The difference between watching this film when it came out in my 20s to watching it as a father in my 30s is a whole other level of emotional damage
Same. Both times I can appreciate the quality of the film and how it was one of the first movies to not dumb down the science too much for an audience, but the emotional impact is on another level from a young adult to a parent. It was absolutely brilliant how in a film that centers around space, time, science, and the cold threat of extinction, that we see so much of the humanity shine through, in the message about love, the way some resort to selfish self preservation, some self-sacrifice, and in every moment we can ask ourselves how we’d fare in that situation. Cooper is a far more selfless person than me were it to come to choosing my family over the tenuous promise of saving the world.
Im almost 30 now too and have no kids. :(

It's wild that this movie was considered "a lesser Nolan movie" when it first released. But as the years have passed, more and more people are recognizing it for the powerful emotional film that it is. Great reactions as always! :)

For me, this was #2 of Nolan’s films behind TDK right off the bat. I was blown away by it. I saw it in IMAX the night it premiered and I remember saying afterwards to the friends I went with that this is the sort of movie that justifies the continued existence of movie theaters. I remember saying the same thing after Inception before it, and again just recently right after Oppenheimer. Nolan, Villeneuve, and Tarantino are some of the few filmmakers left keeping that experience not only alive, but sacred.

For me when I left the theater I HATED it but loved the visuals and music. It took a second viewing for this to be in my top 5. I couldnt get passed the power of love stuff in the teseract BUT Ive grown to just accept its 5min of dialog I dont like in a 2+ hr movie and I like what is happening in that scene sending the signs just not the dialog.
Saw this in the theaters with my dad with a son’s prospective and it tore me apart…now as a father of 2 and watching it as a father’s prospective..the emotions are even stronger!..one of the best movies ever made

I remember the day it came out and i wanted to watch it and went to cinema.. and its rare i go there 😂
I got my wife to watch it as she had never seen it before, and she couldn’t stop herself from crying when she realized he wasn’t the hero of the story, but his daughter was.
I feel like they were both the heroes, Murphy couldn't have saved everyone and the world without her dad sacrificing himself to go into the blackhole and inputting information into the clock hand, Cooper wouldn't have been a hero if it wasn't for his children, he wanted them to have a future and save them which is why he left in the first place.

Just in case you didnt catch it, when Anne Hathaway's character instinctively picked the right planet based on love shows that love is a gravitational force and can travel across spacetime on the quantum level. This is how McConaughey was able to help murph in the end, also humans being helped by actions from the future. They let love be the powerful force of nature that it is and as their compass.
I noticed they didn’t catch that either. The concept of love transcending space and time is truly mind blowing and adds another amazing level of emotion and awe to the story.
except love isn't a gravtitational force but an inconditional feeling which guides you where you need to be. still love the movie though
I would like to give some scientific refinement to your sentiment; Our consciousness is non-local. Meaning it does not exist in three dimensional space time. Therefore it is not bound by the laws that govern three dimensional space time. That is why the experiences of consciousness, like love, can transcend space and time. Gravity is yet to be determined whether it is exclusively a three dimensional phenomenon, or something that exists in higher dimensions. It is an ongoing investigation at present time.
Edit: I also want to note that the explanation of consciousness being non-local is a scientific theory held by many prominent theoretical physicists. There are many studies that demonstrate consciousness being non-local. In fact there are mathematicians and theoretical physicists that would argue all of reality is a result of consciousness. Our conscious mind literally collapses quantum probability into the three dimensional reality we experience with our sensory organs. Without consciousness, the universe would not exist.

The physical universe does exist, and it would exist even if we weren't around to see it. Our brains take in all the spacetime goop and translate it into something that we can roughly understand as the 3 dimensions around us. But even if we weren't here to see it, all the spacetime goop would still exist anyway. Humans aren't some magical beings that spacetime can't exist without. We are without a doubt vastly more intelligent than any other animal on earth, but if humans didn't exist, reality would keep chugging right along, and all the less intelligent animals would still perceive it
Yes, our minds "collapse" spacetime into something we can perceive as 3 dimensions, but everything out there just keeps existing even if we don't

For all the citicism this movie gets, no other Nolan movie has been so profoundly emotional, awe-inspiring and utterly ambitious. I don't know if it's my favourite Nolan film but I cannot deny just how impactful and beautiful this film was and is to me. Great reactions.

It's the third highest rated Nolan film on IMDB though. Just behind Inception and The Dark Knight. But I do agree it's a wonderful movie, and it can bring most people to tears for sure. I love it.

The greatest movie of all time, for me personally. I’ve caught grief from people who disagree, that’s fine, but no other film has the ability to make me feel the way Interstellar does every time.
I highly recommend Arrival, as others have. It’s fantastic!

