    I recently got a $120 order on Discogs from someone from China who paid for standard international shipping and was a new buyer. Because I didn't 100% trust the guy I paid a few bucks extra myself and shipped it tracked. Turned out my gut feeling was right and after he received it he tried to file a chargeback through paypal and said he never got the records, so I just whiped out the tracking code, won the dispute and never heard from the guy again. Moral of the story if you're not really sure about a buyer id advice to ship it tracked especially on higher value items

    good tips - I also try and leave positive feedback for sellers who do send me exactly what I was looking for. So often we are quick to criticize the "bad" and not comment on a good transaction. If more people remember to post about the good sellers, it helps not only them but other potential buyers.

    Another must is always send to the address stated on the buyers PayPal. I’ve lost £400 on a Technics turntable when I sent the item to a different address at the buyers request. He then promptly said he never received the item and of course I had no case with PayPal because I unknowingly didn’t stay with in PayPal’s term of service, lost out big time so please always ship too there address listed on the PayPal you receive the money from. 👍

    If it's a REALLY, REALLY, REALLY expensive album that you sold, I HIGHLY recommend you get a signature confirmation with your delivery. Unfortunately I sold a "holy grail" through eBay, shipped it with a tracking number BUT didn't get a signature confirmation of delivery....HUGE MISTAKE! I seen the package was delivered to the correct address, however buyer says the postmail left it on the porch and he never received it. I lost not only a "holy grail" album, but I lost my money too!

    • @bubba99009
      @bubba99009 4 года назад +1

      Yea USPS won't pay insurance on this when it happens either - even though the mailman might have even delivered it to the wrong address. Or didn't deliver it at all. There's really no point in getting the insurance without also getting signature confirmation.

    I always ask for pictures on Discogs...especially if it is a high dollar item. I also send this message to the Discogs Seller when purchasing: "I'm buying this LP out of good faith that it is in "_______" condition as you have listed, with no cutouts, holes, saw notches, ring wear, edge/corner wear, stains, stickers attached to sleeve (other than "Hype"), pen markings, warps, scratches, or any other defects to the vinyl or outer sleeves. The Seller will usually respond and cuts out me receiving a misgraded record.

    I know it may not be as easy to get exactly what you want when you want it, but I really, really like to stick with a small group of sellers that I have a lot of experience with. Will even buy from them if they are bit more expensive. May require I wait longer to get something, but it can be worth it sometimes.

    • @mercurialmagictrees
      @mercurialmagictrees 4 года назад

      Yeah that's a good idea . You can ask them to find what you're looking for and they may do a discount on higher priced stuff because they want to keep a loyal customer.

  • @AndyP126
    @AndyP126 4 года назад +12

    Not an scam per-se, but an annoyance. When ever I get a misgraded record, the seller has always been willing to take it back, as long as I PAY the return shipping. I recently bought a NM record for $8.00 that arrived and looked like it was G+ at best, but more likely G. Lots of surface noise and probably a half dozen or more scratches. The selles offered to refund my money, if I sent the record back at my charge. And they would only refund the purchase price, and not the shipping cost to get it to me. In the end it ended up being close to a wash in price and not worth the effort to send it back.
    Check the sellers return terms. Make sure they refund shipping on a damaged record.

      Had some guy sell me a record with what he claimed to be a vg+ sleeve, but the record had a huge seem-split on the top. He asked me to leave a review so I gave him a neutral one because he was nice other than that and the record played fine. But when I mentioned that misgrading as something I would’ve liked to know before I purchased from him, he told me to return it. Not willing to go through the hassle, especially cuz the record played fine and I didn’t want to deal with oversea shipping. I respectfully declined and he started freaking out on me and gave me a real shitty buyer review:/

      Many online stores that sell records - I mean big reputable sellers with official stores, not even sellers on Discogs, won't refund the shipping price. It's absolutely horrible. Being from Canada and having to order many of the records I want from the US or even the UK, it really sucks receiving a poor copy and having to just settle for keeping it due to not wanting to spend all the extra money to ship it back.

    This was an essential video. I've been buying records on ebay and discogs weekly for over a year and it's been great so far. I do worry about the day that something will make me mad. As a potential seller in the future I do worry about scams or finicky collectors that can't be satisfied.

      I also fear buying from new sellers with no reviews. It's does cause some concern even if they are new and they are authentic. I suppose just using the PayPal method on the website transaction service will be the way protect the investment.

  • @eyewandersfoto
    @eyewandersfoto 4 года назад

    Good tips. Another one... Along with using PayPal for online buying *always* use a credit-card (not debit or checking account) as the funding source. In the rare instances that something happens where PayPal does NOT help out adequately, you'll have another level of protection via chargeback and/or transaction dispute via your creditor. You can fall back on them to either handle a reimbursement or to lean on PayPal on your behalf.

    Great advice. If anyone ever asks you to send payment as friends/family to avoid fees, those “fees” amount to a little more than $3 for a $100 purchase. Throw em an extra $3 and send the payment as goods and services anyway, that’ll usually shut em up.

