The arrows having water collision likely comes from general necessity. Since Ice Arrows could now freeze water, it meant that arrows had to hit the water to register the freezing.
there are ice arrows in the gerudo training grounds in oot. though they're not needed to complete the game, they're still there so the water collision necessity doesn't count when what they added in mm is water drops flying to indicate that the arrow went through
@@abela1228 The Ice Arrows did exist in OoT in the Gerudo Training Grounds, yes. But in OoT, they didn't have the power to freeze water. They just froze enemies, because, indeed, they were not required to beat the game. Since it didn't freeze water, collision for them wasn't needed. MM brought in the ability to freeze water for the Ice Arrows as it became a tool for solving puzzles, so the arrows have the need to connect against the water for the game to register when an Ice Arrow has touched water and needs to generate an ice platform.
I think a similar explanation applies to the roll. I think Goron Link's roll needed to break things and they reused code from Link's normal roll... but then Goron needed to break pots and bushes so they were flagged as being breakable by rolling.
@@verdantmistral442 I think it might just be for game flow too, since it would be easier to navigate small obstacles like pots and grass if you can just roll through them. I’m not sure if this is subtle, but I’m surprised by how little people talk about the changes to link’s model between OOT child and MM child. There’s a lot more detail in the MM version, a comparison would be pretty cool
I always took it as a progression of time - Link is a bit older in MM and a bit taller, which also accounts for his being able to wield adult weapons and do more damage with things like his roll attack.
6:43 Probably the feature was removed because there are a lot of times in MM where you just stand still waiting for something to happen and it would get kind of anoying to get your camera "corrected" while you're watching an especific place
In majora the camera likely doesn't move because of the real time system, often you need to wait and watch for something specific and they made sure the camera wouldn't fight you.

Weirdly, when MM stuff was being revealed in Japan the picture of Grog actually had him with fish, but already had the mohawk at that point. Though whatever they had planned for him seemed to change.
@@whisperinwind87 You can only meet Grog at night in OoT and during the day in MM, so I think that's where the different skin tones come from. I don't think the models are any different on that side.
Man, I love the outro on this video, it's just simple and comfortable. Your video format is very pleasant and you bring information that I often didn't even know about. Nice.
For the rolling into objects section, my take is it was made that way in Majora's mask because there's multiple points where Link might be without a sword (upgrading, stolen, etc.) so it can prevent locking out if they're in the way.
Awesome video! The debug camera makes these extra enjoyable! I wanted to point out a small and maybe not so remarkable detail for ocarina of time. When link is talking to an NPC, he will continue facing the head of whoever he is talking to. This is best demonstrated by talking to gaebora kaepora on top of death mountain when he offers to take you back to kakariko village. If you position link right under him and talk to him, link will spin around to face his head whenever he cranes his neck as he usually does. This might be possible to demonstrate in other instances as well.
Hey I've been watching your videos alot recently and I love your attention to all these small details and videos where you show me things about Ocarina that I never knew. I have a couple cool details that I wanted to cover on my channel but I have something going on thats taking my time, and I think these would suite your next video. 1. Grog actually had a full set of hair and it's still available in the games files. This was uncovered by a discord group that's currently working to compile MM for a possible future port. There's a code present in his script that collapses his hair. That's why there's one angle where it looks invisible it's so thin. A similar thing can be done to links body using GameShark. Maybe his hair was too buggy and after collapsing just went with the mohawk to save on time. 2. This one's really small, but if you remain idle in MM the camera will zoom in slow as molasses. I have to play it sped up by x200 to notice the change but you'll be surprised how much it zooms in. Almost goes through link but eventually the distance begins to cap about a foot away. 3. Majora won't shoot lasers at Fierce Diety Link. I found this while creating a battle between Majora and Ganon. During which I studied alot of they're attack habits and values that affect the battle. Theres a code that controls when Majora can reach it's next phase of attacks (which includes the laser) but the code will deactivate it's self when you play as Fierce Diety. Change into any other mask and it reactivates, so I guess it was intentional. Thats all I got, and if you'd like to get up with me, I'd gladly get you some footage of all of this. Keep on rocking out these good videos Looygi!
