he mentioned his sister and it made me think, is his entire family full of elegant vampires with extensive vocabularies as well or are they like the average person?

It’s due to what it’s made of. A true antique would be made of a heavier, sturdier wood made to last decades.

When I was pregnant with my 10 year old, my grandfather gave me his mother's rocking chair and my dad completely refinished it in cherry to go with my daughter's crib. Later, I had also inherited my grandmother's mother's folding rocking chair from the early 1920s. She was only 4'11" and it was made for her, so it was little, but in only 5'1" so it's The perfect size. The fabric wasn't in good shape and one leg was broken in half, so I left it with my parents when I was moving between apartments and kind of forgot they even had it. That Christmas, they gave it back. My dad had restored all of the wood and fixed the break. You couldn't even tell after he refinished it all! My mother redid the upholstery. It was just beautiful. I thought it was in my storage unit with my other furniture so my mind was extra blown. I still have both.

You are helping me get back to refinement and are such a blessing. What an amazing looking piece of furniture. You have taken me back to my childhood because my Great Great Grandfather(from Cullen) was a carpenter and built many beautiful pieces of antiques for Hotels and for their own home. Thank you so very much for this as I am so keen to learn what my Great Great Grandfather did. I too think it's very sad that there are so many sacred antiques just thrown either to 2nd hand shop's or forgotten about. I myself love the antique dresser I have and my drawers. I'm loving your tutorial because I'm on the lookout for certain pieces then try and do the lacquer process you have shown. I would absolutely love love love to see your own works of art..that would be such a special treat. With love and Kindest regards Luna..Namaste ❤🙏🌹

Not sure if you'll see my comments John, but I'll ramble on anyway. I have the same style. Very much into more detailed, ornate, embellished, antique style things...not just furniture, but pretty much anything. I refurbished a TV cabinet that I bought last year, it's solid quality wood and the woman I bought it from considered herself a furniture restorer. She had spray painted it black and blue and had these god awful country style metal stars nailed to the cabinet doors. I patiently and lovingly sanded it down completely, laquered it, painted the doors and inside, and painted the center and corners of the doors using a beautiful medallion stencil. It looks completely different now. It was the first time I'd redone a piece of furniture and I absolutely loved it. It was definitely a labor of love and something I'm excited to do again.

I once made a ball of wood with my grandpa and he encarved my lucky number in it. I remember lacquering it so thickly I almost passed out from the fumes xD. After I filed it down it looked so elegant I decided It would be what I pass on to my children.
Filing a sphere so it looks smooth was hell on earth it took me 4 days to make it even, (I eventually ended up with an almost smooth paper to have the finest grain ^^). Today I'm 20, it was 7 years ago but I'm still so proud of myself, It was the first time in my life I showed so much patience and effort on something, trully changed my mind. :D

Oh, a man of my own heart. I enjoy makeup, furniture and home restoration, anything artistic such as paintings and drawings or sculptures... I enjoy things a person can find beauty in. I also enjoy gardening and love animals.
You come off as educated, refined and as someone who enjoys making things lovely/lovelier.
I would very much enjoy a future film about the process of epoxy coating the top of the table! I could probably watch you in films doing or talking about nearly anything, but I enjoy films or instructional demonstrations on fixing or restoring items. This was wonderful 💕

If he isn't the most gorgeous androgynous person I've ever seen in my entire life then I'm not turning lesbian or bi curious of whatever humdrum labeling you wanna come up with. Like, he seriously needs to start narrating books or the news just so I can hear his voice everyday or at least see that gorgeous face light up the daily news. I guess I will settle for youtube and stalking his IG 😍

What a wonderful tutorial, thank you! And very smart to lacquer a repro: many antiques have been ruined, and lost their value, due to refinishing. It's the patina and history of the piece that makes it worth so much. Cheers♡

I'm glad you mentioned guitars! I love my nitro-lacquered Gibson guitars!!! They even smell great when you first open the cases. Just makes the wood "pop", and also makes it easier to wipe away finger prints and other smudges. I just feel a lacquered guitar is a little more classy than a poly-coated or satin-finished guitar. But each to his own. Having said this, I have had some non-finished instruments that really felt great in my hands and actually played quite well.

I like that you mentioned the different types of lacquer and guitars. As most serious guitarists will confirm, older guitars used nitrocellulose lacquer and this is highly desirable. Supposedly the thin coat of nitro makes the wood ‘breathe’ and sound better. I find that it has a different texture and even a different smell than acrylic. I’ve had guitars for over 20 years that still look shiny with acrylic but the one guitar I’ve had for a few years has a thin skin of nitro and it’s already looking dull where my arm rubs constantly.

I love antiques and antique furniture. I bought some very old clothing trunks dating back to the late 1800’s & I refinished my 1st one & it came out beautiful! I still have one more left in my garage that I have only sanded thus far. I may actually try using lacquer this time, I think the end result would be quite different & yet still beautiful! But I intend to finish it up when the weather breaks this Spring! I love this video! This was fun! Thanks John & much love from Connecticut 💚😊xo

John, please do a lot more furniture videos! They’re great to view and I must say, one loves the detail and depth you go into describing the process. Such a shame to see a lot of beautiful pieces going to waste and I highly approve of people repairing these timeless classics. I’m quite a prude when it comes to furniture I shall admit. The youngest furniture I’d go for is most likely the 1960’s. I do have quite a soft spot for the Art Deco period. I’m currently restoring a gorgeous 1940’s cabinet which houses a record player and a radio, outstanding craftsman which has unfortunately been neglected. I find my young self having recently bought a home buying a lot of projects. I look forward to your future endeavours!
