Brut and Old Spice. A comparison between vintage and modern versions of both.

- I was asked to do a review/comparison of vintage Brut and the modern Brut a few weeks ago. There was a great comparison out of England by PaulHFilms that I recommend you check out. I'll do a quicker comparison but will include two Brut Products Paul did not review. I also will do a comparison of Old Spice, vintage and modern. The following are a few cool links that really helped me.

My grandpa swore by old spice, I remember once he told me he bought 100 bottles in the 70's because he was scared that they were going to discontinue it. To this day he still has a dozen or so bottles from the 70's
These last a long time. I bought mine in 2017 and I still have plenty..
@@sergiopacheco2939 Does he happen to have one he can sell? lol
Smart man, considering they really changed the recipe
Is there anybody in 2020 ??
@@IORIYAGAMI32 yep. What's up?
They should come out with a special anniversary edition of Old Spice, using the original formula and the original glass bottles!
Christian Guenther That would be cool👍👍💈
They still use glass bottles here in the UK
They changed from the original formula in about 2016 so it would be compliant with the new laws
I feel like Pinaud should do the same
In the 70's there weren't as many regulations for the ingredients that could be used in fragrances that's why is probably smells a bit differently.
Another factor could be that from the vintage bottle the alcohol evaporated overtime and therefore the percentage of fragrance oil is higher than the modern ones.
Great comparison Ken, and thanks for the shout out, very kind of you....all the best...Paul.
Thank you for watching Paul 👍👍
My elementary school principal used enough of it that we could smell him coming down the hall before he entered the classroom. Very convenient. lol
Gord235 perfect giveaway to him sneaking up...lol👍💈

