My husband is a runner and says no runners he knows would think anything bad because everyone has been a beginner sometime. In my experience runners are an awesome community of people who all encourage each other. My husband is an ultra runner and I've seen all encouragement and cheers for the new runners of all sizes. Good for you keeping it real and being vulnerable on here! Thanks

I agree! Especially RunDisney runners, I always feel so much encouragement bc everyone has been a first-timer once. Definitely do it again next year, especially now that you know the ins and outs of coral lineups, etc.

      @braasch77 Год назад +2

Absolutely! Almost all dedicated runners LOVE it, and are excited that others are beginning that same journey. Not only are they not thinking bad things about the beginners, even if they don't have encouraging words, they are probably having encouraging thoughts for you. Everybody, no matter how experienced they are at something now were a beginner once too.

I just signed up for a virtual Disney Run race. I would really like to do an in person one someday. I am going to be walking on my own. I am almost 50, and trying to get back into good shape. Many of us struggle. Thanks for all the good info!

Number one. Thank you for being vulnerable and showing all of this to us. It takes a lot of courage to face this head on and share. I’m so proud of you for getting out there and attempting this, and for going through and editing this all together. Being swept is not a point of shame. It’s a “not right now”.
Those nerves never go away. Even if it’s a distance you’ve faced before.
That bib pickup looks way more crazy than 2022.
I can tell you no runner will think that way about you. The RunDisney community of runners want everyone to finish. KT tape is my best friend on a race. Think of it like a bit of an exoskeleton.
Go do that 10K virtually at home and earn that medal. I know that you can do the miles on your own time.
If you go do revenge next year, vlog your training! I’m going to be attempting the Marathon and am hoping to vlog my training to keep myself on it. And I’ll see you there!

I walked the 5K at Castaway, using my cane. (I am 75.) Met many people giving encouraging cheers. Only made it to the Tower, (half a 5K). Cast members at the end gave me an honorary Medal which I treasure since I could never do 5K. Start with the Castaway 5K and you will be able to run, or walk it. Good luck. Linda (&Carl)

So absolutely keep going. Definitely try and work some hill work in your training if you can. I run around the boardwalk area to train for the elevation changes these races have.

I’m 5’3” and at one time 265lbs. I started running short marathons and eventually after dropping 100lbs after a few years of running, ran a few ultra marathons (100miles). Just keep signing up with a mindset of damn it I’m gonna finish this time. And once you get one finish under your belt, you’ll get addicted.

As a big guy myself who started walking and then running and adding in strength training I am so impressed by you and glad I watched your video. I have run 10 Disney races ranging from dopey to 5Ks with my kids. Start with the motivation that you have found today and build from there. Look at Galloway training as a way to help you judge training and time. Again congratulations to you for having the confidence to post this the confidence to even sign up for the race in the first time and for finding motivation to work towards whatever is next.

Being a70 year runner who just completed the Houston Half Marathon on Sunday(1/15/23) and having been running for 43 plus years, I have a couple comments on your video. I admire you for putting your self on video on your journey. Most runners don't judge other people for size or speed, we are glad to see you trying. If there are runners that judge you, they are jerks. This goes for people at the gym. Hills are tough especially if you are use to running without hills. You never mentioned what training you did for the 10K. Since you have almost a year before the 10k, I would recommend set up a training program to your level of fitness and you should be able to easily finished the 10k. Good luck.

You have no idea the gift you are giving by making a video describing what it is like to be swept. I am going to make note of this and will be ready to share your video in the future because in all the RunDisney groups I am in there is a lot of panic about being swept. Sharing your video and experience will make people feel so much better.

