Exactly, the same director made Dune, that is in itself beautiful. But when it comes to Aliens and this level of depth, Contact with Jodie Foster is the next best thing after this one.
I think she split her own votes with Nocturnal Animals, which was released the same year. Absolutely travesty up there with Will Arnett never being nominated for a voice acting Emmy for BoJack Horseman.
can't believe movie only won best sound design at the oscars.... no best movie,no best director for Denis Villeneuve, no best actress for Amy Adams, no best supporting actor for Jeremy Renner its the best movie of all time for me,and ive seen thousands of movies...
The key to understanding this movie is held in a few passages: -Language reformats the brain to new perspectives. -The Heptapod Language runs forward and backward; it's written from all directions simultaneously. -The Heptapods said "There is no time". The Heptapod Language 'rewires' the brain to perceive existence outside of linear time. Basically, you have the ability to experience the entirety of your lifespan all at once, which means just by changing what part of your life you focus on, you are physically there. It's not time travel in the classic sense; we experience time linearly, but once you learn the Language, you see all of the time of your lifespan as a fixed event that you can shift to being in as you wish. You can't changed fixed time, so there is no 'choosing' or 'changing', only experiencing what happened/is happening/will always happen. As such, Louise does not actually see THE future, only HER future...and past...and present. 'Present' is just where her awareness has been shifted to. It means, living in this fixed time 'bubble' that you never actually die. The Heptapods did not force this ability on her; it's a natural result of learning the Language and having her brain 'rewired' and her perception of time changed. Frankly, since there is no correlation between the Heptapod spoken language and the symbols they write, I suspect the Heptapods did not originate the Language, but learned it from another species in space. It's not 'love'; it's the mechanism of language. And I believe the "Arrival" of the film's title is the arrival of the Language in Louise. There is a moment where she slips into a reverie, where she sees the book she will write/has written as the World Authority Expert, when she sees herself teaching master classes on it, that she pre-remembers everything about the Language, which completes the rewiring of her brain and her ability to be anywhere within her lifespan. THAT moment of the arrival of the full knowledge and perception is the moment everything changes for humankind. Louise explains to Hannah that the disease is unstoppable, just like Hannah is/was unstoppable. Because it's a fixed event. There is no 'choice' involved; it will happen/is happening/always did happen. But Hannah's lifespan is fully contained within Louise's lifespan, which means Louise can see Hannah whenever she wants to, just by shifting her awareness. It's not mental, like a memory; Louise GOES there, IS there, PHYSICALLY. There's a reason that, when the Heptapods leave, their ships just evaporate; travel time is in the blink of an eye. All they do is shift their awareness to their home planet and they're there. No engines, no pollution, no exhaust or noise. At the beginning and end of the film, Louise musing to her daughter is saying 'memory' (which for us is a linear exercise) is something she has had to reinterpret for herself, now that she lives in a nonlinear fixed time event.
I have a solid theory why Heptapods dissappear instead of travelling to space. Heptapods are 4 dimensional beings, humans can only perceive 3 dimensions when they disappear. They simply went to the 4th dimension. To understand this theory more better watch Carl Sagan 4th Dimension video on RUclips its 7 mins 24secs long but it gives an amazing explanation of how dimensions work and how we perceive
"i forgot how good it felt to be held by you" such a simple yet profound line. this movie is one of my all time favs. amy adams is one of the best actresses ever. also, the soundtrack and motif of "on the nature of daylight" is soo beautiful.
@@mikeyshowpresents It's a beautiful melancholic piece of music. Unfortunately it kinda makes me blub now because of the association to this movie. Pavlov's Dog type of reaction I guess.
@@mikeyshowpresentsagree!. But …. Johann Johannsson’s OST is fascinating, especially the horns-like piece when they first meet the extraterrestials inside the ship. Talking about ‘time’….when i first watched the movie and listened to the OST on youtube and was blown away by it, I googled Johann Johansson: I found out that he had passed away only 3 weeks ago. Strange eh
Love this movie. Something to consider - the aliens knew their own lives from start to finish- which means that Abbott knew he'd die from the explosion before he ever set out on the trip. That's dedication. It's also worth noting that OF COURSE the Heotapods knew every human language long before arriving- the entire point to the visit was to teach their language. I can understand Ian's not being able to cope with knowing his daughter was doomed to die like that- and that his wife always knew- even before they first got together. That sort of grief has to be intolerable.
