    When you’re dealing with a no-start complaint on a gas engine, you only have three things to check. Is it getting fuel? Is it getting spark? Can the engine compress the air/fuel mix?
    But on a diesel, it’s another story! Watch this edition of The Trainer to learn more!

    The first test could be just listen to the cranking. If your battery starts getting weaker after a few times, you have compression

    When I worked at L.A. D.W.P. we had only a few light duty diesels, both the 7.3L V8 and the 6.0L V8.
    The 7.3's ran great in the vans only had one 6.0 that would not start after it was shut off. Relative compression and 48 volt FICM no problem, but the I.C.P. at cranking was supposed to be a minimum of 500 PSI like you said.
    The low pressure fuel system was delivering fuel to the HP pump with no problems, I don't remember the reading now. The truck I had was at 250 to 275 PSI for the High Pressure.
    I was working on it in L.A., but after one day (and a total learning curve) they took it on a roll back to Mojave.
    I had read a lot about 6.0's, and some of their diagnostics.
    I wanted to check the Injector Control Pressure Sensor and Control valve as I had read how if they get contamination in them, that will cause a no start. Sadly, the truck was taken before I could do that.
    Thanks for the info Pete.

    How come no one does MAF testing on (like 4 gen Ram) diesels? Just found your videos and they are very informative. I can't wait to do some testing. Gotta find out why ecm pin 80 to my MAF only has 11.4 V, While ecm is getting battery voltage (12.4). Videos very inspiring.

    Hey, I have a 07 6.0 that will crank and fire but won’t start. When it fires it dumps out black smoke and kinda smells like something’s burning. I have a few things I plan on checking like the ficm and air filter but was hoping for your opinion. Thanks

    • @MotorAgeMagazine
      @MotorAgeMagazine  2 года назад

      Black smoke is an indication of excess fuel. White smoke is unburned fuel. How fast is your engine cranking? Too slow will not allow the air charge to heat up sufficiently to ignite the fuel. What is the battery voltage? Too low will slow cranking speed and can impact FICM voltage to the injectors. There are many factors to look at on the 6.0 - do you have access to a scan tool with Ford capability?

    • @nathanhill1525
      @nathanhill1525 2 года назад

      @@MotorAgeMagazine i know it’s cranking fast enough cause it’s firing and there should have been enough battery voltage. I just scanned it and everything looks good. It’s really confusing cause everything that it needs to start is working.

      @@chhindz Odds are that if it is the head or gasket, retorquing will not correct or help. Does this use a standalone cooling system or does it continuously pump sea water through the cooling system jackets? I don't know much about marine diesels.

    • @chhindz
      @chhindz 2 года назад

      Taking the place of the radiator it has heat exchanger where tubes of non mixing sea water and coolant dissipate heat sea water never entering block. I had an old 420 jaguar which was gushing water from head after a freeze, I tightened head and it ran ok for years after. I don't think it will work either, but no harm in trying except a lost gallon of oil