omg man that's too old 😭
Nice review, seeing those vintage bottles threw me back to my early childhood when my father used those two aftershaves, Brut 33 by Faberge and Old Spice, I remember also he used to have a few bottles of ENGLISH LEATHER with the wooden bottle cap.
Octavius Maximus Thanks. Happy Holidays👍💈🌲
I remember my dad having Old Spice and English Leather also in the late 60's- early 70's. And then maybe mid 70's Brut. Back then all came in glass bottles....no plastic bottles in that time period.
I still have lots of my dad and grandfathers old Avon cologne bottles. Some still have some product in them. I remember playing with the bottles as a child. There was a truck, a pipe, a dog to name a few. This video for some reason brought back memories of smelling the musk in those bottles
chris fields Those bottles are awesome 👍💈
Bought my first old spice aftershave lotion today. I really like it. It’s somewhat exotic but very clean scent. Nice stuff. I’ll keep wearing it. Thanks.
If you're watching this and have never worn Old Spice, then its recommended that you do, its a great old classic with a unique smell that won't disappoint.
Well, I wear Old Spice "Original" the new stuff and I'm decently happy with it. The sillage, longevity, and projection are not brilliant after 2+ hours. So I'm refreshing it if I want to retain the frag on me throughout the day. Its a competitively priced aftershave, you get what you pay for and in that respect, I'll keep on buying it as I have done for the past 40 years.
I have about 50 bottles of various EDT's, EDP's Parfums and Colognes and I still buy Old Spice Original when it runs out! Its an agreeable, un-generic, unique frag out there on its own, a timeless classic and so it should remain.
Good review Kensurfs thanks a lot. 🎵💨🙂💨😋💨😎
The Geezer Thank you very much👍💈
I have been using nothing but witch hazel as an aftershave for years. I have to shave 5 days a week and recently bought some of the old spice aftershave. Is there any reason it makes my face feel smooth? I figured with the burn and all that it would severely dry my face out. The opposite is very much true.
yes, i love both old spice and brut.
as i was watching the vid i was holding a classic and a original. i checked the bottles. the original is shorter than the classic. the original has a gray cap. the classic has a red cap. for many years i marveled at the fit of the cap it is such a perfect fit. thanks Ken.
Moe Shouse Thank you👍💈
I grew up the late 60s-early 70s and my mom & dad would get me and my brother either Old Spice or Avon Wild Country colognes nearly every Christmas when we were kids. Loved that old time smell.
Ive noticed on the new Old Spice, after its opened and sits around 3 or 4 weeks it gets stronger and when you put it on you can smell the stronger spicy smell for 4 or 5 hours
I like watching your video's as I'm just getting into real shaving at 35 most of my friends use electric or go to the barber's for a shape up or most have baby beards it's nice that I've found a good few people that share my love for real shaving and shaving products some old some new. Oh and thank you for the reply friend shout out from the UK 👊🏿
Indigo Child Thank you👍💈
Thanks for this, really helpful to know that the modern versions are similar enough that I can buy them to try out before trying to find the vintage version
👍👍
I enjoy all of your videos and this was another good one. I purchased the "new" Old Spice and you are absolutely correct, the scent is close but it's not the same as the original.
Thanks very much Tim. I just did the shave with it and it's been about 1 hour. I can't smell it anymore.
It's always hard to compare old with new when it comes to fragrance. Chemicals breakdown over time and change so a thirty year old bottle of fragrance is not going to have quite the same smell as it did on day one. I have seen some surprisingly short lifespans on some expensive bottles of cologne in the past and I think they recommend that three years is about the standard life span of a good quality scent and that is only if it has been stored away from direct light.
presterjohn71 👍👍💈
Old spice original is the one you want, it’s different than the one you have. They make them in 3 different ones now I believe it’s the original, classic, and the cologne. The original is supposed to smell a lot more like the original as well as coming in a glass bottle, the label on the front will have stripes behind it I would like to know your opinion on it!
modern old spice smells more or less the same as vintage, but it is watered down..the fragrance is not as intense as it used to be..
djvidi1976 I agree. It doesn’t last quite as long.👍💈
great that you are able to compare scents, thanks to yr collection with very old and new bottles
👍💈💈💈
How much would it cost P&G to make a 100% original Old Spice in these days? Just for the fun of it, I'm pretty sure it would sell like crazy if they would actually use the vintage recipe and even the old packaging.
Paul Cristian I'd buy it for sure👍👍
I have heard Rubicon manufactures the vintage formula in india. I bought one and it smells fantastic! Go on ebay and type in Original old spice and make sure it's coming out of india.
The aftershave lotion that is.
I contact them and they said that thay cant do the same formula because of law. Because of this they change littlebit formula of original old spice
Not so sure if I would be willing to put something in my face, mixed somewhere in india...
Hey Ken, just wondering if you've ever tried Old Spice's Whitewater after shave? I found it at TJ Maxx about a year ago, and absolutely fell in love with it. I believe it is an import, but can be found on Amazon. Love the videos, keep up the good work!
I still remember when I got my first bottle of Proctor & Gamble Old Spice, it didn't quite smell right and was weak, the original Old Spice would last all day, the P&G crap was gone in less than an hour, I told my dad who used it also and found the same. That was about the same time Old Spice puck soap and cream disappeared off the shelves, that was around 1991. It was about that time dad and I found Col Conks and switched to the Bay Rum soap and aftershave, until it disappeared too.

Thanks for the video, especially about the Old Spice. Older is definately better.

im just starting to collect some old spice products its a little difficult to find because i live in europe especially the older products but that makes the hunt more fun :)

The old, old spice smelled so good. Same with Brut.
totally agree.
Thats reminds me on cooking shows on TV, where I have to believe Chef Tony, that his cooked meal ist really good...
But I just will try these 'older' ones - my father and my grandfather used old spice in former years...
Thanks for your videos. I am with you sind the end of september (20th I guess) and I am going to to the point where I have seen all shaving stuff from you.... And yeah... I am addicted... I have 5 Shavers and I have also 2 unused packs of Shaving soap and I would like to shave myself daily, but the beards does not grow that fast...

