  • Why DENMARK Wants to Eliminate a Public Holiday
    #danmark #denmark #danskpolitik
    In this video we look at a controversial debate going in Denmark surrounding Great Prayer Day (Store Bededag). It's a public holiday in Denmark, and the Danish government is considering whether or not to abolish it to fund an increase in defense spending.
    The proposal to get rid of Great Prayer Day (Store Bededag) is upsetting many people in Denmark, and proving to be a headache to the new Danish government and their Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen. It has managed to pit her against a united minority, Danish labor unions, the Danish National Church, and large swaths of the public.
    How will this debate end? No one is sure, but we take a close look at the growing and rapidly changing debate of Great Prayer Day in Denmark.

    A point in the defence-expenditure debate: Denmark has a borrowing rate of 11-12% of GDP, so we could easily afford increased spending on defense, without working more. Furthermore, our national budget is in plus with about 800 million USD (5,8bn DKK), so there's that too...
    The current government acts like we are in dire, DIRE economic straits, but in reality we are loaded, as it is currently quite cheap for Denmark to borrow money.
    But they are doing the conservative thing, which is acting like a national budget is the same as a household budget. And they'll get away with it, again, as not a single party of the opposition dares mention these facts, in fear of being called 'irresponsible'.
    Which is irresponsible.

      So true - a pay-for clause seems silly in a case like this and with a budget surplus in most years.

    • @Maitch3000
      @Maitch3000 Год назад

      Yeah, I don't trust politicians anymore on this issue. Whenever a new government is formed, they always talk about how bad the economy is the first year and then at the end of the term there is suddenly money to hand out to various groups in order to secure a reelection.
      The fact that we could suddenly spend 300 billion on corona, while also paying off our government debt and now we can't seem to find 3 billion, while our debt is at 11%.
      In 2022, there was a surplus of 50 billion. In 2021, there was a surplus of 110 billions. Yet supposedly our financials are miserable.

    • @Odins_Ravn
      @Odins_Ravn Год назад +2

      @Mbez Actually it is not about money, but rather about the fact that Danish society lacks approx. 50,000 educated citizens to fill the jobs in sectors where there is a great shortage, for example nurses - Denmark does not lack money at the moment the Danish state has a huge surplus of many billions of DKK. What Denmark is in lack of is qualified labor who have sufficient skills and will.
      Mette Frederiksen promised in the last election period for example 1,000 new nurses, but she can't do magic, and has now tried to steal a public holiday in order to obtain approx. 8,500 "educated workers" - that the money was supposed to be spent on NATO was just a cover-up to get the danes to accept the lost day off. .. the changing governments have throughout the last more than 25 years tried to solve the problem that Denmark is facing now and that all Danes knew would come due to the low birth rates in Denmark since the 1980s, i.e. the lack of young people there have abilities for education, and the way they have primarily tried to solve this upcoming problem is through migration primarily from Islamic countries - however, this has only made the problem even bigger, since more than half of the migrated foreigners from those countries are currently now on public welfare, which has been an additional burden because of lack of skills or will. And in addition, segregation in the population has increased because of all the problems it has caused, so instead of one problem to be solved there are now severals 🤕

I think it goes back to the Middle ages, as textile were exported in rolls of cloth from Flandern. These rolls got a lead sigil fastened to them as a certification, also Denmark exported salted herrings so a barrel, must have been a barrel in a constant measure. 😜

    I think it is telling that nobody in Governement wants to admit that they were the ones that came up with this harebrained idea. Had it been an issue in the election campaign that Store Bededag would have to be abolished, the Governement could claim that it had a mandate to do so. But nothing was said about this matter.
    It is true that currently there is a lack of people to work, but unfortunately this seems to be only in the short term. Unemployment is looming in the horizon.

    One aspect of the unions opposition to this could also be the earning of weekday-holiday compensation. A vast number of public (and private) employees work on these weekday holidays, and are paid extra for that.
    Also, the work/life balance is quite important, though I personally think that a holiday during the Fall season would be better than Store Bededag.. It always seemed to me that when you get to that Friday, you're kind of satiated with it ( "I CAN'T HANDLE ANY MORE TIME OFF!!!").