That laser prevention sounds interesting! Like lore wise I wonder if Majora is too scared to use the laser, or if Fierce Deity is somehow preventing it from firing with a magical aura or something. Gameplay wise it's probably just to make the Fierce Deity mask an even better option/reward for the final fight. Also I would LOVE to see a fight between Majora and Ganon!
I wonder if rolling to destroy the grass/pots in Majora was implemented so the player had a way of easily doing so, in case Link was without his sword (whether it was stolen by the Takkuri bird or left at the Mountain Smithy)!
Literally was about to comment that. Who knows how long the Sword would be absent for during the upgrade at the Smithy. They could've planned on it taking a full 3 days originally (And since a 7 day cycle was planned in the beginning. Maybe longer) But at the time they might've been unsure how long the player might not have a Sword so they made his roll a passable (but less effective) replacement, in case they decided on a longer wait time That's my interpretation of the thought process behind buffing the roll anyway
I figured it was because of deku link and goron link rolls is an attack, all forms' roll had to be, with some not telling powerful enough to hurt an enemy, but the pots and grass had less defense and thus was able to be destroyed.
@@whisperinwind87 probably the case - however the roll doesnt hurt the enemies as goron. Its the spikes the powered up version has. They act as an own entity.
Can't believe I played Majora at least 20 times and never tought to just roll into the blades of grass. I just assumed you HAD to slash them like in Ocarina.
Love all the little details, I didn't know about the spin attack animation that doubles on the third spin. Well spotted. However, there's one mistake in this video: The red beam that you get with a quick spin attack. In Ocarina of Time, it is always blue. In Majora's Mask, it will be red once you rescued all the Woodfall Stray Faeries and bring them to the Great Fairy in Woodfall. It has nothing to do with the bigger magic meter.
The magic upgrade is separate than the spin attack upgrade in MM (swamp fairy upgrades spin and mountain upgrades magic in 64, opposite is true on 3ds) but other than that, banger video as always
It's not the magic upgrade in Majora's Mask that makes the quick spin a red wave. It's the Spin Attack Mastery. They were able to do that because Link has magic before he gains Spin Attack Mastery. That and the powered up quick spin is what makes it worth getting.
I always though it had to have a specific timing to work right though. Like rapidly mashing the button didn't work you had to time it with the correct rhythm like in Mario 64 to get the full benefit.
They already had the resources from OoT so they just added on to it. I think since they already had the models for characters and can create a new world with the same engine used in OoT they had plenty of time to improve on the physics of the game and add more small details in MM.
Another subtle detail is Link's ability to front-flip and side-flip in Majora's Mask when running off ledges. In Ocarina, he only performs a single, normal jump.
I love this detail, but it's the opposite of subtle, it's featured front-and-center at the very beginning of the game. Everyone who plays the game starts off chasing after Skull Kid on Epona, they get to the tree trunks and hop across them, see Link's flips, and go "Wow, Link's got some slick new moves!" Dang, didn't realize there was so much you can do in the first 3 days. I always focus on the Moon's Tear and then dance warp to the final day. I should use my time more wisely.
I want to add something about the second cycle: You can get the gilded sword if you are fast enough to beat WF. -Get around 7 mask(excluding Deku mask): Goron mask GF mask M. of scents Kafei mask D. Gero's mask Bunny hood Bremen mask Kamaro's mask Blast mask And correct me if I'm wrong(because I have not tried yet) but I think is possible to get the Postman's hat, assuming you triggered the Anju and Kafei quest. -Blue potion -And of course 2 bottles and the huge bomb bag but pretty sure everyone knows that.
on 1# I always took it as the hookshot in Majora was just a different type of item and it was weaker as I think the markings on the Longshot are Hylian while the other is Ikana. Kinda like different blacksmiths.
@@FFKonoko Again, Link got strong enough to actually carrying the shield that he used on his back during OoT. And also, Link was an adult when he hooked down that blasting spider. PHYSICAL LOGIC!
In Ocarina of Time, Link can seamlessly keep running between the scene transitions. In Majora's Mask however he stops on the spot when entering a new location. I always this found quite irritating and was never sure why they removed the feature.
i dont know the context of the old video so it could have been a mod of some kind, but i recall an old OoT video showing off swapping Grog's hair on and off with like a debug menu or something. like having Link walking around him swapping it.
