Fun fact: the first Julebryg on J-Day are served from an old brew-wagon pull by big horses for the Army officers at the Officer Academy at Fredericksberg Castle close to the Carlsberg brewery.
The brewmaster rolls a large dice against the Officer in charge of the mess hall , and the highest number on the 6 sided dice, will be the price that day for the officers
Love the video, miss J-Day.
Here in Norway, Carlsberg also gives us a Jule... Øl. Yes, here it looks exactaly the same, but its called Tuborg Juleøl not Julebryg. There is one other difference. In Denmark Julebryg holds 5.6 in Norway 4.5. Why? Well, beers stronger than 4.7% has to be sold in government run liqourshops here in Norway, so to make sure people can buy the beer in a normal grocerystore, they lowered the ABV. Also we currently only sell them in .5 litre cans.
When I lived in Denmark I worked as a projectionist at a cinema next to Rådhuspladsen in Copenhagen. And one thing I looked forward to every year was putting in the Tuborg Julebryg add into the add reel. I love that little Julemand turning around to chase the Tuborg Beer Truck! Now that's what I call Christmas! :)
Fun fact. The beer wasn’t even made the first year of the campaign. It was only a Merry Christmas to the
People . It started out the year after and was leftover beers amongst them are Den Gyldne Dame, Fine Festival with some spices and they didn’t need to make a new brew for Christmas. They simply didn’t realize that people expected to have a new beer ready.
I hope you had fun at Jailhouse. It’s the best bar in town.
I love J-dag, it's a great tradition. It feels kinda different compared to most traditions, as most of the events we celebrate through the year is confined to your home, while this is a single evening where you'll meet strangers or friends (that you'd normally not have at home) and get free beers.
And since the christmas beer is stronger, everybody kinda gets more buzzed since we're not used to the strong beers.
Great points! It really feels like a fun energy and people are far more willing to chat up a stranger and it’s super festive and nice - maybe from the Christmas spirit or just the extra buzz we have from the Julebryg 😂
I vaguely remember a couple of Jdays from high school (gymnasiet) in Aalborgs “jomfru ane gade”
I even more vaguely remember the dressing downs from my teachers Thursday morning…
😂 it had to be the hardest for the teachers 😵
I did celebrate J-dag in the 80's!
Bar-hopping was fun, but I slowed down to a halt, after my kids were born
...now I might have one, at a Julefrokost 😉🌲
hello from Hundested 🌸❄
Wow, that must have been so cool in the early days of the event - we’re so glad it’s still a tradition now. Too often the good times die out by 40+ years later.
One time in the nineties I came to school on a Thursday directly from the nightlife/morning pub after the J-day to do a math test. That was quite a hard day but I wasn’t the worst performer in the test after all 😀 Good old days with Wednesday J-days..
Haha wow, that’s hardcore Morten - we approve, you’re a legend 💪 🎅🏼 🍻
I've never actually gone out drinking on J dag, but I do get excited for the tv commercial, it never fails to lift my spirit
It’s a great sign of the season 😊🇩🇰🎄
"Earlier it was released on wednesday night"
No, it was on Thursday night, at 11:59 PM. And it wasn't so much the work places that complained about this, it was educational institutions such as universities, technical schools and colleges.
(And yes, Wikipedia got this one wrong - whoever wrote the article said Wednesday, and some people consider Wikipedia to be flawless. I went to technical school and one of my best friends had a bar back when it was Thursday, so I'm VERY sure about this...)
lol yes that Friday was always weird
I agree with this. At least during the 90's, when I was in Busines College, it was on thursday night. And the students didn't show up on friday :D Happy times. At about the same time a culture developed, when it started to become normal to go to the clubs at thursday night, besides on J day. We called it "Little friday". Maybe that was the tipping stone for the educational system. Because J day on thursday, probably had an impact on that, Tuborg got preassured into changing J day to friday.
