At the latch end (under the front of the hood), tie on a piece of parachute cord on the cable end. Wrap the end in duct tape. Then, when you pull the cable out, the para cord will follow the path so the new cable gets routed same as the old. Tie the paracord on the new cable, duct tape it, and pull it through.

I own a 2006 Mazda 5, mostly same chassis engine as you know. You have to unscrew and dismantle the hood release mechanism which is a pain. There's two bolts. I had to do it from underneath to get to one of the bolts on the passenger side. Good luck!

+Andrew Thompson - Not really other than a liberal application of silicone spray and a good yank. That's what Ed did on the Jeep. I suppose sometimes the only way is destruction though. I like your screwdriver latch test. Thanks for the comments and for watching!
Hi - Thanks for watching! Yes, there usually is. Sometimes the old cable can simply be pulled through the hole in it (as in this vehicle), but sometimes the gromet has to be cut from around the cable. I recommend that you check the exact procedure with a service/repair manual for the vehicle you are working on if possible.

Can you by pass this interior hood release lever? Why is it there anyway?? Mine is now loose or slack, it is taking 4-6 pulls to get the hood to pop on my 2006 Aveo. It isn't broken off. It goes through the fender well, not easy access like on this Jeep. It is a big job to replace, got to take off the front left wheel, and the inner fender plastic cover, etc.... My 94 F-250 was easier than the video. Nothing to unbolt up front except the hood latch itself (2 screws). In the cab, pull out a brush plug (get a thumbnail under the cap and pull straight. Make sure it's warm. Old plastic can be brittle. The inside trim part is tucked under a dashboard piece at top and the rubber threshold strip at the bottom. Remove the front three screws on the rubber and lift. The inside trim piece can move forward at the bottom end, and you don't even need to loosen the dashboard screw. After that, it's two Phillips screws to remove the whole inside-the-cab handle assembly, and you can pull the cable all; the way out. Tie a piece of parachute cord on the front end of it, and you don't have to memorize the routing. Tie the same piece on the new cable and it gives you a way to pull it through places it would be hard to push.
None that I have seen, but then again, I certainly haven't seen them all so I'm not sure. That being said, the purpose of this video was to provide a basic idea for replacing the hood release cable when the pull handle breaks off, which is a common problem on some older vehicles. Thanks for watching!
Hi Mary - I don't have one here to check but you can consult the vehicle's owner's manual. Since you are asking the question here, I'm guessing you don't have the owner's manual and if that's the case a trip to the library to look in a repair manual for your vehicle should help. Thanks for watching!
Wish it was really that simple. My 2009 Toyota Sienna has a rubber gasket on the inside that I can't get off to pull the wire through and no one online talks about it. Anybody have experience with this??
Hi Carolyn - Some of the front end components will probably have to be removed to access the hood latch assembly, then you can open the hood and replace the cable. A service or repair manual for your vehicle will show you how it's done. Thanks for watching!

Hi - Thanks for watching! If the cable is broken under the hood somewhere I suggest that you refer to a service/repair manual (available from the vehicle's dealership parts department, auto parts stores and some public libraries) for the repair procedure. You will probably have to take a lot of stuff apart to get to the hood latch.
Hi Jim - Used this video to change my sister's hood release cable and ran into two issues. One, now the hood will not close. Could it be that the latch is misaligned? I've lowered the hood and the latch and U seem to line up but latch will not open to accept the U . Second the soft plug insert that closes the pass through for the cable will not seed properly. I can't reach it the engine area because of ignition wires sitting on top of the access point. Any ideas?
Hi Darlean - Yes, the hood latch could be misaligned. It's a common situation and the latches are designed to be moved around a bit to get them into alignment. If the plug doesn't seat properly, and it's the right cable for the application, you could try to lubricate it with silicone spray to help wiggle it into place from the passenger side of the firewall. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

Considering how long it has been since cars have been in prduction, these minor problems should not exist. The manufacturer should pay for any repairs of catches, cables and fundamental features that break due to their failure to refine and improve the standards.
Yeah, and watch the price of vehicles skyrocket AND their replacement parts due to wear and tear. "Tire shops should replace tires for free because the technology of tires has not progressed that much since tires for vehicles were invented". What a profoundly idiotic thought.
Jim Bates, I was trying to explain that when I pulled the cable with pliers, my hood latch still wouldn't release. I ended up getting a helper pull on the cable and I tugged on the hood until it released. It was the hood latch that was sticking. I applied some lube and it works fine now.
It's a great video and I've figured what I need to do and this was a good basis to look at my replacement. Thank you Jim. I'll be sure to do a little how2 video just incase.

