man, the quality of the picture was hella perfect. I have to say that it blew me away. Still, I do believe that this monitor is not worth the price tag, it's just too much. However, I'm kinda exited for future releases, specially for ultrawide monitors with this picture quality.

I had the Acer X27 until Friday last week but ended up sending it back due to it's bad quality...:
Backlightbleeding from hell (very visible when FALD was off!) and a dead pixel...
also it had an unbearable yellowish tint in the left screen area...
and even with using the stand (and not vesa-mounting it) the fan was very audible up to a point where it was louder than my gaming-laptop (which is not a silent beast of course) -
especially after switching settings in the NVidia Control Panel (like changing refreshrate and bitdepth,...)
as for the FALD itself: yes there is haloing - but that was to be expected - 384 zones just is not enough!
and don't forget: this is NOT OLED - so in darker scenes the FALD will reach its limitations! as seen in the HDR chess-demo-video and others...
(i have noticed it a lot while watching jessica jones in HDR via NetFlix App...)
and don't forget: OLED has it's own flaws and issues (image retention, burn-in, 60hz limit, no variable refreshrate and HDMI2.0 bandwidth limitations) -
and is therefore not suited for using it as a PC monitor!
also i noticed, that when opening a black window and moving it over a white background,
the border between black/white occurs purple from time to time... but only if FALD is activated!
brighter HDR content looks fantastic with this one...
for UHD movies i advise to go 4K 24hz 10bit RGB (or if you have a UHD HFR-movie like Billy Lynn 4K 60hz 10bit RGB) - for non HDR content: 4K 24hz 8bit RGB
for HDR games: 4K 98hz 10bit RGB - or if you really get higher fps with your GPU and settings: 4K 120hz 10bit 422
for non-HDR games: 4K 120hz 8bit RGB
but i would not advice to overclock any panel - because of inducing color-artifacts - the panel just has less time to reproduce a picture on screen...
i tested it with my Acer XB27 which i overclocked from 144hz to 165hz and i could see that colors shifted and the yellowish tone enhanced...
with Acer X27 overclocked to 144hz i noticed the same effect - but this time the need for chroma subsampling added its own effects on top...
in general: the higher the refreshrate the less color-accurate the picture will be! and for this panel they optimized it for 60hz and 120hz...
and trying it with a color-test-image - there is a visible effect with using 60hz and 120hz... the colors do shift slightly and loose some vibrancy!
Again: that happens with 1440p GSync monitors too...
but it is of course not a huge problem and is due to the physical limitations of LCDs
besides of HDR10 content there is no usecase for 10bit stuff for normal users...
(even photoshop and lightroom, etc... don't use a 'real 10bit chain' when using a Geforce GPU and this monitor...)
I try to order a second Acer x27 to see if i had just bought a bad model...
but first i had to refund it and now i'm waiting to get my cash back...
at the moment there is no other acer x27 available - but one shop offers the PG27UQ instead... maybe i try this one...
for all potential buyers i would advice to wait at least until a second edition of these first gen GSync HDR monitors...
Acer is known for selling refined models after some time - like with X34, X34a, X34p - etc...
Or just wait for a second generation with 1000 Zones MiniLEDs... as seen at computex2018
This is clearly a FIRST GEN product aiming at early adopters...
if you want a monitor that at least gives you a very good value for your money and uses FALD for good HDR reproduction - you simply have to wait longer!
hopefully its successor will reduce all the flaws this monitor has...
besides of these - this monitor is just awesome!

Hey mate, thank you for sharing YOUR experience with the Acer!
also it had an unbearable yellowish tint in the left screen area...
wow that is really very unfortunate, as well as the dead pixel... :O
and don't forget: OLED has it's own flaws and issues
indeed! I do not like compressed content on an OLED screen (netflix, youtube) a native blu ray already looks much better (black shadow detail)
also i noticed, that when opening a black window and moving it over a white background,
this is probably what I have called "inverse blooming" and causes also the "flicker issue"
at the moment there is no other acer x27 available - but one shop offers the PG27UQ instead... maybe I try this one...
I should get my unit also soon.... Have pre-ordered it but somehow the show is not sending it to me -.-
for all potential buyers i would advice to wait at least until a second edition of these first gen GSync HDR monitors...
I also would suggest to wait, definitely. Only if money does not matter :P!

Design? Definitely the Acer, I really like the shading hoods and also prefer (personally) the foot stand. In terms of the monitor itself, I cannot tell you for now which one but I strongly assume that the difference between both monitors will differ only very slightly.
Will probably make a "short" review on the Asus, not as detailed as the Acer. I will test each topic by myself and probably only show the differences (and measurements + test photos for the page) and lead people to the Acer review to see how this panel performs. I just don't want to spend another 4 days on the Asus PG27UQ :P
Btw, all experiences from other users are really helpful experiences, not only for me, but also for other people out there :)

Hi , excellent video , I love the amount of details you put into your reviews , I just pre-ordered 2x2080 Ti , and I am thinking to upgrade my Acer G35 monitor , I was considering this monitor , the X27 , what do you think of the input lag in games ? I usually play competitive multiplayer games .. I know 4K is not the way to go for competitive games , But am curious if it is good enough maybe ? I dont know , I need a way to enjoy my new cards that will come in september .. maybe for casual gaming , another idea I had is to buy the 120 hz G-sync 4k TV that companies will release in partnership with Nvidia , maybe I can enjoy some single player couch gaming and keep the G35 for competitive ? what do you think ? any idea when those TVs will come out ? thanks