Not sure if anybody else mentioned this but in Majora the bow will destroy a skulltula from the front, and in Ocarina it won’t! So you have to use the hookshot in ocarina and the bow in Majora. Great video as always!
@Aya Turchio You mean from the back: in Ocarina of Time, both the hookshot and the bow destroy a skulltula from the front and from the back. In Majora's Mask, the hookshot is ineffective against a Skulltula from the front, and it destroys them only from the rear. Like Ocarina of Time, the bow destroys a skulltula from the back and from the front in Majora's Mask.
Now I wonder if those changes that aren't about characters/setting were later also implemented in OoT 3D. Like e.g. arrows affecting the water or the roll attack breaking pots.
Note about the mash B swim speed. While it is not much of a difference normally, pressing B can outpace the pull of the water holes in the Water Temple, where swimming normally has you either stuck in place or sucked into them.
"Pierce through a Skulltulla's carapace." Oh, Looygi Bros, you're so eloquent. Also, the custom cam continues to bring the pizazz in unprecedented amounts.
I didn't know rolling destroyed grass in mm! Interesting Also the grog look-alike is a completely different character as he gets lost in the lost woods in oot and becomes a monster
Most likely, but there is also an interesting theory that it's the same one and he somehow ported to Termina too when he ran away, and raised cuckoos cause he loves them like in both games.
@@Shade04rek Bad theory cause there can simply be a Termina Grog, we have duplicates of so many other characters so why would Grog be special? More likely he just turned into a Stalfos as thats what happens to most people who get lost there and Grog is just Termina's version. There are plenty of other similarities seen in other characters that exist in both dimensions. The archery guys still run an archery shop each, romani still has a ranch with cows and knows eponas song, the girl who runs the treasure chest game is basically the same but in a different shop, honey and darling are still obsessed with each other, the dog lady still loves dogs but took it to another level, guru guru still plays a music box and gets made easily. You can go on and on. We dont have theories to suggest these people also fell through a portal to explain their similarities, its a reach to suggest Grog needs one too. He's dead in OOT and chilling on Romani Ranch in MM, two separate people, two alternate dimensions.
Fun fact: While Link in Majora’s Mask doesnt swim as fast as he was in Ocarina of time, Fierce Deity Link can swim as fast as Ocarina of Time Link. I think thats been used on him instead. Also, you dont have to tap to swim faster as Fierce Deity as well.
Funny enough, Grog appearance in Majora's Mask is just using OoT's unused Beta appearance. The hairstyle exist in the OoT model it just goes unused and there is even another unused one with a lot longer hair as well.
Another subtle difference is that majoras mask has a nearly constant visual reminder of impending death and an aura of doom and despair, while ocarina of time reveals it over time and the existential dread of one link timeline not being able to reclaim its youth and dying an ignoble death just to teach a dog how to sword is more gradual.
I swear to god, Grog had a mohawk in ocarina of time too! I remembered that he had a mohawk and after he gave you the saw quest item he lost his mohawk! I always thought the saw was his mohawk!
For the rolling to destroy grass and jars, I wonder if it has to do with the shield. The Deku shield is being worn in the OOT clips and the Hyrule shield is worn in MM, maybe the metal Hyrule shield "cuts" the grass and pots? Not sure if OP tested both shields
Gonna be honest, I never even realized MM Link sounds different from OoT. It's subtle, but he sounds more like someone on a journey than a kid on an adventure
Very nice video ! I have just a suggestion for you : it will be cool if you make more suspense in your subjects, for example for the clumps of grass in your vid you said first that in Majora the clumps of grass is breakable with the roll so it was easy to guess that in Ocarina it's not the case. But if you take first the Ocarina's example and you say for example : "Roll have no effect in clumps grass", here we can't really guess what gonna be the effect of the roll in clumps grass in Majora's Mask, so there are more suspense. Very nice video again. 👍
A very interesting topic! I never realized most of these because I always assumed that since the two games use the same assets does so would be everything else. Like, automatically would be the same. 😅
I would think that a lot of this is an effect of the expansion pack and its effect on the graphics and animations, its pretty remarkable if you ask me.