I am still having a bottle containing about a 1/4 which
bought which was bought in early 1960

Elvis Presley’s favourite was Brut
Paul yes sir
Priscilla said it was this in an interview!!! 💭🧚♀️💭🧚♀️💭🧚♀️💭🧚♀️
If the bottle was left open, it could become stronger, due to the alcohol evaporating.
brett knoss Absolutely, Thanks Brett👍👍💈
Huge fan of the videos. We still get the brut in the medallion bottle new here in South Africa, (brut by Fabergé). Its actually the cheapest aftershave available here, fantastic stuff.
👍👍👍
Another reviewer said that the brut we get today is yesterday's brut 33 which was a lighter version of the original.
Ike He May be right👍💈
As a fellow So. Cal shaver I share your opinion on the Old Spice. I have both of the Shulton a/s and cologne as well as the new Old Spice...old school ftw!
Thanks very much for watching. My next video I just finished, I used the new stuff and it worked great too.
I absolutely love the glass bottle me personally, they smell so much better and they locked so much better
I totally agree!💈💈
Old Spice is one of my favorite aftershave lotions. It still has a pleasant bite. But, the older version is different. It was nicer and stronger. Both of them are great. Thanks for a great video.
I don't know what the vintage Old Spice spells like, but I'm not fond of the new scent.
On the other hand, I love the Brut original & classic scents (green). It's what my dad used, so it has the nostalgia for me, but also smells great. I also use Brut deodorant and love it.
I love the smell of the stuff affordable too which is a plus
go to cvs or family dollar find the knock off old spice look on the bottom of the bottle it should say vi jon. i believe they bought the original fornula from old spice. if you want to compare them to the original.
I remember when my dad had his old spice in the glass bottle..
This video tempted me to buy some Brut and Old Spice today. When I uncapped the Brut, it took me back to 1965! The Old Spice, unfortunately, is barely there. I mean the scent is very weak. That makes me sad, because I liked Old Spice.
👍👍
Thanks Ken! Another awesome video! You make want to go to Walmart to get a bottle of spice or brut. I found the new brut a little too powdery.
Thanks Stanley
Mr. Ken,
I caught a Great bargain at a local closeout department store.
A large tube of Proraso 5.2 oz. for $1.00 U.S.
Thank you for reviews and suggestions
Great video by the way! this kind of stuff is always interesting to watch and informative! thanks bro!
Thank you Juan👍
I'm real Old Spice FAN, bought about 8 Original new shower gel and 8 Champion series -at One Go!
Me too. My bathroom is just packed with old spice stuff
@@Mikey-ym6ok Great to hear, but sadly, where I live (Singapore) but sadly, they have withdrawn the entire classic and champion series - not selling fast enough distributor said, but couldn't say if that was main/even real reason! My conclusion? I think Singapore Market doesn't have Taste! Don't know a good thing when they see one! Bland Market, Bland Consumers, Bland Brands!
I will try to get it online then, the whole range this time! Shrrks. Cheers fellow OS Fan 😎
It's do old world masculine, how can they unceremoniously just drop it in Sg market. That's right Christian, an Anniversary pack be great
I have a set of the "original original" Old Spice inherited from my late grandfather many years ago. He only used a couple times, & it's early 1960's. A.S. same look as your bottle, (& btw how you tell, is by the stopper; the original original is a Bekelite pin, 1.5mm diameter, solid, & the later bottles the stopper is hard Plastic, 2.5mm, & hollow in centre.
I inherited the set in early 1980's & did comparison to the then Orig scent O.S. I found the older type had the same initial punch but lasted a tiny bit longer than the early '80's version.
The Brut, I have a very different opinion on;
I find only when it's new, does it smell nice, but after 3 years it goes skunky, unlike the O.S. of any era.
I had Hai Karate years ago, & Orig Yardley, & both were great performers.
Pierre Cardin was an awesome scent.
Old Leather, -only when new- & only the Tropical version, was good, but 3 years after, & whoo it reeks like a sweaty shoe.
I still enjoy the scent of Old Spice, orig the most.
Brad Smith Very cool Brad👍👍
I get a lot of attention with Brut Black. Nice and crisp. I like the classics; Old Spice, Brut, English Leather, Aqua Velva, and Giorgio of Beverly Hills.
ken, why does the spice shaving soap not exist anymore, are there on the market not soaps with the same scent , greetings from Mexico robert
They changed the formulas on the new stuff
Ken I just received some old spice from India and man I love it! It seems to be more rounded in scent and not as cheap smelling. They still come in the milk glassware containers. I got the fresh like and original and they are amazing. India old spice is where it's at if you ask me..... have a good weekend Ken and hope your doing well and hope the family is well!