Thanks for some clarification. I’ve watched this movie 3-4 times, and understood that everything was going to play out regardless because she was already living her life through their language. But I never really thought that they maybe already knew English. They couldn’t just come in speaking English to also teach their language, because there aren’t enough words in English to begin to describe it
@@jebronlames4600 I think they had to make humans go through the process of learning it so they'd REALLY experience the "gift". Probably only a few adults per million will learn the language well enough to teach it- but there's a whole generation of kids that would change the world with their abilities.
Yes. And even more profoundly, they probably live for thousands of yours to have such a long time frame so that was even bigger sacrifice of him. Also to the point of them understanding english: they certainly do because when Louis was inside their ship for the last time she was talking english without any devices and he understood her and was answering.
@@bestistmate she could have chosen not to have a child, when Ian asked her shall we make a baby she could have said no I dk t want kids ever. She didn't though she thought about what was to come and said yes. So she could have changed her future if he wanted to but chose not to. That takes a very strong person to be able to do that
Louise could have changed her future, but then emotionally she couldn't because she already saw how wonderful & special her daughter would be. She loved her even though she didn't exist yet & to not bring her into being would be more heartache than watching her die as a teen, because denying that life would be like saying her life was a waste of time since it would be cut short. So Louise chose loving & losing over never loving at all. 💔 But dang it!! I still want to know what's going to happen 3,000 years from now that the Heptapods need help with!! 😮
Honestly i don't think she can change anything. Louise perceives the future, past and present all at once.. as they are. Every decision she makes, has already been made. Hannah, the phone call, everything. Just like Abbott, who already knew he was gonna die (thats why he showed up a bit late). Its all about the beautiful plan. The idea isn't about making choices. Its about living with those choices. On the brighter note, Hannah, from Louises perspective, will never die. Since time for Louise is perceived all at once, Hannah will always be alive for her in the sections of time where she is alive.
@@zorak964 yeah. The movie is worth rewatching and reading reviews about it because it is extremely well made and it doesnt insult its audience with extremely obvious exposition. Takes a lot of rewatches to catch on a lot of small things. There are a lot of symbolic frames and themes. Like a shot of Louise standing at door/window frame thats basically a large H letter.. H for Hannah ofc. The movie, while still being wrapped up somewhat for a mainstream audience, has a very deep and planned scenography
@@darkwillow1451 There's a kind of illustrative irony in the fact that every time we rewatch a film, we already know the outcome of every important decision made in it, every personal conflict, we know how it all begins and how it ends - and yet somehow we can remain emotionally invested in all of these things...
Love it when reactors get this movie. "Hannah" same backward, as forward. Like time. This is one of the best scifi movies. Right up there with the original "The Day the Earth Stood Still."
You two are great - involved, emotional, understanding. Your life experience makes you really understand and feel what's happening in the movie. Thank you.
Just found this channel and Sean’s face towards the end was 100% my face when we saw this opening night. I love this author but purposely have not read this story before the film. Holy hell it was so good.
My understanding of non-linear time is that the past/present/future happen at the same time. They show that when the General is saying his wife's dying words, they show her repeating them at the same time he's telling her.
It's not at the same time exactly. By learning their language she lives her life non-linearly. Which means her future can affect her past. One consequence is that this comes down on the determinism side in the free will vs determinism debate.
@@KevinLyda Yup. Basically, even if she had tried, it would have been impossible for her to change the outcome. Since she has seen it happen in the future, it HAS to happen. She just doesn't necessarily know the exact path to get there.
@@falxonPSNwhich is why I found the interview with the scriptwriter(?) for the movie, about his "disagreement" with the writer of the source material (Ted Chiang), kinda funny in a facepalm-y way. Basically, the scriptwriter wanted Louise to have more agency or free will, that she still feels like she has a choice. That it shouldn't feel like things are predestined in this world and he didn't agree with that aspect. But the thing is, his statements and what he did for the movie just solidifies the initial premise of the original writer that it is indeed predetermined. Whether if Louise' had a choice to have her kid even if she didn't have to or not, didn't really matter because it was already set in stone that she will do that. But that's what's great about this movie. It isn't really the predestination thing that's the focus, it's the feeling of humanity and the emotions around it. Whether if it's just an illusion of choice or not, isn't the point.
