The Pink/Yellow combo works because: The yellow visually mixes with the pink to create an orange tone, the white in the pink keeps the visual brightness of the yellow :) If you use a Cerulean Blue / Aqua blue mixed with a white as the shade instead of the pink, you will get a cool yellow instead as the blue will visually mix with the yellow and make a cool green. Great paint job by the way, looks as amazeballs as ever!
This makes sense to me! I need to get the sludge moving in my brain and figure this stuff out. Probably I'll have to do another batch of experiments! Thanks for watching and thanks for the insight :-)
Yellow pigments have a tendency to go towards olive green in shades. Red and green are complementary colors, and the reddish foundation helps to filter out the greenish tendencies of the yellow pigment on top, keeping the shadows in the orange range.

Have a great time. It is a great convention and I have enjoyed the times I have gone. I have seen the results on Luke Towen's channel and it looks like a fantastic system. thanks for sharing this and great paint job!
@@GoobertownHobbies You really should , they have gotten so cheap now ( I purchased a longer orange 10 for 343 AUD ) . Mind numbingly simple to use compared to an FDM printer ( been printing FDM for a while ) . I went in blind and the first mini I printed on it came out perfect ( a warhammer 40k undead guy who I thought would look cool in DnD). I literally spent 5 minutes figuring how to use the slicer and printed it .
On the yellow and pink thing. When applying any paint over a white and black under coat, you are building up the color layers on a grey scale gradient. This desaturates the color. Apply it over another saturated color like pink keeps the saturation, and since they are very close to opposites on the color wheel they make a dark color. you could use other colors but they might not compliment each other as much. the same rule goes for mixing paints for highlights and shadows, if you just use black and white for the respective shades you will loose the saturation of the colors and your over all piece moves closer towards grey.
The future is now, old man! Seriously though these look great. At least on par with Reaper Bones, if not better. It's an interesting paradigm shift and I'm curious how this will affect the miniatures industry! I certainly don't want companies like Reaper or even Games Workshop to suffer in any way from this development. But I also don't want weird IP lawsuits over 3d printed Space Marines. It'll be an interesting future, for sure! Thank you for highlighting this project :)
Yeah this is very interesting stuff. Like others have said, there are still barriers to entry (money, space, expertise) for these printers, but we're definitely at an interesting point for this technology! I'm excited to see where this goes.
Hello Goobertown Hobbies, that's funny you said 3D printing is the future and future is now. I just said the same thing in another YT comments not to long ago. 3D printing will help keep miniatures prices down. It will take some time but 3D printing will pretty much just take over everything in our lives. Thank you for your 3D printing & painting videos. Thank you Goobertown Hobbies & have a great day.
Got my own starter printer some 2 weeks ago, been printing mini's ever since. Have yet to paint them though, but it's so fricking easy now to get cheap mini's :D
It's like the spirit of Bob Ross has inhabited you, but instead of a fro there's the pony-tail. I love it. I'm learning tons of stuff from your videos and they are super de-stressing as a bonus. Keep it up!
cool, Danny's channel is how I started printing my Traveller starship miniatures. (I make them myself in a 3D program, and turn them into real physical models) I used an FDM printer (Ender3) and I just got a resin printer last week (Sparkmaker). I havent printed any resin yet, too busy at work, but I can't wait. Days off soon. Have a good trip!
So darker areas tend to have a higher saturation so the red undertone shows through in the low lights and a more pure yellow shows where the light's hitting. It makes the scales look organic and layered instead of like a flat colour with some shading. I also think it has something to do with how colour bounces maybe? Idk. All i know is that you dont shade with the same tone but darker
The pink-yellow combination goes well together because that pink is arguably a light purple. Purple and yellow are complimentary colors (opposites on the wheel). Also goober-cats!
I mentioned this in a comment on Squidmar - historically the layer lines and rough surface textures really turned me off of 3D printed minis (along with soft details). But if those things are in the past, I'll be really interested to try painting these! I'd just need to figure out the best printer/material to achieve this quality. I'm also curious how long they take to print.
Me too! Both of us love using washes, and layer lines would just instantly sabotage that technique. I've gotta start paying more attention to these 3d printing channels!
Oh man. Once again, I love your use of vibrant colors. These came out so good. I also come from a Tabletop RPG background and am always coming up with excuses to convince myself not to buy a 3D printer...this sure made that a lot harder to continue doing.
Pink works well in the shadows because it's colder than the yellow. A lot of people just add black to their main colour to make a shadows, but that just desaturates the colour. Making shadows colder and highlights warmer really makes models pop
It's just a synthetic round man. Looks like a cheap one at that. I didn't happen to spot any closeup frames of handle, but If I had to guess, it's from one of those variety packs you can get at any big box/craft store. Folkart or something.
The pink on yellow thing I think has something to do with pink being close to magenta, which stands opposite yellow on the colour wheel. I've heard some people use green against red for similar reasons.