Stirling Soap Company makes a version of their own "Stirling Spice" that's a dead on strong original Old Spice scent like the 50s versions.
I have Stirling Spice and the modern Old Spice. Stirling Spice is stronger and lasts longer.
I’m mancotting Old Spice and other Procter and Gamble brands because of Gillette’s war on testosterone. Boycott forever.
JayH I just love their vintage razors👍💈
You sound like a little bitch
I recently bought some old spice. I won’t buy gillette anymore, but I really like the scent of old spice. Didn’t realize it, but my mom said it’s because my grandpa used it back in the day.
@@jamesearlcash7725 Gillette is a P&G product. Old Spice is a P&G product..
JayH,
I support your decision to “mancott” P&G; however, I think Boycotting Gillette is more fitting. P&G owns so manny different companies, that it’s hard to avoid. I believe Gillette’s attack on masculinity was one of the worst marketing decision in history; however, using vintage Old Spice, before P&G purchased Shulton, then changed the scent, is perfectly acceptable because P&G doesn’t get that money. I personally will continue to use my vintage Old Spice soap and aftershaves, but I will not purchase any more Gillette products anymore.
One of the best video of your channel , unfortunately we do not have these available products in Brazil , we need to import and price becomes prohibitive , thanks for the video !
Thanks again Roberto.
I was glad to rediscover and buy the brand for it's a great product still.
Best entry level products always go to old spice and brute when all else fails

Aftwr my grandfather passed i found the older bottle of old spice, i used it untill it ran out, when i went to buy more i was very sadly disappointed with thr new bottle and fragrance.
The older scent was much better I feel👍👍👍
Old spice reminds me of my father. It was his favourite
👍👍👍
Discovered Old Spice made in India is the exact formula used back in the day. Old Spice Lime is still available. Using a syringe, I refill my original glass bottles.
The old brut aftershave and the new brut aftershave are the same but you compared an old brut aftershave to a new brut splash on. The splash on has always been toned down a little so you can splash it on allover without it smelling too strong
mick Warnie 👍👍💈
@Kensurfs i remember the vintage old spice. the splash cologne was something i always wore until i found the aftershave. i might have to go on ebay and get some
OLD SPICE a loção inteligente 👍😃

I have the P & G version of the original old spice and it has a floral note to it.Rick Deweese done a comparison with the original old spice shave cream vs P & G version of the old spice on his brushnsoapnblade podcast last week.
I thought it smells a little lighter than the original.
You should try the vintage Avon colognes. The spicy is like old spice and the wild country has a clubman vibe. Can find them on ebsy fairly cheep in bulk none the less.
dtr130 Will take a look, thanks👍👍
Old spice now sells a cologne, which lasts all day. I’d wonder if the cologne is the strength you see with the older Old Spice mix.

Old Spice Lime was my favorite aftershave..just a wonderful aroma.
How did it smell exactly? Strong lime scent? Or like classic old spice scent but with a hint of lime added? Thanks!
That Vintage Old Spice Video was Player!
Johnny B absolutely 👍👍Thanks for watching.
I am turning into my dad more every day. I’ve been wanting to try Old Spice for a while so I bought some last month. Right off the bat I could tell it wasn’t the same and I did some research. It seems the company was sold a few years ago. The new stuff is okay but overwhelming when I first tried it. However, it tones down after a while but whatever new concoction they have come up with, I swear my poop now smells like Old Spice. I will probably buy more when this bottle runs out.
That's some nice vintage Old Spice bottles you have! I've written numerous times on shaving forums about how Proctor & Gamble has missed the novelty item boat with the lack of imagination they display, and obviously was in abundance at Shulton. I've even emailed P&G mentioning the same. Good comment about how adding ml to oz. on the bottles and cartons dates the box. I can still remember my 1960's grade school teachers saying, "better learn your metric tables. The US is converting by 1970." Well, I'm still waiting! LOL!
I'll write about the Old Spice P&G Classic difference and how it compares to the Indian Original Old Spice version (there's also a European Original version by P&G) as a comment to another video. Suffice it to say, the Classic aftershave lasts abour 30 minutes on my skin. However, the Old Spice Classic cologne (splash and atomizer) released by P&G smells alot stronger and in my opinion, is the current one to buy. - if you can't get your hands on the Old Spice Original Old Spice Eau De Toilette made in Europe. My personal favorite is Old Spice Musk aftershave from India, licensed for manufacturing to Rubicon by P&G.
The musk has very nice longevity. The projection is a bit weaker than this field's leader in strength of scene - Aqua Velva Musk.
I'm creating a new comment for Brut which may contain items of interest to you and your viewers.
Sometimes these companies lose sight of a great product when they have one. The earlier scents were excellent in my opinion.
Take a good look at what L'Oreal has done in France with the Mennen brand, compared to what Colgate Palmolive has done in the US (nothing): Here's a collage:

And here's a thread I started on it last year:

+Shave- a-thon 👍👍
Did you catch my other long comment about Brut? I really suggest buying that huge bottle. It's a real conversation piece on my shelf. I don't even want to open it. It normally sells for about $30, but Target had an amazing sale online last December and I got it for $14. The juice in there really does smell like the original, but I have no way of comparing it other than to believe Brutworld. You should also check and see what a bottle of Brut Dominant goes for now since they pulled it.
+Shave- a-thon I had bought some of the Brut from India to try out. Bought it on amazon back in June and still has t arrived. Talk about slow
I fell in love with Old Spice as a little girl back in the early eighties. I decided when I was four or so that my future husband would have to wear it for me (yes, I'm laughing about this now). I ordered the new stuff online for kicks and the mailman pulled up with it while I was watching your video. I'm disappointed that the modern scent smells almost completely like the old timey shaving cream base with almost none of the (ahem) *SPICE*. What gives? This is not what I recall AT ALL. I mean, the shaving cream base is nice and seems legit if memory serves, but the scent feels incomplete and wrong without the spiciness. Also, you're right, even what I'm calling the shaving cream base scent is much weaker than in the original one. But thank you for letting me know that I might be able to find the vintage stuff online that smells better with that husky-sexiness that this new stuff doesn't have.
I wonder if the reason the vintage versions smell stronger is due to evaporation of the carrying agent. For example, if the alcohol slowly disappears over time, it's likely the perfume odor would become stronger. It is possible the ingredient make-up remains the same, it's just that it's become more concentrated with the slow loss of the alcohol. At one time, the vintage product may have smelled exactly like the modern version; however, it's now been aged. Just a thought!
I’m not sure on that
@@kensurfs I do much wood finishing with OB Shine Juice... a combination of shellac, boiler linseed oil and denatured alcohol. Once the container is open, the alcohol evaporates fairly quickly... in fact if it sits for more than a few weeks I'll have to add more alcohol to compensate for the loss in level. I would suggest if you were to compare vintage with modern aftershave solutions, I'd try to find vintage unopened bottles to ensure the best composition - I suspect that would be a difficult task. I did enjoy your video; just makes me wonder if you're comparing apples to apples. Good luck... I've learned much from your videos.
@@jydymyyyr9630 👍👍
I think it's a different formula. The old version was very heavy with Bay Rum, which is a great smell all it's own. Today there's only a hint of it. You can tell there's some Bay Rum in it, but not much.
In 1968 brut made brut 33 and sold along with regular brut. It was 33% less strength than the original, for budget minded people. somewhere in the early eighties they went back to the regular strength. ( Brut was bought out by four or five companies. The splash on today is brut 33. the other variation im not sure about but are stronger.
I love the originals👍
Huh. That's not really budget minded. It's like concentrated/ non concentrated antifreeze. One is a dollar more but you effectively get twice the product if you can figure out water.
Was that James Gardner on the old spice commerical? Was his voice for sure
👍👍
Mix ya some Brut and Old Spice together and you will have you some High Karate!
Greg Wallace An aftershave cocktail..lol
Thank you. is this true ? I have never had HAI KARATE ¿ Do you mean to mix half of each one and do you mean to mix the old version or the new version of old spice by P&G ? because the new version smells sweeter and less spicy. I got old spice made in India and this is close to the original by shulton, very good I will appreciate if you help with this because Hai Karate is expensive and difficult to get, specially in Mexico. Thank you. It is good to learn tricks, specially when some colognes do not exist or are not produced.