This movie (and book) beautifully expresses the idea called linguistic relativity or the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. It's the idea that the language you speak constrains or determines your thoughts or how you see the world. The Heptapods' language allows them to think in such a way that time is circular for them, not linear as it is for us. We only see time move forward; they see it at all points (past, present, future) equally well. In teaching their language to her, Louise started seeing the future and then learned how to control her retrieval of information from all points in her life (what we call memories when looking at the past, consciousness when looking at the present, and foretelling when looking at the future). Their language is the "weapon" they gave to humanity, allowing us to experience reality as they do. Very few movies make me feel the way this one did on any level. The Matrix gave me that same sense of revelation, and Contact gave me the same sense of connection and words for things we normally cannot express. The Game and The Usual Suspects gave me that sense of wonder of what in the world is happening? Lol. All top tier movies imho for different reasons. For simple beauty, I love Howard's End (but it doesn't remind me of Arrival on any level). Really enjoyed your reactions to this movie! Such a beautiful movie. It must be strange to know all the choices that will be made over the next 3000 years and still be unable to move yourself to make different choices wherein it would not be necessary to reach out to people on another world and ask for help with the future you created for yourselves because you could not make yourself do otherwise. The consequences clearly do not outweigh the rewards of such choices. This movie makes me think on so many different levels at the same time. Love it!
I watched this movie when it first came out on theatres. At that time, there were negative reviews (do you remember?) because it was in the sci fi category and I guess audiences were expecting 'star wars' kind of scenes. I confess I was expecting more action - yet it's turned out to be my favorite movies of all times. It unites my two passions - languages and sci fi. And how past, present and future are interconnected. Your comment makes me know how much you appreciate these factors as well. Unfortunately, there are many people out there who cannot appreciate what this movie is all about. Yet it's great to see other like minded people here! All the best to you.
Given your response to this film, I think you would LOVE “Children of Men.” It may be the most under-appreciated film of all time. A *masterpiece* of storytelling and film making.
One of my all time favourite films. I saw it in the theatre and remember the gasp when she said “…who is this child?” I love the premise as well. Which language we speak determines how our brain thinks and constructs concept. Much of the disconnect between the US/UK is about this. Our language is descriptive; much of the world is more conceptual. We experience the world differently because of the way we narrate our experience.
I find this movie endlessly beautiful, even though it evokes a lot of pain. I remember leaving the cinema, getting to my car and sobbing uncontrollably for good 15 minutes. One of my top favourite movies of all times. Great reaction from you gents! I would suggest you consider watching Amadeus if you havent already. It has stellar acting and tells a story of genius and jealousy and human condition.
Great reaction. If I can make a suggestion, afew minutes of discussion at the end of the movie would be good. Obviously we know you liked it, but there is a lot to unpack in this movie. For me, this movie poses a very existential question. If you knew the future, would you change things? I watched another reactor who said if they knew their child was going to die, they wouldn’t have the child. That says a lot about humanity. That people can be so focused on avoiding pain, that they willingly give up years of joy. Makes you think.
We had some thoughts at the end of the movie but cut them out because our reaction had been so long. We have had to edit it back quite a bit to get through copyright restrictions but we have noted your comment. - Mikey
Agreed. I was really looking forward to hearing your thoughts after the end of the movie. It's already 42 minutes long. Another 5 minutes isn't going to stop anyone from watching :)
You can't change the future. You only think you can. If she was going to change her mind and not have a kid, the aliens would have seen that and they would have shown her a future in which she choose not to have the kid. Once they showed her the future, the future was set.
To your last note, adding some more to the conversation, if you know your child is going to die, then choosing not to have that child might be less a choice for your own sake and more a choice for that child's sake. You might choose not to have that child so that you keep them from the entire ordeal of going through cancer and then dying In the way the movie shows it though, I don't think that you can see your future, and then change it. If you see it, that means it has "already" happened, so there is no changing it
As a divorced dad of a daughter Hannah’s age who is my entire world , this movie destroys me every time! 💜 this same director did the new “blade runner 2049” and the visuals and score are equally as epic , you’d love it and you don’t need to see the older version first like some people say, no need to.
I definitely think they should watch the original Blade Runner first though! While 2049 doesn't rely on the original, the original does add some more context to the story, and I think they would enjoy both of them even though they're a bit different in tone/style
I love how open minded you guys are. I felt the same way you guys felt. Instead of trying to understand, everyone just wants to go to work because their scared.
This os one of my all time fav, i remember bursting into tears when i saw it on theathers and since then Denis Villeneuve is one of my top tier directors. This is for me the best Amy Adams performance
I love the dynamic of these two, especially when he gives explanations to what’s happening in more complicated situations. I wish I could meet them and discuss movies and world events with them.
