Olympiacos hasn't a small budget. I would say an average one according to the Euroleague's data (9th or 10th if i mistaken). It's ridiculous that you always mention it.
Again the budget word... Its getting boring man. The same team in football has the biggest budget and noone speaks of it. In basketball is being kept mentioned as a miracle... Omg

Olympiakos way of playing, is a way of life. Olympiacos, with the way it operates in general as an organization, gives life lessons, not just some lessons of good basketball.
@@DimShamrock you have confused the behavior of a single fan with the mentality of an entire association. this fan was punished by the club with a lifetime ban from SEF
You are 100% right , i was reading some interviews of players that played in Olympiacos and most of them said they wanted to play in the team because it was a team that makes you a better player and was important for their evolution/progress
The GOAT of off ball movement in Coach's B playstyle was Vezenkov. He was also a "sniper" on shooting the ball so opponent teams were extra focused on him. Once left, we can see sometime it's difficult for Oly players to connect especially at the beginning of the season. New signings and existing players that have bigger/different role this year needed time to figure every team mate out. We can clearly see now Oly is more dominant in the latest games.
there is no Goat for plays like these. All have to move in time in specific positions and do specific acts .If that fails then u need a top playemaker to take the correct choice. Sloukas is really good in that role . Sasha was a great attacker but his big difference was that he was a great defender too. Tho his body wasnt helping to move fast , his space control and possitioning were in top level. Last year the team was blessed with no injuries , there wasnt any natoinal team games so they could practise all together . This kind of playing need hours of practise till u know each scenario and execute em asap. This year is not like that, many injuries many extra games for the players but team didnt chang more than 30% and thats a great benefit
@@ypsilonalpha You are wrong. Sasha was indeed the goat in off ball movement and he took the place of Papanikolaou who was the pioneer in Olympiakos before Sasha. Now Peters is starting to move like Sasha. I think Neo(Peters) is copying the MATRIX(Sasha)!!Sasha was never a top defender but he was very much improved in the last 2 years. Needs to improve more now in the NBA. Again you are wrong for the playmaker. Not only one playmaker is needed to play flex style. You need more playmakers and Olympiacos has many that play that role for sure even if they are not categorized as point guards. Remember Fal, Papanikolaou, Piters. All them are good in passing the ball. And yes Sloukas is an excellent playmaker but as you can see this year he was not the only guy to orchestrate Olympiakos. Sloukas prefered much more pick n roll and have the ball in hands much more time and that's why I believe he left the team or we let him go whatever you prefer. Sloukas also played a lot alongside with Bolomboy who in my opinion is a pick n roll monster but really weak for the flex system and they cooperated very succesfully using pick n rolls. Bolomboy really struggled in the role of Fal in the flex system. I believe the same thing applies to Miloutinov. He is not so efficient in the flex system, he can't replace Fal and coach B has to use him in different ways like he uses now Petrousev and Wright.
@@kiros75 Bro Shasha was on 4 and Pap on 3 what are u talking about? Pap had a great year last seasson and he was 90% in the first 5 starting along with Sasha. Pap shared the place with Shaq and Shasa with Piters(thats why he didnt play a lot last year) wake up
@@ypsilonalpha what are you talking about? you completely lost it. i am talking about the off ball movement. i did not refer to the players performance. read again please.
@@kiros75 there is not any off ball stat . So u cant take place of someone for something when that place does not exist. In systems like that how u can say someone the GOAT since is defenatelly team work . Only when the system fails u can see who can read the game and take the correct choice , even by making a cut , pass , drive into etc. When they execute the plan the moves are specific. This is what u need to have in defence tho. fast reading and moving preperly. and yes last year Sasha was great in this part thats why his off rebounds and turn overs raised and thats the big difference with Piters . In offense Piters numbers are not that far from Sasha , but in defence he cant follow. Tho this year we have better defenders in 1,2,5 without lacking in other spots. This year we miss only a player like Sloukas. Many time the ball movent didnt work , ofc that is cause they didnt practise all together and injuries took us further back and theres when u need a player who can read fast and act out of the box . Sloukas had that role coach B tried to get James for that but wasnt possible at this time.
You decided to speak about the best coach in Europe and the best and most unique team! I've seen it countless times on the court and television and it always works! No overpaying, no big budgets, good strategy on court and 3 years in a row the best team! OLYMPIACOS
That's what i said too before the season start. Unfortunately we didn't get the signings we aimed for, so it's gonna be really hard to see both Greek teams in F4. Both teams have great players to start, and with few more additions, next year this will before a reality for sure!