Hi Mary - Wow! Since a replacement cable with handle costs about $40.00 at the parts store, $330.00 an hour for labor does seem high indeed. But then again, I'm no expert. Just sayin............ Thanks for watching!
Hi thanks for responding so fast. I do live in Toronto , Canada and things are a little more expensive here. But I do believe the dealership is charging way to much. They say it 2 hours to fix the leaver and cable. I just call a friend's mechanic and he quoted me $160.00 for parts and labour to fix it. Tie the same piece on the new cable and it gives you a way to pull it through places it would be hard to push.
this wire cannot be tightened up like the throttle wire ? I had this problem today
None that I have seen, but then again, I certainly haven't seen them all so I'm not sure. That being said, the purpose of this video was to provide a basic idea for replacing the hood release cable when the pull handle breaks off, which is a common problem on some older vehicles. Thanks for watching!
How do you open the hood of my 1994 Sedan DeVille Cadillac
Okay OK Google show me how to open up a 94 Cadillac Sedan DeVille Hood
Hi Mary - I don't have one here to check but you can consult the vehicle's owner's manual. Since you are asking the question here, I'm guessing you don't have the owner's manual and if that's the case a trip to the library to look in a repair manual for your vehicle should help. Thanks for watching!
Hi Mary - Did Google help?
Wish it was really that simple. My 2009 Toyota Sienna has a rubber gasket on the inside that I can't get off to pull the wire through and no one online talks about it. Anybody have experience with this??
Hi - Thanks for watching! Have you checked a service/repair manual for your vehicle? There may be a procedure listed there.
I have a 92 olds got broken hood latch line. I can't get my hood open up
Hi Carolyn - Some of the front end components will probably have to be removed to access the hood latch assembly, then you can open the hood and replace the cable. A service or repair manual for your vehicle will show you how it's done. Thanks for watching!
I have a 05 range rover. And I took the cable out.cause I was replacing the old one.and the hood close on me by accident...can someone tell me had to open the hood....its a range rover hse.2005
Problem is hood is closed and cable break.
I deliberately break things so I can fix them all the time!
Hi - Thanks for watching and sharing your rather interesting past time!
Where they located i would love to know do they come out to your establishment i will pay for gas
Hi - Thanks for watching! Hopefully this video will provide you with enough information for you to determine whether or not you can replace a broken hood release cable in your vehicle. A service/repair manual for the vehicle, available at the dealership and auto parts stores, will be very helpful as well.
Theres got to be a easier way of repairing a broken release handle than to replace the whole cable. If not I'll just keep using my pliers for the hood release 😁
Hi - Thanks for watching and sharing your opinion, and yup, pliers work just fine too.
OMG @ 3:00 attach a pull string to the end of the cable!!
Hi - Thanks for watching and sharing your opinion! Did that work in your project?
@@WrenchinUpwithJimBates It's a company vehicle that I just got assigned so I will try to do the repairing on my own without getting in trouble, I do pull cables for living so every time that I see someone pulling a cable without living a pull string behind!! In my case is just the handle that needs to be repaired, I hope. You guys made it looks very easy so I will give it a try.
Hi Hector - Thanks for sharing your experience. We hope your project turns out well.
TY.... this is the exact procedure I needed to see.... wrong make, wrong model, wrong mechanism..........................
Hi - Thanks for watching and sharing your experience!
Wow looks super easy! Dealer wants to charge me over 800$
Hi - Thanks for watching and sharing your experience!
My Audi A4 ‘03 brought me here. 🙄You have to be the Hulk to even get the broken latch to move
Hi - Thanks for watching and for your interesting comment! I hope the video helped in some way.
Okay y’all skipped about two important parts, removing the cable from the latch and my car has a metal plate covering the top corner
Hi - Thanks for watching! The cable is being removed from the latch at 2:08. There was no metal plate on this vehicle, so I suggest that you refer to a service/repair manual for the vehicle to get that information.
my 92 sunbird hood cable broke at the latch , I'll drill a hole in the handle and use a bike cable.
Hi - Thanks for watching and for your comment! Let us know how it works out.
Who’s headbanging while watching this 😅
Hi - Thanks for watching and sharing your opinion!
2017??
Hi - The video shows the general procedure for most vehicles with this type of hood latch but you need to check a service or repair manual for your 2017 for the exact procedure. Thanks for watching!
Considering how long it has been since cars have been in prduction, these minor problems should not exist. The manufacturer should pay for any repairs of catches, cables and fundamental features that break due to their failure to refine and improve the standards.
Hi - Thanks for watching and sharing your opinion! I'm sure others will agree.
Yeah, and watch the price of vehicles skyrocket AND their replacement parts due to wear and tear. "Tire shops should replace tires for free because the technology of tires has not progressed that much since tires for vehicles were invented". What a profoundly idiotic thought.
pulling the cable doesn't release my hood!
And...............?
Jim Bates,
I was trying to explain that when I pulled the cable with pliers, my hood latch still wouldn't release. I ended up getting a helper pull on the cable and I tugged on the hood until it released. It was the hood latch that was sticking. I applied some lube and it works fine now.
Hi Mark - Thanks for sharing. I think your experience will help others who might have the same problem. Thanks for watching!
@@marks3478 if you can get the hood up where do you put the lube, I have a 2003 Toyota Sienna
@@donna8826 , On the release mechanism under the hood. For me part of the problem is that the cable has stretched as well.
Easy - no... try that on a Porsche Cayenne lol
Hi - Yup, some are definitely easier than others. Thanks for watching!
It's a great video and I've figured what I need to do and this was a good basis to look at my replacement. Thank you Jim.
I'll be sure to do a little how2 video just incase.
You are welcome! If you want, you can post your video here too when you are ready as it will probably be helpful to other folks with the Cayenne. Here's a link to a battery replacement video I did for the Cayenne that you may be interested in. ruclips.net/video/csQICKy5OJQ/видео.html
If you would have lubricated the hood latch , you wouldn't be replacing the cable.
Hi - Thanks for watching and sharing your opinion!
That latch hasn't see WD 40 in seven Sundays.
Hi - Thanks for watching! It sure hasn't!!
You mean you don't take the latch out and replace it with hood pins like the previous idiot that owned my car?
Hi - Thanks for watching! Um, yeah. As a side note, I've seen cars with tiny pad locks in the hood pins too.
That jeep needs new headlights
Hi - Thanks for watching and sharing your observation!
Ford Canada is charging me $700.00 dollars to do this on my 2013 Escape. They say its 2 hours of labour cost....
So I guess, I am gonna have to go with a plan and get them to lower the price.
Came here looking for Cable Guy. Very disappointed.
Hi - Thanks for watching! He was busy so you got us instead - sorry.
PLEASE ... LOSE THE OBNXIOUS MUSIC! Couldn't stand to listen to the entire videos. I will look elsewhere.