The depth of writing, ingenious editing, the purposeful imagery using cinematography, and supremely rich dialogue have created one of the most significant revelations in a film over the last few decades. “Who is this child” sent shockwaves through me at first watch because you realize they were flash-forwards. This movie still sticks with me and impacts my perspective since seeing it in the theater in 2016. “Despite knowing the journey” (referring to how complicated life can be) has to be the most thought-provoking contemplation on how we view our own trials and tribulations. I was fortunate to meet the film’s cinematographer Bradford Young in 2022 (look him up-you’ll be impressed with his stellar career). I was able to tell him how much this film and its intelligence and symbolism affected me. Your reaction to this video was amazing to watch because it showed that others received the film in the same way! We’re all in this journey of life together-but on separate paths.
Absolutely amazing movie! One of the best of the last 20 years! Was fortunate enough to catch this in theaters ♥ Contact (97) would be a great choice kinda sorta in this vein (smart sci-fi). Also Whale Rider for something not sci-fi, but well made
Just came across your channel and watched your reaction to this movie. There is nothing better than when reactors truly pay attention to a movie and “get it.” Thank you! INSTANT SUBSCRIBE! ❤️
That's something I notice about these two as well. They really notice the details and connect the dots as it's happening. A lot of reactors don't exactly have that ability. I don't give anyone any hate for not catching complex movie plots because it doesn't mean they're dumb, just that they have different thinking processes. But it really is a delight to watch two reactors who do have that ability to connect the dots. Arrival is one of those movies that is just a confusing mess if you're not able to connect the dots as you go, but it's such a rewarding experience for those who do have that ability
I've been blown away by you guys' reactions since I stumbled across your channel a few weeks ago. Absolutely wonderful content, thank you guys were being here! This movie is one of my all-time favorites. It's heart-wrenching and achingly beautiful with incredible cinematography. I first saw this movie when it came out in 2016 and I feel like the themes of the movie are more impactful for me the older I get. As for movie suggestions, another thoughtful, powerful sci-fi flick that really makes you think is Contact (1997). It's my all time favorite movie! I think you guys would enjoy it if you enjoyed Arrival and Interstellar.
From age 5 to 20 I had a Cairn Terrier. From 24 to 39 I had a Cocker Spaniel. I'll be 50 in a few months, and as much as I want another dog, despite all the joy and benefits having a dog brings; I don't think I can go through the pain again of that final trip the vets. Of walking out with an empty basket and collar and no-one can look you in the eye. The sobbing in the car. Perhaps I'm just a coward, but the pain of the loss is so overwhelming I can understand Ian's (Jeremy Remmer's characters') response. A great reaction to a great movie. Thanks guys!
Mikey and Sean, Bravo to two great guys who are authentic film lovers❤ I am very selrctive about who I go to the movies with😊 You guys have hearts, movie acumen and tears… I loved watching arrival with you… and you have best screen set up of the other reactions… I hope you get MORE SUBSCRIBERS YOU GUYS CERTAINLY DESERVE IT👏🏼 Thanks👍🏼
Thank you so much for your kind words. We have only been doing this for about 10 months so we are pretty stoked and we are gaining new subscriptions every day! - Mikey
Now that you've ventured out of the MCU I found your reactions to Arrival and consequently Interstellar. There are so many great movies but hard to make recommendations not knowing what you've see. Movies everyone considers classics are Shawshank, Green Mile, Blade Runner / 2049. Another commentor suggested Predestination and I agree it doesn't get enough love. Your reaction are fantastic and I can't wait to watch more . Thanks
Discovered you guys with the Interstellar reaction and I'll suggest the same thing I did then, plz watch Dune! It's directed by Villanueve just like Arrival and it's a world building masterpiece. Dune 2 is about to come out too! Loved this reaction and excited for more to come! Subscribed and liked
I would love to see a little post-movie commentary between you two gentlemen. Even just five minutes to extrapolate your thoughts and ideas on what you liked and didn't like would be fantastic. Thank you, and keep on reacting, and I'll keep watching!!
I always thought that besides her choosing to have Hannah, the choice that she ends up changing (i.e. making the right choice for Ian) was to NOT tell him that Hannah was going to die.
Neither was a choice. Both were/are/will be fixed events. When you take linearity out of the flow of time, time ceases to be 'invented' in each moment. Time experienced as perception means all events are as they are without a start or finish. There is no 'choice', only the illusion of choice. It also means no one dies; their lives just rerun. Louise learned the Language, gained the nonlinear perception/experience of time, and can now move forward and backwards at will within her own lifespan. Forever.
You both seemed as "gobsmacked" as I was in following where this went. At the end you feel overwhelmed with the enormity of what you just witnessed. Great review.
