I always loved it when Paddy would do the vocal “chants” during a piece. I could never get over how such a strong, low sound came from a fairly diminutive man. What an amazing, gifted composer and musician. He could make those Uilleann pipes sing like a bird. If you’ve never seen the PBS Series “The Long Journey Home - The Irish in America” I highly recommend it. Some episodes are up on RUclips. Paddy, the Chieftains and Guests (Sinead O’Connor, Elvis Costello, etc) did all the music, which is sweeping and heartbreaking. RIP Paddy, and Thank you for bringing the soul of Ireland around the world, and sharing it with all of us. 🇮🇪🇨🇦

Absolutely brilliant. These guys were amongst my favourites fifty years ago, and the music's still fresh! They had it all - pipes, fiddles, harp, bodhrán, harp - and the dancers!
I've included this in a playlist "Classic British Folk" and, before anyone complains, I mean "British" in it's broadest sense, as it is to include Brittany, all the British Isles and north-western Spain. They share a musical culture from before England became England.

Paddy has now left town and is playing in a new club in a place called Kingdom Hall which is in the first town you pass through after you drive through Heaven's gate, Paddys gone but his songs, stories and music will last forevermore

The song that starts at around 3:00 minutes is the Chieftains upbeat version of The Nine Points of Roguery (made popular by Boys of the Lough - but not sure if they composed it). Jon Pilatzke is the Chieftains' lead fiddle player who also comes forward to dance as the reel progresses. The other guy dancing is his brother Nathan. Both brothers are part of the Canadian band Step Crew, created by Jon and Nathan, and Cara Butler, who joins them dancing. Cara is the younger sister of Jean Butler (of Riverdance fame). Now you know 🙂.

Great to see Paddy Maloney still leading this band, with this new lineup. I played fiddle in a band that opened for them on a US tour in '79. I remember the grand Sean Keane, and the sweet airs of Martin Fay, the two fiddlers at that time. The Chieftains, the Boys of the Lough, and the Bothy band were the popular and influential Celtic bands at the time. Go see Paddy and others jamming with, or for, Frank Zappa, shortly before his death. The Chieftains have had a remarkable career and played with an impressive list of artists. Brilliant.