Another difference, you can shield while swimming by keeping Z and R in OOT, while in MM this option was removed, this annoys me as you can't defend against octorok and skullfish while swimming
I wonder how many of these are deliberate changes and how many are just changes made for Majora that had downstream effects on code that already existed.
deku link's spin probably uses the same code as link's rolling (with altered parameters) so they just made all rolling, regardless of form, cut grass. just to keep things simple.
Another change not so know but also not so important is that Z targeting places the camera closer to Link in OOT than MM. And I'm not sure about this but to me it looks like the camera is a lot stiffer when Z targeting in MM too.
Honestly I think I prefer all of these changes for the Majora version. MAYBE not the swimming one though, I kinda do like the idea of being able to swim faster, but that seems like a lot of work for negligible gain.

-Link ain't pretending he is a good swimmer anymore, nobody believed it in the first place
You can actually complete a heart container as Deku Link during the 1st 3 day cycle. You can obtain these 4 heart pieces in Clock Town as Deku Link within this cycle.
The 1st one can be obtained on the Clock Tower deck after trading the Moon’s Tear.
The 2nd one can be obtained by winning the postman’s game on nights 1 and 2.
The 3rd one can be obtained by trading the title deed at the inn after midnight.
The 4th one can be obtained by winning the Deku Playground game 3 times each day.
Dang, didn't realize there was so much you can do in the first 3 days. I always focus on the Moon's Tear and then dance warp to the final day. I should use my time more wisely.
I want to add something about the second cycle:
You can get the gilded sword if you are fast enough to beat WF.
-Get around 7 mask(excluding Deku mask):
Goron mask
GF mask
M. of scents
Kafei mask
D. Gero's mask
Bunny hood
Bremen mask
Kamaro's mask
Blast mask
And correct me if I'm wrong(because I have not tried yet) but I think is possible to get the Postman's hat, assuming you triggered the Anju and Kafei quest.
-Blue potion
-And of course 2 bottles and the huge bomb bag but pretty sure everyone knows that.
This channel needs to blow up i thought id seen it all.... Looygi Bros says different...
on 1# I always took it as the hookshot in Majora was just a different type of item and it was weaker as I think the markings on the Longshot are Hylian while the other is Ikana.
Kinda like different blacksmiths.
That, or I thought that Link got stronger between those events.
@@Fredcat11 um, except that he doesn't physically punch the hook forward, it's spring loaded?
@@FFKonoko Again, Link got strong enough to actually carrying the shield that he used on his back during OoT. And also, Link was an adult when he hooked down that blasting spider.
PHYSICAL LOGIC!
**looks at thumbnail**
Ah yes, Grog has a mohawk in MM and not one in OoT. Very subtle...
XD
In Ocarina of Time, Link can seamlessly keep running between the scene transitions. In Majora's Mask however he stops on the spot when entering a new location. I always this found quite irritating and was never sure why they removed the feature.
This is a cool episode. I especially like how much Nintendo upgraded interactions with water for Majora's Mask.
Love this! Mostly I enjoy the character differences. Some great camera work in this video. Awesome work
Great video as always! Keep ‘em up! We love it! Thank you!!!
These are some cool facts! And the prodcution quality with the camera is great too!
I just binged all the Zelda videos and then this comes out. *Chef's kiss*
i dont know the context of the old video so it could have been a mod of some kind, but i recall an old OoT video showing off swapping Grog's hair on and off with like a debug menu or something. like having Link walking around him swapping it.
I started with Majora as a kid, had a hard time at first getting into Ocarina afterward. It was purely out of annoyance that the camera would recenter
Not sure if anybody else mentioned this but in Majora the bow will destroy a skulltula from the front, and in Ocarina it won’t! So you have to use the hookshot in ocarina and the bow in Majora.
Great video as always!
@Aya Turchio
You mean from the back:
in Ocarina of Time, both the hookshot and the bow destroy a skulltula from the front and from the back.
In Majora's Mask, the hookshot is ineffective against a Skulltula from the front, and it destroys them only from the rear.
Like Ocarina of Time, the bow destroys a skulltula from the back and from the front in Majora's Mask.
Oh I see, don’t think I ever tried the bow in ocarina!
Those custom camera angles are *chef's kiss* incredible!
The most important thing is that I NEVER get tired of OoT and MM Videos!!!! Best 2 games ever made.
I loves these videos and i am play Majora mask right now so it cool to see the small details
I never get tired of watching videos of my favorite games from my childhood.
