60s70sVintageRock, I would really love to say a very huge thank you for uploading this awesome clip on to RUclips. I've loved this song for such a long time, and I've never been able to find any footage of Question Mark & The Mysterians performing this fantastic song until now. This song truly rocks, and please continue to upload whatever beautiful songs you have and can find.
@Adam Hepburn You're very welcome! See the description under the video... I had to fix the link and hopefully it will work... there's a newer performance you might like. You'll need to enter a pw on the page to see it. (I couldn't post it on YT because of copyright restrictions.) I've pretty much uploaded all old vids I had, 8 or 9 years ago, but I always keep my eyes open for any good stuff! Thank you for your nice comment!!
Remember in Oslo way back in -66 when that song soared, I was 17 yrs, working., used all my money on singels and LP's!!
@@torvilasulvstle362you obviously have great taste in music. This song truly rocks without a doubt, and you spending a lot of your hard-earned money on singles and LPs is also what I did during both my teenage years and my young adult years. I spent a lot of my money on albums by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks and so many other great singers and bands from the '60s and later. Rock on, buddy!!
@Fuzzy Butkus That same channel posted a real cool rendition of the Doobies' "Listen to the Music" featuring Doobies lead Tom Johnston. ruclips.net/video/t4sK8d48Exs/видео.html

Bill Cipher sure has interesting taste in music
keyboard cat does a great job covering this song.
And he's got the same shirt, lol.

@@Wyvern188 I had to look that one up, Bento the cat playing this song lol. RIP
The thing that always cracked me up about this song was the specific number of tears
The musical talent we had as teenager back in the 1960's was off the charts!!!
you got that rite
I'm convinced this is one of the greatest recorded songs of its era.
Agreed
Any era...lol

Of all time you mean?!
These guys were from Mexico, immigrant families. Singer lived in Texas awhile, then family moved north to Michigan & work. Not too many more hits, but 96 Tears was on top for weeks. Ninety six tears blear's out of a tube radio in a 55 chevy was the life. Never knew where it came from, just it was there, when there was nothing.
Best reply ever! And that 55 Chevy. For real!
It's fascinating that this band's music was influenced by Mexican American Tejano music. The Tejano influence can be heard in their whirling keyboard runs and beats. The band members were children of migrant farmers who settled in Michigan.
Remember when this song came out listening to it on my clock radio in my room late at night when I was supposed to be asleep turned way down low so my parents couldn’t hear it and having a huge smile on my face and acting like I was playing the organ
🙂👍
So funny but true 👍🏻
Welcome to "Bill Cipher Music Time".

This is My cousin Rudy Martinez :) He made our Family very , very Proud ❤
He was a huge inspiration to me growing up! I wanted to be the “mysterious” rock star with a soul from Mars!
He's a Legend!
Chicano power in the 60s! 🇲🇽 🇺🇸 ❤️
? And the mysterians were very groundbreaking for their time.
Shit I'm 55 I still believe chicano power
Yuuuup, they were all the children of migrant workers up in Michigan. From the fields to national TV in a generation - very American story.
why 96 tears? I get 69. But what up with 96? Anyway, they rock!!
Saginaw Michigan had one of the largest immigration of Mexicans in the early to mid 20'th century to work in the farming industry anywhere outside of the Southwest. I live near and the heritage is still strong there.
I was 10 years old in 1966 and I still remember all the words. I love this song.
Bill's favorite band!!!

the best organ riff ever ! and I'm 73 years old as of Sept 29 2023 have always loved this,,and yes I'm still dancing 😂😂😂
🎉🥂 oh how nice of you and keep going and that's how I'm doing too in my 40's but pray I go into my 50's too and as far as I can with a little dance and movement 😉 🩰
This song has a weird hypnotic effect, like it could go on for days
Yes, hard for me to describe but that’s it
Definitely psychedelic
The keyboards on this song are music to my ears.
This is my grandpa's favorite song. But he passed away 3 days ago. We are playing this song at the wake today during our slideshows. RIP
This is one of the absolute greatest songs of all time and that silly organ riff is the meat and potatos.
So true!
I remember cruising the East Bay the day I got my license in ‘66 listening to this song.
my wife is from Bay City and said the singer was quite a menace haha
"Your gonna Cry! I want to hear you Cry!" The greatest garage rock n roll song EVER!
Great song
Fifty years and way more than 96 tears later, I'm still digging this tune.
Great comment, I hear ya!
Love it😉😉😉
For sure
I live in Northern Ont. Canada, and in the '60's there was a dance hall called Nichol's in Sundridge, Ont. with live groups every Sat. night in the summer and this was always played, and how I misd my teen yrs., things were so much simpler back then.
Yes,a great group and in 60s
The Mysterians deserved better. These dudes were Garage Rock pioneers!
Truth
the record that definitely proved how much power one single note can have.
The fact that they're Latino makes this song even better props to these fellas
Thanks for the recommendation, Bill!
Any negative comments on this song shows ignorance in music. I was still 13 years from birth but this was way ahead of it's time.
Yes,I agree,and a great group 66 year I was born😊
This song was WAY COOL when it was released! Still is in 2021!
@@susansquier2435 yes great song,and group
This was his only song. It's a very good song but the greatest song ever?
@@chiwawa130 I'm definitely not saying best song ever, I'm just saying it was ahead of their time. Shit zeppelin started in the 70s and tool started in the early 90s. That's a lot of songs that are definitely supreme to 96 tears
Man, when I first heard this song, I thought it was one of those songs that is going to be around forever, here it is 2024, and it still sounds good. I am not really sure how they got the title, but there's a town in South Carolina called 96.
Finally found it!!!! I’m 28 and love and appreciate my parents generation ❤️
I work at a small Mexican restaurant in southeast Michigan and I saw a man wearing a shirt with the band name on it. I remembered it and looked it up when I got home. After researching I believe that man was Question Mark himself! I really wish I would've asked him about the shirt at the time.
Number 1 hit 1966 one hit wonder Question mark mysterious
It will always be a mystery
Yes,would be great to have met him.a great group
He lives in Clio i believe
I think Prince got a lotta ideas from my man ? (Formerly Rudy .martinez. I read that or heard it on the radio and never forgot him. He's The FITS, MAN! 🤔😘😜😡😎
He still resides in mid Michigan . His house burned down a handful of years back and he lost all of his memorabilia . The community helped build him a new home
So sad his house burned down, glad he got a new one.A great singer

