While you're going to sleep
your mind keeps you awake,
and it makes your heart beat
fast and loud.
There's nothing you can do,
but the only thing you found:
playing Slayer at full volume helps
to drown it out.

This song comes from around the time when I knew Lucy. We were both members of the same evangelical theatre group for teens. I was waiting/hoping she would write something about this time in her life lol!

@@zainab5017 Surreal lol! Lucy I always knew was talented, but I didn't know she would end up a famous indie musician one day lol. Someday she will be playing on the mainstream radio stations I'm sure. I can't believe 15 years ago I was sitting across from her in the green room in-between scenes lol. She was super into Christianity at the time and I wasn't a believer at the time... Now we have flipped. I believe now and she doesn't anymore.

Favorite song on the album. I was also raised in a super Christian household and I saw (and sadly relate to) so many of the things Lucy describes here, plus it's just straight ear candy.

My god this shit is incredible. The subject matter, the clever lyrics, the melody, the song structure the use of distortion as a storytelling device! I’m blown away. I’m tuned in now!

i keep coming back to this song over and over. it wasn’t slayer for me but the sounds of not approved music really did soothe the anxiety of wanting to leave religion as a teenager

The drums are simple but I like the quality of their sound a lot. The snare reminds me of some Neil Young songs, I think.

Not Passport in particular, but the general sentiment of your comment, yes. I've listened to this song multiple times in the last few days. It's such a strange experience. On one hand it all feels so familiar but on the other hand it feels like it all happened to a different person a lifetime ago. In combination these provide a strange place to exist cognitively.

Ummmm, seriously one of the best songs I have ever heard. Pretty video too
to me this music video and the music itself reflects this feeling of having something that you were told you wanted like going to heaven in this case. but whatever you do to get there will never be enough. you start to see this dream disappear like it never existed. at first you blame yourself but then you start to realize this wasnt even something you wanted. none of it you wanted. but now your partner or friend is also dealing with this and you feel like you cant leave them behind in this struggle even though you were along. but you end up along in your journey anyway. surrounded by darkness but this time it is comforting.
this was not meant to be a trauma dump it is more of a observation

I watched "Jesus Camp" the movie from 2006 and then typed in "trauma from Vacation Bible School" and it brought me here. Wow. This is brilliant and so accurate. I commend you for writing this and I'm sorry to everyone that has Religious Trauma Syndrome from their years being indoctrinated and brainwashed into religion.
