I watched this video with my partner upon release, it's sad because we parted ways two days ago. We had tickets to a Mitski concert next year in Belgium, now it makes sense that I'll end up traveling alone and crying my guts out in the concert. I kind of interpret this as a person who intentionally destroys things in their life so that they can be the “only heartbreaker”, or the only person that can ruin things. As someone that self-sabotaged as a defense mechanism so that I can be the one in control, this is just what I got from the song and the video. Although the word heart breaker seems to mean this is about sabotaging relationships specifically? Or maybe “hurting others before they can hurt you” type of thing. I interpreted it as a relationship where one person could do no wrong- either in the eyes of their partner or their own perception of themselves. Thus, the other partner is the ‘only heartbreaker’ or the only one in the relationship doing any wrong, making them feel worse about themselves- like they destroy everything they touch. She isn’t a heartbreaker, but she’s set out to be one since her partner is so ‘perfect’. But I definitely feel that the self-destruction to be in control also works really well and I can relate to it in that way as well :)

It personally hit me as someone who is struggling with falling out of love with or doing something awful, like cheating, to the other person who seems perfect to the first person. I know that this is an incorrect statement and relationships is always about 50/50, but in my case (and in case of any type of same relationship dynamic) sometimes you can do nothing, he/she is just an asshole and you simply love them. So yeah, of course you have relationships when one is "always" in wrong because they "the only one" trying. And it's simply not true if the other person still decide to stay and put some work in. Both positions are incorrect and it always depends. We should not victimize ourselves, it's really not a good thing to do, just leave partner you not satisfied with. I don't really see this as a song about self sabotage but a person who is in an unhealthy relationship. It's a relationship where their partner finds faults in everything they (even just existing in the video). Their partner uses these perceived flaws to make them the scapegoat for all the relationship's problems. Unfortunately, they want so desperately for the relationship to continue that they are willing to accept all blame no matter what. Even though this role of being the active "bad guy" or "the only heartbreaker" hurts them deeply (the water main burst and flooding) while their partner is absolved of any and all wrongdoings or atonement (by the window, only watching). I relate to your understanding of the song. I ended 5 months ago playing a game of mouse and cat game with my ex who I loved so much, it caused me depression. I no longer wanted to be a second option despite all my love for her. She is a beautiful girl who can easily gets anybody she wants in a finger snap(she has already). when i was a kid, my parents would always tell me that i “broke everything i touched”. ive carried that my whole life, and this video and mitskis interview about it really hits home to me. what if the only reason we’re always the one doing the heartbreaking is that we’re the only ones brave enough to be honest? what if things need to break in order to become the best version of themselves. kintsugi. it’s a gut wrenching realization, but not necessarily a negative experience.

i genuinely do think it's just about how sometimes YOU are the problem and nobody else, in the relationship. i know people always want to shift blame, and to find a middle ground, to make things seem fair, but i truly think this is just about how at times, your relationship crumbles because of your mistakes. in the song she says that the partner can do nothing but watch her as she is destroying everything around her, and i know alot of people have said they think the other person in the relationship is maybe less caring than her, as she constantly tries... i actually don't think so. what else can you do than to grow tired from trying, when all the other person does is hurt you with their mistakes? what else can a person do when you're constantly dancing in your own fire (which i assume is her loneliness and misery, where she feels best), than to just watch, after having tried to fix the relationship? you can't blame the other person for growing tired of you running way and self destructing. in a way i see this as her, maybe not necessarily accepting, moreso aknowledging how much her own lack of healing has destroyed a relationship that could have had both sides completely involved. but it ends in you dancing in your own forest fire, over and over, until eventually the relationship ends, and your entire world dissapears. something you were so invested in, something you felt all these intense emotions for, doesn't exist. and you cease to exist, too.