In Europe team defense and tactics are much more complicated than in the NBA. Therefore , much stronger. It harder to score on 1vs1 because there is not enough space. So what Olympiakos is doing? They are an extremely well trained team. You can see how they develop on fastbreak. How the wings run how they set their feet to shot the ball and everything. It’s so simple but so hard to do it at the same time. They space the floor with detail. In addition , every player shares the ball and no one is over the team. Bartzokas secret weapon are the big guys , he likes to create through them. From the post up game , they create an inside out game that opens up easy shots and makes the defense vulnerable because they have to make close out defense. Defensively , active hands and tough strong players make the life of the offense really hard. Also , coach Bartzokas is not fan of hero ball because think about that, while a player spends 4-5 secs dribbling the ball to play a 1vs1 situation , the defense adjust easy. Nowadays most euroleague teams have big guys that they can play the switching defense very well or a dinosaur 5 guy who can wait in the paint and disrupt every drive to the basket. So teams change their culture and like Olympiakos they use simple but innovative ways to play basketball. In order to enhance the fact that we are talking about a great team overall , their budget is not as high as others teams , they are in the middle of that category out of every Euroleague team.
Maybe bc European league is more grounded and technical and the NBA/College/HighSchool is more athletic and skilled? Literally look at Luka, Jovic, and other big euro players… then look at Curry, Lebron, and KD. Completely different levels of what the sport is good at showcasing. Everyone I have mentioned all play different games yet the groups they’re in they’re similar to one another and vastly different than the other group. Now look at Wemby. He is the mix of both. It has nothing to do with one sports or league being better. It’s different competition and it’s different skill sets and play styles. Don’t be dense. No need to belittle things that you don’t prefer. It’s corny. Not every American or European is good. Or bad. But there are many decent to proficient players that always strive to the top.
we are simple team with less talent like others teams but we are playing elite deff and team plays on offence to find the open the shot and zero ego team...we are like a upgrade version of zalgiris..good deff, pass team plays and PASSION
Great analysis...as an avid Olympiacara I think they are just great to watch...they all believe in the system...and the system works most of the time...when they are healthy....one-on-one is nice to watch...but not all the time and not for the whole duration of the match....anyway hope Olympiacos do well...thanks for giving coach B the credit he deserves 👍
thank you for acknowledging the greatness of this team! but its more than plays and passing. this team for more than a decade is on the highest level of basketball because of the menrality and stady core of players (mostly greeks: printezis spanoulis papanikolaou etc). and with coaches like Ivkovic ,Sferopoulos and Bartzokas that kept the defense-first mentality.
Proud of our team for so many reasons, the coach supports his players, Oly plays charismatic basketball which is very enjoyable to watch, players are bonded between them and with the team, Oly fans are just crazy about them, the coach has good thought out strategy different for every game. Win or loose, you have to love them. Euroleague is great!!
I wish NBA teams played like this. This is basketball the way it was originally intended to be played. What we have now is a two man game, pick and roll/ skills competition.
thats the most beautifull basketball actually. and you always have a chance of winning without superstars. even in the nba. from a panathinaikos fan. panathinaikos and greece used to play like that in our last golden era (2004-2011)
Now that's a brilliant piece of analysis for young players and fans to appreciate the many layers of the game and actively watch basketball. Even more impressive this comes from an American. well done!
Like all your videos, this one truly speaks volumes on your insight on the game! Great video! On the subject, i have come to dislike the "cowboy" style of offense i. e. Monaco AS, with a super star hogging the ball (and delivering of course) and 4 extras on the set. Its an exaggeration yes but i hope i make my point. Keep up the good work guys!
All the things in life make circles and the basketball is the same. To modernize old things and adapt to what is played today is also a thing. Coach b is a wonderful mind with progressive thinking in life and basketball one of the greatest of all time imo. Tha star in olympiakos team are in the bench and his job is exactly that to find ways to win against the biggest budgets of the league with creativity. Also this video proves why stretching power forwards like Sasha Peters Singleton etc are so important in his system instead for example in Ataman's system (talent with basic pnrs) that are the least important players in offense.
Thanks for the comment. I agree, except for the part that PFs were not important in Ataman's systems that won championship. Efes always had a great shooter in that position which unlocked their offense and allowed them to have perfect spacing.
Thank you for being one of the only people recognizing this isn’t new just modernized. It goes back further but it’s basically 2000s spurs basketball. If you look at this team and the 2010 Golden State Warriors the way these 3 teams play you can tell they all have the same foundation of the philosophy of moving the ball. Great teams to watch play and make the game look beautiful.