@@mikeyshowpresents yes!! He (Denis Villeneuve) also did Blade Runner 2049. He and Nolan are my two favorite directors. They both make movies that:
1. Are visually stunning
2. Have jaw-dropping soundtracks
3. Are extremely intelligent, thought-provoking, but also deeply human and emotional.

It is very hard to really label just one movie as the greatest, there are just too many deserving of that title. At some point I don't order them, which is why I don't have a top 10. There is just a collection of works that are all labelled as "the greatest ones", that's where I put it, together with others that don't need to be further categorized.

This line starts the ugly crying for me EVERY TIME. 😂
I think the design of the earth tech in the first arc of the movie is really intelligent. Because there's a global food crisis, they don't bother designing fancy gadgets like we're used to seeing in futuristic movies. Instead, a lot of the tech actually reverts BACKWARDS, to what's cheap and easy to make. Only the software has advanced: AI powered farm equipment, automated drones, and aging military robots.
Something I think is really amazing about this movie is that when Nolan approached Hans Zimmer for the soundtrack, he asked Zimmer to compose something that illustrates the relationship between a father and his child. Zimmer knew nothing about the plot or even the genre. While the movie is this crazy sci-fi concept, the soundtrack keeps highlighting the true theme of the love he has for his daughter - similar to the concept Brand described when she was saying love transcends dimensions and was driving her to see Edmond.
28:37 so here’s an interesting fact for you. So this movie was released in 2014, and Nolan consulted a lot of scientists for this film, including the theoretics of what a black hole would look like theoretically because at the time we had never had a photograph of one. and I think we got our first picture of one like last year and it looks so similar to what’s presented in this movie. It’s crazy how close it is.

The fact that Gargantua had an (edge-on view) "ring" (The Accretion Disk), but ALSO had a circular Halo, Above and Below: That Halo is the the gravity BENDING light AROUND from the Far Side of the Disk, then-visible to us 'above' and 'below' the black hole !
The telescope photos catch something else: the Doppler effect - because one side of the disk is moving (rapidly) Away from us, and the other is moving (rapidly) Toward us.
That was omitted in the movie effect, on the assumption that movie viewers would more relate to a celestial object that was 'symmetrical'.

I remember watching this before I was a dad. It hits SOOOOO much harder after becoming a parent. I teared up the first time through...I am absolutely bawling my eyes out watching it as a parent. One of the greatest movies of all time.
I couldn’t agree with you more. I have three boys. I have twins that are 14 and my oldest is 17. As you can see by my reaction, clearly I was thinking of them as I watched this film. It really does hit you harder when you’re a parent.

That scene pulled some strings before but it hits like a truck now.

Seeing this movie in IMAX is insane. You have to see it in 2024 for the 10 year anniversary. It changed my life. Saw it 5 times in the theater.

I did the exact same thing with Inception. No spoilers in case the boys have not seen it, but that last scene caused me to question what had transpired, so I needed to see it again.
This is my favorite film of all time. I don’t think anything can compare to the emotion, the anxiety, the visual stimulation, music. Everything about it is perfect. I still remember walking out of the theater as a 20 year old kid and just being dumbfounded at what I just watched. Trust me it’s even better the second time around. Most don’t grasp the complexity and the weight of the story the first time around. Well done on the reaction gentlemen. I’m glad you enjoyed it as much as I did

Dito. It was a saturday night and I went straight to bed after coming home. I did not want to just watch some TV and I did not want to talk. I wanted to process what I just had witnessed calmly and by myself. I was so stirred up even though I do not even have kids.

A cool detail to the film: In the background soundtrack when they land on the first water planet, there is a ticking sound. Based on the seven years per hour effect, every tick you hear represents a day going by back on Earth. Nolan decided to include that.
When I saw INTERSTELLAR for the first time in theaters--on an actual IMAX screen, to boot--I felt such a variety of emotions that no other movie (before or since) has induced in me. I was mostly in awe of it. Swells of emotion. The visuals were beautiful. The music lifted me. The tension struck new chords in me. The acting wrecked me. I was happy, I was sad, I was thrilled, I was worried; I even chuckled at some points. This movie had it all. I left the theater with such a wide grin. I remember telling the others in my viewing party (which included my wife) that we just watched Nolan’s masterpiece and that it was probably the best film I’ve ever experienced--because it was not just a movie, it was truly an experience for me. I ended up watching it on that same IMAX screen again soon after. And then on a regular screen somewhere else the next week. And then on a so-called (not so big) IMAX” screen (i.e., a LIE-MAX) at yet a 3rd theater sometime after (to cleanse my viewing palette from the smaller screen at the 2nd theater). So I saw this movie in theaters four (4) times, which is something that again, has NOT happened before or since.
INTERSTELLAR is currently my favorite movie of all-time. Funnily enough, my previous all-time favorite was also a Nolan classic: MEMENTO.
I really enjoy watching other people’s reactions to INTERSTELLAR. My wife doesn’t understand what I like about such content but it just brings me joy to see others experience this movie. It’s almost like I’m watching it for the first time again. 😊
UPDATE: I don't know how I was so lucky, but I recently stumbled across the INTERSTELLAR movie page on the Fandango website last week and noticed that a theater about an hour away from me was playing the movie this weekend. So of course I had to make the drive to go see it (I caught the Sunday matinee). So now I've seen this film five (5) times in a cinema.