Thank you for creating content for large people. Your information is extremely helpful for people who are of larger size. I was once over 300 lbs. I lived many years being very unhealthy and expereinced the same issues you had mentioned growing up. You are extremely brave for trying a 10k. I have signed up for mostly 5ks and one 10k. I wound up injured from the 5k and could not participate in the 10k. Don't get discouraged. You will for sure complete your next 10k. You are an inspiration to all of us. Thank you so much for doing the run! I think you came out of the race with the right attitude. You can fail 100 times, but if on the 101st time you succeed, then it's a success. It's a not a bad thing to run and not finish. It's a bad thing to never run in the first place. So, you are not a failure for trying and being vulnerable to failure. You only fail if you never try. You tried. And your concerns about running at an incline are 100% legitimate concerns. I can tell you that there were a good number of races the inclines got me.
Come back to it next year. Just try to get that 4th mile down and you'll be very likely to finish! Train every other day if you have to.
I have been a runner my whole life and I have done up to half marathons. You are absolutely in the right mindset. Just never give up. Those thoughts that are telling you to give up is your anxiety. It's not what your body or mind truly wants.
I commend you for trying something new and try again next year. Don't even think about your weight. The runners aren't thinking about that. They are likely happy you are helping others learn to train for a race over 300 lbs. You're going to lose weight running in the long run, and even if you don't, it's making your heart healthier. No matter what, the actions you are taking by running is helping you live healthier.
I implore you not to quit. A 10k is difficult regardless of what you weigh. Even getting halfway is doing more than most. Get a really awesome pair of headphones, nice shoes, and tunes, comfortably fitting clothes, and train every other day. Start with the 5k and then train towards the 10k. So, one day get to the 4th mile and that's it. One day get to the 5th mile, then that's it. One day get to the 6th mile and you're there. It is advisable to overtrain to undertrain. Don't hurt yourself by training too much, but try to set your goals past the 10k mark if possible.
I wanted to comment to tell you not to quit. Even running/walking a mile takes effort to people who don't regularly do it. You are trying 6 of those my friend. Don't be so hard on yourself.

I used to be a runner and the running community has always been supportive no matter if you are just starting out or been running for years. I remember hating my first 5k run and a few years later I ended up finishing my first half marathon at Disneyland and loving it. Just starting a 10k with the intent of finishing it is a big step. Just keep on training by doing those 5ks and you will be finishing a 10k in no time!

The running community is vast and incredibly supportive we all started somewhere we have all had our issues in training and races so we can all emphasis with you. I was swept up in 2012 paris marathon and vowed never again! So far i jave finished the next 18 marathons including run disney dopey chsllenge.

I walked (because my knee gave up on me right from the beginning) and the balloon ladies caught up with me at mile 5.5ish inside EPCOT. I kept moving and was able to finish but I know some people got swept behind me inside the park so there’s no more “safe” zone. You did your best. Great job man you tried. A lot of people won't even try so that's a plus. Just keep trying and you'll get it done one day.

Listen I hope you read this and don’t take it the wrong way. I hope being swept maybe made you really evaluate the prioritization of your health. I was a larger boy at one time too we did an Alaskan crusie and to board the helicopter you had to be of a certain weight. They weighed me in front of everyone only so embarrassing so I took it as a sign and got my health together. You feel better and look better, set your mind to it Adrian you can do it.

Don’t beat yourself up! Try it again, get there earlier and get in the front of the corral. It takes a lot of courage just to start the race! You did an amazing job… use it as motivation for next year.

I understand not wanting the medal, but don’t give up on it- hang onto it and use it as extra motivation. If you don’t feel like you earned it, then next time when you do complete your 10K (and you will!!) earn it then. I signed up for a virtual Star Wars race with in 2021 and because of an injury wasn’t able to “earn it” until I completed my race this past weekend. It was a great feeling to finish anyhow, but was extra special knowing that I had “earned” the Star Wars medal too.

I just want to say, I was actually right behind you and your group at the expo for Merch. Like I was literally the person behind you. You and your group seemed so excited to be there. I think you should most definitely try again. You seemed so ready to be there. Give it another shot for sure! 😊

Yo, just watched. Thanks so much for your honesty and telling it like it is. I'm a big guy too that has been running for several years. I can tell you from experience that running is a great sport. I encourage you to keep going. You'll nail that 10k soon and I'm guessing you'll set your heights even higher when you do! I started doing 5k's in 2017 and eventually worked my way up to a Marathon. You can do whatever you set your mind to. Keep up the running. It's a great sport!

Thank you for making this video. I won’t lie, I shed a few tears for you but am so happy to hear that you’re motivated to give it another go. I started my Disney race journey about 7 years ago and know the stress of the Balloon Ladies is real. They passed me in my first two Disney half marathons but I was fortunate to stay close enough behind that I was able to finish. I’ve gone on to finish just about every Disney race series at this point but will never forget those early days. Just as you mention, there are always lessons and takeaways and I have no doubt you’ll wear that medal with pride next year. If you want someone to hang with you during the race and keep you pushing, feel free to reach out.