What I took from this mitski video was sort-of like having too many emotions to handle so you swallow it inside bearing it deep down in your stomach until it eats you and concomes you as a person eventually letting loose crumbling the world around you. I kind of interpret this as a person who intentionally destroys things in their life so that they can be the “only heartbreaker”, or the only person that can ruin things. As someone that self-sabotaged as a defense mechanism so that I can be the one in control, this is just what I got from the song and the video. Although the word heart breaker seems to mean this is about sabotaging relationships specifically? Or maybe “hurting others before they can hurt you” type of thing. I’m not fully sure but I heavily relate lol

But I definitely feel that the self-destruction to be in control also works really well and I can relate to it in that way as well :)

It personally hit me as someone who is struggling with falling out of love with or doing something awful, like cheating, to the other person who seems perfect to the first person. I know that this is an incorrect statement and relationships is always about 50/50, but in my case (and in case of any type of same relationship dynamic) sometimes you can do nothing, he/she is just an asshole and you simply love them. So yeah, of course you have relationships when one is "always" in wrong because they "the only one" trying. And it's simply not true if the other person still decide to stay and put some work in. Both positions are incorrect and it always depends. We should not victimize ourselves, it's really not a good thing to do, just leave partner you not satisfied with. But also be conscious enough to understand that maybe you actually are a "villain" playing victim cart as "the only heartbreaker".

It’s funny how you can see how people view themselves in their interpretations. Some people see it as a self destruct story, some see it as the effort to keep something alive when they’re the problem. Others think it’s a situation where she’ll except being the villain if it means the other person will stay. Another one I saw was “you’re the only one making mistakes because you’re the only one trying.” And that one really got me. In all of them, you can see how these people view themselves and their experiences
I see it as one person always saying the wrong thing even though they deeply care about the other but the fact the other doesn't mess up is concerning because it feels like they aren't emotionally invested at the same level

I don't really see this as a song about self sabotage but a person who is in an unhealthy relationship.
It's a relationship where their partner finds faults in everything they (even just existing in the video). Their partner uses these perceived flaws to make them the scapegoat for all the relationship's problems.
Unfortunately, they want so desperately for the relationship to continue that they are willing to accept all blame no matter what. Even though this role of being the active "bad guy" or "the only heartbreaker" hurts them deeply (the water main burst and flooding) while their partner is absolved of any and all wrongdoings or atonement (by the window, only watching). They also accept that "for as long as [they're] together" this dynamic will never improve.

i've read many interpretations of the song and i enjoy seeing other people's view so i might aswell express my own.
i see it as someone who tries to detach themself from whom they deeply love, saying to themself that they' break their loved one's heart, they won't depend on the other anymore, they don't need them, they are and deserve better, even thought fully knowing that they wouldn't be able to actually say that.
so they imagine these scenarios to make themselves feel stronger and empowered while being the complete opposite in real life.

I relate to your understanding of the song. I ended 5 months ago playing a game of mouse and cat game with my ex who I loved so much, it caused me depression. I no longer wanted to be a second option despite all my love for her. She is a beautiful girl who can easily gets anybody she wants in a finger snap(she has already). She is a heartbreaker as she attracts attention from ladies very easily .I can't complain zz I attract both but I am not playing by external traits and so, I had to let her go... It sometimes hurt but I don't want to be a second option as I deserve better and she proved me she wasn't up to the task fully. So that song holds an even depper meaning to me now...

i genuinely do think it's just about how sometimes YOU are the problem and nobody else, in the relationship. i know people always want to shift blame, and to find a middle ground, to make things seem fair, but i truly think this is just about how at times, your relationship crumbles because of your mistakes. in the song she says that the partner can do nothing but watch her as she is destroying everything around her, and i know alot of people have said they think the other person in the relationship is maybe less caring than her, as she constantly tries... i actually don't think so. what else can you do than to grow tired from trying, when all the other person does is hurt you with their mistakes? what else can a person do when you're constantly dancing in your own fire (which i assume is her loneliness and misery, where she feels best), than to just watch, after having tried to fix the relationship? you can't blame the other person for growing tired of you running way and self destructing. in a way i see this as her, maybe not necessarily accepting, moreso aknowledging how much her own lack of healing has destroyed a relationship that could have had both sides completely involved. but it ends in you dancing in your own forest fire, over and over, until eventually the relationship ends, and your entire world dissapears. something you were so invested in, something you felt all these intense emotions for, doesn't exist. and you cease to exist, too.

What I took from this mitski video was sort-of like having too many emotions to handle so you swallow it inside bearing it deep down in your stomach until it eats you and concomes you as a person eventually letting loose crumbling the world around you. Having all the anger frustration resentment and plain out pain release onto those around you feeling as if it's all your fault and there's no hope left.