Have you noticed how in most alien invasion/sci-fi movies the aliens are united and work seemingly together. Where's in our world there's division and hatered towards each other. The key for us to advance as species is to work together and support eachother no matter what. But human nature will never allow us to achieve this. We will never advance as a species if we don't change.
It was such a beautiful movie. I had to watch it three times to realize that she was seeing the future. Because I was so caught up in the flashbacks or (flash-forwards) even though they said she sees the future I was too caught up in emotions at the time of watching it.
The director of ‘Arrival,’ Denis Villeneuve, also did ‘Blade Runner 2049,’ and the new ‘Dune,’ film. Would recommend other movies done by him. Not by Villeneuve, but ‘Children of Men,’ is super good, too.
This film broke me, its also great to see other blokes weeping at the parts that hit me too. One of, if not, my all time favourite film... no other film has made me feel like this before.
I don't know why they didn't sub it, but in Mandarin Loiuse says to Shang "Jiang jun, wo zai mei guo ying di. Jian jun, ni fu ren gei wo tuo meng le. [inaudible] Ta shuo ni ying ping jie yong qi lai bang zhuo zheng jiu shi jie. Zhan zheng bu cheng jiu ying xiong. Xi hui liu xia gu er gua mu. " Shang: "xièxiè, xièxiè" "General, I am in the American camp. Your wife sent a message in a dream. [inaudible] She said you should be brave/corageous to help save the world. War makes not heroes but orphans and widows." Shang: "thank you, thank you". sorry I didn't put the accents, that would taken forever.
I adore this film. I watched it a lot before kids and after my daughter was born. It’s even more powerful now, just like interstellar, this film is about people and relationships and not just aliens. I actually feel her anguish and pain in this film, it feels so real. Very powerful film
I'm really enjoying your reactions guys! I suggest u The Predestination, also this kind of movie, with one of the most mindblowing plot twists. Cheers!
Predestination doesn't get enough love but I agree it's another great movie. I enjoyed Reminiscence as well if you haven't seen it, has great neo noir look .....
Good reaction! I wasn't expecting much, but you overshot the bar by quite a bit. The more reactions I see to this, the more convinced I am that this might be my favorite movie. It's almost a mandatory rewatch at some point, and is rewatchable several times with not much lessening of the story impact.
~gets down on one knee and proposes to Mikey~ I’ve put off showing Arrival to my husband because even Interstellar didn’t make him one bit emotional (and we have two daughters!). Sigh. Well, you got my subscription! Emotional sci-fi is a good description of my favorite genre, so I’ll think of some good recommendations for you guys. 👍
If you haven’t seen these already you may enjoy “The Martian” (it’s NOT about little green men,) “A Quiet Place,” “The Green Mile,” and for a really enjoyable fun time , “Kingsman - The Secret Service.” Can’t want to see more reactions from your channel! 😁
I read your description and you wrote RIP Jeremy. I hope you didn't get it twisted that Jeremy Renner passed away because he didn't. However he did get into a pretty wild accident a year or so ago but he managed to recover really well.
Great reaction. The written short story is worth a read too. Its more than seeing her future, her whole life is echoing from the present moment. She cant undo what she sees. She would not see the child unless that was her future.
This movie is friggin' brilliant and I never get tired of watching it. I love movies that get us to think about things, like time in this case, in different ways. I also feel like in this day and age it would behoove those of us who are terrified of aliens or ETs coming here to start warming to the idea. Seems like more like a probability than a possibility at this point. The more of us who respond with fear increases the number of people willing to be boneheads like the guys who set the bomb in this movie. 👽
Denis Villeneuve always delivers with his movies. He is arguably the greatest living director at the moment. Also, noticed something in your description "Hawkeye (RIP Jeremy, love you buddy)" Not sure if this is an inside joke or something, but you guys know he's alive and well right?
Stumbled across your channel & have to say your reaction was so authentic & enjoyable to watch. Even early on when your theories weren’t quite right they were smart & viable. You even had me crying again. The first time I saw this I absolutely lost it. From the moment she says “who is this child” until after the credits rolled I just bawled my eyes out. It asks all those big universal “why am I here” similarly to “EEAAW” also did.
Language is their weapon, opening up time. We live in three dimensions-length, width, and depth-plus time as the fourth. We easily manipulate the first three: imagine a box you can measure and chop into smaller pieces. But with a 4D box (LxWxDxT), you could see every state of the box across time, past and future. Just as we manipulate 3D objects, fully accessing the fourth dimension would require a fifth. Louise uses language to tap into this fifth dimension, viewing her life in segments she can revisit, past or future-understand the language, and you can manipulate time, never losing your keys again! Also you should watch Dune Part 1 & 2
Thanks for your reaction guys! I hope to see more videos from you in the future :) Would you please consider having a short debrief after the movie, to talk about it and how it made you feel?