"Pierce through a Skulltulla's carapace."
Oh, Looygi Bros, you're so eloquent. Also, the custom cam continues to bring the pizazz in unprecedented amounts.
Being able to roll and destroy grass and jars makes it so much more effective than having to stop, pick it up, and then throw it.
I didn't know rolling destroyed grass in mm!
Interesting
Also the grog look-alike is a completely different character as he gets lost in the lost woods in oot and becomes a monster
If you ask me the n64 graphics brought Zelda to life. I love the classics but the world came alive once it went 3d on oot and mm imo.
Another banger video! I never would have any of these noticed these.
Again great video!
greats from Germany (OoT Speedrunner!)
6:57 After #10 it goes to #4.
Love ur Videos ♥
I wish they would bring back the hyper fast sword swing B button mash from Minish Cap. Unrealistic, sure, but very satisfying.
This why we need a Zelda game that is more about the history of Termina, instead of Hyrule.
Imagine if this vid came out 20 years ago, people would be flabbergasted at the cinematography
How do you find these things? 😍
Free time
Great video always
Majora’s Mask is a really good romhack of OoT 👍
Also, the bombs explosions in Majora are way more visual realistic, with even some debris flying off the explosion afterwards
I also love the use of the debug camera, but the framerate choppiness throughout was a let down.
You'd think I'd have remembered that Grog didn't have a mohawk in Ocarina.
It's a hairstyle that just... suits him. I dunno what it is.
For the rolling to destroy grass and jars, I wonder if it has to do with the shield. The Deku shield is being worn in the OOT clips and the Hyrule shield is worn in MM, maybe the metal Hyrule shield "cuts" the grass and pots? Not sure if OP tested both shields
Well, in OOT you need a strength upgrade to uproot grass, so a roll breaking it would make the upgrade meaningless in that regard
you can destroy grass and jars by rolling without a shield. i'm pretty sure they added the mechanic in because you can get your sword stolen in majora
From memory doesn’t Grog have a red Mohawk when you see him in the most woods as adult link? Perhaps I’m imagining it.
The Gras/jar destruction with a roll was needed as link can loose his sword. There had to be a way to buy back the sword without reseting time
Gonna be honest, I never even realized MM Link sounds different from OoT.
Great camera work
I enjoyed this video. Thank you
1:45 wait WHAT? How have I never done that? especially since you have that period at the start where.. you'd think...
3:24
I have never seen this animation in my life
Actually did you know gorg’s mohawk is indeed present in his oot model but the mesh is disabled
I'm not 100% but I believe in ocarina if you roll with the iron boots on it can break grass and pots.
How the freak can they fit in so many little details in within such a small time period it’s crazy
A very interesting topic!
I never realized most of these because I always assumed that since the two games use the same assets does so would be everything else. Like, automatically would be the same. 😅
I feel like the b mashing for fast swimming was just the remnants of a scrapped idea they forgot to completely remove.
I wonder if Link's rolling destroying plants and pots in Majora's Mask was part of the programming for Goronn Link's roll ability?
Ocarina had the better story while majora's mask had the better gameplay
Nice camera work in-game!
I knew most of those, but watched it just because duh, them (those) games are so nostalgic.
I could be wrong, but it looks like Grog's hair is the same texture as his pants lol
I would think that a lot of this is an effect of the expansion pack and its effect on the graphics and animations, its pretty remarkable if you ask me.
I would love a release of _Ocarina_ that just includes the subtle improvements of _Majora’s Mask…_ the non-pointy models for the bottles, for one 😂
Another difference, you can shield while swimming by keeping Z and R in OOT, while in MM this option was removed, this annoys me as you can't defend against octorok and skullfish while swimming
Your camera skills are impressive
I wonder how many of these are deliberate changes and how many are just changes made for Majora that had downstream effects on code that already existed.
deku link's spin probably uses the same code as link's rolling (with altered parameters) so they just made all rolling, regardless of form, cut grass. just to keep things simple.
This is... oddly fascinating!
In the majora mask 3d remake, you can climb ladder faster by spamming b
ever since he got the freecam gameshark thing he sure loves using it
Another change not so know but also not so important is that Z targeting places the camera closer to Link in OOT than MM.