Finding a decent monitor is such a chore. It seems every manufacturer has certain defects in their process, Samsung has excellent color, but horrible inversion on their VAs, LG has middling Color reproduction even on some IPS panels, and if you're in the market for a high-refresh monitor, there's even more compromises. Thinking about maybe just getting a solid IPS with a dumpster-tier Refresh rate until the panel tech matures in a few years, and then just migrate that to a 2nd screen. AOC and Philips seem to be sourcing an excellent 32inch IPS panel that can hit 75HZ, producing between 100%-125% sRGB. Uniformity is a bit wonky, but at around $250 it's a lot easier to swallow defects compared to $500-$2000.

Do you think you could experiment trying to OC this monitor beyond 144 Hz? Does it work, or does it just fail and fallback to 144 Hz?
Also, is there ANY difference between this and the ASUS equivalent? Or is it just pure frame aesthetics? On your site's post, you described the pros and cons with this monitor, but are they different with the ASUS (better or worse)?

• @LimsCave
@LimsCave  6 лет назад

I do not own the Acer anymore so I cannot try to OC. I think the difference between both is only very slight (some design aspects, presets, osd) While the uniformity (white and black), as well as the IPS glow or clouding within TN, will mostly vary between different manufacturers, it is really hard to tell even when ONLY reviewing 1 unit of both monitors. For this, we also need more feedback from buyers out there or order the Acer + Asus several times :P I think even in a 1:1 comparison it should be pretty hard to tell a difference especially because of the dimming zones

Let's see...a Sony 65" X930E 4K HDR TV or a 27" Acer 4k HDR monitor? I'll take the Sony TV with a much higher peak brightness of 1500 nits which will produce 2x the HDR experience that 27" monitor will. Absolutely ridiculous what Acer wants for that monitor. It's a $600 monitor at best.

• @LimsCave
@LimsCave  6 лет назад +2

600$ is a bit understated. As mentioned, the current price is not worth it and the Sony has a better image quality (:

• @LimsCave
@LimsCave  6 лет назад +1

OLEDs also have it own cons (black crush in brighter image content, burn in issues, uniformity issues after a period of time, black crush in compressed content) OLED really is awesome but when comparing a native blu-ray to netflix for example, you already can see that it looks sometimes weird on the compressed content (personally I did not liked that) but the main reason I have decided for my Sony is that I am scared of the burn-in issues ;D OLED is the clear winner for blacks/contrast/response times (:

• @jbond.007
@jbond.007 6 лет назад

I guess if you watch your OLED like Rtings does then you have reason to be concerned. Just don't watch something with the same static image on the screen 24/7 and you'll be fine.

• @LimsCave
@LimsCave  6 лет назад +2

Rtings has made a great comparison with 6 OLED screens (I think) to check the TV's regarding Burn-In and homogeneity issues over time. I'm sure you saw the video :) I had one OLED and after watching 2 movies I already had brighter content (in the 21:9 cinema bars) when I watched 16:9 content for around +1 hours. I just didn't wanted to enter the "risk"

I know this might seem like a strange question but is there a monitor that is high refresh rate so 120hz and up that has a glossy finish on the screen. Ever since seeing an imac I have had a preference for glossy displays because of how it makes the colors pop. I use my PC in a room with controlled lighting so reflections and glare is not an issue.

Lastly I recently saw rtings review of this monitor and oh my lord is the input lag egregious for a gaming display. 13ms with gsync, 20ms @ 60hz. My OLED C7 is 20ms at 60hz for christ's sake!

wallpaper engine (steam). The lamp is just a cheap RGB lamp which I bought on Amazon. The Globe is no longer available (ordered on Amazon.de - Germany, and it does not have any brand name). Hey,

Can you explain this further?
Thank you very much for those awesome reviews.

• @LimsCave
@LimsCave  6 лет назад +1

Imagine following: A moving bar from the right to the left side with pixels visible with the naked eye (for example 1 cm x 1cm squares) then the motion blur would be much more visible than on a pixel which is "only" 0.2 cm x 0.2 cm big. Due to the higher ppi, the actual "way" of the blur is smaller (I hope you understand what I mean 😂) This, however, is not considered with measuring hardware (an oscilloscope for example)

I wish auo and others would focus more on refining 1440p 144hz panels rather than moving on to 4k that still have the same issues as before. I would be tempted to spend $2000 on a 1440p 1440hz monitor without backlight bleed, no dead or stuck pixels, and no IPS glow. I'm not at all tempted to spend that money on a 4k version with those same problems and some cool features that carry new problems of their own.

I've watched a lot of your videos but still can't decide on a monitor lol.
I have £550 max to spend. £600 just seems too much even though it's only 50 quid more.
I like the look of the quantum dot Samsung and the Dell 27 16dg especially. Trouble is for every good review, you read one worst monitor I ever owned story.
The predators seem decent but maybe a bit too gamer centric design.
But two of the ones I've looked at have gsync, which sounds good although I have no experience of it.
All I know is I'd prefer 27 inch, 144hz, 1440p.
4k just seem too early atm for games.
Which is your favourite in this price range and which is your everyday monitor?