True, Pink and yellow are almost complementary to each other. Try "Split complementary" (Google it!) and add some blue or green to the model. That would be an interesting experiment :)
Well, also, if you apply yellow directly on pink, because of the trasparency you kinda get orange, which is also used as shadow often for yellow colors, so I guess it's also for that reason
A lovely job! I love that Vallejo earth making tub! I am currently using a tiny tub of GW so have been inspired to buy this and hit the nearby Scottish beach.

I've been using my cheapo FDM printer to emulate your random paint a mini project. I use a random number generator to choose a mini from my folder, and just print and paint it. Been nice to do minis I probably wouldn't do otherwise
Whoa that's an awesome idea!!! I had never even considered that, that eliminates the whole need for hundreds of diverse spare minis! :-) That's incredible, I'm going to have to think about this! Oh yeah, I hope you're having fun with it! :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies I just got started in the mini painting hobby, so it's been a nice way to force myself to try new things, even if it's just doing different colors and basic techniques at the moment
The resin 3d printers really are outstanding when it comes to minis. The details my friend and I have got with the printer makes it well worth it. Plus you can print a large display piece of your mini which is a blast to paint. I’ve been working on the display of my character Uthgar, the photon resin printer is my recommendation. As always, love your channel and cheers!
"So I'm really hope I don't embarrass myself with these Lizard Folk" you didn't, but in my opinion the most important part of miniature youtube videos is for us to be able to relate to the material and results. I suppose it could sound like a backhanded insult, but it's not meant like it, your miniatures look great and after watching your videos I feel like I can do something similar. Squidmar on the other hand, I can't really relate to at all, he's like a fish in water with this. I don't know if he was taught as a kid or has talent for picking up painting techniques, but I feel like his results are way out of my reach. I'm really glad that the community is starting to notice 3D printed miniatures, I'm really looking forwards to how it'll expand. I'm not ashamed to say that I'd use it for the occasional "recast" and I have plenty of ways of excusing it, but simply put I think it might force at least a certain company to rethink its pricing tactics and maybe start being more reasonable or suffer from its own inability to adapt. I don't mean to be mean and I'm glad that their company can hire and keep its employees the way they do, but prices are way beyond the point of being prohibitive, which is why anyone who is serious is already buying so many used minis. Anyway, sorry to rant Brent, just wanted to say that I personally enjoy what you do a lot.
These are bloody good and the paint job looks even better I'm going to at least investigate this Kickstarter and I hope I've got the money while it's still going
Holy Secrets of the Salt Water Marsh, Batman! That was a great introduction for me on 3D models! I subscribe to Squidmar already, and I saw his Bugbear. I think you nailed the lizardmen. I love the green one, and at first, didn't like the orange. But when I saw the finished product, it looks amazing. I'm off to check out Lukes APS and 3D Printed Tabletop. Thank you and have fun at Gen Con!
You ever watch those PBS farming videos, where it talks about folks from Iowa, growing random stuff, and interacting with their local, small-town community? Totally gettin the same vibe here. :)
Now I am wondering how a purple base coat with pink zenethal highlight would do for a red mini. I've used purple as a shade to red plenty, but hadn't thought of pink (or possibly yellow if I wanted an orangy red mini) seeing as pink is just whitened red.
This may have to be one of my next experimentation type videos. You might be on to something with the purple/ pink/ red combo. There are probably some other great combos waiting to be re-discovered! Let me know if you give this a try before I get around to it!
Resin printers are awesome, but the resin scares the crap out of me. It’s highly toxic if you get it on your skin, and you u can’t just wash it off. And the residue from the process is highly toxic e-waste that you can’t just wash down the sink. Love the results but not for me. Love your work though.
I’m definitely no expert on color theory but it seems to me that the pink under yellow works to make the shadows more orange giving you a deeper shadow that is also redish so that’s what gives it the warm appearance. Similar to using yellow to highlight orange you’re using orange to shade yellow
@@GoobertownHobbies FYI: I tried water effects using glossy modge podge and clear Elmers school glue. Both worked great. I need to get some Vallejo water effects to try that too.
Pretty cool, things have indeed improved with 3D printing and the minis look very nice. I also love the fact your cats get along so well, what's the secret?! Mine are complete brats!
I help run the 3d printing service for my university library and we have a Form2 SLA printer (SLA is the style of printer as the Photon) . My suggestion is their "Grey Pro" resin and (if you can swing it) request that/don't cure it until after you remove the supports, they are much easier to remove while soft. Afterwards you can leave them in the sun for a few days to UV cure and then use as normal.
Lastly, the layer height of SLA printers is generally around .05mm for fine detail where traditional FDM ( the kind of printers most people think about when they think of 3D printing) is pretty standard at .2mm layer height. There is a hack you can use to get FDM printers to have much finer layer heights, one of the top results on RUclips for 3D printing miniatures explains it.
Hey thanks for the input! I'm saving this for when I get a crack at one of these printers. There's so much to learn, but it seems like an awesome skill to develop, especially for those of us who love to paint minis.
Perhaps a silly question, but what clean-up is there on 3D printed models? I had a mad thought thinking there wouldn't be any mould lines with 3D printed minis. Is that correct?
about the yellow and pink thing I know nothing about color theory, but if you look at nature, like leopard geckos for instance. they kind of have a pink undertone and they're yellow? So maybe it looks good because you actually see them together in rl?