Great reaction guys, bit of mind bender like interstellar. You guys should definitely do "Sicario" next, its a great action movie with unbelievable cinematography, a great score, and a fantastic story line behind it.
One of my most favourite films of all time. I'd suggest Aftersun and Past Lives. Not exactly sci fi movies in the same vein, but they do deliver similar gut punches, or they did for me at least.
As for movie recommendations, obviously there are too many great movies to list them all and I’m not sure what you’ve seen. Here are a few suggestions. For sci fi, you’ve already watched two of the best with interstellar and arrival. Contact with Jodie Foster is pretty good. Alien and Aliens are classics. Shawshank Redemption is probably the best film ever made if you haven’t seen it. For some good entertaining movies, you could do Moneyball or The Big Short. Good Will Hunting is great. For an emotional movie, The Green Mile is fantastic. For comedy gold, you could do the Cornetto trilogy (3 Simon Pegg movies), especially Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead (the third one isn’t as good IMO). Classic movies I would recommend The Godfather (obviously). 12 Angry Men is a beautifully constructed movie from 1957.
Amazing Heartfelt Reaction that was and You guys are welcome for the Recommendation. :) Now my recommendation for u guys is PRISONERS (2013), BLADERUNNER (2049), SICARIO (2015). All from Denis Villenueve Filmography. Each one a Masterpiece.
I'm not sure what movies you guys have already seen but based on how few videos you guys have done I would say you have a lot of good viewing ahead of you. Do you want more good dramas? Good sci-fi? Some that come to mind are "The Prestige" (another Christopher Nolan movie) and Children of Men. A couple less fiction/more science ones are "The Martian" and "Gravity" and then lets throw in some good war movies "1917" and "Saving Private Ryan"
Another IMAX audience stunner. I'll suggest Ridley Scott's original Blade Runner, just so you can get to Mr. Villeneuve's sequel Blade Runner 2049, a movie in my opinion where every camera cut is memorizing. Also, the Cohen Brothers -No Country for Old Men.
One of the best movies I had the pleasure to watch, it always breaks me, always, doesn´t matter if I already watched it many times, it always breaks my heart. Beautiful
Same for me. Doesn’t matter how many times I watch it, knowing what will happen, when it happens it just gets me, every time. I end up crying my eyes out. It’s such an emotional film.
Mikey: "Please suggest more movies like this"
Us: "Umm... yeah, about that..."
Ive never in my life seen a movie like this or even come close. This is one of my favorite movies of all time.
Exactly, the same director made Dune, that is in itself beautiful.
But when it comes to Aliens and this level of depth, Contact with Jodie Foster is the next best thing after this one.
Contact?

There's a reason that, when the Heptapods leave, their ships just evaporate; travel time is in the blink of an eye. All they do is shift their awareness to their home planet and they're there. No engines, no pollution, no exhaust or noise.
At the beginning and end of the film, Louise musing to her daughter is saying 'memory' (which for us is a linear exercise) is something she has had to reinterpret for herself, now that she lives in a nonlinear fixed time event.
Also, in the chopper, Ian reads from Louise’s book “Language is the first _weapon_ drawn in a conflict”.
Thank you for this explanation. Really thank you ❤
Would love to hear you speak on other things pertaining to such innerstandings.
I've watched this movie a handful of times and had many questions. Thank you for answering them
I have a solid theory why Heptapods dissappear instead of travelling to space.
Translation of the Chinese phone call. "in war there are no winners, only widows"
Thank you. That is beautiful and profound.
Only orphans and widows.
Thank you for that. Makes the line more impactful.
That was such a cool tidbit to share!
Thank you for that. ♥️
According to a Chinese linguist, the line is actually, "In war, there are no heroes, only orphans and widows".
"i forgot how good it felt to be held by you" such a simple yet profound line. this movie is one of my all time favs. amy adams is one of the best actresses ever. also, the soundtrack and motif of "on the nature of daylight" is soo beautiful.
The nature of daylight is one of the most moving pieces I’ve ever heard heard. - Mikey
@@mikeyshowpresents It's a beautiful melancholic piece of music. Unfortunately it kinda makes me blub now because of the association to this movie. Pavlov's Dog type of reaction I guess.
it pearced me deep at my first watching. Amy Adams is seriously good.
