the comments don’t fully understand the complexity of this song. it’s not simply about self sabotaging your relationships, it’s also about being the only one that tries and cares. the person she’s talking to doesn’t make a mistake BECAUSE they’re not as invested as her ("ill be the water main that’s burst and flooding//you’ll be by the window, only watching”). the song literally ends with a line "and [you] make me the only heartbreaker//so i’ll be the only heartbreaker" which i interpret as them both being responsible for the separation, just in different ways. also in this context heartbreaker can have a second meaning - her breaking her own heart.

Is this a reference to the metaphor she used in Burning Hill? where she is the forest fire (she causes her pain), she is the forest (she is the one receiving her pain) and she’s a witness watching it unfold (all she does is watch her pain unfold, unable to stop it alone). she causes the forest fire in this video, which almost makes her the fire. and she was in that forest until everything eventually burned down.

I understand where you are coming from. I suffer from major depression, and go through really bad phases, and really bad self sabotage when that happens. And I hurt myself and everyone around me, and then I start again trying to be better. I hope you get through this my friend!
I can relate with your story... It feels nice that someone sings about being the villain of the story. It makes me feel human, I can make mistakes too, y'know? I didn't ask to get a mental illness, and it sure isn't my fault, but on bad days it's hard to realize that. It just is nice to feel understood. And I truly hope my friends and family will one day be able to understand and forgive me, as I'm trying my best to keep swimming and stay afloat. (blue period reference ;-) )
I watched this video with my partner upon release, it's sad because we parted ways two days ago. We had tickets to a Mitski concert next year in Belgium, now it makes sense that I'll end up traveling alone and crying my guts out in the concert.
I told him once that this song seemed perfectly fitted for him, as he always felt like the villain in our story when we had problems, and he carried so much guilt within. After finding out that he cheated on me for 6 months, when we had been dating for 6 years, it finally makes sense.
I can only say I loved him until the end, while he burned all our trust, becoming the only heartbreaker indeed. Sorry for oversharing!! This is very embarrassing but omg the feels upon watching this again... I can't believe how every new episode of my life resonates so well with every new Mitski song, I feel understood YuY

This song makes me think about my last relationship in high school, I was the only one really trying. The worst thing she ever said to me was “you weren’t nice before I met you”. I was driving when I got that message and I literally had to stop and cry. It’s such a vivid memory I even remember exactly what street I was on. I interpret "The Only Heartbreaker" as a toxic relationship where Mitski's partner is constantly blaming her for everything going wrong in their relationship. The partner delusionally sees themself as the blameless one when in reality they are both to blame. I interpret this song with a sense of sarcasm from Mitski, who also, amidst this toxic relationship, begins to believe the lies her partner has been telling her which makes it all the more confusing, not knowing whether to trust herself or her partner's lies.

I don't really see this as a song about self sabotage but a person who is in an unhealthy relationship.
It's a relationship where their partner finds faults in everything they (even just existing in the video). Their partner uses these perceived flaws to make them the scapegoat for all the relationship's problems.
Unfortunately, they want so desperately for the relationship to continue that they are willing to accept all blame no matter what. Even though this role of being the active "bad guy" or "the only heartbreaker" hurts them deeply (the water main burst and flooding) while their partner is absolved of any and all wrongdoings or atonement (by the window, only watching). They also accept that "for as long as [they're] together" this dynamic will never improve.

It's crazy that Mitski sees how loneliness not only is a pain, but a condition that makes her the entire world. It's kinda ultrarromantic, but a different click. Her emotions don't make the surroundings hostile. Mitski IS the surroundings, because she knows/feels she's all there is. She's the world that she involuntarily burns entirely and makes art out of the fire. But as she is all, the process burns her own self.

I kind of interpret this as a person who intentionally destroys things in their life so that they can be the “only heartbreaker”, or the only person that can ruin things. As someone that self-sabotaged as a defense mechanism so that I can be the one in control, this is just what I got from the song and the video. Although the word heart breaker seems to mean this is about sabotaging relationships specifically? Or maybe “hurting others before they can hurt you” type of thing. I’m not fully sure but I heavily relate lol

I interpreted it as a relationship where one person could do no wrong- either in the eyes of their partner or their own perception of themselves. Thus, the other partner is the ‘only heartbreaker’ or the only one in the relationship doing any wrong, making them feel worse about themselves- like they destroy everything they touch. She isn’t a heartbreaker, but she’s set out to be one since her partner is so ‘perfect’. But I definitely feel that the self-destruction to be in control also works really well and I can relate to it in that way as well :)

It personally hit me as someone who is struggling with falling out of love with or doing something awful, like cheating, to the other person who seems perfect to the first person. i genuinely do think it's just about how sometimes YOU are the problem and nobody else, in the relationship. i know people always want to shift blame, and to find a middle ground, to make things seem fair, but i truly think this is just about how at times, your relationship crumbles because of your mistakes. in the song she says that the partner can do nothing but watch her as she is destroying everything around her, and i know alot of people have said they think the other person in the relationship is maybe less caring than her, as she constantly tries... i actually don't think so. what else can you do than to grow tired from trying, when all the other person does is hurt you with their mistakes? what else can a person do when you're constantly dancing in your own fire (which i assume is her loneliness and misery, where she feels best), than to just watch, after having tried to fix the relationship? you can't blame the other person for growing tired of you running way and self destructing. in a way i see this as her, maybe not necessarily accepting, moreso aknowledging how much her own lack of healing has destroyed a relationship that could have had both sides completely involved. but it ends in you dancing in your own forest fire, over and over, until eventually the relationship ends, and your entire world dissapears. something you were so invested in, something you felt all these intense emotions for, doesn't exist. and you cease to exist, too.
What I took from this mitski video was sort-of like having too many emotions to handle so you swallow it inside bearing it deep down in your stomach until it eats you and concomes you as a person eventually letting loose crumbling the world around you. Having all the anger frustration resentment and plain out pain release onto those around you feeling as if it's all your fault and there's no hope left.

I think it's interesting, considering her commentary about how sometimes when you're the only one constantly making mistakes it's because you're the only one invested in the relationship and revealing yourself, that if the world she's destroying is a symbol for that relationship, she's the only one there.