Interesting! Now I'm going to be looking at leopard geckos all day :-) There have been a few folks in the comments with color theory explanations which sound plausable... I'm gonna have to let that all rattle around in my brain some more!

Loving your channel man, so nicely produced and super informative.
Thanks Harry! That makes my day :-)
The resin 3d printers really are outstanding when it comes to minis.
Just found your channel! thank you for creating a great and positive place for mini painters!
Wow! Great job, great video!
Hey thanks Jacob! :-)
You are very good at painting. And you have helped me a lot. Thanks
This was such a cool video Brent! Keep it up!
Thanks Leo!
Great work, as always !!
Hey thanks George! :-)
So what's the advantage of adding gloss varnish before the wash rather than just adding some flow improver to it? Would both work?
Excellent tutorial and very, very, inspirational! Kind Regards Johnny
These look fantastic, great job!
Hey thanks! :-)
This dude's got a dungeon & dragons starter kit to cats a 3D printing machine and that sweet ass ponytail
These are bloody good and the paint job looks even better I'm going to at least investigate this Kickstarter and I hope I've got the money while it's still going
Thanks! Yeah these models are great, and that kickstarter looks quite professional (already hitting a bunch of stretch goals on the first day too!)
@@GoobertownHobbies I've just been eyeing it up just then. Only issue is I would need a printer and I have no clue about them
I did the "dot" highlight effect on a regiment of High Elf Swordmasters scale armors.. I will not be doing that again.. :D
Yeah, I don't know if it's a technique for regiment painting... :-)
Pink and yellow are opposites on the color wheel, color theory suggests that layering a color over its opposite regardless of the layers opacity
Another fantastic video, thank you!!!
The models and your painting loois great, I particularly like the orangy yellow one.
These are really cool and your paint job makes them look fantastic :)
Hey thanks! Yeah these came together nicely, it was a good introduction for ME into 3d printed models :-)
You ever watch those PBS farming videos, where it talks about folks from Iowa, growing random stuff, and interacting with their local, small-town community? Totally gettin the same vibe here. :)
It's amazing! These cat minis look like real life! :D
The quality on these printers is amazing.
Cant wait to do the same!
I didn't know about the vallejo water liquid, looks great and really adds to the model :D
Looking good m8ty. I got your site link from Lukes APS.
You are the first person I ever really subscribe to, man I wish I could be as free if my paint as you. I wish I could meet you in real life.
The Photon is no too expensive (between 300 and 400 $) but it takes some time to get it right, but when you get it done you get very good minis
This interests me! These minis were clearly printed by someone who knew what they were doing, but what an awesome skill to learn! :-)
The UV curing resin isn't exactly cheap, either!
@@GeneJordan no, it isnt, BUT 28mm minis take, on average 3-5ml of resin. So you get a lot of minis from each bottle.
Resin printers are awesome, but the resin scares the crap out of me. It’s highly toxic if you get it on your skin, and you u can’t just wash it off. And the residue from the process is highly toxic e-waste that you can’t just wash down the sink. Love the results but not for me. Love your work though.
@@GeneJordan True but it does last a while and can print a significant amount of minis.
They look great sir 👍🏻
Hey thanks!!! :-)
I’m definitely no expert on color theory but it seems to me that the pink under yellow works to make the shadows more orange giving you a deeper shadow that is also redish so that’s what gives it the warm appearance. Similar to using yellow to highlight orange you’re using orange to shade yellow
I'd buy that explanation! Fascinating stuff :-)
I agree, color theory is really interesting to me, I am a beginner however so I’m still just trying to find out information.
Lovely painting! I will steal your tidal basing idea for the Wrath of Kings Hadross I have incoming.
Those Hadross look awesome! Definitely a good team to give some tidal bases. Have fun! :-)
You should see the ended 6 filament 3d printer. There are barely any layer lines
Great content as always, it is very interesting to see what hobby 3d printers are capable of these days.
Alternatively you can warm up the model with a hair dryer a little to make sure you don't accidentally snap the model while removing supports.

@@torymiddlebrooks Yeah, I'll make danny teach me the ways when I get serious about acquiring a 3d printer :-)
Perhaps a silly question, but what clean-up is there on 3D printed models?
I had a mad thought thinking there wouldn't be any mould lines with 3D printed minis. Is that correct?
Really nice man the yellow and blue one are hella good
Hey thanks Gabriel!!! I'm quite happy with these dudes myself.
I'd really love to see how you did those bases...
Crazy that you can get that kind of detail.
For real, this blew my mind. The future is now :-)
about the yellow and pink thing I know nothing about color theory, but if you look at nature, like leopard geckos for instance. they kind of have a pink undertone and they're yellow? So maybe it looks good because you actually see them together in rl?
Interesting! Now I'm going to be looking at leopard geckos all day :-) There have been a few folks in the comments with color theory explanations which sound plausable... I'm gonna have to let that all rattle around in my brain some more!
Nice goobs! it looks so good