Strange eh
@@mikeyshowpresents John Q Denzel Washington
@@jasoncaldwell5627 They have time, it's beyond generations, it's 3 000 years. At that point the whole planet will be speaking their language
@@yd8104 Maybe not. I can see many parents NOT wanting their kids to learn it
Yes. And even more profoundly, they probably live for thousands of yours to have such a long time frame so that was even bigger sacrifice of him.
Also to the point of them understanding english: they certainly do because when Louis was inside their ship for the last time she was talking english without any devices and he understood her and was answering.
She decided that a few precious years with her daughter was worth way more to her than never meeting her to begin with
she had no choice , that was her future
But dang it!!
@@darkwillow1451 I've watched this film about three or four times and never realized that about Abbott. OMG!
Love the palindrome time reference!
You two are great - involved, emotional, understanding. Your life experience makes you really understand and feel what's happening in the movie.
Thank you.
Thank you for your kind words. That means an awful lot to us. If you haven’t already, please consider giving us a subscription. - Mikey
They've been communicating with us through coffee cup stains this entire time!
I heard Mormons don't drink coffee, I wonder if... nah, I should shut up. 😉
And patio chairs left in the rain! I have a picture of one such incident but don’t know how to upload it.
For 40 years Close Encounters of the Third Kind was my favorite first contact movie. Arrival came along and now I see them as equals.
I like Arrival much better, but I know what you mean.
Close Encounters is still a fantastic movie, just very different from Arrival
@@falxonPSNexactly
Omg yes. One of my all time favorites. It begs for a 4k release.
YES
Second this!! Best movie ever made imo
One of the best films!
Perfect follow up recommendation.
Denis Villeneuve is brilliant, you have to give Dune a shot if you guys haven’t seen it yet.
I concur.
You might choose not to have that child so that you keep them from the entire ordeal of going through cancer and then dying
In the way the movie shows it though, I don't think that you can see your future, and then change it. If you see it, that means it has "already" happened, so there is no changing it
You two are now my favorite reactors. Please do more videos. 😍
We will!
Watching this a second time is an even more amazing experience once you know whats going on. Absolutely incredible movie
The Prestige by christopher nolan is right up with Interstellar as my favorites of all time! Would love to see you guys react to that one
Mikey's "Nooooo" at 40:10 kills me every time. One of the most genuine reactions I've ever seen. Love you guys!!!
Was fortunate enough to catch this in theaters ♥
Contact (97) would be a great choice kinda sorta in this vein (smart sci-fi). Also Whale Rider for something not sci-fi, but well made
Contakt with jodie foster and Matthew McConaughey is a amazing movie! Definitely one to add to your reaction list guys
Contact, one of my favorite movies, based on a novel by Carl Sagan himself. Masterpiece !
Whale Rider is SO GOOD. I don't think I've ever seen anyone react to it, but I'd definitely watch it.
Just came across your channel and watched your reaction to this movie. There is nothing better than when reactors truly pay attention to a movie and “get it.” Thank you! INSTANT SUBSCRIBE! ❤️
Thank you so much for your kind words and for your subscription. - Mike
Yup, same here. Just watched you guys for the first time, instant sub.
I have found my Sci-fi boys...........love the reaction guys! Keep 'em comin
I think you guys would enjoy it if you enjoyed Arrival and Interstellar.
great reaction Guys!
District 9 - great sci-fi....honest take on humanity
Definitely my favorite first contact / alien movie but also one of my favorite movies overall, it’s beautiful
I liked how one of the gentlemen got confused around 36:00 and the other one takes the time to make it clear. Cool 👍
what she said to the general to change his mind, (his wife's dying words) roughly translate to: "in war there are no winners, only widows"

Thanks
Thank you so much for your kind words, the next reaction is the green mile. - Mikey
Thank you for subscribing and thank you so much for liking our video - Mikey
This movie is special. It is the most beautiful, heartbreaking and painfully hopeful movie all mixed into one ♥
One of the best film reactions I've seen in a long time, guys. Top notch, brothers. The feels were real.
A movie that leads real men to tears
Have you noticed how in most alien invasion/sci-fi movies the aliens are united and work seemingly together. Where's in our world there's division and hatered towards each other. The key for us to advance as species is to work together and support eachother no matter what. But human nature will never allow us to achieve this. We will never advance as a species if we don't change.
Have yall ever see Galaxy Quest? It's damn near perfect & also about aliens.
Time Travelers Wife. Another film and story that will challenge you and inspire. And never stop.
Incredible film.
Really, really good!
Loving those highly-compressed voices.. So Amercain, Greetings from Argentina.
To me the sound design and music are the unsung heroes of this movie.
