I saw the Outsiders sing this in Terre Haute with the Caravan of Stars tour. The Association was there also. I thought Sonny was so cute! I was in Jr. High.
Was that Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars winter bus tour? The Yardbirds were on that tour in late 1966 when guitarist Jeff Beck got so upset with the conditions that he returned to England, leaving Jimmy Page as a solo guitarist when I saw them at Lima, Ohio's Springbrook Gardens Teen Club on Dec. 4, 1966 (you can Google the show poster).
Another legendary and lasting tune from the Summers of '66 and '67.....often repeated but never duplicated.....thanks to all the players that made it all possible.
Summer of '66....Beach-front hotel job, fine ladies, great parties....tooling in my '51 Dodge....indelible memories 50+ years later.....Dedicated to Marine Lance Corporal Wayne Newcomb....RIP
I saw them live in Chicago at Teen World Fair, and I knew they had another hit, but the speaker here is absolutely right, it doesn't get played hardly at all. I knew they had two top twenty hits. And it took a little search to find this. Thanks, brings back memories.
This brings back so many memories. Loved this song. I remember when my sis got to meet Sonny Geraci at some band thing at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. It wasn’t a concert. I don’t remember the event, but it went on for a few days. Bands just walking around. I had been to it the day before and saw local bands walking around, talking to fans. But I didn’t see anyone as big as Sonny. I was jealous.
Once I was hanging out at the Top of the Hill Tavern in Portland, Oregon sipping beers and bar talking with some dude. At some point I told him I grew up in Ohio near Cleveland. This dude rolls up his sleeve and tattooed on his forearm was a old low budget scrub tat of The Buzzard cartoon character from WMMS. I immediately recognized it. Proving without a doubt that I am from Cleveland. I also listened to WGCL as a kid with Uncle Vic. The end of an era when being a radio DJ meant something. Anyway, Cleveland Rocks!!! The heart of Rock’n’Roll. Also, the Michael Stanley Band will rise again. MSB! MSB! MSB!
@@MusicMikeFlashbackFavorites Mike, just wanted to say that the correct proper pronunciation of Sonny’s last name is (Jer ahh chee) Geraci. It’s unbelievable the amount of people that cannot pronounce Italian names properly.
Awesome video of the era that rocks great with this tune. The kids look great, the dance and music just like I remember it. Thanks to Mike and whoever put this incredible piece together.
Great pick Mike - I loved the Outsiders! I must say Time Won't Let Me is my favorite, but I love Sonny's vocals on anything - and still today! Saw him live just a week ago - amazing -
I like this one even more than 'Time Won't Let Me'. thank you, Music Mike! you always make listening to these great oldies even more fun and interesting with your "stories behind the song". keep up the great work!
@luviananna --You're wrong about Freed. He was born in Pennsylvania but moved to Ohio at a young age. His early radio career and the "Moondog" show began on Ohio radio stations in Youngstown, Akron and Cleveland. Yes, Freed worked in New York....but is not a "New Yorker".
I was in a band that opened for them at The Red Dog Inn in Wichita, Kansas in either 66 or 67 (Time won't let me remember the year). Nice bunch of guys. We had a good time with them. We played this song every night. We had a horn section and there weren't many horn songs in that era. Good post.
@luviananna --- My channel is based on the Billboard "HOT 100" Hit Music chart. The Isley Brothers version didn't chart there at all. Yes, it may have made the R&B chart....but we don't follow that chart on "Flashback Favorites". The Outsiders made it to #15.
Hi Mike, thanks for the upload, you know this was a huge hit in 1966 ( I was 21 ) on Long Island NY, I think every Club band covered "What kind of girl is this" ? Being 20 something guys, we inserted our own sometimes x rated adjectives instead of the correct lyrics. I remember going through all 4 gears in my '64 Chevy Impala SS Convert, 327-350hp with this song on the AM car radio, good days !
LMHS63 l was 11 in 1966. The music of the 60s was my only comfort during that time in my childhood. I loved this song. When this song played, I fantasized that I ran a 1964 Ford Galaxy XL with a 390 with dual quads through all four gears(I was a big fan of the blue oval when I was young) like you actually did with your 1964 Chevy Impala. By the way, that 64 Ford Galaxy XL that I "had" would've blown the doors off of your Chevy Impala (ha ha). Seriously, that was a nice car that you had. I wish that I came of age in the early to mid 60s. When I was 21 in 1976, I had a 76 Ford F 100 pick up truck with a 6 hole & 3 on the tree. I couldn't stomach the cars of the mid 70s, low compression engines that didn't have the power to get out of their own way & the hideous boxy styles. That's why I bought a pickup truck, & the 300 CID six hole was grossly under powered! The cars of the mid 70s couldn't hold a candle to your 64 Chevy Impala! Plus the disco music sucked!
Jim, I also have the original 45. The "B" side is "Was It Really Real". Billboard magazine also confirms this as the "B" side. Maybe you have a reissue 45? "Respectable" was released as a single about 6 months after "Time Won't Let Me".
@luviananna --Cleveland disc jockey Alan Freed is widely credited with promoting the new genre (and the term) of "rock and roll". Cleveland was the location of the first rock and roll concert. Civic leaders in Cleveland pledged $65 million in public money to fund the Hall Of Fame. A petition drive was signed by 600,000 fans favoring Cleveland over Memphis, and a USA Today poll which Cleveland won by 100,000 votes. The hall of fame board voted to build the museum in Cleveland. Theme song for the Respectables from Lancaster, PA in the late 60s and early 70s which morphed into the Chateaus and later custer;s last band. I know because I was a part of it.
@luviananna ---Like many things in life, it often has to do with politics and who puts up the most money. Nonetheless, I still think it should be in Cleveland.....even though I am not from there.
The Outsiders 1965 ("Time Won't Let Me" single) Sonny Geraci, lead vocals John Madrid, trumpet Al Austin, lead guitar Gayle Guhde, keyboards Tom King, rhythm guitar, backing vocals, tenor saxophone Mert Madsen, bass, harmonica Ronnie Harkai, drums

When the Outsiders played at the Corral in North Olmsted, I danced with a girl that looks like the shorter haired blonde in the background. Her name began with a C. Maybe Carla.
What kind of girl? Yes, I'm telling you people She's the kind of girl for me She's so respectable -- Did you love her? No, no, no, no, no, no! -- Did you hug her? No, no, no, no, no, no! -- Did you squeeze her? No, no,… she's so respectable

Cleveland Ohios own! ❤️ RIP Sonny.
Extremely underrated group along with the Buckinghams.
Huh, what were they rated?
Rafael, it’s kind of a drag that you’re going to try to piggyback the Buckinghams on the outsiders.

Sonny Geraci. Grew up with you and am so very sad you've left us. For music heaven . . .

He was excellent---Sonny had "IT".--yes his voice lives on.

That blonde is good-looking....!!!!
i couldn't find The Isley's but found The Outsiders, a good band, and a great introduction to the tune
I was a little surprised this never went higher than #15 after becoming well known with Time Wont Let Me. Ahhhh those were the days!!!!

Mike , this a great track, sadly overlooked in uk, as was time wont let me..our loss
It's a great song. It's similar to What Kind Of Love Is This by Joey Dee, but it's pure rock and roll energy rather than a pop ballad.
This song ...scoots along!
Cleveland Rocks! Go Tribe!
Go Browns!
Requiescat in pace, Sonny.

What kind of driving 1/8 note bass monster was this guy? Even some 1/16 in there at the end!
That is one of the greatest bass players and perfectly balanced to appreciate
Dude you are awesome. You know music almost as good as I do, but you're more famous. Good job man.