I saw it in the movie theatres. I was speechless when I came out. Completely numb. It was a feeling I’ll never forget.
I love introspective and attentive reactors who analyze the heck out of films by pausing them nonstop to discuss with eloquence, even if their hunches are wrong... the best parts are actually being off. LOL
I saw this in the theatre and I can only speak as a father with children. It was like it reached into your heart and squeezed it thinking about your own kids.
The score to this film is amazing too, cannot go unnoticed.
As far as movies not based on a book but pure cinema, this is in my top 5 of all time. If not #1. It caused me to dig back into all of Nolan’s work and he may be my favorite director. Great reaction guys. This is wonderful storytelling.✌️

Gonna do my University graduation project on it, I'm a film student and it's my favorite of all time so it was a no-brainer for me.
This was insane in theaters. If it ever gets a re-release, especially in IMAX, you gotta go see it. We caught it in 70mm and it was life changing. You've gotta hear that score at the volume it was meant for.
This movie brings me to tears EVERYTIME i watch it. I think it really resonates deeper with parents. Imagine being gone for just moments and missing their entire growth, and life. That is the part that makes me the most sad.

@@mikeyshowpresents I was able to pick up on that when I first watched it as a kid, but they trick you anyway: one of the "interviewees" (the one who says "My dad was a farmer, like everyone else back then...") is Old Murph spliced in! I didn't even realize it until my 4th or 5th viewing!
A small detail many miss is that Brand feels compelled to choose Edmunds' planet because of love and gets ridiculed for it, yet she ends up being right that it’s the habitable one (hence why she took her helmet off in relief in the final shot) demonstrating the movie's message about love transcending space and time.

It was an amazing, gut-wrenching and emotional ride at the time, and every, single, quality, reaction exponentiates that to this day.

Hard to imagine that a sci fi movie could pack so many emotional gut punches. Nolan's a genius. I would suggest Inception by Nolan. A real rollercoaster of a ride.

One of the best Sci Fi movies of all time in my opinion. The soundtrack is simply amazing. I am just hoping that they will return it to the BIG SCREEN sometime in the future.

Near the end of this masterpiece's theatrical run, no one else in my family cared that much about it, and I was working 4 days each week 3000 miles from home. So I saw it in a distant theater, already feeling lonely, with only one other person in the theater way back in a corner somewhere. I could marvel and grin and cry alone. It was perfect.
They had a lot of help portraying the physics in this movie. One of the producers is a Nobel Laureate in Physics. The visual effects alone resulted in the writing of three different scientific papers on black holes.
I lost count on how many insterstellar reaction videos I´ve seen but God... that was THE best I´ve watched by far. Thank you very much for your time and effort doing this amazing video!

I always enjoy seeing a fresh reaction to this movie. I also want to say also that seperating the voices from the music with AI in some sections was a very clever thing to do, that is not something I would be able to think of.

I saw this movie for the first time in IMAX and I was in absolutely awe the entire time. I didn't want it to end and I left the theatre with such joy and wonder in my mind. Between the visuals and the film score and the gripping story of family and human losses and triumphs it's such a treat to watch. I'm glad you guys felt the same.

Fun fact for you guys if you didn’t know already. When the crew arrives on the water planet, the significance of the time dilation is emphasized once they leave the ship. You’ll hear a ticking the entire scene. Each tick is equivalent to one day on Earth. They occur every 1.25 seconds.
Guys, this was a FANTASTIC reaction. It's everything I want when I look for movie reactions. To re-experience these wonderful, powerful, resonating emotions that these films evoke in us. I truly felt like I was back in the theater watching this with my friends for the first time again. This is one of the truly most magical things about movies for me. Y’know. I’ve understood how time dilation works for a while. But it never really struck me as hard as Connor seeing his kids so much older in the span of what felt like a New York minute to him. It’s such a visceral punch in the gut.
It’s amazing how this film can be relatable on so many levels. I am 32 still no kids. But I remember my father when he was in his prime and me as a little kid. He worked all his life in counter terrorism and he was a lion in his prime and now he is 76 and it’s my turn to take care of him and keep him company. It feels like outgrowing him in a sense and recalling on my relationship with him and how things comes full circle in a weird way makes my heart burst with emotion.