HORACIO MONT I just mix half and half. They mix well and smell good mixed together. I buy a small spray bottle at walmart in the isle where they sell the travel size shampoo and toothpaste.
Kensurfs Hey don't knock it until you try it.....
Greg Wallace That is awesome, plus it will last twice as long👍👍
The modern Brut is actually Brut 33 so it's not near as strong as the original formula. With that said you can buy the Fabergé Cologne in stores still. I've sent it a few times
Very cool. Thank you👍
You should see if you can get the Indian Old Spice aftershave. I have some and it's great and definitely more potent than the stuff sold in North America, but I don't have any vintage Shulton to compare it with.
Thanks Mark, I will have to try some.
i from turkey..yes i remember old spice 90-93..indian version shulton..??
Have you considered that the older aftershaves smell stronger than the newer version due to the alcohol evaporating over the years? The bottles are not sealed perfectly, and evaporation will occur. With the lower alcohol content, you are left with a less diluted amount of perfume oils. Not a higher volume of oils, but a higher concentration of oils per liquid volume.
Brad Mason That is probably the reason. I hadn’t thought of that👍👍💈💈
When u buy the new stuff take the cap off and leave it out on counter with it off for a while it'll get a little stronger.
Mikhail Kimbel 👍💈💈
@@kensurfs your videos are awesome man thanks!
Hello ,
I just want to ask about a perfume which was available in the nineties, I can’t remember it’s name, but I recall its package, the package had windmill with British rural home with British flag , and it looks similar to silver Lapidus perfume , if you have any idea about such description, please notify me,
My dad wear only old spice the vintage one and brute
Thank you for the doing this video. I learned a lot. I'm a big fan of a original vintage old spice. Also tried new old spice. As you said it hasn't the original smell. Its different from original. Little bit same. And it is not long lasting. Original one is long lasting. What are the aftershaves or perfumes similar to the origial vintage old spice ? Actually i like it very much because it had a smell of manliness . Thank you !
Ken, I think that’s a pretty accurate review of the two Bruts.
They're most likely the same. The older versions do not have the alcohol content that they once did. Simply opening the container will allow the carrier to off gas. The new bottles have more alcohol simply due to age.
I've been using the old spice one for like 3 years. I found it in the basement while cleaning out my dad's things and had no idea it was vintage!
Makes me kinda scared to smell the weak modern version lol
EDIT: with the collectibles link I was able to determine it's from the 80s. Thanks for the video!
👍👍
I have a bottle of Old Spice (in a glass bottle) brought back from India, as well as one of Brut (likewise in a glass bottle) brought back from France and supposedly they still use the original formula for making the after shave in those countries...though I haven't any vintage samples to compare them by. Both are great, though. I'd be curious to know if the versions of either Aqua Velva or Skin Bracer easily available today compare favorably with those of bygone years.
hi ken , i just bought some "fine platinum " and some "creed aventus parfum 120 ml " for .. £205.00 and the fine for £17.95 ...... that aventus will be in a safe and the cap locked with a padlock for sure :O)
That Creed is awesome but very expensive. Way to go!,
the fine platinum is a aftershave like creed ... anyway i start a new job tomorrow ... hoping it'll be ok , less travelling to work ... i can walk it to the job in 10 minutes instead of commuting into london for an hour ... go figure .
I'm new to this what do I get brut splash on or brut aftershave I need a after shave and I don't know the difference
Either works great
My father used to smell old spices and here in Honduras is impossible to find out. Very sad

