    Always adjust the gap to the larger setting per the specs and the easiest way to be pretty accurate when you're doing this is to use the "go/no-go" method. For example, if the FSM tells you the gap needs to be between 0.011" and 0.013" then you want to make sure the 0.013" feeler gauge passes through but the 0.014" feeler gauge will not. I've been doing it this way for over 20 years( and I have 285,000 trouble-free miles on my '98 CRV) and it really takes the guesswork out of the procedure. I used to adjust/check the valve clearance every 30K miles but I've bumped it back to 40K the last couple of times since the valves were still well within specs when I checked them. None of mine were even close to being too tight at 40K but I made sure to adjust them back to the largest setting if need be.

    Good video and explanation of why the valve clearance decreases over time as opposed to most cars that increase over time. On a high mileage B20, you may run out of adjustment on one of the rockers. If left alone, it will surely burn a valve. The fix i created was to disassemble the rocker and grind about 1mm of material off the body under the ball. That yields +1mm of additional adjustment. See my video on this.

    When I checked the valves on a CRV, the one exhaust valve was over-tightened.
    It had been at the local Honda stealership in the past 6-months for an unrelated distributor issue. It was fixed after a couple visits, and due to the need for multiple visits, they threw in a complimentary valve adjustment.
    I was like sweet, thanks for that! It drove alright for awhile but then started to exhibit misfires. I parked it for awhile then eventually checked the valves. The one exhaust valve was way over tightened.
    This leads me to believe that the service technician could've accidentally or even purposefully over-tightened that one valve, which led to a likely burnt valve and literally no compression in that cylinder.
    Now I'm trying to go through Honda Headquarters to see if they can resolve this issue as it seems to be not only a TSB, but also the fact that they performed that incorrect valve adjustment not too long ago.
    If nothing can be resolved through them, I'll have to either pull the head and change the one valve and seals (hopefully) or change out the head for used/rebuilt one. Such BS. lol

    • @roninmotors7466
      @roninmotors7466  7 лет назад

      That is pretty rough :( sorry to hear that. Definitely look at costs to complete the job properly and compare to swapping in a fresh JDM engine. I usually don't do head gaskets anymore, or repair heads. We just swap in fresh JDM swaps and end up with a better end product with similar cost overall. Check it out (depending on your mileage anyways)

    • @unlimitedpotential8073
      @unlimitedpotential8073 7 лет назад +1

      All good :) just a bump in the road lol
      I'm not sure if I will do that as we don't intend on keeping the CRV...just really trying to get it to run reasonably well enough to sell. It's a great engine, all the other cylinders hold great compression, it's just that one! :(
      So, given that we want to sell it, we're either thinking of selling it as-is and taking a hit on the value of the car, or repairing it myself to the best of my ability, hope it holds compression after whatever I try, then hopefully sell it for close to its actual value.
      If we were to keep it, I'd think about the JDM swap, but hopefully someone likes these things enough to do something like that if it were to come to that. It's got 220,000 kms on it, so not too bad. Just needs a bit of TLC :) lol
      Thanks for the info and input!

    awesome video, thank you. just did my 99 crv. intake valves pretty good all around. on the exhaust side, i had 4 that were slightly loose (guesstimate .25mm), i had 1 stupid tight (had to turn the screw 2 full turns before i could even slide the gauge in there). that was cylinder 4...2 others were a bit tight, but probably within specs (.16..17), and the last was really loose (guesstimate .30mm or greater, cylinder 1).
    chasing a p0304 and a p1399 codes. i replaced the spark plugs with NGK PZFR6J-11, which is really the only spark plug you should use on the B20...doing that cleared the p0304 once i gapped them correctly.
    the crv only has 100K miles on it, and i've never had to adjust valves over the span of 20 +/- hondas, including a '98 civic with 360K on it.
    advance auto parts has a PL branded gauge in stock, the only thing that sucks is the smallest gauge on it is .203MM (ideal for exhaust valve adjustments, but useless for intake valves...had to borrow a gauge).