Aahhhhaaaaahahahha "I can't drink a Valentine's card" 🤣 my sentiments exactly 👍
😂 he’s tried - it doesn’t work ❤️
🤣🤣🤣 soooo...equivalent to a dry Martini or....????🤣🤣🤣
When I was younger we’d take the day off from school and/or work and sit in front out local værtshus, waiting for them to open which was around 10 am. Then we’d order a so-called “lagkage”, which just is a box with 30 beers, and start warming up for the Julebryg 😅
It's not just Tuborg that release the christmas brew. Albani also release both theirs on J-dag, they are called Blålys and Rødhætte. I like blålys quite a bit more than Tuborgs, but I might be a bit biased as I am from Fyn.
Nice! There is some great beer from Fyn. This year we are also enjoying the Thisted øl Julekalender and always loved their julebry.
@@RobeTrotting Just like Jens Walter Birkemose, I too might be biased - but I really think that for a country this size, we Danes are blessed with a lot of excellent, locally produced beer. Glædelig jul, og skål!
x mas... is also one..
Blålys is the longest running Christmas beer that is on the market, also one the strongest at 7%
You guys should do a Julebrug tasting. Select like 6-8 different beers, and then each grade them.
Wow,I moved from Denmark in 1986 and I didn’t know about this tradition ! I think I’m coming back ha ha.
Thank you for your videos !
Yes 🙌🏼 come next year, we will save you a spot at our table Malene 😊🇩🇰🎄❤️🍻
I'm from the Philippines and my bf is Danish i'm learning a lot from your videos🙂👍 tak!
That’s so cool to hear, it means a lot that we know we can help others learn more about Denmark and adapt better to Danish culture 😊🇩🇰
A pet name for the beer is "sneøl" : Snow beer, from the way it looks! We always calls it sneøl in our house and among our friends!
Ah, yes - one of our Danish friends told us that too 😊🇩🇰🎄🎅🏼❤️🍻
Eller "fnugøl".
I often watch your videos, but for some strange reason this one made me feel..... happy!
Super J dag reklame som giver mig ekstra lyst til Tuborg Julebryg.
It's like a voksen-julekalender you're doing. Enjoying it, thanks! :)
Ive been waiting for this :D Awesome.
Also, bar traditions are that the first Julebryg is sold as an auction. And the 2nd is only sold AFTER the first one have been completely drunk.
You guys are so entertaining! Christmas greetings from Odense. You should do a video there sometime! I’d love to play Derek in a game of beer pong😄

(Edit: just saw the expression "Little Friday" started appearing in 1995 according to ordnet dk. Makes sence since that was the final year for me at Business College.)
Me, when you pulled out the Corona beers = 😆🤣🤣🙌💕 have a great weekend
really like the new intro .....and...skål..and new sub here
Thanks, so glad you found us 😃 skål 🍻
Also a fun fact. Its the worlds oldest continuesly (and unchanged) run commercial.
The J in J-dag is for Julebryg. 😁🍻 Skål!!
Mike, i LOVE your shirt 😃
Just been watching a couple of your videos, and damn, it hit me how much alcohol is involved in being danish. 😄
It’s one of the best days up to Christmas
On Fyn Albani is in the cane as well giving out beer and having it on tap.
Yes, we learned this from the comments, maybe we need to visit Fyn again next year and try Albani - so much good beer on Fyn 😊🇩🇰🎄🍻
goood video :D
Julebryg used to be released on a thursday at 23.59 (11.59 pm) back in the 90's, when I was young.
I did go to a few of them in the 90's, but I don't really like the taste of beer (but I am danish,) and then I had kids ect.
Beer. Yummy!
My favourite day of the year. I regard it as Danish integration. So much fun.
It really is so fun, we remember our first year well and had other foreigners who had been here longer take us out. We were hooked 😊🇩🇰🎄❤️🍻
@@RobeTrotting I read about it in Helen Russell's book, Year of Living Danishly, when I first came to Denmark. The prospect of free beer, well what's not to like about that? So once I started language school and November appeared on the horizon, I gathered a group of willing participants. We had a great night out, and it's a calendar event for me now. It's less than 11 months now until JDag, I just can't wait! 🍻
It's kinda like when Duffman comes to Springfield, but with a Christmas theme.