Yeah, I’m 73 and this convoluted plot line brought tears to my eyes too. Amazing movie!!!
I love this film. It’s a sci-fi film without the usual action-packed scenes. It’s purely emotional.
It was such a beautiful movie. I had to watch it three times to realize that she was seeing the future. Because I was so caught up in the flashbacks or (flash-forwards) even though they said she sees the future I was too caught up in emotions at the time of watching it.
Saw this in the theater and it was fantastic. I wanted to watch it again right away.
Max Richter - On The Nature Of Daylight (Entropy) is the song they played at the end and the end of the 3rd episode of The Last of Us.
The director of ‘Arrival,’ Denis Villeneuve, also did ‘Blade Runner 2049,’ and the new ‘Dune,’ film. Would recommend other movies done by him. Not by Villeneuve, but ‘Children of Men,’ is super good, too.
+1 for Blade Runner 2049
2049 exceeded my wonderings about it. Rather good movie, and a worthy follow up to an iconic movie. It thrilled me and moved me.
This film broke me, its also great to see other blokes weeping at the parts that hit me too. One of, if not, my all time favourite film... no other film has made me feel like this before.

@@mikeyshowpresents My pleasure!
We appreciate your kind words. - Mikey
Great review. You guys were so good in unpacking this complex movie and its non-linear time concept. Movie is brilliant--devastatingly beautiful.
If you haven’t seen these already you may enjoy “The Martian” (it’s NOT about little green men,) “A Quiet Place,” “The Green Mile,” and for a really enjoyable fun time , “Kingsman - The Secret Service.”
Can’t want to see more reactions from your channel! 😁
It was fun watching Sean blowing his mind and Mikey lost trying to follow the story line. Multiple times. Lol Great reaction Awesomeness
good grief that was absolutely amazing
I read your description and you wrote RIP Jeremy. I hope you didn't get it twisted that Jeremy Renner passed away because he didn't. However he did get into a pretty wild accident a year or so ago but he managed to recover really well.
Just dark humor. - Mikey
Ok! This reaction definitely got my subscribe.
You guys killed it! I was more wrapped up in your emotions than I was the movie.
my fav movie of all time fell in love with it first time watching, the sound track is a masterpiece too
Denis Villeneuve always delivers with his movies. He is arguably the greatest living director at the moment.
Also, noticed something in your description "Hawkeye (RIP Jeremy, love you buddy)"
Not sure if this is an inside joke or something, but you guys know he's alive and well right?
We do, that is Sean‘s dark humor. - Mikey
This is one of my favorite movies. I cry every single time. The non-linear time just blows your mind.
I highly recommend Coherence (2013). It's a low budget but very well made mind bender of a movie and I can't quite convince myself it's not possible.
This is all about how time isn't linear, as we all believe
Physicists agree that 'time' may not exist.
There is no proof that it does.
They can find no mechanism for its existence.
I recommend watching "Hachi: A Dog's Tale". It's an amazing movie
Masterpiece of a film and a great reaction guys.
I haven't seen a lot of movies in theatres in the past decade. But I saw THIS one on the big screen, and it was such an incredible experience.
Man I would absolutely love to see you two guys watching The Prestige, I trink that should be up your alley
I love that line "I need 20 minutes"... - MAKE IT 10. I love it
Language is their weapon, opening up time. Also you should watch Dune Part 1 & 2
another great reaction, thank you :)
No problem 😊
I don't know if you will see this 6 months later but you are my new favorite reviewers and this one of my top three Sci fi films
This is one of the great films that will be remembered
Great. Thanks for sharing. I had to watch this movie 4x to figure it out. Lol
I almost forgot that the first time you watch this, You assume that she is thinking about memories. Such a beautiful film
Thanks for your reaction guys! I hope to see more videos from you in the future :)
Would you please consider having a short debrief after the movie, to talk about it and how it made you feel?
Great reaction guys, bit of mind bender like interstellar. You guys should definitely do "Sicario" next, its a great action movie with unbelievable cinematography, a great score, and a fantastic story line behind it.
One of my most favourite films of all time.
I'd suggest Aftersun and Past Lives. Not exactly sci fi movies in the same vein, but they do deliver similar gut punches, or they did for me at least.
Aftersun is so fucking good.
Now my recommendation for u guys is PRISONERS (2013), BLADERUNNER (2049), SICARIO (2015).
A couple less fiction/more science ones are "The Martian" and "Gravity"
and then lets throw in some good war movies "1917" and "Saving Private Ryan"
Mikey and Sean, y’all are the mozz!