  • @notSusNugget

    5:35 off-lobes can help indicate which cylinder at TDC. Lobes pushing down means valves are pushed down, aka that cylinder is not TDC
    Set exhaust more loose side cause tendency to end up too tight.

    random misfire,cyl num 1 and 4 misfire and lean bank 1 codes.So I
    pulled the the plugs and it had oil in the wells.Started with oil
    change, new ngk plugs,replaced the valve cover gasket,and since the
    cover was off went ahead and did a valve adj. since it was a little
    loud.started it up engine was alot smoother and engine was quiet,Drove
    it for a hour or so and got the stumble back with 6 misfire codes ,
    random misfire, cyl 1,2,3 ,4 and any cyl misfire,So pulled it back in

    Only thing i noticed was that harness connecter for the dist is stuck
    and the plugs where bright white still and dry.Don't want to threw the

      Shawn Roberts I wouldn’t go tighter than 0.18mm, 0.20mm works great too. If you’re new to this aim for 0.18mm, and make sure the 0.20mm won’t fit. Like a “go-no go” adjustment.

    Hi there, my old 2001 mk1 CR-V has a B20z1 engine. Now it has Honda servicing up to about 2014 by the previous owners- I can't see any documentation that the valves have ever been re-tweaked or even the timing belt changed from any of the receipts I got with the car. Just fluid changes, break pads etc. It has it's 150'000 miles on the clock but the engine sounds fine to me. But what do I know as I'm a total novice at this. So I was wondering what your advice would be- I'm probably not going to open the engine at this early stage- only had her a month! But it's a great car and I'd like to keep it around for a while. Should I take her to a Honda garage to get it checked or could a good non Honda mechanic check the valves?

    • @roninmotors7466
      @roninmotors7466  4 года назад +1

      Deaner Hockings - Reptilian Hunter taking the valve cover off to inspect the belt is pretty non invasive. You dont have to take it to the dealer but someone familiar with Hondas can adjust the valves. Maybe on your next service suggest that they adjust them and inspect the belt for wear. B20’s dont really snap belts often so I wouldnt be worried. Do adjust the valves in the next 5-10k miles though. Cheap insurance since itll only cost about $100 to do.

      Just wondering, you're referring to "off-lobe" and "on-lobe"..does that mean that Top Dead Center is "off-lobe"?
      In the service manual, it states that the cylinder should be at TDC for the valve clearance check.
      Just curious if what the deal is on this? thanks

    • @roninmotors7466
      @roninmotors7466  7 лет назад +1

      by "off lobe" I'm referring to the humps/lobes on the cams that open and close the valves. Starting with TDC, you rotate the crank and do each cylinder in the correct order. 1-3-4-2

    • @unlimitedpotential8073
      @unlimitedpotential8073 7 лет назад +1

      Thanks, I just wasn't sure what the relation was between off-lobe and TDC.
      I was like "does TDC equate to being off-lobe?" but you were checking the valves for more than one cylinder at the same time?
      As you say in your reply, start with TDC, rotate the crank, follow the order 1-3-4-2.

    How do you tell the difference between valve noice and injector noise?

    • @roninmotors7466
      @roninmotors7466  5 лет назад +1

      Great question! Grab a long screwdriver, place the metal end on the injector and put your ear on the handle. This will allow you to hear the injector. They shouldn’t be that loud.

    • @roninmotors7466
      @roninmotors7466  4 года назад

      sorry for the late reply's but your idea is on the right track. If the valve seat has recessed too much that may be your only option without removing the head. Some have had success grinding the rocker arm. Is it ideal? no. But you gotta make do sometimes. Oddly the intake valves rarely have these issues, so I would not.

      Maybe the dislikes are because you shouldn't have to do this. I've never really heard of cars having to have a valve adjustment let alone every 30k miles. Ridiculous, especially out of a Honda. My girlfriends 2017 is at dealer for this exact thing. They have been trying everything, even replaced all fuel injectors,, now gonna do valve adjustment at 65K miles. Good thing it's under warranty! Ridiculous! Also having to change the crap diff fluid every 30k and Trans fluid every 30k CVT trans is ridiculous too. Too much maintenance, I wouldn't have expected this much maintenance on a Honda.

Be sure to have both arrows facing straight up otherwise if even a timing cam is off by one tooth on the belt it will still not pass smog, I recommend getting the bluedriver obd2 scanner to check if it will pass smog. It comes with a presmog software that will show you if one of the O2 sensors is rich or not (it shows all of the O2 data). Another note is to replace the sensors, it was awhile ago so I dont remember which one exactly but they should be cheap.