Also it tastes better than duff ( since you can actually get a duff beer. I have one on a shelf)
I never actually liked the brew it-self, I think the taste is awfull.
However I've been an avid beer-collector for over a decade and I was a bartender for tears so... bad taste or not - it's a given to have at least one or at least be part of the party somewhere :)
I no longer drink alcohol, have'nt had the desire since falling pregnant four years ago but J Dag is special all the same and I have very fond memories from it :)
You guys have to try the Christmas beers called BLÅLYS :)
We’ll look for it! 😊🇩🇰👍 🍻
I’m sure if they got the idea, some company would make a valentines day beer. Also christmas does not start until december.
Is the Jule Brew exported out of the country?
Im not sure, it has to be somewhere. Definitely available elsewhere in the nordics and they even do J Dag at some bars in Sweden.
I think Denmark, as a country, should put up billboards in airports and other entryways into Denmark, before it is released.
Just saying :"we are really really sorry, we will be back to normal on Monday" 😂
Wednesday? I remember it as Thursday ... I'm pretty sure it was Thursday one minute to twelve ... no matter I do not celebrate Christmas and j day does not really have any meaning to me ... but I participated when I was younger but it stopped when I was on a course in Middelfart which then fell into place with j day ... some of us (including a couple of course leaders) went to some bars and it went well until some locals decided to jump us ... it ended with a street brawl for two hours (5 or 6 vs 10-15) and a course leader with a broken nose who sprayed thick jets of blood ....
yes that was my last j day ...
Can you come to Nyhagested one day because i would like to show you one og the Last Villages in Denmark
Mvh Benjamin ellekær
PS i would like to se how good danish you are
the best part is FREE BEER! XD
It's a good thing Julebryg only comes out for a couple of months a year.
Exactly 😂 it’s good for a few weeks each year.
In Odense its Albani and I guess its Royal in Århus of J Day
Ah, that makes sense 😊🇩🇰🍻🎄
@@RobeTrotting Yes and there is still a bit of "local pride" in Denmark
Have you noticed påskebryg as well. Another posible episode
Yep, and P-day was big at educational institutions decades before J-day.
Hey Robe Trotting im danish and i dont see many americans talk about denmark
Hej Robe Trotting jeg er dansk og jeg ser ik mange amerikaner tale om danmark
Hej 👋 we do, because we love living here of course but we also want to help other people that move here learn things that took us a few years to figure out 🇩🇰
I don’t hate Christmas, I just don’t drink alcohol… :)
True, there’s an in-between category 😂
haha ye J-day is just an excuse to get drunk, like a lot of things in Denmark, and the Danish youth here drinks a whole lot!
hehe my wife was a JnissePige in odense Albani juleØl =)
If all that moved to Denmark, toke our culture to em like you guys do, we wouldnt have any culture problems in Denmark
the blue shirt is better
Hvor kan man få corona øl......OM"I"KROEN hahaha
Om I kroen 😂 ohhhh that’s good (even if it’s too soon)
lol you are cute you 2 lol
Thank you Nina 😊🇩🇰🎄
Back in the days J might also have been jule striptease
J = Julebryg
That makes sense haha
Tuborg has stolen the idea from Thor. BAck in the '70 Thor brew the X-Mas. And released the first days in november. But Tuborg stole the idea and made it for the whole country. So it was Thor who started it.
Den dag man ikke skal i byen. Jdag=ballade.
Everything is commercial, so of course this is too. it's also a wonderfully ridiculous thing to celebrate and yet another reason to get drunk with your friends. And what can be better than that?
Exactly 😂 I’ll take a little commercialism if they give me some free beer and a Nisse hat
@@RobeTrotting, nissehue ;)
Worst beer ever (Im Danish)
counter:
harboe pilsner or Brutalis
(i'm a dane too)
@@GarmrsBarking Ok Brutalis havde jeg helt glemt....føj
Harboe Silver .... so lousy.
