  • "The Chieftains" play the traditional march "O'Sullivan's". There are a few other clips of this piece of music on "RUclips", but this, as far as I can find, is the only clip to show the actual band playing the tune.

My ma brought me and my brother to see them in the Ulster Hall in the 1970s. The memories have stayed with me since. Ambassadors of Irish Music I regret not going to more of their concerts

Took my late father to see them many years ago, he was quietly weeping during one of their dittys, he said his grandmother in Boston sang the song to him when he a boy. At that moment, it was worth it all. We had a wonderful evening. They are superb

Most of what ever has been The Chieftains - Kevin Conneff, ex-Chieftains members Michael Turbridy and Sean Potts [RIP] (all on bodhrans), Derek Bell [RIP] (harp), Sean Keane and Martin Faye [RIP] (both on fiddle), Matt Molloy (on flute), and Paddy Moloney (on uilleann pipes). This is a combintion of what has been group members over the life of the band, with the exception of Davy Fallon, Peadar Mercier, Ronnie McShane, and Sean O'Riada.

Some public buildings have great acoustics. Years ago I had finished my duty, and was passing through the terminal at Dublin airport with the rest of the crew. The terminal address system was playing a piece by the Chieftains, so I stopped to listen....it was as if it was "live". When the music stopped, the applause began !! It was live. I followed the sound, turned a corner....behind the stage, and found one seat empty in the front row. It was a great concert at the beginning of their "Boil the Breakfast Early " tour. I don't know what happened to the rest of the crew :)) or whose seat I pinched !!

@@wolfthequarrelsome504 I take your point Pat. This clip came from a tape in which the other clips were from the mid 1980s, no doubt about that. I can only assume that the programme I recorded was a repeat transmission of a programme recorded some years earlier. I'll see if I can locate the tape and look at it again. Many thanks for pointing this out.
      All the best, Kenny

This was recorded in 1984, for the Chieftains' 21st "birthday" as a band. Although Matt Molloy was indeed the flute player with the group at the time, he appears to have stepped back for this tune, and the band were joined on stage by 2 former members, Sean Potts on whistle and Michael Tubridy on flute - and on bodhrans for this particular piece of music.
Molloy returns to the stage soon after for a memorable flute duet with Michael Tubridy, which I have posted here as well.