Great video. My grandfather wore old spice. I am planning on getting some soon.
Phillip Dodds I really still enjoy it👍💈
I use brut classic and my wife loves it! Makes her want to get closer for a whiff of it 😉
I think it smells better than Old Spice.
I can second this. Your wife loves it when i wear it aswell
Loved the Namath commercial
Braedon Masset I remember seeing it on tv when it was on the air.
i couldn't tell if your current version of Brut is the splash, aftershave or cologne. I know the splash only lasts minutes, so when you said you smelled it after one hour, I was surprised.
I'm not sure if you read my detailed comments to PaulHFilm's Brut videos, but to save time (and my typing fingers), I'm going to copy and paste them here. I've probably done way too much research on the history of Brut, and have emailed them several times.
I'm surprised you weren't crazy about Brut Dominant. It's one of my favorites. Everyone I know who tries it, loves it. Women also seem to love the smell. I've written Brutworld and suggested they make it in a cologne or Edt strength, but they seem to have discontinued it! I picked up a number of bottles off of Ebay at the beginning of the year as sellers were finding it in 99¢
stores on the west coast. It's a pity, because Dominant and Attitude (along with their Special Reserve) are the only ones they still produce in glass bottles OTHER THAN the big monster 25.6 oz. gift edition bottle of Brut Cologne. I would suggest getting that on sale as Brutworld emailed and said it's the only version currently produced THAT'S BASED ON THE OLD FABERGE FORMULA. It's quite strong and lasts a good while. The same can be said of Brut Special Reserve edc in the green glass bottle, but that has slightly different top notes.
Here's the posts I made to PaulHFilms' videos. I hope it's of interest:
Brutworld USA (Idelle Labs/Helen of Troy) has told me that the 25.6 oz. (757 ml). monster bottle of Brut on steroids in the glass bottle with the medallion that they issue as a gift box IS BASED ON THE ORIGINAL FORMULA BY FABERGE. I hope they're correct. You can see it here. I bought it over the holidays during a phenomenal sale (only paid US $14) and the scent is terrific and lasts for over 5 hours: scene7.targetimg1.com/is/image/Target/14605796?wid=480&hei=480
The splash on in the plastic bottle that you showed is about as strong as mouthwash. It's their weakest version. All the plastic bottles of Brut are made by Idelle Labs/Helen of Troy here in the USA. I had previously thought they were based on Brut 33, a weaker version of Brut issued by Faberge in 1968, but Brutworld said the plastic bottles are a different formula. Some say the Unilever version in the glass bottle is based on Brut 33, but I would have to ask Unilever if that's true. There's also a Brut Special Reserve sold in a glass bottle with a medallion here in the USA and it's stronger than the plastic bottle cologne, but it's a slightly different formula that smells like original Brut as it dries down.

Wikipedia has a brief history of how Brut came to be Brut 33 along with information on the sale by Faberge.

