In the 80s, I received a bottle for Christmas as a stocking stuffer. I remember it being in a clear splash bottle. I remember it being spicy and musky and (at the time) smelling cheap. Coincidentally, 2 years ago, I received a $300 bottle of Creed Viking for a Christmas gift…and I get the same vibe. Lol.

Good review. People knock it for being cheap and unsophisticated, but there’s something to be said for a fragrance that’s been around since the 1930s that your grandfather and dad wore. Nostalgia and tradition have some value here.

Old Spice was the first fragrance I remember ever smelling. My grandpa had it with his shaving kit. I remember as a kid of 8 or 9 years old and thinking you have to be a really old and important person to wear something like this. I keep meaning to pick up a bottle just to have it but I think I'm going to find a vintage bottle. i love the old look with the blue still on the label. Loved this video. This brings back lots of memories for me! My grandfather had a bottle of Old Spice next to his badger shave brush and Gillette Fat Boy safety razor! He would always splash this stuff on after he'd shave! I had a bottle (splash on is the way to go for old school guys like me, in my opinion).
I just gave my son my bottle of splash on and he loves it!
Old Spice is a great after shave. This was my "go to" on the weekend and it is a great entry fragrance, especially for the guy starting to shave with a safety razor! But I tend to reach for a Bay Rum after shave if I just want to shave and go and still smell manly!
Thanks for reviewing this one! I wore this one a lot when I lost my grandfather so it is sentimental for me when I smell it. He even had a bottle in his pickup truck!

Old spice is a must have in my shave den, this is very big in the traditional "Wet Shave community" I like you had to shave in the 9th grade and used a What would be a Vintage Gillette Tech Razor and Old Spice after shave then went with Jovan Musk oil lol. Many Artesian Shave soap company's are reproducing the original scent and they are great. I happen to use Old Spice shave Cream as well it comes in a tube and works great with an old school shave brush. I have My dad's Old Spice shave soap cup were he would whip up his lather and shave. I too have fond memories of my late dad. He would remove the razor blade from his Gillette DE Safety razor and let me shave with the old spice shave soap he had left.

Have the cologne splash version, can't remember where I picked it up. Maybe Wal Mart years ago? Pretty much never use the cologne. I am an avid user Old Spice after shave though. The label is wrong, our dad didn't use Old Spice or after shave. Our dad always used Gillette Foamy Regular (red/black/white can) shave cream. I always remember his smell after shaving. To me it smelled like Old Spice and that's why I use Old Spice today. I tend to use electric razors as well, have a big collection of probably 40 vintage (Schick/Gillette/Gem) and some modern (Edwin Jagger/Merkur) safety razors, but electrics are just simpler to use and give me a smoother shave overall.

Old Spice, Brut, Skin Bracer (which I still love the smell of) and all 3 Aqva Velvas were essentially the beginning of my journey into day-wear perfume. This is one where you can grab a Shulton vintage on eBay for fairly light $ and it is a lot richer and deeper than the CVS ones today. I have an uncle that used to have this aftershave (in the 70s) and the smell was kind of musk-woody in the dry down, now I tried the aftershave a few months ago (just to bring back memories) and really it has changed a lot, it got now too much nutmeg and cinnamon, in my perspective it has a long-lasting flowery/sweet smell that ain't bad but I cannot find that woody base at all; I guess the reformulations and time have done some damages to this aftershave that belongs on an altar as one of most iconic shaving rituals for the morning man.
it's a real pity that the monstrosity called reformulation has destroyed and still damaging a lot of icons and gems from the past in the fragrances' world.
It's a crime against the man's right to smell good, and it should be stoped at once.

I spent a couple of days researching whether or not it's worth finding a vintage bottle of Old Spice as eBay is awash with them in the UK, but the consensus online was the current Indian "Rubicon Formulations, Ltd" bottle that's labelled "Original" was best (also made of glass), however I found a blog "From Pyrgos" that basically said 'just get whatever is easiest and cheapest to find' and that the "Classic" bottle sold everywhere in the US is better than "Original".
All the reading and conflicting information turned me off buying any version haha, good to hear the standard "Classic" version lasts a decent amount of time so if I see it I'll pick it up. Always appreciate your reviews!