Our New Zealand centre-left government (the one that Fox news inexplicably calls "commy") recently *added* a public holiday to our calendar to celebrate our indigenous Māori New Year. The centre-right opposition party naturally objected and suggested if workers wanted an extra day's holiday to celebrate this, we could lose one of the others. 1. Arguments about X being done to finance Y are BS. All revenue go into one bag from which all expenditures are prioroitized.
    2. The real issue is an increasing unmet demand for workforce everywhere due to lack of young people to replace old people leaving the workforce. If less people have to do the same work, they each have to work more or accept a lower level of service in health care, elderly care, child care etc. where you cant just become more effective like they can in the production sector.
    3. The effect of a holiday on the national product is easily observed by investigating the economic effect of the variable number of workdays between December 24th and January 1st. The difference between Dec 24 being a friday and a monday.

      the thing is, people in Denmark tend to get paid on church holidays even if they have the day of, and those who do work both get paid extra and get another day off, people are going to loose that, although the government say people will get compensation it's not as much as they get now, and it is part of the "danish model" that politicians don't have any say in those matters it's the unions -and according to our constitution the Bishops should be involved regarding church holidays, we have a state church in Denmark however those thing usually don't get mixed , in America you claim to have separations of church and state however American politicians constant mix religion with politics, we aren't use to that in Denmark

      In Denmark we have strong traditions and lagely celebrate the same holidays. Just taking your individual holidays whenever and no shared festivities would serem rather cultureless to most of us. Most people would not associate Equinox with anything besides a rather bad thriller tv-series which ran on Netlix a couple of years ago.

      @Tree Frog101 For the majority of the population it isn't about religion. As you would know by now, most of us don't even believe in God. That's why it's important for our democracy to control the state church through taxes, government, and education. Not a massive Christian Nationalist Evangelical money lobby conglomerate in DC or a Supreme Court who decided that Christian private schools should be funded the same as public schools. I don't think it's a fair assessment to project US issues onto Denmark or the nordic countries in totality which does not have the same fundamental issues.

However, this reaction against taking away Prayer Day by the populace at large shows signs of a strong populace. America needs such a Holiday on an even grander scale. We should do 3 days of Prayer Day where everything shuts down, and there is absolutely no buying and selling, no eating, and everybody will be in their house for 3 days meditating and or praying..

    • @julianneheindorf5757
      @julianneheindorf5757 Год назад +4

      The quick answer would be no. It has become a firm tradition which has lasted for centuries. In Denmark, a king is either named Christian or Frederik. I don’t think anyone can imagine anything different.
      After Christian the I, the next king was his son named Hans. King Hans son was named Christian II. He was the king of all three Scandinavian countries plus a few other areas. Christian II was a crappy king with plenty of blood on his hands. He got into trouble with the nobility and took his revenge in 1520 on the Swedish nobility killing 80 to 100 nobles in a square in Stockholm known as the Stockholm bloodbath.
      He lost Sweden as a direct result of this bloodbath and indirectly of the Danish throne as he was deposed by his paternal uncle, Frederik I, son of Christian I and brother of King Hans.
      So for centuries the Frederiks were always one number behind the Christians.
      When Frederik IX died in 1972, his daughter Margrethe II became the first reigning Queen of Denmark since Margrethe I in the 1376 to 1412.
      Margrethe’s IIs firstborn son was named Frederik in order to bring a balance in the Christian / Frederik numbers. Crown Prince Frederik will become King Frederik X when his mother passes away.
      When Crown Prince Frederik’s eldest child was born, it was a total given among both Royals and the public that of course his first name would be Christian. In a distant future he will become King Christian XI. King Christian X was his great-great grandfather, Queen Margrethe’s paternal grandfather.
      Back in the day, only sons could inherit the throne. Queen Margrethe I was officially a regent in place of her young son, but when he died prematurely she managed to remain in power and rule in her own right.
      In Queen Margrethe’s II case she inherited the throne as her father’s eldest daughter as he had no sons. However, the government had to change the Danish Constitution to do so, and a referendum was held in 1953 in which the population overwhelmingly approved the change.
      However, the rule of boys before girls still stood, until it was formally changed to absolute primogeniture, and overwhelmingly approved by voters in a new referendum in 2009.
      So if Prince Christian’s younger sister, Princess Isabella had been born first, our next reigning monarch after Frederik X would have been Queen Isabella or Dronning Isabella in Danish.