Wikipedia - ? and the Mysterians (or Question Mark and the Mysterians) are an American garage rock band[6] from Bay City and Saginaw in Michigan, initially active between 1962 and 1969. Much of the band's music consisted of electric organ-driven garage rock and an enigmatic image inspired by the 1957 Japanese science fiction film The Mysterians.[7] In addition, the band's sound was also marked by the raw, resonating lead vocals of "?" (Question Mark, the stage name of Rudy Martínez),[2][3][4] making Question Mark and the Mysterians one of the earliest groups whose musical style is described as punk rock. Their music and imagery were highly influential on later bands.[8]

true for sure
When The Mysterians movie came out we went to see it in the theater. It was quite mind blowing for a young boy. Eventually I bought the VHS and DVD. Also, I loved this song when it came out. The radio stations played it a lot. Simple organ, but mesmerizing.
I remember this song playing on AM radio when I was 10 yrs. old. It brings me back.
THIS is the song that was playing when I turned on my brand new transistor radio. I had received it for my 12th birthday. July 19, 1966. I have loved this song forever! Great song. Thanks for the memory.
Hi, funny how we remember, I got my transistor radio christmas 1968 and turned it on to hear, Judy in disguise.
what a wonderful memory! I remember my dad giving me a portable radio/cassette recorder at 12. The first song I ever recorded was by Led Zeppelin. You should have seen my father's face!!
one of those haunting tunes that will stand the test of time
garage music
The Mysterians still play at the Flint Michigan 629 Eagles club about once a month or so. Q is gone, but the rest of the guys are still going strong. I get to watch and hear 96 Tears in person in 2022!
There are only two original members remaining Frankie and Bobby.
This was the coolest song of those days with "Wooly Bully" and "Louie Louie" Thought these were all "bad boy" garage bands, and cooler than we'd ever be. But "96 Tears" seemed most polished and stripped down. Dances where they played this still reverberate. I can almost visualize the place and the feel that vibe now. Seems simple but these guys knew exactly how to roll it.
This song is 54 years old and it’s still a great song. xx
True.its so weird yet youthful. It could be a hit now with a young set of boys in a group.
Yes,54 like me😊great group
That's why it's a classic boys and girls...👩🏻🏫