@@ScentsOfSouthJersey agreed Polo scents were great up until the new millennium. After that they started producing numerous scents like blue, black, double black, and red, which albeit all smelled good and crowd pleasing (Double black was an Armani Code Clone), were the weakest scents on the market and to this day are rarely discounted. Same for Cavin Klein. Anything past the 2002 release Truth, which was shockingly good, is utter garbage. What shocks me is that Polo is one of the best sellers at the mall I work at. Usually outselling the likes of Chanel, Dior, YSL, Armani, and Versace. Polo Red is particularly popular and literally last an hour on skin at best. Ahhh my grand uncle’s signature scent. Whenever my dad has to travel overseas he will get a call from my grand uncle asking him to bring back two bottles of Old Spice aftershave. Guess that stuff must have been extremely effective for him.
By the way, have you tried Pierre Cardin Pour Monsieur from 1972? It comes in this bizarre (almost phallic) bottle shape but the juice smells really amazing with dry woods and patchouli. Among the vintage scents, it definitely stands out on its own.

So many people’s families have had one or a few people that have used old spice their whole life it’s really cool. And I have in a store I’m sure it’s the current version and I have tried the body spray most recently, it sort of had a cola vibe to it. The bottle is like an old microphone lol

I dont own the original but my father gave me a bottle that my grandfather owned before he passed away called old spice leather cologne by shulton. Came out in 1985 the year i was born and fragrantica doesnt even have it listed but basenotes does. There are still a few bottles left on ebay but most are gone. Not my favorite leather but i love the idea and its such a sentimental fragrence for me. I need to get my nose on this. Let me ask you this .. if i have creed viking does it smell exactly like old spice where i dont need this or what ? Lol

The Brut that is out now is actually Brut 33 that came out in 1968. It has 33% of the fragrance of the original product. The Original Brut came out in 1964 cost over $100. When I was little I remember my dad wearing Brut, Old Spice, Avon Wild Country, and some other Avon Scents, that I can't remember the name of. The first time I decided to wear any aftershave was for a school dance I didn't know how little you were supposed to put on and I put on way too much and when I went into the living room, my dad said I smelled like a French Wh*re House. Brut was also way too strong of a scent for my young nose to handle. But now wearing Brut, Old Spice, and Avon Wild Country brings back fond memories of my dad.

I was lucky enough to find 2 full decanters of the Shulton version. I found them that a local antique store and only paid $7 or each one. One is the Lantern from 1978 - 1980 and the other one is the Admiral's Flask from 1986 - 1991. I also have an Old Spice shaving mug still in the box, with the soap still in the mug that has never been used from 1956 - 1960. The Shulton formula has a stronger scent, than the P&G formula.

It's one of those scents where the vintage formula actually smells a lot different and of course way better. I have a shulton bottle from the mid 60s and it completely knocks the modern formulation out. Way more depth and more intensity of the scent, the modern one has maybe like 5% of the shulton's scent in it lol, super watered down. Also here in Europe the modern formulas are called Old Spice Original (vs Classic in US) :) also I gotta say that the current deodorant sticks actually smell really good though and more Shulton like.

If I ran out of Old Spice Splash back in the 70's and I ran the tap over the empty bottle, then put the plug back in and shook the bottle vigorously- I could have applied the same version of the the scent that you are reviewing currently. The modern stuff(much like the modern Brut) is not even a clone of the original, it's an insult to it. I don't care if they gave it to you for free.

The Shulton iteration is vastly superior to the present formulation. I recall reading years ago that this was originally marketed to women, and it never really took off. Some Madison Avenue whiz kid repackaged it for men and it took off like wildfire. The same is true of Marlboro cigarettes and the Ford Mustang.