You should definitely analyze the defense of Olympiacos... Also, Olympiacos is not famous for offense but you can't say he has mediocre offensive players. The truth is every one of the players you see except Papanikolalou and 1-2 more are no more than a year or two years in the team, meaning they were playing different style of basketball (as you mentioned most teams play differently) and while i am writing this, now i realise what coach Bartzokas meant about the new players "they need time to learn our playstyle". There is a exception to this, the new Center to cover the injuries of Milutinov, Moses Wright got into the system really fast. Most others though really take a lot of time.. Especially this year the team lacks 1v1 players Like Dorsei or Slukas or fire n forget vezenkov but at this moment is going for top 4 in Euroleague and is getting close to 100% performance after many injuries all the year (another thing that you should discuss and make a video, a lot of injuries on many teams in Euroleague etc because there are way too many games every season now that national teams played)
Congrats! Someone had to say it about Olympiakos and coach Bartzokas work and sight of the game! Please can you give an analysis on Panathinaikos of Obradovic years (2007-2011) in Pana way of playing? And what are the differences with the today's Obradovic. Thank you for all your videos!
Very nice video once again. You people really love and understanding basketball like no other in Europe. Btw Bartzokas as a name sounds very Lithuanian, am i right? -)
To put it in a football perspective, Oly is playing tiki taka in offence which requires more mental and teamwork skills rather than a free flowing game which relies mainly on technical skills..Maybe coach B got influenced by barca footbal mentality while in catalunya 🙂
this is due to the system of basketball in the US. It is built only for one goal: advance an individual through the system to the next level. This goal drives everything they do, and forces players to focus on showcasing themselves. This results in isolation basketball on offense and no emphasis on defense. This emphasis runs upward to the NBA as those players got there doing that and refuse to listen to coaches asking them to play a different way.
Beautiful basketball. And very illuminating clip by Coach Clifford. This is part of the reason I'm a Warriors fan, because they emphasize off ball movement more than most NBA teams. I think the reason NBA teams don't do this much anymore is because of all the nonsense the player with the ball is allowed to get away with these days. If you have the ball, you can travel, palm, push off, bump and hook the defender and in the NBA those things are rarely called. Also if you create contact you can flop and get the call half the time. Think of a player like James Harden. If the refs allow the ball handler to get away with all this, then there's no reason to move the ball around.
No strategy is 100%. The most added value is execution, timing, passing precision. So in this sense, I think any offense can work so long as it is taught well and the players enjoy running it.
It's not about talent, it's about respecting the basics of the game . R. Madrid uses ball movement and cuts all the time and surely they are not lacking the talent .
All these reflect Bartzokas the player. He was never a star but an important player for a small team, where they had to find ways to be competitive against teams that they were more talented and athletic. This was the way he was playing. A kind of "point power forward" that would move off the ball, cut to the basket for easy layups, avoid dribbling and take advantage of his teammates by passing them the ball in a kinda of flex play.
The reason 1 on 1 and pnr offenses are thriving is not a huge talent jump but rather the officiating that heavily favors the offense. The step back 3 was a rare sight years ago, not because of more talent but because it used to be called a travel.
Amazing strategy Amazing and focus players! One team that just started to play the basketball they can ! It's 03/03/2024! No one can beat easy olympiacos now! 💪💪
I always loved to play flex and as team we were really succesfull playing it. But I gotta admit that playing it didn‘t really help to develop the neccesary skills to Beat your defender one on one consistantly.
The best way to go about it is to have a team play but always know who is your go-to scorer. That's what the Spurs did. They played team basketball but always knew if things go wrong they go to Duncan who was elite scorer in the paint. Then it was Manu, then Parker and later on Kawhi. That's the best way to go about it. Hard to achieve obviously but is the ideal situation.
Olympiacos literally plays a bit of all ways in the court they dont play like Real madrid who only throw 3 pointers for 40 minutes they will make points from 3 point throws from free throws from lay ups with or without fouls from 2 point throws and yes the Cherry on top is the Passing tactic of Coach B The "Skakisths"(chess player) they will change at least 10 to 12 passes untill they find the right opening for an attack
Your comment about Real is really unfair especially this year. Real is a team that has big talent and a very good coach who uses a similar system to Olympiacos. And no they they are not using free throws so much as other teams(Panathinaikos-Maccabi....). They are an excellent team. This opinion is coming from an Olympiacos fan.
You need tough sizable players that are not afraid to get bruized because this style of play demands a lot of contact and therefore tons of energy, big rotation and a lot of practice time. Bartzokas was preparing this squad from day one without the pressure of the greek league competition so there was enough time and patience to produce results. Most european coaches, on the other hand have great pressure to win so it is difficult to invest the time to get everybody involved....Owners and fans don^t like to wait and that is why I believe this style of play would suit Zalgiris well( not enough money, educated fans, great production of domestic talent).
In my eyes, Real Madrid took Bartzokas' "playbook" adjusted it and gave it to super skillful and talented players to play it - cause arguably RM has superstars in every position. And we all saw the results! And that's what basketball analysts meant 3yrs ago when they predicted Bartzokas basketball will be the future gamestyle of Europe.