Here's the Paris site:
www.brut-for-men.com/#!models/cee5, If you click on the first picture and keep clicking, it appears you have the EDT.
What I'd like to know is if they mean by "original", is it the actual stronger version released in 1964, before they introduced the weaker Brut 33 in 1968, then sold the line to Unilever and Helen of Troy/Idelle Labs? The new owners are supposedly selling the weaker version around the world according to Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brut_(cologne)
For those that live in the UK, Pakcosmetics seems to have a 2 page selection of the Unilever made Brut aftershaves and EDT's, all in glass bottles: www.pakcosmetics.com/brand/brut/brut
They all smell really good. I just picked up some vintage Hai Karate that I'll be doing a shave video with👍👍
Can you please send me the link of the brut by Faberge Cologne please
You have to check eBay since they don’t make the original anymore
Great Video, Classic Winners!!!
👍👍💈
Thank you ken
Great video
I found a modern european brut with a silver medallion on eBay
Not the gold medallion like the one Paul reviewed but it was affordable
Im guessing its the standard modern brut in the u.s with an original looking bottle ,
I think they are really cool to have on display. It hard to believe you can still find almost full bottles on eBay.
+Kensurfs
It's full bottles of modern brut
But the vintage bottles like the one you have go for $150
+BDM Almaida Wow, they are expensive for sure.
Vintage is the best, long lasting scent, and we want it back in the porcelain decanter.
Hi ken, great video, 2 of the best. I'm planning on purchasing old spice cream from west coast shaving, made in India, there's 2 types from India, I had the one with anchors printed on it, smelt not even remotely close to old spice, in fact it smelt candle wax? Not for me. So I'm hoping the other type is better, I've read it is. I only hope one day I see brut shave cream or soap, not the goo in a can. The shave experience would just about be completed lol. Thanks for your efforts as always, Owen in nz💈
Thanks Owen. I might have to look into that. Do you have a link to the site in India?
+Kensurfs hi ken, no sorry I don't. There's a fair few on eBay, although I had trouble buying it there for whatever reason. West coast shaving only place I know off that stock the one I'm after. That's the problem with being over here the shipping kills it a bit. I try and support cons page the stray whisker when I can, he brings stuff over at a reasonable price. I got my fine American blend of him, otherwise I'd never have got it as nobody will ship it outside of the states. Owen 💈
+Owen Parratt very good. Thank you. I'll keep an eye out.
Just used PAA fresco tonight so this old spice video comes up haha
Great video again ken very enjoyable and watchable!
When i was in my teens i bought a special edition brut bottle it was called "Dels lady killer" this was based on the british sitcom Only fools and horses because derek (del boy) trotter used to wear gallons of brut when entertaining females haha
The bottle itself was just a normal green brut bottle but instead of the standard label it was leopard print with "dels lady killer" on it plus it even had a fake medalion in the shape of a D around it lol
That sounds cool. Can you still find the bottles on eBay?
Kensurfs not sure ken will have a look
Kensurfs hi ken just had a look and that aftershave in that packaging is quite rare! Its listed on amazon but is out of stock as i think they stopped producing them as it was liecenced by the bbc but if you search "dels lady killer romancing set" on google theres a few pictures of it
Once read that if you buy a new bottle of Old Spice after shave to put it in a attic over the summer to "age" it. I did that, left it up there for months over a very hot summer. Not sure if it did anything. Has anyone else ever heard of doing that or done it and what did you think of the results?
Does the age affect the strength of the fragrance?
It weakens it a bit I believe
Did the UK version of Old Spice change?
Its still in a glass bottle here. I distinctly remember buying it for my grandfather when I was young and it saying "Shulton - London Paris" or something along those lines on the back, it had a grey stopper and a yacht on the front. I bought a bottle recently from a supermarket for nostalgia sake and upon smelling it took me right back but since I havent smelled the Shulton one in a long time I cant say for certain if it's changed.
Anyone from the UK have an Old Bottle they could compare?
DarrenCeltic1888 The USA version with the red stopper has a different scent than the original. Not a perfect match but close.👍💈
Thanks for the reply. Really Enjoy your videos.
Always loved the smell of Old Spice since I was really young (I dont think I was even 10 yet) but was never allowed to buy it for myself because it was an "Old Mans" scent, In fact I used to occasionally sneakily splash some on when I was in my grandparents house.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago I was in a supermarket and saw the box on the shelf and immediately thought of my late grandfather, I decided what the heck and bought it. When I smelled it I was immediately taken back when I popped the lid off. I've been using it for a few weeks now and love it, every time I splash it on it gives me a warm feeling because I associate the smell with memory. Its really funny how something as little as a smell can evoke good memories.
DarrenCeltic1888 👍👍Thanks Darren
I had a bottle from uk, about 2009, glass bottle, great scent.
Brut also put out Brut Actif Blue but was discontinued.
I remember that one. All of those would be cool to have on display. They always bring back great memories.👍
Yeah I bought that brut blue in the 90s and I liked it just as much as the original brut
Oh - what a SUPER guy you are! LOVED your interesting Video of comparisons! I came here to see if the ‘Old Spice’ that’s currently on the Market was as good as the original; my old Dad used to use it, (lost him years ago) and it always reminds me of him. :-) I hate it when they change the bottle and say ‘original’; if they keep the fragrance, then they really should release the original packaging too to go with it in my opinion. I’d love to know if like the BRUT you mentioned after using both the new and the old ‘Old Spice’ ended up with the same strength? Thanks also for telling us about the Link to the ‘Old Spice’ Site - didn’t know about that - very useful!
Thanks ever so much again - really appreciated the comprehensive info. and Reviews you gave on the Products. Please stay safe and healthy.