    I never bother buying from any seller with a lower than 99.6% positive rate / ratio of 1000 on discogs or ebay. Sellers in the 100s or fewer sales I want to see 100%. It might mean I miss out on something special but I have never been disappointed with any purchases since I started to adhere to the above criteria. I learned my lesson the hard way. Like the dude said, ALWAYS check the feedback!

    Good tips, Matt! Let me share my experience.
    I always buy records using my debit card. Yes, I’m aware of the possible dangers doing that (like someone stealing your card number), but I have never had a problem. This is mainly because of two things: 1. My bank is very diligent to question suspicious charges. More than once I’ve had to call them to confirm that the purchase they denied was legitimate. After that, they put it through and that’s the end of the problem. 2. I am also not afraid to call the bank if I see something suspicious on my account. If I can’t track it down, I report it to them. I realize that it may be after they’ve already been paid, but by doing this, the bank is aware that these people are scammers and therefore won’t allow any more charges from them. In this case, I often have to get a new debit card because the bank wants to close out that card to prevent any more abuses. I realize that this can be a bit of a pain, especially when you have your debit card number already with your most common merchants. But this happens rarely, so it’s really not a big deal.
    As for USPS: I used to work for them. I can assure you that if a package is marked fragile, they won’t throw it across the room (and if they do, shame on them). But that’s not regular procedure in handling the mail. I remember there was a company in the town I lived in that regularly mailed cookies (yes, cookies) on a regular basis. We treated those packages with kid gloves, almost literally. I never saw a cookie package ever get mangled, much less broken.
    You’re smart in insuring your packages that are worth $100 or more. May I suggest that if you would ever have record(s) worth several hundreds of dollars, that you might consider sending them registered mail. Registered mail is handled entirely separately from all the rest of the mail, and that includes insured mail. It’s an extra layer of protection for valuable items that are mailed.

    I tried to sell my turntable on Craigslist. They warn you about the money order scam when you post something. Sure enough, a couple of days after I listed it, I got an email that seemed legit- guy was asking about the price and if I would negotiate. I emailed back and then he asked for my address to send a money order. I said I’d prefer cash or PayPal and obviously never heard back. Another giveaway was the really fishy email address he was using.

    I agree with you to read reviews. Especialy the ones of Paypal. Use google to search on Paypal reviews and you know, NOT to use paypal. Paypal charges always. Even if Buyer cancels the order. Paypal is slow on response and hard to convince that the buyer tries to scam you. I stopped it. Openend a bankaccount for discogs and sell only with direct payment to this account. Cheaper, saver and my positive reviews gives the buyer a disoned insight of my reputaion.

    I have had multiple LPs ruined in the mail via USPS media mail. Most recently it was an original pressing of Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking. It came cracked right down the middle. Thankfully I asked the seller to insure the record as I paid $70 for it. This was through Reverb LP (R.I.P.) and the seller got me a refund. I insure anything over $50.

    One of my recent purchases on Discogs, the seller asked that I send money via Friends & Family as he claimed it would help him save money. I told him either cancel the order, or use Discog’s marketplace for the transaction, in which I would be using PayPal for payment. I turned around and reported him to Discogs and his account was suspended for a short time. The seller did agree to my terms and sent the record, but it was delayed quite a bit by his account suspension.

    Almost as big for me as scams when buying online is the packaging sellers use. I usually take a picture of the packaging before opening it when it looks damaged. I don't understand why a seller wouldn't want to package vinyl as securely as possible. The comment you made about the USPS tossing packages around is alarming. I have noticed my mailperson will sometimes just toss my vinyl towards my front door and on one occasion, the guy had a stack of vinyl packages and after scanning them, he let the entire stack drop onto my porch.

  • @Kaliflower__

    Really great tips! I am honestly usually wary of buying records online- I much prefer in person.
    There was one occasion where I found an original pressing of an album I had wanted for a while, and original pressings of said album are relatively hard to come by and usually upwards of $100. But this was $40. I ordered it impulsively and it arrived just as described, in VG-VG+ condition, and it was a legitimate first press.
    In retrospect, I was quite lucky, and I wouldn't test my luck like that again. I did find something a little odd, though. Inside the bubble wrap when I first opened the package was a paper card, and on it written the album, followed by VG, and $350. To this day, I wonder whether the seller had acquired ţhe album through questionable means.

    Now I got scammed by a buyer on eBay who claimed the record was worn and scratchy (it wasn't) and all he offered as proof was a phone video of playing the record with audio coming through the phone mic (in other words he offered nothing) -- and yet eBay gave him a refund on the basis of *that*. It was a cheap transaction but still, I wonder if it's necessary to actually record a sound file of the record (properly) if it's something valuable as protective evidence.
    As a sound engineer I can't believe some clown took a video with his phone and wasn't laughed out of court. Actually I can't believe people use their phones as a camera at all.