Pretty good analysis but you forgot to talk about the kryptonite of coach b. Yes, this style of basketball is beautiful to watch but when it matters the most talent win the games. If Olympiacos had a talented closer and a leader like spanoulis for example, they would have won back to back euroleague trophies the last 2 years. Instead, the opposite teams had these type of players (micic, llull) who stepped up on crunch time and eventually won the title for their teams.

Olympiacos' basketball is choreography. All players must develop an unthinkable basketball IQ to adapt to Coach B's way of playing. Not a single play dedicated to a specific player. All plays apply to all 5 of them. "Moneyball" in the basketball edition. Low budget, maximum efficiency. Only respect to such efforts.
Being a big fan of 2000s school european basketball with more tactics and less 1to1s I really appreciate this style of play. Nevertheless I have to say that in the last 10 years I dont watch basketball anymore due to how rediculous is for me this run and gun mentality. Unfortunately, this style works and that's why it is the most dominant one currently all around the world. Let's see if this will change.

And yes the budget of Olympiacos is in the middle, way far from many top notch teams with which he competes every year. It's true please digest it!Get on with it.
@kiros75 Digest what? Olympiacos fans should digest that Olympiacos is in the middle and don't act like it's at the bottom.
Olympiakos way of playing, is a way of life. Olympiacos, with the way it operates in general as an organization, gives life lessons, not just some lessons of good basketball.
Great life lessons. Like how to call Bissang a monkey.

Sloukas had that role coach B tried to get James for that but wasnt possible at this time.

this is such beautiful play. the off ball movement really forces you to pay attention to the game, and not just the ball handler.
oh yeah with Olympiakos it's usual to be actually looking off the ball than the guy who has it
I hope the coach to win the euroleague again this year, because he is the best coach in the last years.
Congrats for pronouncing Olympiakos correctly ,even greek reporters when speaking english with foreing players pronounce it wrong.

