"The Gallant Sodger" - "Ceolbeg" Demo tape 1982
I recently came across this demo tape which we made in 1982. Some of the tracks were not included on the first "Ceolbeg" album, including this one. I've added a few early publicity photos and a few from Lorient Festival, Brittany, in 1985. The final photo is of Pete Boond [RIP] and I think was taken in Ullapool on the west coast of Scotland. I still remember the music and good times we all had together with Peter. Sadly departed, much missed, but not forgotten.

I recently re-discovered this recording which I think someone sent me from the Ballyvourney "Cruinniu" Flute Festival some years back. Outstanding playing of 2 fine traditional Irish reels. The great Colm Murphy on bodhran. I took the photo at the Willie Clancy week, again, some years back, of Louise and her father Mick on accordion having an outdoor session of an evening in Miltown Malbay.

Happy St. Patrick's Day 2024 I haven’t seen Desi in a few years, maybe 5 or even 6, but I loved this track on his CD from 3 years ago, “Two For Joy”. I met Desi in 1977 and he has been both a good friend and musical inspiration ever since. The music is accompanied by a few photos from trips to Scotland in the 1970s/1980s, a few “Cran” publicity photos, and the covers from some of the recordings...

    Hi, I read a comment you posted that you have a cassette recording of the JSD Band playing on John Peel's show. Can you upload it please? I understand you might be hesitant due to the uploader chewing you out but I'd like to hear it, as a fan of folk rock (and John Peel).

      Hi - I don't think the recording I have is of suitable quality. But I am sure that at least some of the JSD band John Peel recordings are up on the internet somewhere, or they were a year or so ago. Incidentally, the JSD Band were inducted into the "Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame" just over 3 weeks ago, nominated by my brother Martin. We met up with Sean O'Rourke at the end of the evening. It was really great to catch up with him after so many years. They were a true inspiration to us in the early 70s.

    • @tweeandcute283
      @tweeandcute283 11 дней назад

      @ That's awesome! Your brother Martin has good taste. Looking online, it seems like either the JSD band peel sessions have vanished or there's no way to search for them. I could only find listings that said what they played on those peel sessions but no recordings of the sessions themselves.

      @@tweeandcute283 If I still have the tapes, I'll have a listen again. Maybe even with poor quality, it's better than them being lost forever.

      I'm afraid not. Ronnie Cooper's "Tushker" is a reel, the first tune Aly plays is a bagpipe-style march. It was given a name below, 3 years ago, assuming that is correct.

    These two were acquaintances of mine from decades ago in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Hard to believe it's been almost twenty-one years now! Johnny will be eternally remembered for his wit, warm smile and infectious laughter. Each brother is a tremendous musician, but together, the tension that only brothers have came out as musical magic! I miss seeing both of them but Phil choosing to play music mostly in the British Isles makes me miss them even more so. Thanks for the precious memories!