Elvis said that this was quite possibly the greatest rocknroll song ever written
The story of these guys is utterly bonkers. True Art ! ❤
Still addicting song after all these years 👍🤓👍👏✨✨
Cry .cry . 😭 Cry👍❣️👍
One of the coolest most unusual songs of the 60s . These dudes rock
One of the coolest songs ever.
This song is dope even in 2023.
Proud Mexican-American band!
One of the first Hispanic bands in the US to hit it big, kids of migrant farm workers in Michigan.
blane262 mexican bands*
Hispanic is a derogatory term.
From Saginaw Michigan !!
The birth of punk music
As a child in the 70's probably heard for the last time. And just on the radio and immediately recognized again because of the organ sequence
9/2023.........I was 13 in 1966,........I'm a couple months away from turning 70. I remember being forced to take "teenager" dance lessons, when this tune came out. I loved the music, but hated the dance lessons, which we had to do after school. The dances of the day were: "The Swim", The Monkey, The Twist,...The Pony. All goofy-ass dances. My dancing skills never got me laid. LOL
Q mark and the mysterians are from Saginaw, Michigan home also to another legend Stevie Wonder wh was born n the north side of the same city. Question mark like many others started in a small garage on the east side of Saginaw, Michigan, making a name for themselves very quickly, they were just part of the neighborhood, blue collar just like most of the Mexican population that traveled north mostly from Texas to work in the GM, ford and chevrolet plants. My dad remembers going to the same garage to hang out. Today they still play there songs, one member is actually part of my family! great memories!
***** you're thinking of sam simudio from sam the sham and the pharohs.....these guys are michigonianites
***** ? Mark and the Mysterians were indeed originally from Corpus Christi, Texas before making the move to Michigan.
***** You are correct... three of the original members are the children of Texas migrant farm workers. The families moved to Michigan when they were very young.
***** My pleasure. :-)
Fifty years later and, still, one of my all-time favorite songs.
I still say this is the funkiest break up song ever!! Awesome groove that still holds up 50 years later.
Love it when the "One Hit Wonder" garage bands get their 15 minutes of fame. And a song that endures for decades as a great rock classic.
Why a the sudden interest… has it been featured on a game/tv series or something popular? Excuse me asking… 🤷🏽♀
@@inthepubagaineh6318 No sudden interest. There's been a steady stream of comments/views for the 11+ years it's been posted. Yes, the song's been featured in a few movies, tv shows, video games, etc. It's a popular oldie. 😉
They made several albums.
It's October, 2017. I'm 65. I hear this. I'm 16 all over. Thanks, guys!
Christopher Lange Funny , I just heard this song today but it was a cover by the texas tornados from the 70s
what the hell are kids listening to? This is like the best music ever. I could listen to this forever.
notmadheardthingsinhell YES INDEED Z
This is the first song I ever learned on the organ, 3 chords, a simple riff, great beat, good singer, now immortal. Who knew?
I'll be 71 this year and still love this song!!!!❤️ Thank you PBS for having these shows!!!👍🏼
Dude could really move . And that organ player was getting it.
The keyboard player is so good I can’t get over it
I was 16 when this was a hit. I am 74 now. This stuff still rocks.. LOL
That song reminds me so much of my youth....sweet, sweet sixties.......................!
If you have a pulse there's no way you can sit still while listening to this tune.
1966, I was 11 yrs old about the time I started listening to rock n roll. Please someone find the time machine and transport me back.
My uncle Rico has a time machine, but it only goes back to 1982

Tonight I'm drinking 96 beers to drown 96 tears ;)
God god almighty when I was a kid I think they played that song every 15 minutes for a decade😢😢
I can't believe this is from 1966.
Why not? So much talent and imagination in the 60's.
Yep. The YR I got out if the military.
Thanks to American President Lines New Years cruise around Hawaii where I won a name that tune contest in the disco. I was the only teen in the room that remembered their name. Yay me.
" 96 tears " , " Louie , Louie " , " Hang on Sloopy " , were all we needed for 7th and 8th grade recreation night at our school .
This song still regularly gets play as one of the best classic tunes. Have loved it since college in the 60’s.
we teenagers played this song constantly at our malt shop in our small town in 1966 .. it cost 5 cents to play a song on the Jukebox at the time
Thanks for sharing your memories. Great times, long gone.
I heard this on my ten transistor radio - and on the loudspeaker on the "Tilt a Whirl" ride at Playland, Rye, NY. When I hear this, I'm a nine-year old again!
It's that organ that makes that song a hit
He'll yes
My Dad taught me how to play this on our organ when I was 10. He was the coolest and I miss him terribly- today is his 79th cosmic birthday- and next year it’s 10 years since he’s been gone. “I’ll just cry…too many tear drops for one heart to be crying”
Stuck inside because of covid19 to cold for cycle. Get drunk listen to old rock FUCK YEAH✌👍
I know exactly how you feel, Bill Bleile. We're all in self-isolation too because of the current Covid-19 situation, so one of the great things I'm definitely doing is rocking along to such fantastic music including this beautiful song by Question Mark & The Mysterians and watching all these fabulous music videos on RUclips. I also wish you all the very best during these very challenging times, and I hope you stay safe and healthy too. Rock on, Bill!!
No Tears Back Then, But Alot Now!
I was 15 when this came out and we listened to AM radio to hear the hits. Rock Music was emerging as a major force . What a time it was ... change was in the air for everything ... music ... fashion ... ideas ... lifestyle ... art .... and so many wonderful friends whose memory I will cherish until the day I move upstairs ...
So this is a true M&M Band. Mexican and Michigan. They created one hell of a good sound. 👍
People bitch about sound quality, but I think that hollow sound is part of what makes the song so cool. It wasn't HD in 1966 so why the fuck do I want to hear it in HD now. I want to hear music the same way everyone else did back then.
Exactly. Thank you!
I've always believed this song was a precursor not only of R.E.M. and the Cure, but also Prince; all of those guys were in grammar/middle/high school at the time this song ruled the charts in late 1966.
They were definitely a successful garage band. Also the Rivieras from South Bend, IN produced California Sun during that era.
Love this song. A great group who achieved great. Still performing. They are so loved. Bobby is great. Hit that has a great memory in our ♥ hearts. Great song.
Two years ago my buddy Bongo struck up a conversation with a guy next to him at a bar in Flint Michigan. He asked the guy why he was wearing sunglasses in a dark bar... guy says that’s what I do. Then a guy comes onstage and introduces Question Mark and the Mysterians... guy gets up on stage and starts singing. Bongo says he’s a great guy!!!
Now let’s get started on 96 beers!