Olympiacos number 1 team in Greece and Euroleague 💪💪🇬🇷🇬🇷
I am a Panathinaikos fan but I really admire Olympiacos game play. I believe both teams have a great chance to be in the final four.
Ολυμπιακός εδώ. Μακάρι όλοι οι Παναθηναϊκοι (και Ολυμπιακοι) να ήταν σαν και σένα.

Fantastic analysis! As an Olympiacos fan i am proud of your work guys! Thank you🔴⚪️🤝
thank you for acknowledging the greatness of this team! but its more than plays and passing. this team for more than a decade is on the highest level of basketball because of the menrality and stady core of players (mostly greeks: printezis spanoulis papanikolaou etc). and with coaches like Ivkovic ,Sferopoulos and Bartzokas that kept the defense-first mentality.
Augustas (!), enlightening presentation and excellent piece of work!

I wish NBA teams played like this. This is basketball the way it was originally intended to be played. What we have now is a two man game, pick and roll/ skills competition.
Excellent video analysis
thats the most beautifull basketball actually. and you always have a chance of winning without superstars. even in the nba.

Best team and best coach of the season so far
Give Coach B already the award for the best chess player EVER
Beautiful basketball. Maybe I'll even start watching Euro league again just because of them
They are fun to watch, tune in!
Olympiakos is our passion ❤ Thank you for this video
Thanks for the comment

Very nice video once again. You people really love and understanding basketball like no other in Europe. Btw Bartzokas as a name sounds very Lithuanian, am i right? -)
Thanks a lot! Maybe a little bit like the first name, yes, not the last name though haha
We don't wan't Antentokounmpo's jersey... We want SPANOULIS jersey !!! XD
To put it in a football perspective, Oly is playing tiki taka in offence which requires more mental and teamwork skills rather than a free flowing game which relies mainly on technical skills..Maybe coach B got influenced by barca footbal mentality while in catalunya 🙂
Ωραίος παραλληλισμός!
@@MariosPanaouΌντως!
this is due to the system of basketball in the US. It is built only for one goal: advance an individual through the system to the next level. This goal drives everything they do, and forces players to focus on showcasing themselves. This results in isolation basketball on offense and no emphasis on defense. This emphasis runs upward to the NBA as those players got there doing that and refuse to listen to coaches asking them to play a different way.
beautiful video🔥
thanks a lot!
What software do you use to do your highlighting, and circles, arrows etc…? Thanks.
Coach B constantly swearing like a dock hand also helps 😂
😆🤣 It sure does!!!!
Skills like dribbling and shooting are now very rare to find from greek players. So this style is pretty much a need for a greek team
No strategy is 100%. The most added value is execution, timing, passing precision. So in this sense, I think any offense can work so long as it is taught well and the players enjoy running it.
It is a given that Coach B will get the success he deserves. The ball takes away, but it also gives.
It's not about talent, it's about respecting the basics of the game . R. Madrid uses ball movement and cuts all the time and surely they are not lacking the talent .
That's a very good point!
Amazing strategy
Amazing and focus players!
Dribbling is almost forbidden at Olympiakos. Great video!
Olympiacos is the next European Champion
you should made a video with papanikolaou cuts and off ball movement
The best way to go about it is to have a team play but always know who is your go-to scorer. That's what the Spurs did. They played team basketball but always knew if things go wrong they go to Duncan who was elite scorer in the paint. Then it was Manu, then Parker and later on Kawhi. That's the best way to go about it. Hard to achieve obviously but is the ideal situation.
Oh god it's so much pleasure just to look how they move on court
one of my favorites team to watch and analyze, definitely
Nice analysis
My Gilas Pilipinas plays like this now but in a system called "Triangle Offense". Has less dribbles and more passes. 🇵🇭✊🏻
This video made me subscribe! Pass pass pass the ball create space and boom!!💥
Love to hear it, thanks!

The legend is teaching basketball.. I am referring to Olympiakos of course...