    I have had two quite inexpensive items lost in the mail (there's a possibility they never sent them) but waited too long to open an appeal with ebay as I held onto a hope the item would arrive. In one instance I fought it, and lost. In the other I only paid like £5 and couldn't be bothered to go through the whole process of appealing and arguing a case with ebay. Nowadays I would, but I guess sometimes you just gotta cut your losses when it's an insignificant amount to fight over.

    I signed up for DISCOGS months ago and I loved the site.. UNTIL they changed something a month or so ago and I got bombarded by basically demands for accepting cookies when I logged in. I say demand because when I decline (And I have to go through multiple clicks to decline each batch of cookies, no pun intended) I get the same demand over and over again requiring I go through the same time consuming decline of each set of cookies. I clicked on a small link in the extended page of that cookie acceptance demand and there is a list of all the cookies "third party venders" will be putting on your computer. The list is MASSIVE! More than 100 so called vender cookies will be placed into your system if you accept. Now DISCOGS declares your privacy protection in THEIR site but these third party cookies... Are they restricted to gathering data ONLY from your use of the DISCOGS site? Are they gathering your data ALL the time? DISCOGS would not answer. I am currently trying to gather info on the over 100 cookies that DISCOGS wants to put on our computers and identify the companies behind the cookies. I will no longer use DISCOGS as they won't publish the list of the third party cookies and define what data these cookies gather and when and what protections we as users have from these third parties. We pay for anti-virus and anti-spying software and here is a company wanting you to allow actual spying on you by over 100 third parties. Sorry no thanks. My bet is on the cookie request window if DISCOGS stated "we will be putting more than 100 "third party" cookies on your system" most people would say "NO." So DISCOGS does not spell that out. Napster was once a pretty cool site when it started then it quickly became the internet whore where you picked up viruses and spyware left and right. DISCOGS is not following a policy or government regulation when giving third parties access to their customers online information. They are selling that access to their customer's online information. DISCOGS has not denied that to me the multiple times I have contacted them.

    Not so much scammers, but in my experience there are too many dishonest sellers on Discogs who it appears consistently and deliberately overgrade records. When challenged on the grading after receipt, they readily offer a discount or a return if you don’t agree to a discount. I reckon that it’s an intentional business model... they inflate the value of their sale stock on the basis that maybe 2 out of ten orders will result in a discount (in which case they’ve lost nothing versus the true value) or a refund (when they take a small hit as they generally have to pay the return shipping). They bank on the other 8 out of 10 buyers not complaining and they keep their buyer ratings high by being reasonable with buyers who dispute the grading.
    I almost exclusively order NM/NM records when buying from Discogs and I’d say that around 30-40% are overgraded in some way. I’m not pedantic in my grading - I’m talking about really obvious defects that are clearly not permitted according to Discogs grading guidelines (the Goldmine Standard) like seam splits, tears, scratches, surface noise audible over the music, etc.
    I’ve actually had better success buying on eBay. Photos make a big difference. That said, there are some excellent sellers on Discogs and I’ve had some top condition records, great packaging and service. I always leave great reviews for those types of sellers and save them as a friend so that I can look at their stock from time to time.

    do you buy records using discogs checkout or do you usually pay outside? Sometimes there are sellers with items i really want but almost everytime when i ask if they accept goods and services they never respond, before i would just ask them to give me their paypal so i can send via friends and family directly and they would always respond and i got my package, is there a reason why sellers dont want to accept goods and services? Even if everytime i tell them i can pay for the fee?

      They are avoiding charges. Like the man said for your own safety you should use the goods and services option.

    I will forever avoid KerryCarter on e-bay. Still waiting for product or refund. Free shipping from England is an excuse for making you wait too long to file a claim.

    I read somewhere that you shouldn't buy anything that comes from Russian Federation. I've seen a lot of records being sold from there on both ebay and Discogs.

    If there’s a seller I don’t trust and wouldn’t recommend is PopMarket on Discogs. Happened to a couple friends and even myself, they sold records that are out of stock, when we all tried working it out, no response. Fuck PopMarket.

    Never pay using PayPal funds. Use ur bank. If PayPal doesn't have ur back the bank will.

    Me and my friend were in high school selling a cd to some guy on Discogs for $100, and since we didn’t know what we were doing it took us a while to get it shipped. We fumbled with the tracking number cuz we didn’t really know what we were doing and accidentally gave him the wrong one at first. On top of that the shipping was delayed. Long story short, the guy filed a complaint on PayPal, after we had shipped the cd. PayPal sided with him for no reason other than that he was the customer, gave him his money back and he kept the cd.

    I’ve had great success buying and selling online on a variety of platforms, using PayPal friends and family. It’s just common sense on the buyers part. I’m surprised an entire video was dedicated to this. Seems unnecessarily alarmist.

      That's great that you've had no issues, but the fact that there's no protection from PayPal should something go wrong, I'd never in good conscience recommend using it with someone you aren't totally trusting of.