Saw this when it came out three times. Cried harder each seperate viewing, and even worse when watching at home, never understood the people who dismiss this film because of the science and not feeling the emotion of the characters.
One of the fastest subscriptions to a channel I've had in years... You guys are awesome, this was one of the best reactions I've ever seen to this film! Watching people who haven't seen a film you love go through the same stages of wonder, excitement, and grief as you did on your first viewing is the next best thing since you can't wipe it from your memory and experience it again yourself. Time to go through this channel now, and spend the rest of my night watching you guys react to other stuff.

Fun fact about the movie. They wrote the music for it before they wrote the script. They listened to the music while writing the script. I did a whole research paper on this film in college.

Nolan told Zimmer that it was a movie about a son and a father, and that was basically all he told him. He didn't want the typical sci fi music and didn't want Zimmer to be influenced by that.@@mikeyshowpresents

Greatest movie of all time! The way this film illicits pure emotion from the viewer is next level. I cannot wait to show this movie to my kids when they’re old enough. I’m sure you watched this movie when your (our) kids are around 14-15 so that they can understand it enough and I bet you cried your eyes out like you always do. I think that movie specifically hits men and fathers. The natural strive to be a hero, the sacrifice to secure your family, the technical and scientific challenge, the atrocious feeling of failing your family or if they think you've failed them. It's like it's a movie made for men, it cuts deep.

Interstellar is by far my favorite movie of all time, I love everything space-related, and the feelings and the amazing movie work behind make it such an amazing movie. No matter how many times I watch it still brings a tear to my eye.

Great reaction guys! I saw that in the cinema and it was overwhelming, especially the sound. And then you have these quiet moments which punch you in the gut.
I loved ur reactions and thoughts...I ve seen this movie twice at the cinema and it was like the same rollercoaster all over again, and every time I see it I get emotional as hell. One of my fav movies ever
I first saw this movie in imax with my little brother, mother, and step father. My little brother was sobbing beside me for half of the movie, making it hard not to join him, while the parents were confused by the time dilation aspect of the plot and annoyed with mcconaughey's accent. (???) We left that theater as two groups with opinions more different than any other film I've seen.
Idk if y’all realized but at the end brand was at edmunds planet. He found a planet where we could thrive and started a colony. She was right because of love. Just how copper had a connection to murph cuss of love as well
You all did such a great job breaking it down and understanding it on your first watch. It truly is a beautiful film. From the story, to the score, the shots, the message, the science, even the set design.
By far one of Nolan’s best films. So beautiful, so moving, the score, the emotion, people didn’t love it when it came out but it’s made such a comeback now that people have realized the raw emotion of this film. Thanks for the reaction!
I've watched it once a year since it came out and it was my favorite movie the first time I watched it. Even Rotten Tomatoes says 86% audience score and when it came out the people I talked to who watched it all liked it. Not sure where all this sentiment is coming from in that it was not well received/people didn't like it as some people are suggesting in the comments.

Awesome, thanks. You should watch Contact (1997), from the great Carl Sagan. It has a lot in common with Interstellar in the sense of being SciFi with some wild concepts, but produced in a science-real way, having a strong female lead, having Matthew McConaughey.

The emotions in this movie is just masterfull. The older you get and re-watching it, the better it becomes.
To this day, the BEST experience I had in theaters ever was the Docking scene. The whole room stop breathing during that scene it was incredible. You could hear a fly (if the soundtrack wasn't there ofc).

I was lucky to watch this twice in theatre. Still feel fresh even after these many years.
That place in the black hole is a 4th dimensional Tesserack which bends space and time. We can view our own time in each of the tesserack interlinked with time of our past. Basically, its a time bound machine where we can send messages back into our past. He was the one whs hand shaking her in that spaceship welcoming brant. He travelled to the future but how did he wennt to the station murph which is orbitting around saturn. So he went in the blackhole and spent those hundreds and he jumped out of it or saved by the earthlings in fifth dimension some how murph figured it to live in a fifth dimension solving the gravitational equation which led to the scene of fifth dimensional space station.
I just watched this reaction. I was impressed with how caught up you became in it emotionally - like it wasn't "just a movie". When this movie first hit some compared it to Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey". It seemed you liked this, at one point one of you said this movie was shot beautifully. It was and I love Nolan, but Kubrick is considered "best ever" by many, including me. Kubrick was a still photographer before making movies and his films are REALLY shot beautifully, ALL of them. If you like this you must do 2001. A group of 480 directors recently voted 2001 the best movie of all time (not just best Sci-Fi), it was done in '68 but looks like it could be current. It was a major special effects (in camera, no CGI in '68) leap forward at the time. It's also the first truly serious outer space Sci-Fi movie ever, most were very campy before 2001 with toy-looking effects. You may be familiar with "The Shining", also by Kubrick and again a serious horror movie in a genre that rarely made "serious" films. If you're not familiar with that it's also a classic.
